CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR
RICARDO’S POV
I watched her step out of the house and my heart broke into so many pieces. The fact that she have to be so collected and not speaking so much to me since we got discharged from the hospital made me feel so useless.
Like everything I was doing, isn’t worth it at all. I wish I can make everything go back to normal and the fact that it’s my fault made me feel more miserable.
My phone buzzed, Griffin was calling me. I took the call. “Yes, did you find out who killed the waitress?”
“Yes.” He affirmed.
A good piece of news. Two days ago, it came to my knowledge that the waitress we kept for questioning suddenly died, I asked my men to investigate on that and it came to my knowledge that she drank poison.
I was in so much anger, she was my only hope of confirming my suspicions, all the connections I had towards my relatives isn’t yielding a direct result, though I suspect all of them for what happened to Carmen, it doesn’t seem to be pointing to any direct person.
Though there’s my uncle which I think might be the cause of all this. But on a second thought, he’s not that bad towards me. He doesn’t speak much in every family gathering. He normally smiles a lot and hardly h@tës on me. Just a few words of encouragement and that’s all. And the past wiretapping calls I heard from his cellphones isn’t suspicious at all.
I know he frequently calls someone but they’re all business calls. Nothing else. I haven’t find time to put my mind towards him, not when my suspect all boils down to Juan and Bernadette who have been meeting people in secret these days.
But poison? Didn’t they go a bit too far this time?
“Who killed the waitress?” I asked taking a seat on the bench in the garden with a drink in my hand.
“It’s Lucia.”
I nearly spilled the drink on my clothes. “Lucia? Why did she have to kill the waitress?” My anger have began to rise.
My head was spinning with the information I had just received. I didn’t know what to believe or who to trust. I started to doubt everything I thought I knew. Were my suspicions about my relatives wrong? Was I focusing on the wrong people? Could someone else be responsible for what happened to Carmen?
I knew I had to clear my head and start afresh. I had to look at the evidence with a new perspective, without any preconceived notions. I needed to approach this case with a blank slate, and see where the evidence led me. I was determined to find the truth, no matter what it took. Something about this doesn’t feel right.
Something is off. While Juan and Bernadette are prime suspects, I can’t help but feel like there’s something more to this than meets the eye. Could it be possible that someone else is pulling the strings behind the scenes, manipulating everyone involved? Or is this just a wild hunch? I can’t shake the feeling that something is not adding up.
As I continue to ponder these questions, I hear a the door bell ring. I went over to the door, I opened it to find a man in a dark suit, holding an envelope. He’s my detective. He handed the envelope to me without a word, I opened the envelope and began to go through it.
“I’ve been following her in secret for a while now,” the detective said. “I’ve seen her meeting with your uncle, your sister, Bernadette and another random guy” I went through the pictures inside the envelope. “Here, she went into an unknown car infront of a club weeks ago. I think she may have been working with them this whole time. And I believe they’re the ones responsible for the attack on your wife. And the poisoning of the waitress.”
I was shocked. I know Lucia have always wicked and dubious but I didn’t know her to go this extra mile just to hurt Carmen! I couldn’t believe she would do something like this. But the detective seemed so sure. I trusted him and believed what he was saying.
“Do you have any evidence?” I asked.
“I have surveillance footage of Lucia meeting with your sister, Bernadette. I think that’s all I have to prove of her meeting with your relative.”
“There’s no picture of my uncle in this envelop, I have so many uncles and I’m finding it hard to tell which of my uncle she met with.”
“That’s what I can’t detect for now.”
“You don’t have a surveillance camera on that one?”
“I’m sorry that I’m not able to secure that part. But I’m so sure she met with Bernadette,” the detective said. “I can show you the footage if you’d like.”
I nodded, still in a state of shock. The detective pulled out a laptop from his bag and opened it up. He clicked through a few files until he found what he was looking for. He turned the laptop around so I could see the footage.
There she was, Lucia, in a dimly lit room with my sister Bernadette. They were talking in hushed tones, their faces obscured by the low light.
“I can’t hear what they’re saying,” I said, disappointment evident in my voice. “Is there any way to enhance the audio?”
The detective shook his head. “I’m sorry, I don’t have the capability to do that,” he said. “But we can still use this footage as evidence, if you’d like.”
I sat there, processing everything I had just heard. It’s so evident that Lucia was behind this. Why? Because of jealousy? Did it really take her that far enough to touch my Carmen? And she even killed someone to cover up her careless tracks?
“We can arrest her if you want.”
“No, I want you to start focusing on Bernadette, I want to know everything about where she’s going, who she’s meeting, everything!! And I want to know every details about my uncles.”
“Isn’t wiretapping working enough?”
“It’s almost fruitless, as if they know someone is spying on what they’re doing.”
The detective sighed. “You’re right, it does seem like they’re aware of your surveillance. I think we need to change our tactics. I’ll keep monitoring their activities, Mr. Griffin is helping out a lot too but, we may need to find other ways to gather evidence. Maybe we could install hidden cameras in their homes or offices. I know this sounds extreme, but I think it’s the only way to get the information we need.”
I was shocked by the detective’s suggestion. I didn’t want to violate anyone’s privacy, I’ve done that enough when I put tracking devices in their phones. But installing cameras in their homes? That’s extreme!
I thought about it for a moment, weighing the options. “I don’t like the idea of invading their privacy,” I said. “But I want to catch whoever is responsible for this. So, if these methods are the only way to get the information we need, then I’m willing to consider them.”
The detective nodded. “I understand your reservations,” he said. “But I assure you that we will use these methods only as a last resort, and only if they are absolutely necessary.”
I took a deep breath and nodded. “Alright, let’s do it.”
“That’s fine. I will have my men do it secretly if only you will drop their addresses for me.”
“Mr. Griffin will help you with that.”
“Sure, but then…you need to be careful of everyone around you, I don’t think here is safe for your wife at all. I don’t think so.”
“I know Mr. Detective and that’s why I’m doing all I can to know the person who is doing all he can to get to me. If I make it a public thing, the person might know what I’m thinking and planning for him.”
He nodded his head. “I understand what you’re arriving at. I get it. You told me the last time that you’re going to France tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I’ve been pushing it away for a while now and it’s high time I take care of business.”
“Alright,” he was ready to leave. “What are you going to do with Lucia?”
I gulped. I don’t want to tell him. It’s going to be against the law and I don’t want to talk about law and anti-law infront of him right now.
“What if I tell you that you won’t like the answer to your question?”
“And what if I told you to leave Lucia alone? From what I know about Carmen, she’s not going to let her be.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Did you not check the news?”
The news??!
“Yeah, your wife is doing a wonderful job Mr. Man, Your Carmen is something else,” I still don’t understand what he’s trying to say.
He sighed after watching me for a while, “I understand your concerns, and I don’t want to dissuade you from doing what you feel is best. But I do want to offer some advice.” He paused, as if gathering his thoughts. “I think it would be wise to have security with you at all times, even in France. I can put you in touch with some of my contacts there, people who can provide protection for you and your wife.”
My wife? Oh yeah, I wasn’t planning on leaving Carmen behind but his offer… I was taken aback by his offer. He smirked, patted my shoulder and left, leaving me in a state of confusion.
What news could he be talking about? Did Carmen do something I didn’t know about? I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach, a sense of dread. What if this was something bad? I needed to find out what was going on. I needed to find out what my wife had been up to. I rushed to my computer and started searching through the news. What could I have missed?
After an hour of searching, I finally found what I was looking for. My wife had been all over the headlines.
MRS. RICARDO OFFERS TO MAKE PEACE WITH MISS LUCIA, HER HUSBAND’S EX GIRLFRIEND AFTER TWO WEEKS OF MAKING A GRAND APPEARANCE TO THE ALEJANDROZZ.
MRS. CARMEN IS REALLY A NICE PERSON
RUMOURED WIFE OF MR. RICARDO IS ON A LIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE WORLD’S HOTTEST ACTRESS
LUCIA AND CARMEN: A FRIENDSHIP TO SPROUT.
IS THEIR FRIENDSHIP GENUINE: LUCIA LOOKS SAD OVER AN ALLEGED FRIENDSHIP PROPOSAL FROM MRS. CARMEN.
AN EXAMPLE OF A HOME BUILDER MRS. CARMEN DECIDES TO BE FRIENDS WITH THE HUSBAND’S EX.
RARE GEM: EVERY MAN’S DREAM, CARMEN.
CARMEN’S GIST: THE LITTLE TEENAGER IS NOT ONLY A TROUBLESOME PERSON, SHE’S ALSO A WOMAN WHO DESIRES PEACE.
TEENAGER AND A MAN SNATCHER TRIES TO MAKE PEACE.
I was speechless. Carmen! Does she know about Lucia being the one who poisoned her?
Just what the heck was she thinking when she dressed up and left the house without telling me anything!
Did she know that Lucia is the person who did this to us? Did she know about anything?! Just what’s these gap between us for the past few weeks? What are we not telling each other? Why is she meeting Lucia? Is that her own way of revenge?
From the videos from the interview, I can virtually see that Carmen is torturing Lucia, the smiles, looks, facial expressions and even helping her to eat the meal.
As I read through the articles, and watched the videos, my heart filled with a mixture of emotions. I was impressed and proud of Carmen, but I was also a little jealous of all the attention she was getting. And I was still confused about what the detective had meant when he said she was “all over the headlines.” It wasn’t clear to me what he meant by that. I needed to talk to him, to get some more answers. I picked up the phone and called him.
The detective picked up on the third ring. “Hello?” he said, sounding a bit out of breath.
“Hi,” I said, trying to sound calm. “I just wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Sure, what’s up?” he asked, sounding more composed.
“I was just reading some of the headlines about my wife, and I was a little confused by what you said earlier.”
“Ah, yes, I understand your confusion,” he said, sounding apologetic. “I know I didn’t explain myself very well.”
“What I meant by ‘all over the headlines’ was that your wife is the topic of a lot of news articles right now. There are a lot of stories being written about her. Some of them are positive, like the ones about her heroic acts. But some of them are negative, like the ones speculating about her motives or making assumptions about her character. I know that can be frustrating for you, to see so much speculation and rumor-mongering about your wife.”
“It is frustrating,” I said, relieved to finally understand what he meant.
“I just want to assure you that I don’t believe any of the negative things that are being said about your wife. I think she’s a remarkable person, and I’m impressed by everything she’s accomplished. I hope you don’t let the negative headlines get you down. Your wife is an amazing woman, and she doesn’t deserve to be judged by the opinions of strangers.”
I was touched by his words, and I found myself fighting back tears. I wasn’t sure why his support meant so much to me, but it did.
“I’m glad you called,” the detective said. “I want you to know that I’m here for you, and I’m on your side. If you ever need someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I know how difficult this must be for you, and I want to do wh@tëver I can to help.”
I was overwhelmed by his kindness, and I found myself struggling to find the right words to say. “Thank you,” I finally managed to say. “It means a lot to me that you’re willing to listen and offer your support. It’s been a difficult time.”
I hung up feeling so relieved but I needed to connect to Carmen. I don’t know what she’s upto and anything she might be planning for anyone might be dangerous, to her and to anyone she’s executing her plan to.
The fate of her pregnancy is not fully decided, she’s not very much herself and I don’t want any harm to come to her, not again, I don’t think I will be myself if that ever happens.
I took up my phone and called Mr. Griffin. “Yes?? How many bodyguards did my wife leave with?”
“As many as I can count. She’s safe, I’m sure of it.”
“She’s with Lucia, do you know that?”
“I know, that’s why I asked Mr. Mando to check up on her every now and then.”
I sighed. “Have the flights been booked?”
“Yes, and Mr. Detective phoned me few seconds ago, he asked for assistance.”
“Yeah, I told him you will help him out. He’s going to help with the securities in France so don’t worry about that. Focus more on organising the company.”
“Yes sir.”
“Did you get a new design studio set up for me?”
“Yes, just like you wanted.”
I want to fulfill Carmen’s desperate wish, which is for me to get into designing. My talent and calling since I was born and I’ve been ignoring it in order to make things right in my family and I guess I’ve got it all wrong, I need to make it right now.
For the sake of my Carmen and for the sake of our baby.
“Okay.” I hung up and relaxed back into the couch. I wanted to go outside into the garden and continue watching the sceneries, I was too weak to do anything. Every truth I uncover by myself hurts like hell.
For the fact that I have to look Carmen in the eye every time and try to sort out her feelings and it all end up fruitless kills me so much. I feel so worthless sometimes, especially now that I see the negative comments about her floating around the internet.
Will she break? I fear that someday she might break into to two due to the things being said about her.
I picked up the phone and dialed Carmen’s number. After a few rings, she answered, her voice soft and hesitant. “Hello?” she said, sounding a bit confused.
“Hey, it’s me, Cardo,” I said, trying to sound reassuring. “How are you doing?”
There was a long pause before she answered. “I’m okay,” she said, but her voice lacked conviction.
“Are you sure?” I pressed, wanting to get to the bottom of how she was feeling. “I know things have been tough lately. I just want to make sure you’re doing okay.”
“I’m infront of the door.” She said and I stood up from the couch immediately and advanced towards the door, I opened it and there she stood with a phone pressed to her ear.
Our eyes met. A lump came to my heart immediately.
My Carmen.
Her face was gaunt, and her eyes were red and puffy. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days. “Carmen,” I wanted to reach out and hold her immediately.
“I feel like I’m losing my mind,” I said, my voice cracking. “I’m so worried about you. You look so tired, and you sound so worn out. I want to help you, but I don’t know how. I just want to make this all go away.”
I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself. I reached out and took her hand in mine. “I love you so much,” I said, my voice shaking. “And I’m here for you, no matter what. We’ll get through this.”
She looked at me, her eyes filled with tears. Her eyes burned into mine. “I confronted Lucia, I shook her to her bones, she was shivering in every look she gave me. I need not be told that she’s the person that poisoned me.”
My heart felt tormented because of her heartbreaking voice. She can be strong but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t feel anything. She’s the frail being I met months ago.
I led her into the house, and the door was closed by the bodyguards. I gestured for her to sit on the couch, and I took a seat next to her.
“Cardo, Lucia poisoned me.”
“I know.”
“You knew? Then what are you waiting for? Why are you not doing anything to her? Why are you making me to h@të you so much these days?”
“Carmen, in as much she did it, someone is behind her. I can’t say if it’s Bernadette or some other person but she didn’t do this on her own and I’m planning on getting to the root of this.”
She stood up. “The roof of what exactly?”
“I don’t want to make any rash decision which will put you in so much danger. Lucia was a bait and the person who put her out there is waiting for me to get her before he can make another move.”
A long defeaning pause between us. Like she was trying to recollect her thoughts and it killed me so much because I don’t know what she’s thinking or what she’s planning on doing.
“I know. That’s why I’m doing things my own way too.” She said calmly and strolled out of the room while I stood up and rushed after her.
“Carmen listen.” I said as I got into the room.
“I’m listening.” She stopped and turned to look at me.
“Carmen.”
“What?”
“Let’s go to Paris tomorrow.”
“And what will that save us from?”
“I’m going on a business trip and I won’t want you to be alone in this place. I want to be with you at all times, in this crucial moment.”
“Cardo…” I saw another trace of tears in her eyes and I rushed towards her, held her in my arms immediately. She should cry, cry on me baby girl. You’ve been holding it in for a long time.
“Cardo…”
“Don’t worry, I will make everybody pay for all the pain they caused us.”
She stopped crying and looked up to my face, she palmed my face. “that’s why I invited Lucia and Bernadette to our house this evening.”
“What?”
“I invited them to come over and join us for dinner.”
“But why?”
“I’m going to poison them. Just a little bit of poison which will scare them for a moment.”
“Carmen___”
“A bait for a bait and an eye for an eye…”
What???
