Ivy looked at Charles in shock, everything he said doesn’t make sense, but he seem serious about it. She has never believed in ghosts existence, she doesn’t even believe in afterlife, so there was no way she could believe the nonsense he was spouting.
“What nonsense…” she shuddered, her words faded away before they could even escape her mouth.
Charles laughed later, and she batted her lashes, doubting if he was the same person who said those unbelievable words.
“You see? I told you the truth. I knew your sister, I told you from the start that I knew her but we weren’t close. I told you I could dream, even if you don’t believe in fantasy, at least everything believes in dream. I told you the truth from the get-go, but you kept making me feel like a weirdo, and I posed to be one, but you can’t take it either,”
“What…” she grumbled, and found herself laughing.
“How could you make up such stories?”
“I read books a lot. So… we can say I was just trying to… no ideal excuse,”
“Absolutely none! Because that wasn’t funny at all “
“Do you believe in ghost existence?”
“I don’t,” she blurted, and he gasped.
“Obviously,”
“And you?”
“Who believes in ghost? Those are all fantasy,”
“Well… I apologize for doubting you,”
“Anyone would,”
“I had no justification. I thought I was smart, I thought I calculated the odds, but I was wrong,”
“That doesn’t mean you aren’t smart. You are going through a tough time alone, and all you could do is worry about those around you,”
“But… how exactly do you know my sister? It’s not like I’m doubting you, I’m just curious,”
“It’s a long time ago,”
“When?”
“Ermmm…. I think it was a party, I party a lot,”
“But my sister never attended private parties, and you don’t seems like the type to attend an official party. Haven group is beyond our league, so I was just wondering…”
Charles became nervous, and looked at Violet who has been quiet the whole time. He gave her a pleading look to give him a clue, and she chuckled winking at him.
“I think it was about two years ago… I wasn’t really sure, I only remember my encounter with beautiful ladies,” he said, and the sisters laughed.
“That’s news,”
“News? I doubt,”
“That’s news to me. Everyone adored my sister for her beauty and intelligence,”
“What? They think she is beautiful? Don’t give me that,”
“You can’t even remember your first encounter with her, so how can you clearly remember her looks? My sister is a damsel, she had a lot of suitors, that makes me wonder why she picked him…”
“You must be close with your sister,”
“Not at all. There is a huge age gap between us. Everyone around me was smart and older, I was just the little girl in the family,”
“You are also smart,”
“I’m not. All I can do is play the piano, that’s the only thing that kept me company while I was alone, but I can’t even do that anymore,”
“Same. There are certain things I can’t do anymore. I feel like I can’t live because that’s the only way I could,”
“You’re wrong. Even though you can’t do the things you enjoy, you should try something else. You have to live with no regrets,”
“What do you plan to do now?”
“Return to school,”
“Did you drop out?”
“Of music school, yeah. So I am applying to college. I should take up business management and see what I can do “
“You want to fight your brother-in-law,”
“Ex. He is my ex-brother-in-law. But I can’t fight him. My sister truly transferred everything to him, even Mr. Marson couldn’t fight it, and Mr. Josh is aware of it,”
“So why do you want to study business management?”
“Because I want to do all I can. I want to fight, even if it’s a losing fight, I want to try all I can to the very end. I know I am not as smart as my sister, but I came out too in my class is certain subjects. I am quite intelligent “
“And you will continue living in that house?”
“In as much as they didn’t throw me out. My parents worked so hard for everything we have. My father said he planned the construction of that house when they plan to have another child, and that was me. They waited till the house was completed before they gave birth to me, because our former house was cozy. It’s not comfortable to raise a large family. It wasn’t as cozy, but my parents wanted us to be comfortable,” she muttered, sniffing in tears and Charles gently patted her back.
“I’m sorry, Ivy. This is all my fault. You are suffering now because of me. I should have listened to our parents, I shouldn’t have married him. Now, you are the one suffering the consequences,” Violet wept.
“I’m sure your sister regrets it too. Marrying him, and watching you suffer,” Charles said, and Ivy shook her head.
“There is no regrets for the d£ad, there is only judgement,”
“Oh… judgement,”
“Oh, yeah. You haven’t explained why you blocked me,”
“Oh, that?”
“I just texted you to properly thank you, but you blocked me without checking the message. That’s really unfair,”
“I guess I— yeah, I blocked you because I believed that will make me stop dreaming about your sister. It’s really exhausting, you know,”
“I could have imagined. But that doesn’t warrant such rudeness,”
“I’m sorry, I’ll unblock it right away. What’s your handle?”
“If you are sorry, treat me to a meal. I haven’t ate anything since I left the hospital,”
“Sure. My treat,”
“Of course, it’s your treat!” she said, and he laughed.
“Don’t think of getting too close, else, I’ll knock your head against the wall,” Violet threatened, and Charles rolled his eyes.
They ate together, engaged in random conversations about music, and he offered her a ride home when they were done.
“Thanks a lot for the ride,”
“Anytime,”
“You were right when you said the internet wasn’t honest about your biography,”
“Yeah. Have you confirmed it? Dylan is my stepbrother, his parents got divorced, and his real father is in Spain. Nobody believes me whenever I tell them, the internet just go about how I’m the youngest son,”
“But he is your father’s son in as much as its legally stated,”
“Gosh, I thought you said I was right. So, what’s all these?” he rolled his eyes. “You are just like your sister,” he grumbled.
“The internet never said you were a caring person, they just go about your dating list and all…”
“Oh, that?”
“Yeah. You are a really nice person,”
“That’s news,”
“No one ever tell you that?”
“I was never nice to anyone,”
“But you are being nice to me,”
“Yeah, that’s a bit weird. Why am I being nice to you?”
“Am I supposed to have the answer?”
“What I said earlier… about the three—…” he was saying, but Violet covered his mouth.
“Hun? About what?” Ivy asked.
He struggled discreetly to free himself from her, and smiled.
“Nothing. I mean, what I said about you being more beautiful than your sister, and you are also smart. I’ll leave now,” with that, he drove off exchanging curses with Violet as he left.
**
Ivy went to her room and laid flat on her bed. She went to her computer later and ran a search on Charles.
“Gosh… how many people has he dated? He is really the player they call him. But why am I searching this right now? He is just a dreamer that dreamt about my sister,” she grumbled, and started searching on anything related to dreams about him.
“Oh, that must be his private life,” she thought, and wanted to put the laptop away when she received a mail from the school she intended to go.
“What? Scholarship? But I was unable to apply for it. Why did they suddenly grant me one?” she thought, and responded to the mail to confirm its accuracy.
**
**
Charles put his phone away and glared at Violet.
“Hey! Mr. Feng just confirmed that your sister has acquired the scholarship, fully funded under my name anonymously. Do you still think I am after your sister?! She is not even my type!”
“So, why do you keep on going on the three-meeting of fate?” she grumbled, and he rolled his eyes.
“That never meant I was interested in her. Have you checked about me online? I don’t date innocent girls, they are too boring!”
“Then… why are you so interested in her?”
“Should I have ignored her instead? Well, this will be the last time I’ll help your sister, if you are this insecure, go and help her yourself. I already cleared my part with her. She will never try to commit suicide again, and she is going to do all she can to fight the losing game. We are done now. Can you disappear away completely? I promise never to contact your sister again,”
“What about—…”
“I never promise to help you if that’s what you what to ask, and I am not interested in that mistress stuff either… so, can you really disappear this time? I will find a way to get back in touch with my friends, I also want to live the best way I can… with no regrets,”
“If that’s what you want, then I’ll leave. Thank you for everything, Charles Hewlett,” with those parting words, she disappeared.
“Gosh, she didn’t even wait for my response. I was really not interested in her sister, and neither am I— interested in her,” he grumbled, and went to his bar to drink.

WEEKS PASSED ***
*
In the couple of weeks that passed, Violet kept her promise to Charles and never appeared to him, and Charles kept his promise too. He ignored Ivy and all means of communication with her. He returned to his friends and lied about being hospitalized after drowning in the sea, turning the story all around since it doesn’t make sense, and Tina is preoccupied, preparing for her competition. They all believed him and sympathized with him.
His live returned to what he believed was normal, but that void was never filled. He didn’t know what was missing in his life, but he felt like something important was missing. He ignored it, filling the void with alcohol, and worrying about the next girl to sleep with. He felt like everything was back to normal, and couldn’t ask for more.
**
Charles left the house to hangout with his friends as usual, they were in the club they reserved and he was busy having fun with his new girlfriend when one of his friends distracted him.
“I’m so envious of you, Charles. If you were the only child like me, you will receive a lot of nagging everyday,”
“Aren’t we here to celebrate your resignation? Why are you pouting?” another boy said.
“I told you he is just a stepbrother!” Charles lashed.
“But thanks to him, you are enjoying your best life. Your father already have a companion, what if he becomes the chairman one day?”
“That’s never going to happen. He will remain where he belongs,”
“The executive director position, is that where he belongs? The internet is blowing up on how he is the heir to haven group,”
Charles pushed his girlfriend away, and collected the phone from his friend immediately.
“Aren’t you even aware of his inauguration?”
“This can’t be,” he grumbled, and ran out of the bar.
“Charles!”
“Charles,”
They shouted after him.
*
He went to his car and called Mr. Feng who picked up the call almost immediately.
📞*Executive what? What heir?!*
📲*Sir, please relax. I was also not aware of this. But… it’s just normal for—…*
📞*What’s normal?! Dad barely has any shares in that company! His shares are all mine so how could he transfer it to that legal shit?!* with that, he dropped the call.
*
He went to a bar to drink alone, thinking about his mother and everything that has happened so far, thinking of it all, Violet was right. His mother might have no regret, but he has been the one harboring the regret for her all these years.
Mr. Feng went to pick him up later when he was completely drunk, and helped him to his room.
He laid flat on his bed, and was surprised to see Violet in his room.
“You— you’re back…”
“Are you ok? I saw the news. It was on the billboard and everyone is talking about it. Are you ok?
“No. I’m not,”
“What do you plan to do?”
“I want to live with no regrets, even if it’s a losing fight. I want to fight it till the end, because it’s not just fair,”
“You’re going to change your mind once you are sober,”
“Let’s do it. That mistress stuff. Let’s do it. Help me get it all back, the company, my right, and everything,”
“Do you think you can outcompete your brother?”
“He is not my brother!”
“I know. He is just a legal shit, but everyone proclaimed him the heir. Which means you are the real shit,”
“Please, help me live with no regret. I promise never to ask you to leave again, be my mistress for real,” he said, and she scoffed.
She turned her back against him chuckling softly when she heard footsteps close to her, and when she turned around, he was already standing very close to her with only few inches gap between them.
“Why—why’re you so close?”
“Be my mistress,” he muttered, and passed out on her shoulder.
