Chapter Twenty three (semi final)
( Three months later)
The water splashing in the sea woke Hillary up. Richard’s arm was draped around her and she snuggled close to smell him before sitting up.
Instead of leaving the bed and going to the kitchen to prepare breakfast like always. She found herself starring at her husband.
Its been three months. Three months since she has found out the the truth about his cancer. Three months since they’ve been together, living at the Villa and loving each other as each day comes. The baby is doing fine and though Richard still works. He spends most of his time with her. He has been nothing but a caring husband and the more he showed how caring he was, the more she loved him.
Everything would have been perfect if it wasn’t for his cancer. Knowing the fact that he will soon die hurts her a lot and though she had pleaded with him to get the therapy. He had refused saying he wouldn’t spend the rest of his days in the hospital. That he would preferred it if he stayed with her and their child.
She hadn’t wanted to give in but in the end she did because she only want his happiness but thinking about it now. She needs to be selfish.
She couldn’t sit back and watch the love of her life die. She had to do something and that has got to be now. Taking his phone. She walked out of the room to dial a certain number.
Hillary walked into the restaurant. Searching for a familiar face and when she finally spotted her. Hillary went to the table , giving her a hearty greeting.
“I didn’t think that this day will ever come”Stella Watson said as she stared at Hillary.
“Me either. I never thought that I would have to call you. Even after being married to your grandson. You still haven’t acknowledge me. I didnt care about that and I still don’t care. Richard’s acknowledgment is the only thing I need and it’s only for him that I arrange this meeting”Hillary returned.
“Then start talking”She said .
“Richard has cancer and he doesn’t have much time left”Hillary began.
“Have tried to persuade him to see a doctor and get treatment but he wouldn’t budge. I need you to help me in convincing him”Hillary added
“Cancer? Since when?”She asked looking very worried.
“Four months ago. He was diagnosed with it and that is why he went for artificial insemination which resulted in me getting pregnant” Hillary finished and judging from Stella reaction. She could tell that she was worried.
With shaking hands Stella picked up her glass to drink the water.
“So you want me to talk to him?”Stella asked
“Talking won’t do. He is just as stubborn as you. Am hoping you can bully him into it. You are my last hope”Hillary begged .
“I don’t think he will listen. He h@tës me and I…..”
“And you care for him. You always have even though you never let it show. I know it must have been hard when you lost your husband and son but Richard is also your family. Now more than ever you two have to be together”Hillary said interrupting Stella.
“Have been a bad grandmother. A heartless one. Trying to hide my feelings. I try to push people away. I blamed my husband for being weak and also blamed his father too. I was too hard on Richard. Ever since he was born. I was never there for him. I took his affection for granted and now….now he is also going to leave me like everyone” she said looking sad. Hillary took her hand in hers.
“He won’t leave. Richard won’t die and that depends on us. We have got to help him. Time is running out”Hillary said to the older woman.
“You are right. Knowing Richard he wouldn’t listen to me too. So what I have to do is to prepare everything. The doctor, the nurse, the ambulance. All you just have to do is get him prepared. I will bring the ambulance in personally tomorrow. “Stella offered.
“Thanks Stella”Hillary said only to be rewarded with a smile in return.

“Am almost home. There were a lot of people at the boutique. I had to wait a line before it got to my turn”Hillary lied as she talked to Richard on the phone.
“I will be home soon”She insisted as she got out of the taxi. Walking the few distance to their villa.
Just so she could get to talk to Stella in person. She had made up a lie about visiting a boutique to get baby clothes and as soon as she had finished with Stella. She had gone to a baby store to get some clothes and had hailed a taxi only to get into a traffic jam. It had taken almost an hour before they left the jam. Which had resulted in her getting home late.
“Are you sure you are home?”Richard asked through the reciever.
“I am. You will see me soon”she stated.
“Wait!”He said and she stopped
“Why?”Hillary asked as she stood still.
“Don’t go to the villa. Head to the beach instead”he said
“Why?”
“Just come”he said and switch off the phone.
Feeling Inquisitive, she went to the beach only to see it lit with lights and decorated up with flowers giving it a romantic vibe.
“What’s this?”she asked smiling.
“A surprise”he replied as he pulled back the chair for her to sink in
“Its so beautiful”she gazed around her.
“Do you like it?”He asked
“Like? I love it”she replied happily.
“I knew you would. This is a thank you gift from me”he said as he poured her wine.
“A thank you gift for what?”she asked as she toast with him
“For being there for me. For having my child. For being my wife and most of all for loving me. Thank you Hillary”He said softly making her feel it was his last words to her.
“Stop saying thank you. Your getting me scared”she said softly as she set the wine down.
“Am not going to die. You don’t have to be scared”he returned as he stood up walking towards her.
“Am just being grateful. I know how you have been there for me and I just want you to relax and enjoy yourself. You deserve it my love”he said as he stood behind her chair putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Stop worrying for a while and let me pamper you. You have been doing the pampering. Its my turn now” he said, gently squeezing her shoulder.
She smiled gently and put a reassuring hand on his only for it to be very hot.
“You are Hot Richard”She said as she stood up to stare at him.
“Really? I didn’t notice”he returned and quickly she moved towards him. Touching his forehead only for it to be hot too.
“Your burning Richard. Let’s go in and…..”
“Let’s finish our dinner first”he returned smoothly.
“But Rich……”
“I prepared this with all my love. I didn’t even notice that I was burning. I prepared it all having you in mind. So don’t let my effort be put to waste and have told you that I can’t die. Its just the side effect of the cancer. I will be fine”he said giving her a smile.
They had their dinner and enjoyed each other company. As soon as they got to the villa. She took care of him. Praying and hoping that things will turn out well until she dozed off.
Hillary woke up the next day only to find the bed empty.
Richard was no where to be found,quickly she went down stairs to look for him only to find him lying on the floor, unconscious.
