“Yes, I’m a wood chopper but I’m not crushing on my teacher and planning to have another session of m@$tvrb@tion in the rest room today.” Crucifix blows hot in his first day at school!

His words rang like a bell, sending all the students in the classroom and Mr Henry to their oblivion. Not a single sound from a chair made its way to the air. All eyes were fixed on him; even Rose the initiator of the mockery suddenly went dumb. Whoa, looking at their faces, Crucifix didn’t need to read their minds anymore because only one thing was going through there: like how the hell… Where the hell did those words come from?? ? Yes, they could only guess where it came from; Lucy, a female student who made the last mockery and was replied by Crucifix. Therefore, the suspenseful gaze at Crucifix in the classroom gradually deviated to the poor girl. But everybody was still trying to get the bearing, the statistics, the possibility of how true Crucifix’ statement was. At the same time, different questions ran through their minds: was Lucy really crushing on Mr Henry and planning to m@$tvrb@te in the rest room? Did she tell Crucifix about it? Like how did a new and worthless student called Crucifix know her dirty plans? No, the statement was too real to be false and was too critical to be analyzed thereby causing more confusion and messing with the students’ brains.

However, Lucy had frozen like a pile of chicken in a deep freezer. She was a young ebony girl who weaved her hair with shinny ear-ings sparkling on her ears. She wore a short flexible skirt that exposed part of her thighs. On her feet were a pair of clean canvases. She became embarrassed by the eyes her classmates were looking at her. She had not recovered from the shock, wondering about the remarkable accuracy of Crucifix’ statement about her thought which he publicly narrated. But she never told him. How did he know?!! d@mn! she wished the ground opens and swallows her.

“Crucifix!” Mr. Henry’s voice became the next thing the air carried. “What was that? What… Where.. Like have you met Lucy before? Where did such abhorrent and objectionable statement come from?”

Yes, Crucifix, where did it come from? Tell them, tell them that you’re a mind reader and have your butt kicked out from the school. If the principal doesn’t do it, your grandfather will never hesitate to, then you bid farewell to Education once again. Nevertheless, he looked up at the teacher and said, “It came from… from… from…” he swallowed hard. Was he trying to say the truth? Oh, no! Don’t do it Crucifix!

Meanwhile, the students grew impatient, they were so curious that they wished they could force the remaining words out of his mouth. Already, Lucy’s soul was about living her body.

“It’s from where?” the teacher was still inquisitive.

“It’s from nowhere, sir” Crucifix replied and directed his eyes to the students especially Lucy. “No matter how accusing and abhorrent my words might have been, it meant nothing. I was only trying to get you all attention with it. Wait, did you all actually take it seriously?” He chuckled. “Gush, i barely even know her. Also wanted to use that to make her feel what I felt when she was making mockery of me. Nobody deserves humiliation and embarrassment.”

Bravo! He nailed it! he had given them a reason to rest on the back-rest of their chairs. They actually bought the fabricated lie. But to Lucy, Crucifix was d@mn right about her.

“So, I’m Crucifix Odinaka from Olunpia High School. I left there months ago after we relocated to town Umm.. I love drawing and… and I chop woods for a living.” he smiled while everybody giggled except Lucy.

“You may now take your seat, Cross.” Mr. Henry ordered.

Walking to one of the seats, the young boy felt like a celebrity to see them still giggling at his last words, even Margret of all people kept grinning from ear to ear. That gave him some hope. Immediately he sat down beside the homosëxual, Lucy angrily left the classroom even after the teacher wanted to restrain her. That caused a stare and made Crucifix to feel bad. Only then did he realize that going into people’s minds with his ability was like preying into their privacy just like using the window instead of the door. You know what I’m talking about.?

It was noon, a break period in Kenny High. Crucifix was yet to discover how popular he had become within some hours in the school. He walked through a long passage to see students hanging around with their best of friends and lovers. Some were at their lockers while some hurried up and down a staircase with books in their hands. Many were looking at him and giggling offensively.

“He’s the wood chopper.” They rumoured mockingly, making the young boy feel lesser than anyone in the school. They tweeted him on the internet. That was how everyone got to know his laughable features.

Nevertheless, he paid deaf ear to them, adopting his grandfather’s advice about ignoring people’s opinions.. The fact is that Crucifix really wanted to make things better for himself and live a normal life but he always found himself sabotaging it, causing more harm than good to himself as if it was a curse.

“Hey, are you the new student?” A female voice from behind stopped Crucifix. Wow, who wanted to talk to a common and local Crucifix? The boy wondered and was excited to know, so he turned to see an average woman. Oh, it wasn’t a student. Sad. It was Mrs. Arida, a black and plumpy short teacher.

“Yes, ma’am. I’m Crucifix…”

Mrs Arida interrupted him by looking away to a boy at a locker. “Emmanuel, come show… uhmm… Crucifix around the school.” she called the boy and began walking again. “Have a nice day, Cross.” she concluded.
