CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
CARMEN’S POV
School is fun. I didn’t know it was, maybe because I’ve never tried to live it and now that I do, it’s so much fun.
Buht!
The class are so boring, the professors delivering boring lectures.
One had to even ask me. “Why are you here Miss. Sebastian?” She asked wearing her glasses in a funny way which made me almost laugh at her as she invited me into her office.
Why am I here? To school of course. My father didn’t get me into this school so I can laze around. It’s to learn? Right?
“I’m here because I want to learn.”
“You want to learn? Are you sure about that?”
I smiled politely, just like Cardo will want me to instead of cursing at the woman for asking me useless questions.
“What department are you in?”
Department? Yeah, come to think of it. I don’t have a department. And what’s that? Oh…Kay.
“I mean, what’s your area of study? What would you like to become or…”
“Oh…you mean ambition?” I snapped.
She nodded. “Something like that.”
I chuckled. “To be a good wife to my husband.”
She creased up her face. “A good wife? Why? You don’t think of managing your father’s company or maybe this school?”
I scoffed. “Why would I want to do that? My father can.”
“But how about finding something for yourself__”
“There’s nothing to find, not when I have it all.”
“That’s why I asked you at first, why are you in school?”
“Because I suddenly felt like going to school.”
“On what course? I mean, your discipline.”
This professor is mad. But being polite is what Cardo wants. I can’t be rude to my elders neither can I answer harshly to lecturers, stupid and tag-along Tony will tattle on me. I know he will be reporting everything to Cardo when we get home.
“Miss Sebastian, give me your hands” and I gave my hands to her, she held me. “You’re young. Bubbly, I know that. You have everything, money can’t be a problem for you, neither is it fame or power. You have it all but have you ever dreamt of something you want to do? Something you really wish you can do.”
Something I wish I can do? Something I really want to do?
Being married to a rich man, money not a problem, everything in place. Chefs and guards at my beck and call. So what more can I ask for when I already have it all. I have the best man in my life, and he’s so rich, the mighty Alejandrozz is his company to run!! So what more can I ask for?
“Dream?” I asked and she nodded.
“Yes. Miss Sebastian, I’m talking to you because some lecturers are complaining, you’ve been in this school for more than two months and yet, you’ve not gotten into any faculty or department. Are you a science student or arts?”
“Both.”
“Both?”
I nodded. “I like science and arts, at the same time.”
“Your father is sure very rich! He got you into this school when you have this kind of thinking towards school.”
“School is not my thing, I’m just trying to find an interest in it.”
“How about looking around the faculties, one by one and find something you will love doing.”
I sighed. That’s it! School stress. Now that I’ve decided to get serious with school, stress comes in. Oh. Mah. Gahd.
Is she trying to tell me that I’ve been whiling away my time since I came into this school?
Tsk!
“Yes ma’am.” I stood up and bowed.
“Do as I asked. By the end of the day, let it be that you’ve already decided on what you’ve got to do. Something beautiful and best suits you.”
I nodded and left.
As soon as I got out, I opened my mouth to start cursing but Tony was quick to silence me. “You promised no cursing.” He reminded and I growled at him.
“Follow me or bring me to any fun departments in this school. I don’t want anything that it’s not fun at all, like the Spanish language class, they’re so boring, I wonder why someone have to learn his own language.” I shook vigorously.
And I was on a tour around the department, cruising in my car actually, I don’t have time for the leg walk for a school as big as my father’s, I wonder why he had make a school this big.
And we went to the medicine department, heck! The smell of chemicals everywhere, they were too serious and nerdie! Arrrgghh!! I don’t want this. Imagine treating my enemy after a fight, I don’t want to do that. I can’t even imagine myself doing that at all.
I’d rather die than treat a criminal. But the doctors do that.
And he brought me to the pharmacy department, same thing. I don’t like it. It’s not my style at all.
And all other science department that we went to, same healthy and science language.
And the way they are gonna slave everyday to save the world or rather, earn a tiny salary all in the name of helping humanity amused me the more. Being on duty, all the time. Reading all the time, just to be like Penicillin. I h@të that guy.
And we were in the social science faculty, they were less boring but psychology, I ain’t born for that.
They all act as if they know you. What do they know?__nothing! Absolutely nothing!
Tsk. Tsk. We were in arts. Oh..Kay, so exciting and less serious compared to all the rest that I’ve been to.
Law__ I think it’s too tedious and serious. But I liked it. Imagine causing trouble and defending it all at same time? It’s gonna be fun.
“Dear Lord, it’s not my fault or that of my client, it’s this man…” I imagined myself being a lawyer already and it was actually thrilling.
Barr. Miss. Carmen Sebastian Alejandrozz, kkrrr!! So cute!!!
“It’s gonna be fun being in that department, Tony.” I reported giggling as I couldn’t control my thoughts.
“But it takes so many years just like Medicine.”
As if I knew how many years they’d study for medicine.
“Two years?” I asked and he shook his head.
“Two years?? That’s quite short. It takes four to five or six years__”
“It’s okay. I’m not interested in that anymore.”
What? Four to five years?? Why would I do that? To achieve what exactly? Why would I labour myself for who? The country? And I will sit an office or work in a company to earn how much exactly?
Hell no! That’s not me. My father has a law firm and I don’t even dream of being in there. It’s gonna suffocate me.
When will I have time to be with Cardo? When will I have time to have my babies and grand babies?? I can’t be that formal.
“It’s gonna be fine if you’re in for law.” Diego said as he stood beside me.
I turned and saw him. Scoffed and walked away from him while he followed me. Even as Tony warned him to keep his distance, he still followed me.
“Law suits someone like you. Don’t you think so?”
“Well, sorry but I’m not interested and I will be so happy if you stop following me around. Get a job for yourself with what you’re studying, cuz I think Cardo is screwing the whole family. You should be worrying about that and not what I be or what I’m not.”
“You’re always harsh. Can’t you be a little nicer with your words?”
“I have no reason to be nice to ÇOçkerels like you.”
“ÇOçkerel??”
“Yes. You shout and disturb the neighborhood even when you’re not needed in that space.”
And I walked away from him with Tony following behind , he opened the car door for me and I got in.
And he drove to the Theatre Art department.
And I didn’t stop wowing when I got down from the car. It was lit! Funnnn!!! All the theatrical and ancient things are being observed in this department. They’re serious but not very.
And I think they were having a Spanish festival, they were all dressed in a Spanish local attire and observing the gods, dancing and vibing to the whole thing. Audience were cheering for them.
“I..I like this department.”
“What?”
“Yes. I am going to get in here. I will be in this department. I love it.”
“This is theatre. You…there are so many decent department out there and you want to…”
My eyes fell on a small crowded space, something was happening in the middle of the crowd from the way the crowd were cheering and making noise.
It looks fun.
“Where are you going?”
“You will know if you stop whining and follow me.”
And he did follow me. Everywhere was looking so colorful. Is this really a department, beautiful paintings on their walls, past myths and legends were carved and put out on display, just like the stories my dad used to tell me before I go to bed when I was young.
Which means I’ve not been going to school since. I’ve been wasting my time all this while. I come to school, choose any class and get in, if it’s boring, I sleep off and if it’s not, I endure it till the end.
Class work, I run away from it, test is not for me. Just be around the crowded places where I’m gonna fill my ears with gist, fight when the needs arises, curse at anyone who wants to bully me, eat at the cafeteria and go home.
And now that I’m standing in the middle of the crowd, I felt like I belong somewhere. Maybe this is where I’m supposed to be, all this time. Like this place will understand me better more than anyone else.
And they were gambling! My favourite game!! Money was being stashed in between those men.
Money.
I love that too. At the sight of money, I’m already thinking of the latest thing to buy with it. Sorry it took time to reveal that trait about me.
And wait, who doesn’t love money? Tsk!
“I want to play.” I said and sat down.
“Miss Carmen!” Tony called and I shunned him.
“You want to play big baby?” One of the guy’s called winking at me and I was so thrilled. First time someone sees me and refer to me as a big baby instead of a kid.
“Yeah. I want to. Here.” I snapped at Tony who grumbled as he dolled out money from his sling bag.
And the crowd cheered or rather booed at me. I felt so high and mighty.
“Wow! And someone is a rich man’s daughter right?”
A rich husband, I wanted to correct but let it slide. Not like anything will change if I say that.
I’m more interested in the game than what they see me as.
“Big baby, can I know your name?” The guy inquired as he shared the cards.
“Carmen, my name is Carmen Aleja…” I kept quiet. I don’t want to spark up reactions with that surname. “Just Carmen.”
“I’m Edgar, but you can call me Eddie. Only you can call me that because you’re so pretty, look at your skin, like that of a baby.”
And we all giggled, they were five boys in total, plus me making it six and they all told me their names. And they were pros at this game.
If not for my tricks, they would be ripping me off at each round.
“She’s cheating again!” Dre, the Spanish-American in our midst who have been complaining about me since the game started reported as I dropped my cards and I won again.
“Hey, she didn’t cheat. She’s just good at it.” Edgar, who is always defending came to my rescue.
And we winked at each other. We were both in the cheating game since the other four, Mario, John, Alvaro and Dre knew the game so well.
“Tony, I need to buy more cards. Pass me that money!” I called out to him but he was busy taking a call and the next minute.
He came to my side and pulled me up. “Hey, where are you taking her?” Edgar chipped in and he shut him an angry glare.
“We have to go now Miss. Carmen.”
I frowned at him. “What? Why? I told you that I love this department and I start schooling here from today.”
“This is not the right way to go about it and Mr. Ricardo might come here, any moment from now.”
I gasped. “Is he the one that called you?”
He nodded and I was so stunned. Short of words. “Hope you didn’t tell him that I was gambling?”
And he did. His eyes and face said it all. I wanted to whack his head but thanks to my height, I couldn’t do that.
“Are you leaving already.” Edgar asked as he stood up on his feet.
I nodded.
“Yes. Er…I gotta go.”
“Wait. I mean, you can’t just leave.” And he grabbed my arm and pulled me along with him. “You need to have as much fun as possible before you leave. We’re celebrating the gods and today is absolutely for all the fun things we can lay our hands on! You need to have as much fun as possible before you can leave!”
And he took me to a whole new world. World of music, salsa, ballet, traditional dances which I’ve never seen before. World of drama, ancient dramas happening on stage, the Euripides, Sophocles plays and the rest of them.
Then the Cinderella stories.
The world of fashion, it was hilarious seeing different kind of girls dressed according to the ages when the fashion was in trend.
World of paintings, everything!!! I couldn’t stop feeling my eyes.
The colourful paintings and drawings, artistic figures, the colourful lights on the walls, even the girls, how adorned they were in Spanish local attires.
“You like what you see?” He asked watching me carefully while I nodded.
“Yes! Does this kind of event happen all the time here?”
He nodded. “Not quite often but there are so many things to find fun in this department. I can see that you’re new here Carmen. You look rich, are you from a rich home?”
Before I could reply; “My father is the fourth secretary for Mr. Sebastian.” He whispered feeling extremely proud and I nearly laughed at him.
Is he kidding me right now. Is that something to be proud of. “Really?”
“Yes. The fourth secretary, it’s not that easy to work for a man like that.” I smirked. “How about you? Who’s your father?”
“You don’t have to know.”
“I get it. You come from a problematic home. The type where your father has many wives, just like the CLINTS and he suddenly gets a child outside whom he can’t throw away, so he had to keep you away from the family, by sending you to a school like this__”
Not quite sure of what he’s saying but I agreed. It’s better than opening my mouth wide and talking about my father or my rich husband.
And he was pitying me. “You must be going through a lot. You don’t have to worry, I’ve got your back now.”
And he’s a talkative. I noticed. I smiled at him while he smiled back. “You look so young, how come you’re in school?”
“How young am I?”
“Like eighteen or lesser than that. You look twelve actually, no lies.”
Twelve!!!
Is that what Cardo thinks too? That I look twelve!
“And cute. You’re very cute.” He was pulling me away again. “Here, let’s taste those roasted meat over there. It used to be delicious, the last time I ate it was last year.”
Oh. I didn’t ask him that. But it’s fine and nice hearing him talk about that.
“Mmmm, yummy! Carmen, have this. Best in this school!” And he fed me the piece of meat.
It was actually very nice and I ate loads of it. He took me around so many interesting things in for display at the event.
Edgar is fun. He knows how to laugh. And he knows how to smile too. He knows how to make someone feel lively.
“Here, look at that.” He shouted as they started shooting fireworks.
And I think that’s when I remembered that it was night already.
Where’s Tony? Why haven’t he found me yet? Oh Sh|t! I gotta go.
Cardo…I bet he’s gonna skin me alive this time.
“Are you okay?”
“I gotta go home. It’s getting pretty late.”
“Oh. Yeah. Yeah. I forgot that you’ve got to go home.”
He led me out of the event room and I was shocked to see how dark everywhere have become. Except for the lights, here and there and the moon in the sky, to show how deep the night have gone.
My heart skipped a thousand times.
Cardo.
Oh Sh|t!
“Let me take you home.”
“No. I can go by myself.” I tried to hurry away but he caught up with me.
“Carmen, come on. You can’t possibly walk alone by yourself. Okay? I will take you home.”
“Carmen!!!!!!” I heard a voice which got my insides churning with fear.
I’ve never felt fear creep into me and seize me like that until I heard that voice.
“Edgar run!! Now!!” I yelled at him but he was confused. Or maybe trying to protect me from what I don’t know, either way, I pushed him away.
“Run if you want your life to be intact!! Now!!!”
“Why?”
“Just run and don’t ask questions!!!”
And he ran away in a confused manner. My heart beating faster and faster as I tried to locate that voice.
Cardo is gonna kill me today. What was I thinking? Sh|t! Sh|t! Sh|t!
“Carmen!!!” The voice came again, then the stomp of feet, then the suit, then the body, then the yellow eyes burning with anger, then the lips twisting.
He was Cardo.
