CHAPTER 58

AMY’S POV

I sat in my hotel room, staring at the walls as I replayed the events of the past few days in my head. I couldn’t believe what had happened. My whole world had been turned upside down, and the person responsible was James.

I took a deep breath and stood up, making my way over to the door. There was a brief knock. I opened the door and saw James. He walked in and closed the door.
As soon as the door closes, I turn to face James. His expression is neutral, but I can see the guilt in his eyes.

“What are you doing here, James?” I demand.

“I’m sorry, Amy,” he says, looking down at the ground. “I know I shouldn’t have come here, but I had to see you. I had to explain.”

“Explain what? Your lies? Your betrayal?” I hiss.

He winces at my words, and I feel a brief moment of satisfaction. But then the pain and betrayal come flooding back, and my anger intensifies.

“How could you do this to me, James?” I ask, my voice rising. “How could you lie to me for all those years? How could you pretend to be someone else and infiltrate my life like that?”

“I know, Amy,” he says, his voice filled with remorse. “I know I messed up. But please, let me explain.”

I cross my arms over my chest, glaring at him. “Fine. Explain.”

He takes a deep breath and starts to speak. “I’m sorry for lying to you, Amy. I was on the run from some dangerous people in England, and It was bugging me. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You didn’t mean to hurt me?” I repeat, incredulous. “Do you have any idea how much pain you’ve caused me? I trusted you, James. I confided in you. And you used me.”
“How could you do this to me, James? How could you lie to me like this? You made me believe that you didn’t want me again.”
James looked shocked and guilty, but he didn’t try to deny it.
“I’m sorry, Amy. I should have told you the truth, but I didn’t want to cause you any more trouble. I was afraid that if I told you the truth, those people might come after you too. I know I messed up, but I was just trying to protect you.”

“Protect me? How could lying to me protect me? You put me in danger by keeping me in the dark. And now, because of your lies, I don’t even know if I can trust Jayden. I can’t believe you would do something like this to me.”

“I know, Amy. I know I messed up. I should have been honest with you from the beginning. I never meant to hurt you.”

“But you did hurt me, James. You hurt me deeply. And now I don’t know what to do. I can’t marry Jayden knowing that he’s been hiding you from me. And I can’t be friends with you either. I need some time to think about all of this.”

“I understand, Amy. I’ll give you all the time you need. I just want you to know that I never meant to hurt you. I care about you more than anything.”

“I don’t want to hear it, James. You’ve said enough already.”
“I know,” he says, his eyes pleading. “And I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I just wanted to keep you safe.”

“Keep me safe?” I say, shaking my head. “You kept me in the dark, James. You made me believe that you were someone else entirely. And now, I find out that my fiancΓ© and my best friend have been lying to me this whole time.”

“No it’s not like that. Believe me when I say I didn’t know, Amy,” he says, looking up at me with a pained expression. “I had no idea Jayden was your fiancΓ©. And I didn’t know how to tell you the truth without putting you in danger.”

“That’s not good enough, James,” I say, my voice shaking. “I trusted you, and you betrayed me. I can’t even look at you right now.”

He looks at me, his eyes filled with regret. “I understand, Amy. I’ll leave you alone. But please, don’t give up on me. I love you.”

I feel a lump in my throat as he says those words. Despite everything, I still have feelings for him. But the hurt and betrayal run too deep.

“I need some time, James,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “I need time to process everything. And I need to talk to Jayden.”

“I understand,” he says, nodding his head. “Take all the time you need. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

I walked straight to my bathroom. I could not bear to see him right now.
β€œShut the door on your way out!”
And with that, he turns and leaves, closing the door behind him. I sink down onto the floor and tears streaming down my face. My heart is shattered, and I have no idea how to pick up the pieces.

JAMES POV

I had been bracing myself for this moment ever since I saw the look on Amy’s face when she saw me in Jayden’s house. Now, as I stand before her, fury and hurt etched on her face, I know I must face the consequences of my actions.

“What the hell are you doing here, James?” she demands, her voice cold and sharp.

I take a deep breath and try to calm myself before responding. “I came to England to find you, Amy. I needed to see you again, to explain myself.”

“Explain yourself?” she scoffs.
β€œI’m sorry for lying to you, Amy. I was on the run from some dangerous people in England, and It was bugging me. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” I told her.
β€œHow could you do this to me, James?” She asked, her voice rising. “How could you lie to me for all those months? How could you pretend to be someone else and infiltrate my life like that?”

I flinch at the pain in her voice. “Yes, that’s what I mean. I know I messed up, Amy. I should have told you the truth from the beginning. But I was scared, and I didn’t know what else to do.”

“You were scared?” she repeats incredulously. “Do you have any idea what you put me through? I trusted you, James. I confided in you. And you used me.”

“I know, Amy, and I’m sorry,” I say, feeling the weight of my guilt heavy on my shoulders. “But I promise you, I never meant to hurt you. I just didn’t know how to handle everything that was happening. I wanted to keep you safe, Amy.”
β€œKeep me safe?” She said, shaking my head. “You kept me in the dark, James. You made me believe that you were someone else entirely. And now, I find out that my fiancΓ© and my best friend have been lying to me this whole time.”

Amy stares at me for a long moment, and I can see the war raging inside her. Finally, she takes a step closer to me, her eyes boring into mine. “And what about Jayden?” she asks, her voice low and dangerous.

I feel a pang of guilt at the mention of Jayden’s name. I know I’ve hurt him too, but I don’t regret coming here to see Amy. β€œBelieve me when I say I didn’t know, Amy,” i say, I had no idea Jayden was your fiancΓ©. Amy. I swear to you, I never would have gotten involved with him if I had known.”

She narrows her eyes at me, her expression still hard. “And what about us, James? What were we? Just some game for you to play while you were running away?”

“No, Amy, it was never like that,” I protest, stepping closer to her. “I care about you, more than I can say. I know I messed up, but please, can’t we talk about this? Can’t we try to make things right?”

Amy shakes her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I can’t do this, James. I can’t be with someone who lies to me, who makes me question everything I thought was real.”

“I understand,” I say softly, my heart breaking at the pain in her voice. “I’ll do wh@tΓ«ver I can to make it up to you, Amy. I just want a chance to make things right.”
β€œI need time to process everything. And I need to talk to Jayden.” She said.

“I understand,” he says, nodding his head. “Take all the time you need. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

But she shakes her head again, her eyes hardening. “I’m sorry, James. I can’t do this. I can’t be with someone who doesn’t respect me enough to tell me the truth.”
β€œTake all the time you need.” I said.
And with that, she turns and walks away into the bathroom of her hotel room leaving me standing there, feeling more alone than ever. I know I messed up, and I know there’s nothing I can do to change what’s happened.
β€œShut the door on your way out!” She yelled and I sighed defeated…..
