Chapter Thirteen
Fannie stood in front of the church with Dora and their necessary friends who were going to take place in doing something at the wedding.
They had decided to come to church to have the wedding rehearsal before the wedding takes place.
“Why is he taking long?”Dora asked as she stared at her watch.
They were waiting for John and Chris to show up. Afterall the wedding reharsal won’t be complete without the groom to be and the best man.
“They will be here soon” Fannie replied and just then a car stopped in front of the church and John got out having an apologetic look on his face.
Expecting the person in the passenger seat to be Chris. Fannie was surprised was to see Alfred coming out of the car.
What he is doing here? She thought as he walked towards them.
Ever since the dinner last night. She hasn’t set eyes on him. She was sure that she succeeded in getting him off her back but seeing him here certainly tells her that she hadn’t succeed.
“I invited him”Dora said to her and before she could say a thing. Dora went towards John to give him a kiss and also to greet Alfred.
They got to where she was and out of politeness. She said hello to him which was also returned.
“Where is Chris? I thought the two of you will be coming together”She asked John.
“Something urgent came up at work. He had to stay back to handle it. He will try to make it and if he can’t , I will just brief him over it during the bachelor night”John said before his attention was taken by Dora.
“The bachelor night is tonight. Aren’t you scared that someone will steal me from you ?”John asked Dora.
“It took me years to get you to be mine. I doubt that you will be tempted by them”Dora replied before giving him a kiss.
Seeing how happy her friends were made her sad. She stared at Alfred to see him starring at her. She had made a mistake in looking at him. She thought as she looked away while she quickly gave her attention to Dora and John.
“Stop the lovey Dovey and let’s go in”She said as she quickly walked in.
The rehearsal began and being the maid of honour. She stayed close to Dora. Doing her part.
Alfred had to take the place of Chris since he wasn’t around.
While the couple said their vow. Fannie sat in the front row with Alfred sitted beside her.
“They are lovely right?”He asked her suddenly and she turned to stare at him.
“This could have been us”He said as he held her hand which had been placed on the chair.
“What are you doing? Let go”She said but he only tightened his hold
“You cheated me Fannie. You cheated what we could have had together. You cheated my love for you”He said.
He had no idea how those words were hurting her too.
“Stop it. I belong to Chris now”She said as she pulled her hand from his.
“But you don’t love him”Alfred replied.
“How do you know that I don’t?”She asked.
“The way you looked at him last night isn’t the look you have If you are inlove”Alfred said.
“Really? How did you come to that conclusion?”She asked
“You once gazed at me with love and am not mistaken in saying that you still do”He said and she looked away quickly.
“You don’t know what you are saying”She said as she quickly stood up. Excusing herself.
She went to the rest room to wash her face . Hearing him say those things were making her feel guilty. She thought as she took a deep breath before heading out of the rest room only to see him waiting by the door.
“What are you doing here?” She asked and when he didn’t reply she began to walk past him only to be pulled to the wall.
“What are you doing? Someone might see us”She said as he stood towering over her.
“I don’t care. Have been dying to do this”He said and without waiting for a reply from her.
He kissed her and when she tried to pull away. He pulled her close. Plunging into her mouth.
Fannie found herself pulling him close while she opened up for him. While his hand roamed over her body. Acquainting himself with it. She did the same to him.
He pulled back to stare at her still maintaining the closeness they had.
“I miss you Fannie. Let’s get back together. I know you still love me”He said
“And so? What if I still feel something for you. Am now with Chris”She said
“That can easily be broken. With your consent. I will take you away from here. You, Sarah and i will begin a new life”He said and on hearing Sarah name. She was jolted back to reality.
“Sarah has a mother and she is your wife. Try starting afresh with her” Fannie suggested.
“Grace left us as soon as Sarah was born. I don’t even know her whereabout and i don’t care. All I want now is you and Sarah” he said.
“Alfred. Don’t make things worse. It’s been years and we should try to move on”She said as the tears threatened to spill.
“I dare not move on without you in my life. I love you and only you”He said as he kissed her again.
“Say yes. Say you will choose me. I will love you for the rest of my life”He said inbetween kisses.
“It’s not that easy. I don’t deserve you Alfred. I don’t deserve to be with you” She said sadly.
“Why? Were you thinking like this when you left Six years ago? Tell me Fannie. Tell me why you left like that. Make me understand”he said and she would have said it if someone knocking the door hadn’t interrupt them.
“Don’t make things worse Alfred. Just let me be”She said as she quickly move out of his arms heading out of the rest room..

A while later Alfred sat in an empty chair, sipping his vodka.
It was John bachelor night party and they had booked a club for the occasion.
While the other guys screamed and wooed over the female dancers who had come to entertain them. Alfred stayed apart from them observing the whole thing.
Though he had been tempted the whole evening. John have been a gentleman sticking to his principles and also being faithful to Dora.
He would have done the same. Just seeing John getting excited over his wedding tomorrow made him envious. He thought as he watched John drinking.
“You’ve been sitting here for a while now. Why not join the party”Chris said as he sat beside Alfred looking tipsy. Seems like he has been drinking.
“I would rather stay here and keep a cool head”Alfred replied.
“You look drunk. You shouldn’t drink anymore” Alfred added.
“You know what? You are just like Fannie. She also told me the same thing but what can I do. This is John bachelor party and I can’t refuse those who offer me drink”Chris replied drunkenly.
“Really?”Alfred returned.
“Have got to go and take care of John or he might do something he will regret for the rest of his life”Chris said as he stood up to leave but Alfred pulled him back suddenly having an idea.
“Why don’t you stay and keep me company. John can take care of himself” Alfred said as he poured vodka into an empty glass for Chris.
Chris took the glass and drank the whole lot before setting it back on the table.
“What should we talk about? ” Chris asked looking tipsy.
“Something that is very important. It has to do with what happen a few years ago” Alfred replied having a mischievous look on his face.

Fannie stopped the car right in front of the Van estate.
She sighed as she stared at the three drunkard who were now sleeping peacefully in the back seat.
She had been at Dora bachelorette party when she got a call from the bar owner where John bachelor party was taking place.
She had arrived there to see John, Chris and Alfred dead drunk. With the help of the waiter. She got them into the car and had brought them home.
If John Is a liquor guy. Chris have always been one to stay away from it. Alfred too hadn’t been one to drink until he was dead drunk. What had made them this way? She thought as she got some of the male workers to help take them to their room.
She stood in Chris room starring at him. She was making the wrong decision because she knew that she didn’t love him but she had given him her word and she have to bear with it. She thought as she put the covers over him before leaving the room.
She was heading downstairs when she walked past Alfred room. Her mind told her to keep on going but her heart made her stop.
She found herself walking towards the door and opening the room. He layed on the bed without pulling off his shoes.
She went to him and pulled it off. Opening two to three buttons of his shirt to help him have a peaceful sleep.
She stood still starring at his sleeping face. Wishing that things had been good back then.
“Am sorry Alfred. I don’t want to hurt you but I have no choice “She murmured as she gave him a kiss on the forehead.
She turned to leave only to be held back. She turned to see him starring at her.
“Have you been awake for long?”She asked as she tried to pull away but he pulled her making her fall on the bed.
He turned her over while he towered over her.
“What are you doing Alfred?”She asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you decide to push me away after finding that out six years ago?”He asked looking sober as ever.
“What are you talking about?”Fannie asked knowing what would come next.
“You were sick Fannie. You had cancer and because of it your womb had to be removed making you barren. I know all of it now. There is no use trying to hide it”He said confirming her fears.
