CHAPTER FIFTY SIX
“Edgar.” I called and sprang up from my seat. I was stunned, my jaw dropped watching how breathless and how he’s struggling to get away from my guards.
I clenched my fist. Anger surged into me. For Christ sake, he has no rights to be here! Even though he might have come to look out for me since I haven’t been able to reach out to him for a long time now, he should know when to draw the line. There’s no way that he wasn’t able to see the news, he knows I’m meeting Lucia and Bernadette this evening, so why is he barging into my house as if it belongs to him. Even fighting with my guards!!!
What’s he trying to achieve? I cast my eyes at Cardo and he was already breathing fire. A total change in the twist of my own plot!!!!
I could see the wheels turning in my mind as I tried to process the information. Why was Edgar here? And why was he fighting with my guards? I could feel the anger and frustration building up inside me, but I tried to remain calm. I needed to figure out what was going on before I made any decisions.
My eyes flicked back to Cardo, and I could see the tension in his body. He was ready to act, but I knew that violence wasn’t the answer. I had to defuse the situation before it got out of hand. “Cardo,” I said, my voice firm. ”
“Did you invite him here to torment me or what? I told you that I don’t like him being your friend neither do I want to see him around you.” His voice was harsh and his eyes as mean as anything.
I cast my eyes briefly at Bernadette since I caught her smirking at me. Her smirk has grown into a full grown smile.
Bîtch! She must be loving the turn of events in this show. Not when the cameras are trying to capture Edgar’s face by every means.
I touched Cardo’s hand and it was so cold and furious. “Cardo, I didn’t invite him here.” I said in a low tone so Bernadette and Lucia won’t get a wind of what’s happening.
Obviously, Edgar want to turn out and be my weakness at this moment, something which shouldn’t be possible.
“I need you to take a deep breath and relax,” I continued, trying to keep my tone steady. “I don’t want you to be furious and angry about seeing him. I will handle this in my own way.”
Carmen way.
I could see Cardo take a deep breath, his body visibly relaxing. I knew he was trying to calm himself down, but I could see the anger still simmering underneath. I turned my attention back to Edgar, who was still struggling against the guards.
“Edgar,” I said, keeping my voice as even as possible. “I need you to stop resisting and calm down. We can talk about this without all the drama.”
For a moment, Edgar looked like he was going to keep struggling. But then, he stopped and seemed to take a deep breath. His body relaxed, and he nodded his head slightly. I took this as a sign that he was willing to cooperate, and I motioned for the guards to release him. They let go of his arms, and he stepped back, rubbing his wrists.
“Carmen, are you okay?” He asked softening and putting his hands on my face which was like an uproar to everyone in the room. He had to put his hands on my face infront of Cardo. How? Why?
“Carmen, I heard what happened to you, are you okay? How can you still be nice to everyone in this room after what they did to you.” He was at the verge of tears. He was caressing my face, with trace of tears in his eyes.
Why is he bothering himself? “I’m fine.” Trying to sound as nice as possible. He’s my friend, I tried to etch that in the back of my head before I take reckless actions against him.
He won’t have been here if not that he worried about me. I don’t know what he heard about me but he’s really disturbed about it to the extent that he had to cry. I don’t know why he’s so hellbent on cursing everyone in the room but he’s not so wrong, I cursed at everyone in the first place, even Cardo for having a very problematic home to make me be in so much pain and almost lost it.
So he’s right to blame everyone but my anger is, why is he here? At this big occasion infront of Cardo, Lucia and Bernadette and even the press!! How am I going to explain the relationship between Edgar and I? How am I ever going to wriggle out of this situation?
“Carmen, did they threaten you? Did they beat you? Did they do anything bad to you?”
I could see the genuine concern in Edgar’s eyes, and I felt a wave of emotion wash over me. I had to resist the urge to throw my arms around him, to let him comfort me.
He reminded me how badly I needed someone to cry with me, especially when Cardo sent me home to my father’s house, all alone, I had to be there trying to sort myself out. Cardo helped me out a lot but then, he was more torn apart than I was. Edgar reminded me of what it felt like to have him around.
But I knew that it would just create more problems. So I stood there, trying to keep my composure. “No, they didn’t hurt me,” I said. “They can’t hurt me. I’m bigger than you think.”
Edgar’s eyebrows furrowed, and I could see the confusion on his face. “What do you mean? Carmen can you stop acting strong in your life and__”
“Okay that’s enough,” I heard Cardo’s voice before he sprang up to his feet and came towards us.
“What are you doing here?” He asked him as he stood behind me. Eyes as hot as a fiery furnace. Like he could rip Eddie apart any minute from now.
Edgar stared at Cardo, his gaze hardening. “I’m here to see my wife,” he said, his voice firm. “I don’t need your permission to do that.”
“Your wife?” I asked in gasp and surprise, hell no! What’s Edgar doing? How can he call me his wife so openly!
“Yes, you’re my wife.”
“Don’t repeat that word again.” Cardo said as he pushed me aside and stood infront of me, burning him up with his hot gaze.
“Oh, you wanted me to say friend? Well, sorry but I won’t say that. Carmen…”
“Don’t call her name so casually like that! She’s Mrs. Alejandro before I blow off your jaw! You can’t be stupid in my own house.”
“If you wanted some respect, then you should’ve earned it. You should’ve treated her better so I won’t have to come here to rescue her.”
“Oh yeah?” Cardo said, taking a step towards Edgar. “You think you can just barge in here, make a scene, and expect to walk away unscathed?”
I could feel the tension in the room ratcheting up, and I knew that things were about to get out of hand. I had to defuse the situation, before it spiraled out of control.
With Bernadette and Lucia getting entertained by the three of us, the feeling was killing me. I wanted to beat up Edgar and Cardo at same time.
Whose side will I take? Cardo’s and I will call Edgar nothing infront of the whole world. And later, I will get latched at for having an affair with a youngee since I’m almost at age range with him, or take his side and a harsher critic will face me!!!
I feel like Bernadette knew that this is going to happen. She keeps laughing and smiling almost blowing my head off. It’s almost like I started up a fire which will end up consuming me.
“Both of you, stop!” I said, my voice rising above the fray. “This isn’t helping anyone. There’s no need for a fight.” I added the last word which was so much unlike me.
I could feel both of their eyes on me, their gazes intense. I took a deep breath, trying to keep my own emotions in check. “We need to talk about this like adults,” I continued. “There’s no need for violence.” I turned to Cardo, “Cardo please.”
For a moment, neither of them said anything. Then, finally, Edgar spoke up. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low. “I shouldn’t have come here like this.”
“Oh yeah! You should’nt have barged into my house like this if you have some respect for my prestige and my family!” Cardo’s voice higher than normal.
“You mean a family that poisons one of their own? You mean a family who feels threatened by a little child and ends up poisoning her in order to scare her?”
“Can you keep quiet!!” I yelled.
“I can’t keep quiet Carmen! This man here had to use you to bring in his own ex and his sister to torment you!”
“And that not true!!” I yelled again before Cardo growled and finally struck his face with a hot slap.
The sound of the slap reverberated through the room, and I could feel the shock and horror in the air. “What the hell are you doing?!” I yelled, my voice shrill with panic. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had never seen Cardo act this way before, and I was afraid of what would happen next.
Cardo ignored me, his eyes still fixed on Edgar. Edgar was rubbing his cheek, his face contorted in anger and pain. “You have no right to hit me!” he yelled, his voice shaking with emotion.
“I have every right to slap you kid! You get that? You don’t come into my house and run your mouth as you want.” Cardo said and grabbed the collar of his shirt.
“Cardo, people are watching!! Can you stop!!!” I yelled but no one wanted to listen to me, getting all riled up the more.
“Everyone out of this room!! Now!!” I yelled and murmurs rose higher!! ” Didn’t you hear me?”
“Not until you explain what’s going on to us.” Bernadette said and stood up from her seat.
“Seems like there’s a cheating scandal cooking up in this family.” She added coming close to me making my throat burn so much in anger. “Don’t tell me that what I’ve been hearing about you and the little boy over there is true, mi cunada (my brother’s wife?)
Before I could respond, Cardo spoke up, his voice deadly calm. “That’s none of your business,” he said, his words like ice. “And you have no right to speak to my wife that way. Now leave, before I have you forcibly removed.”
Bernadette’s eyes widened, and she took a step back. “You wouldn’t dare,” she said, her voice shaking. “Not in front of all these people.”
“Try me,” Cardo said, his expression stony. “Now leave, or I will make you.” He had left Edgar, turning to face Bernadette squarely. I didn’t know Cardo can be this way towards people, and I think I’m the reason he had to go this extreme.
“Cardo.” I called feeling so sober and so messed up right now. How did my plan go to nuts like this.
“I can’t believe we got invited to this house and to get chased out like mad dogs, right?” Lucia blurted as she stood up from her seat, carrying her bag and coming towards us.
“And my little brother is even threatening to hit me up if I dare talk down on his scandalous wife.”
“Don’t you dare say that again Bernadette, everyone leave,” Bernadette hissed and stormed her way out followed closely by Lucia who was smiling sheepishly as she walked past me. He turned to the cameramen, reporters, pressmen. “Pack up your things and leave!” And his eyes caught Edgar’s, “including you, get out of my house before I have my guards lock you up and give you a nice beating of your life.”
Edgar laughed. “You can actually give me a nice beating of my life, I get it, you can do it, if your wife can be poisoned under your nose which I’m sure that you’re the one who did it. There’s nothing else which you can’t do. You can actually do anything to me and it’s actually acceptable.”
“Edgar!!” I stepped in. “What’s your problem? Why are you talking down on my husband like that as if he’s your mate.”
“Carmen open your eyes, see what I’m not seeing!!”
“You’re blind Edgar! I’m fine! I’m married and I’m in my husband’s house!! And I love Cardo and if you respect me and see me as your friend, then respect my husband like I do!”
“Carmen.”
“Get out of my house! Like right now!”
He was not ready to budge and I was so ready to push him, Cardo’s voice and the flashes of Cameras infront of him earlier wasn’t so pleasant, they’re going to write bad article about him. I’m not worried about myself at all, I’m more worried about him and the company. Anything he does is actually going to affect the stock prices of the company. What’s he going to tell his shareholders?
“Carmen.”
“Get out! You weren’t invited in the first place.”
“Carmen__”
“Don’t make me push you out.” I was ever ready to push him, anything to protect Cardo’s image, his heart, I’d do it because I’m always on his side.
“Get out!!!” I was yelling as I dragged him by his hand and started hauling him towards the door.
Tears coming up at the back of my throat, I wanted to cry but I held it back. I’ve never felt the urge to cry in all the situations in my life but now, the urge is building up. How sick!
And that’s because my plan to pin these two women to a corner have been ruined. This was the perfect moment for me, to get every truth I wanted but Edgar’s presence, words and his mannerless nature ruined it all.
“Carmen listen to me!” He said as he suddenly grabbed my shoulders, I tried shaking him off. “Look, there’s something I haven’t been able to tell you.”
“What is it? Be quick and try to get your hands off me! Respect my husband!!”
“I love you!!” He suddenly bursted out and everyone, was shaken to the roots. I wriggled out slowly feeling like the ground should open so I can jump into it.
I felt my stomach drop, and I could barely breathe. I looked up at him, my eyes wide with shock. “What did you say?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
He swallowed hard, and his eyes were filled with emotion. “I love you,” he repeated, his voice shaking. “I know it’s not the right time to say this, but I had to. I couldn’t keep it in any longer.” He said and turned, and then left the house on his own.
I stood there, frozen in place. I didn’t know what to say or what to do.
Flashes of cameras sickened me. I dug my own grave. My legs went limp immediately. I was shaking. I stepped back until I fell into Cardo who was behind me, he wrapped his hands around my waist, breathing on my neck as if he wanted to help me breathe with his.
Cardo’s touch was like a lifeline, and I clung to him as if he were the only thing keeping me from falling apart. He was warm and strong, and I could feel his heart beating against my back. I closed my eyes, and for a moment, everything else disappeared. All I could feel was him, and his arms around me. And then, reality came crashing back in.
I opened my eyes and pulled away from him, turning to face him. He looked at me, his eyes full of concern. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice soft.
“I’m not okay.” I finally confessed, tears trickling down my face. “I’ve ruined everything Cardo. I’ve marred everything.”
“You didn’t Carmen.” He said and the pressmen were beginning to pack up and leave noisily, the reporters still ready to stay back to get everything to the end. Our guards were doing a good job getting everyone out of the house.
“How are we going to wriggle out of this situation Cardo?” I began to sob.
“We’ll figure it out,” Cardo said, his voice reassuring. He took my hand in his, his touch warm and comforting. “We’ll get through this. We always do.”
I knew he was right. We had been through a lot together, and we always managed to come out stronger on the other side. But this felt different. This wasn’t just about us, it was about our families, about Cardo, about Edgar! Imagine this getting out to the world, Edgar, an unknown guy in love with Cardo’s woman, cheating scandals! How will Cardo cope with all this? The stakes were so much higher.
“What are we going to do?” I asked, my voice small. I was terrified of what the future held. For the first time, I’m very much terrified about everything going on in my life. Edgar will be lashed, maybe lynched to death by netizens. Or worse, he won’t leave a normal life anymore for getting involved with Alejandrozz family.
But then my Cardo. And then me. Oh Gawd! “Let’s go to Paris first thing tomorrow morning.” He whispered into my ears.
“That will be running away from our problems Cardo.”
“It’s not running away,” Cardo said, his voice firm. “It’s taking some time to regroup and figure out our next steps. We can’t make decisions when we’re emotional and in the heat of the moment. We need some distance and some time to think. And then we’ll come back and deal with everything, I promise.”
His words were logical, and I knew he was right. But I still felt like I was giving up, like I was running away from my problems. I knew that wasn’t true, but the guilt was eating away at me.
“I’m sorry Cardo.” I said as I clung to him, his large arms around me. “I’m sorry I had to put you through all this.”
“It’s fine baby, you matter to me and if I can protect you, I don’t mind any other thing. Okay?” He said while I nodded my head.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. Cardo’s presence was soothing, and I focused on the feeling of his hand holding mine. “Okay,” I said finally. “We’ll go to Paris. But only for a few days. And then we’ll come back and face everything head on.”
Cardo nodded. “That’s all I ask,” he said. “We’ll get through this. We’ll find a way to make things right.”
I felt a surge of relief, knowing that we were in this together.
Cardo pulled me into a tight hug, and I buried my face in his chest. I breathed in the scent of his cologne, and I felt a bit of the tension drain out of my body. “We’ll be okay,” he said, his voice low and soothing. “I promise.”
I nodded, even though I knew it wouldn’t be easy. But I trusted him, and I knew we would find a way through this mess. We had to.
I need to.
For the sake of us.
“I love you Cardo and I always will. Don’t let Edgar’s words get to you.”
He kissed my hair. “Mi esposa. No one can breathe next to you except me.”
“Mi esposo,” I said, using the Spanish term for husband. “You’re the only one for me, now and forever.”
Cardo smiled, and I felt my heart skip a beat. “I love you,” he said, his voice full of emotion. “And I will fight for you and for us. I will always stand by your side, no matter what.”
I leaned up and kissed him, savoring the feel of his lips on mine. He was my rock, my safe haven, and I knew I could weather any storm as long as I had him by my side.
My Cardo.
Mi principe azul.
