CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
CARMEN’S POV
“Hey hold her!!”
“She’s going to kill my wife!! Hold her! Ricardo, come and hold your wife! She’s going to kill my wife for me! Guards, release him, so he can attend to his wife. He’s going to kill my wife! Ricardo, are you still coming? Please, do something!!! Do something Ricardo!”
I heard Cardo’s uncle screaming before I felt Cardo’s arms around my waist, he was pulling me away.
“No, let me go!! I am not done with her!!”
“It’s okay. Let’s go home now. You have over slapped her. Okay? She have learnt her lessons, let’s go home now.”
“Can you let me go for now?” I said softly but Cardo didn’t let me go, he threw me over his shoulders.
“I won’t take this honey!! I’m gonna sue her!” The stupid woman was still talking.
“You ain’t doing any Sh|t old hag!!” I barked.
“Do you see that honey? You’re letting her get away! You are not gonna hold her, you not gonna retaliate for me?”
Retaliate??
Why is that word sounding so funny in my ears?
“Babe, calm down. Sit down.”
“I won’t sit down. I want to teach that little wench a lesson.”
Little wench? She calls me a little wench?
“Cardo, can you put me down? It looks like she is still got mouth to talk.”
“Shhh…” Cardo hushed as he led me out the room.
“Fuçk this house!! Who do they think they’re? If you’re the CEO of Alejandrozz, so? What’s their problem with it? Okay? You guys wanna take him down and be the CEO, right? Tsk! I think I’d rather be dead than see all of you take that away from him.”
“Carmen, you’re shouting.”
“Leave me, I need to shout!” I yelled into his ears while he kept moving, we nearly bumped into one of his aunts and I gave her a finger.
“Fuçk you! All of you! Hypocrites!! It takes hearts like my Cardo to sit at the top! Because all of you have bad hearts!! Stop hating on him!! He’s not your toy, that he can’t speak doesn’t mean he has no right to speak or fight for himself!! I’m gonna walk right through that door and the heck, I h@të side talks or back biting, speak your mind now!! I don’t wanna hear my name after I leave this house.”
“And why the heck are you making noise, little wifey.” I heard Victoria’s voice and I coerced Cardo into putting me down to my feet.
“Wow! I know you will come for me.”
Victoria’s arms crossed against her chest. “Are you having fun?”
“Does it look like I am?”
She scoffed at me. “You like as you’re creating more enmity for my brother.”
I clapped my hands laughing, all eyes on me. Evil eyes from everyone but I don’t care. They can’t beat me and they can never stop me from marrying Cardo and I don’t give a Fuçk about them, I will only do that if Cardo is involved.
“Enmity?” That word left me feeling unbalanced. “So you’re saying that there’s enmity in the first place. Why?”
“Ricardo, please take your nonchalant and blockheaded thing out of this place.” She motioned to Cardo.
“Cardo is not your dog.” I replied.
She half laughed. She frowned the next minute. “What do you feel like sometimes? That you were born and raised without a mother shouldn’t give you the right to misbehave at all times. Someday, you might put yourself in trouble.”
“Victoria, don’t speak to my wife like that.” Cardo stood behind me, held my shoulders and caressed gently.
I smiled. My Cardo is growing up. I love this.
“I shouldn’t speak to your wife like how? Cardo, do you know how big your problem is getting?”
“And so what? I’m done trying to please everyone. I’m done trying to make everyone love me. I’m done trying to be what everyone wants me to be. This time, I want to be myself. I don’t care what anyone thinks. I don’t care if you guys h@të me or not. I will always be fine. I can be fine without you all.”
“Let me tell you Ricardo, your only drive is father and that company! Or maybe this little witch standing infront of you but let me warn you, don’t think you can have it all forever without family.”
“Family? Did I ever have anyone on my side from the onset? I’m always the most foolish one. The most stupid one. Because I acted like I don’t have ambition doesn’t mean that I don’t know how to have one. I just wanted to accommodate everybody who’s in my life but I guess, the more I tried, the more foolish I become before you all. I’m done trying to be what I can’t be. So thanks but I will be fine.”
“Ricardo, come back to your senses! Go in there and apologize to everyone! On behalf of your stupid wife, apologize to uncle.”
I slapped her mouth. “Close your mouth and stop spewing rubbish.” I slapped her repeatedly shutting up every sentence which she wanted to say until Cardo stopped me.
She rushed at me but Cardo didn’t let her. “Let her be.”
“I should let her be? She slapped me, she slapped my mouth! She had no rights to do that.” She said trying to touch me but Cardo never allowed her.
“See what you’ve done? See how everyone is looking at you and your wife? ” We all looked around. Everyone’s eyes burning into us as if we were a sin. A terrible one at that. “See how they h@të you? You’re done for bro, and I think soon, father will have no choice but to take you down from that seat.”
“I will rather be dead than watch that happen.” I replied.
“And it might happen or you think it can’t happen?” She replied trying to instill fear in me with her eyes but I’m far from being moved by that.
“I’m stronger than you think Victoria. No one can take me down except myself. Or you wanna kill me? Come clean, I will love to have some fun butchering you to pieces.”
“What?”
” I’m like a wolf, you don’t touch me or what belongs to me. Else, I will tear you to shreds.” My eyes roamed around the room, at the faces which contorted, staring at me with disgust.
“And to all of you!! Let today serve as a warning to everyone. I don’t care neither do I give a Fuçk about anyone’s life. But you see Cardo, stay away from him. I do bite.” I showed off my teeth. “h@të on him as you want but don’t you dare touch him! I get so aggressive when that happens.”
RICARDO’S POV
I forced back tears as I watched her standing infront of everyone and telling everyone off.
DON’T TOUCH MY CARDO…that line got me to the core.
Absolutely no one knows how it feels like to be protected. She’s small, she’s tiny, she’s little, she’s like a baby and yet, when she stands, it feels like a thousand soldiers is standing.
Just what did I do in my past life to inherit this sort of blessing as a wife?
Mi esposa.
I don’t think I can ever stop loving her. I don’t think I can ever stop blessing the day I first met her.
To me, she’s the tiniest baby I’ve ever seen and also the mightiest soldier I’ve ever seen.
“Let’s go Cardo.” She said and then led me away. I followed her sheepishly, my heart beating so wildly because of her.
“They ruined my night. They always do. Why is it that your family has a knack for making me angry. Can’t I have one peaceful family gathering with them? Must they make me angry? Is it really that necessary.” She rattled on and on until we got into the car and drove to her house.
“Sit down.” She said as we got into her medical room. So large and looked much like a hospital room.
I guess this is where she was nursed from childhood, I heard from her father that he raised her by himself. Being so sickly, he was so tired of taking her to the hospital all the time, so he set up a hospital room for her by himself. That’s where he took care of her till she grew up. Though she had dozens of nannies which barely lasted a week before quitting.
She was a troublesome type right from childhood and being raised by a nanny was quite difficult. A child who fires her nanny by herself.
“What happened to your nanny sweetheart.” Her father had asked her some day as they sat, waiting for their dinner to be served by the maids.
“I fired her.”
“Again? Why did you do that this time?”
“You know, she was busy snooping around. I don’t like it. I saw her enter your room and the heck, I fired her.” She squealed already munching on her food.
“That’s your fifteenth nanny this year.”
“So? Not like I didn’t warn you to stop employing them, I’m fine without those gold diggers. They all wanna rip you off.”
“You’re just six. I can’t leave you alone without one.”
“I’m fine. I’m a big girl.” With a big emphasis on the word BIG and she’s actually a big girl.
At eighteen and she can take care of herself more than I have ever done.
“Aren’t you gonna sit down?” She asked jolting me back to my senses. I didn’t sit, I hugged her. I inhaled her. The sweet scent of her.
I felt for her. She must’ve gone through a lot growing up on her own.
“Cardo.” She called softly and I hugged her tighter. “Are you okay? You’re squeezing me up with your big muscles.” She said trying to push me away but I can’t be pushed away just like that.
“Let me hold you like this for a while.”
And she let me, for the past ten minutes, I held her. With closed eyes, I tried to remember all that transpired earlier. How she stood up for me. How she fought off everyone because of me.
Can I be able to protect her like she protects me?
“Cardo.” She called softly again and I disengaged from her. “Sit.” She said and I did sit.
She dropped the first aid kit on the floor and opened it. “Now, let’s dress your wound.” She said and I watched her check out medical stuffs inside the kit. Like she’s so familiar with every thing inside of it.
“Now, here,” she applied ointment to the wound below my jaw and I winced in pain. “Take it like a man and stop wincing. It’s not even that painful.” She said as she applied it more roughly.
“Hey, can you take it easy? It hurts.”
“You better shut your mouth or I’m gonna make you taste this cotton wool.” She pointed the wet cotton wool to my mouth. “I swear to God, it’s not funny at all.”
I gulped. I guess the old Carmen is back. “Still, you need to apply it gently.”
“You should be so lucky I’m treating you like this and that’s because you acted so brave today, next time, I’m going apply gin to your wound.”
“Gin??” My eyes widened in surprise.
She nodded, still busy, this time, she was touching the wound on my neck area. “yes, or you think I can’t do that?” She stopped and looked up to my face.
“I mean, why will you fight so carelessly? Why would you let them punch you like that? Are you that weak? With all these muscles.” She kissed her teeth repeatedly giving me a disappointing look.
“But you were praising me earlier?”
She rolled her eyes. “Were you expecting me to spell it out to you that you__” she stopped. “Either way, it’s good that you fought today.”
She got back to what she was doing. She was silent and I watched her. I always enjoy watching her cute face. Especially now that she’s so busy with the clean up and stuff. She barely looked at my face or my eyes. I guess she’s avoiding to do that.
“Carmen.” I called.
“Mmm.” She replied without stopping. She was applying plasters to my wound. I held her arm, making her stop and look at me. “What?”
“You seem to be good at this.”
She snorted. And shove my hand away. “That’s because I got beaten up a lot in school.”
“You got beaten up?” That was hilarious to my ears. I mean, Carmen can be beaten up by someone? I can’t even imagine that.
“Yes. My kindergarten days, they all tried to bully me because I don’t have a mom. I beat some sense into them while they beat some sense into me.” She said smiling and I knew that smile wasn’t real. She was faking it.
I made her stop what she was doing again as I peered into her eyes. You see what I’m saying? I don’t know her that much, even as I try to curry at her father’s side, trying to make him tell me all about her, there are these parts of her which I haven’t touched yet.
“Carmen?”
“That’s all in the past now.”
I made her sit up. I made her sit on top of my laps. I wrapped my hands around her waist and never let go.
“Do you think it’s all in the past?”
“Yeah it is.”
“I don’t think so from the look in your eyes. You seem shaken up about it.”
She dropped the smile. She blinked repeatedly and let out this side of her which I haven’t seen before. “I… I always struggled to belong when I was a kid. They say I’m so different. I have no mom and I’m so sickly. They didn’t wanna play with me and I was fine with it. But what I h@tëd so much was spreading rumours about me. I had to fight a lot. Got beaten up a lot. My father treated me all day, scolded me all the time but I needed to survive and get through school. Fighting and cursing became a part of me. The Bîtches in school avoided me, the good and bad ones stayed out of my way. Because I was erm…a bully, they’d call me that, when they were actually the one bullying me. They say erm…*I act the way I act because I didn’t grow up with a mother* how ridiculous. Why will they think that when__when__”her voice ceased.
I smiled at her. “You did well. I’m proud of you Carmen. I’m proud of the woman you’re becoming. Mi esposa.”
Her eyes beamed and she hugged me, “I love you Cardo. You’re the first and only friend I’m making in this life.”
“And I will forever be your friend.”

.
.
.
“Uncle, he hit me first!” Juan whined as we all sat before my father.
“I know that he hit you first and I’m still surprised that he did. Ricardo never hit anyone, even for once in his life.” My father said turning to look at me. I looked away.
“Brother, I won’t take Ricardo’s wife nonchalant attitude next time. She insulted my wife, beat my wife, why? And yet, you want to marry her into this family?”
“You have a problem with that? We are having a wedding party tonight against tomorrow, you have a problem with it?”
“Brother, she’s young and rude! She haven’t even__”
“I’m sorry that she beat up your wife but I think everyone is at fault here. I think your sons, caution them first before we speak further on this.”
“Honey, can you please be a little nice.” My mom said nervously as my father’s voice and eyes kept torturing my uncle.
“I won’t. Not when everyone have gone crazy in this house.”
“Brother!!!”
My father stood up and he was already leaving, right infront of everyone.
“Dad!!” Bernadette called standing up and fuming, she shut me an angry glare. “I’m against this marriage. I can’t have my brother marry that girl!”
“I’m not complaining.” I mumbled.
“Will you keep quiet?” Louisa cut in.
“This is why I refused to come to this gathering. I h@të seeing Cardo being shut up, even before he can speak her mind.” Quiet Carmen finally spoke up. I pleaded with her earlier to keep calm and let the conversation with my family flow very smoothly but I guess, it’s not going to go as planned.
“Shut up! You have to learn to be doing that in this family, Miss Carmen.” One of my aunt, Sapphire spoke up.
Carmen sighed out, keeping her cool.
“Father.” Bernadette called. “Please, can we stop this wedding?”
“Why? They love each other, don’t they?” Father replied, eyed Carmen and then left.
Everybody began to murmur, angry words exchanged, my cousins exchanging heated arguments and h@tëful glares at me.
“I h@të this! I h@të the way Brother use to handle things in this family.” One of my grand uncles spoke, really angry.
“And it’s more annoying how he doesn’t wanna hear anything concerning putting out this marriage.” He got a reply.
“Why will he put out my marriage? If you guys don’t like me, the least you can do is to just shut the Fuçk up and never visit my house. I swear, I won’t visit yours.” Carmen said pouting.
“And can you shut the Fuçk up, you little trap. You aren’t even married yet and you speak too much for your age!!” Sapphire came at her again.
“I won’t shut up. From this night, I’m actually gonna be part of all this Sh|t you guys talk about and do. And more precisely, I’m like a first lady among y’all, I deserve some respect.”
“Ricardo, warn your wife.” Aunt Sapphire said slowly in a growling voice and I turned to Carmen immediately.
“Let’s go.”
“No. I won’t go anywhere. They’re the ones who are supposed to leave this house. Right this minute.”
“Carmen.”
“Don’t Carmen me Cardo else I will reopen your wound.” She said getting up from her seat. She clapped her hands and the whole noise died down.
“Everyone, my wedding events start happening in the night and I think it’s so early in the morning to be making noise. So I suggest everyone should leave.”
“Carmen.”
But she won’t listen to me.
“Have you gone nuts finally?” Victoria came at her but stepped back when she saw Carmen pick up a glass of wine and smash to the floor.
Oh…Kay, hitting the glass on the floor and shattering it to pieces was highly unnecessary.
“Carmen, what are you doing?”
She ignored me. “Everyone, get up and leave.”
Oh my God.
“What rights have you to speak to us in that manner!!” My uncle yelled but she didn’t bulge.
“All of you should leave my house and go prepare for my wedding. Even me, I’m leaving this house this morning to go prepare for my own wedding.”
“How brazen! Victoria, is this what you’ve been talking about?” My cousin, Geneva asked directing her question to Victoria who nodded her head.
“Hey little kid. Don’t you have respect?” She asked and I knew it’s high time I step in.
“I’m so sorry y’all. I’m so sorry.” I apologized to everyone. “She erm…” Carmen pushed me aside.
“He’s not sorry. This is my house! My husband’s house! And I want everyone in this house to leave.”
“And if we don’t?” One of my girl cousins spoke up.
“What are you going to do? Hit me?” Fernando stepped up. “It’s as if you don’t want to go to the altar tomorrow with your complete self.”
“And you think I will let you hit her?” I replied glaring at him.
He smirked. “Wow! You think I can’t hit her infront of you? You won’t do a Sh|t about it.”
“Try that. Try hitting her first and I will make sure you lose your front teeth.”
He half laughed. “Lose my teeth? You’re so confident Ricardo and I wonder where that is coming from.”
“You wanna know where? Then touch her, just a little touch and I will show you the other side of me.”
Eye to eye, face to face. We burned into each other. I was so ready to beat him to a pulp this time. I guess the beating of last night didn’t get into his body so well.
Fire and brimstone.
Carmen smacked my @$$. “Go! Fighting!! Make sure you break his jaw this time.”
“Don’t tell me your little wife is training you to be fighting?”
“Do you have a problem with that?”
And Carmen slapped him, hid behind me while Fernando struggled to hit back. Everyone rushed towards us. Even Fernando. The shouts of how they wanted to beat her up filled the air.
I was scared for us and for her.
“Carmen, run!!” I grabbed her arm and ran out of the house with her.
They were after us.
“Why are we running?”
“Because that’s what we should right now. To run!!” I replied as we ran out of the compound, with them still after us.
“My legs are short, I can’t run like you do.”
I quickly bent infront of her and she climbed into my back, I stood up, with her on my back and raced off…
