CHAPTER SIXTY EIGHT

RICARDO’S POV

She stood infront of me, tears in her eyes and I couldn’t help but force her in to my arms, embracing her, holding her close, listening to her careful whimpers, my hands digging deep into her hair, trying to soothe her.

I repeatedly whispered into her ears that everything is almost over, we only have Bernadette to deal with, the funeral to take care of and we can finally live the life we have always wanted to live.

And she gripped me tighter, she didn’t wanna let go. “I said bye to Edgar, I said bye to him even when I knew that he’s not my problem, even when I knew that he’s a victim too.”

I kissed her hair, sharing my breathe with her, trying harder to calm her down. It’s never been easy since the past few days but we’re almost there.

“Edgar was innocent, Edgar didn’t do anything wrong Cardo,” she kept whimpering.

“But I told you not to see him.”

“I wanted to cleanly end things with him.” She said lifting up her face and burning her sad eyes into mine. I felt like breaking up, seeing Carmen sad is never good for me at all.

I hugged her head to my chest, my fingers touching her smooth face and coming in contact with her hot tears.

Bringing Lucas to book have been the hardest thing to do, Juan is facing trial in court for aiding and abetting, stealing, including Fernando and Diego, the family is in total turmoil and I won’t stop until I bring everyone to their place.

I pulled back from the hug, and looked into her eyes. I wanted to say something that would reassure her, something that would make her feel safe. But I couldn’t find the words, my mind was blank. So I did the only thing I could think of – I leaned forward and kissed her.

Something I’ve been wanting to do since I walked out of Lucas’s den alive. It have not been easy, Lucas isn’t someone to deal with so easily, he’s a beast, that’s why he was able to fool us for a long time. I kissed her harder, like I’ve never done that before. My hands sank into her soft skin, I tried pulling her closer, I was so hungry for her.

I missed her, I’ve barely seen her since I left for Lucas house until this morning when I announced to her about Mr. Rogers, her father’s secretary, we talked about it, what she knew about him and what I knew and it happened to be that he was Edgar’s father.

Mr. Rogers is the reason why his son have been acting up around them. His involvement in both companies isn’t something I could take, likewise Carmen, she couldn’t take it, that man have been threatening her father’s life in secret all this time.

Carmen’s heart which never yields or softens for anyone didn’t take time looking for measures, she just simply told me that she’s gonna hunt him down, and that’s what she did.

I was worried about her. I know that she might not be close to Edgar anymore, still, they were friends. It might hurt her and as I predicted, she was back here in my arms crying.

When the kiss ended, we both stood there, lost in each other’s eyes. We didn’t say anything, we didn’t need to.

In that moment, everything was perfect, and we were exactly where we wanted to be. In that moment, Carmen became calmer than before.

After a few moments, she broke the silence.

“I’ve located where Bernadette is, she’s hiding in Lockus Hall, California.” She said to me.

“She won’t hide there for long, her daughter is back here in Spain.” I said and then recalled what Lucas told me when I wrestled him. “Do you know that Bernadette have been sleeping with my uncle, that little girl is Uncle Lucas child.”

“What?” She was startled. “What did you just say?”

“You heard me,” I said, my voice heavy with sadness. “That little girl is Lucas child, I don’t know how and I can’t explain but Bernadette,” I stared into the space, as if Bernadette was there looking at me, “I don’t know what she was thinking when she turned this bad.” I felt bad for my sister.

Really bad for her.

She must’ve been treated so unfairly by my father, she must’ve been pushed to the wall so badly to turn to Lucas, and dangerously, Lucas may have used her until she became the person she’s not.

The person no one can recognize.

“I don’t know what came over her and I’m scared for her.”

Really scared for her.

I could see the concern in Carmen’s eyes, and I could tell that she was trying to think of a solution. “I think we need to talk to your uncle,” she said after a moment.

“You mean Lucas?!” I asked as her words sounded unbelievable in my ears. “We just locked him up and he’s still acting around tryna wriggle his way out of this.”

“More reason to catch Bernadette because as long as Bernadette is on the loose, he will always tryna use her for the sake of the child.”

I sighed out and sat down on the couch, I made her sit down on top of my laps. “I’m never going to forgive Bernadette, not even my sisters. I won’t forgive them all.” She made me rest my head on her chest.

I inhaled her, the sweet scent of her body. Always intoxicating. “I will never forgive Bernadette,” I repeated while she continued to pat my back.

She ran her fingers through my hair, soothing me with her touch. “You don’t have to forgive them,” she said. “Forgiveness is a personal choice, and it’s not something that anyone can force you to do. It’s okay to feel angry and betrayed, and you don’t have to forgive them just because they’re family. Just know that I’m here for you, no matter what.”

Her words were so much unlike Carmen, can she be less unpredictable in her life. “What about you? Are you ever gonna forgive her, are you ever gonna forgive my sisters?”

“We won’t forgive Bernadette, never will we ever forgive her, or your sisters for always stressing me out.”

And we sat in silence thinking of everything that happened, everything that we’ve went through, social medias have been so busy since three days ago because of my family.

And it will get busier because the person they really want to be brought to book haven’t been captured yet, at least I need to get Bernadette to them so we can all end this peacefully.

“What about Lucia? She’s locked up fine right?” She asked me and I nodded my head.

“Yeah, She’s a ghost of herself when I visited her yesterday.”
Her sad teary eyes and her pale lips, how lean one can go in a short space of time, the world is not even giving her a chance to explain herself further. A wicked soul__that’s how everyone sees her, how her fans sees her, malicious comments everywhere.

“Don’t tell me you’re thinking of Lucia right now?” She asked peering into my face and I shook my head repeatedly.

“No, I’m not thinking of her.” I lied.

She rolled her eyes, “You’re actually thinking of her.” She insisted.

“I’m not, I just worry about her.” I defended.

“Same thing, isn’t it?”

Carmen will never stop being jealous over little things. Would she? I brushed her hair bangs and she pouted greatly. “You told me that you don’t love her anymore and yet, you’re thinking about her?”

“I’m not thinking about her in the way you’re putting it.” And Carmen is back again with her arguing attitude, and I think she came back this time with full force and I have to be careful since she’s so close to me. She might hit me before I know it.

“In the way I’m putting it? How exactly am I putting it? You probably pity her, don’t you?”

“I__” oh yeah, of course I pity her but saying it to Carmen might get me a smack on my head. “Carmen can you stop this?”

“Oh, because she’s the first woman you’ve ever slept with right?” She furrowed her brows at me.

“That’s not it at all,” I protested, but I knew it was a weak argument. I couldn’t deny that Lucia had been my first, and that she held a special place in my heart, even if I no longer loved her. “I just feel bad for her, that’s all. I don’t want her to be alone and miserable.”

Carmen sighed, her eyes softening slightly. “I know you’re a good person, and you have a big heart. But you need to remember that not everyone deserves your sympathy. Not after what she did to me! Is your first sëx with her more important than the fact that she almost killed me?!”

She yelled getting off me and standing up, her hands crossed on her chest.

Isn’t she trying to ruin the whole mood? I mean, why is she getting angry?

“Carmen, I don’t love Lucia and I h@të her for what happened but now that I see her locked up in detention center, I can’t help but pity her.”

“Pity her?! Why would you pity someone like her? Probably because she’s your first sëx? She must’ve treated you better than I did.

I thought we talked about this before?

“We did, but I can’t help how I feel,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “I’m not comparing you to her, I’m just saying that I feel bad for her. I know she did horrible things, but I can’t help but feel sympathy for her. I’m not trying to make you feel like you’re not important to me, because you are. You’re the one I love, and the only one I want to be with.”

Carmen looked at me, her expression unreadable. “Tell me, do I rile you up more than she used to? Did you feel like you wanna hold her when you went there all by yourself yesterday?”

“Carmen.” I tried to stop her, I stood up stepping close to her.

“I want to know because I’ve been trying to know why you will visit her all by yourself without telling me?”

“But you visited Edgar all by yourself without telling me.”

“You’re bringing Edgar into this! I never loved Edgar, but you loved Lucia, up to the time we met.” She argued fiercely.

Oh God!

“I understand why you’re upset,” I said, trying to keep my voice level. “But you’re comparing apples and oranges. You never had any romantic feelings for Edgar, while I did have feelings for Lucia. But those feelings are in the past. I’m with you now, and I want to be with you. I didn’t go to visit Lucia to relive the past, I went there as someone who wanted to know why she had to do what she did. Why she had to put my own wife in danger.”

Carmen looked at me, while I kept advancing towards her, she kept pulling back. She was still ready to argue with me I think. I looked behind her, she was almost nearing the glassy wall. A perfect chance to get a hold of her.

“But you were still worried about her.” She insisted. “Why does Lucia affect you so much? Your expression just now said it all.”

“Just like you came home crying because of Edgar.”

“Can you stop putting Edgar into this! Edgar is innocent!! He didn’t hurt anyone, the world have been so cruel towards him so let him stay out of this!”

Her back touched the wall and I hovered over her immediately, caged her so she won’t slip away. I took a deep breathe and sighed out. “Carmen I’m sorry. I’m very sorry for worrying about Lucia even after what she did to you.”

“Can you keep that to yourself? I don’t wanna hear it.” She said and tried looking away from me.

“I’m sorry Carmen, won’t you forgive me just this once. Won’t you wanna hear the things we talked about yesterday.”

She rolled her eyes at me immediately, “You wanna tell me that you guys reminisced about the past? How she kissed you and how she always made you feel?” She scoffed. “I don’t wanna know.”

I came close, I lifted her jaw to look at my face. “How about we talk on how you make me feel when you kiss and touch me?”

Her face flushed immediately. I guess my words still move her as much. The flush vanished almost immediately. “Don’t try and change the topic Cardo, don’t think of__” I pecked her on her upper lips and she froze for some seconds.

“You must’ve kissed Lucia like this right? That’s why she had the guts to think of__” I shunned her by pressing my finger to her soft lips.

“Shush,” I whispered into her ears while I carried her up to meet me up here, (in the taller height world) she crossed her legs around my waist with her back on the wall.

“Can we stay a while without talking about anything but ourselves?” I let my words settle into her. “Can we be by ourselves without worrying about our heartaches for a while? Hmmm??”

She looked at me, her eyes searching mine. “I want to,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t want to fight with you, I just want to be with you. I want to feel safe in your arms, and forget about everything else. I just want to be with you.”

I pressed my lips to her forehead, and felt her relax against me. “Just be with me, okay?” I said, pulling her close. “Let’s just be here together, and enjoy each other’s company. Just for now.”

And so we stood there, locked in each other’s embrace, for what felt like an eternity.

I felt her breathing slow and her body relax, as if the tension and worry had melted away. I held her close, savoring the feeling of her in my arms. It was just us, lost in each other’s presence.

After a while, I felt her stir in my arms. “Are you okay? Are you feeling better now?” I asked, my voice hushed.

“I’m more than okay,” she said, her voice filled with contentment.

Then she smiled. “I just don’t like when you worry about someone like Lucia, it tips me off especially when she’s your ex.”

I brushed her hair with my hands. “She’s my ex but she’s not someone that I can’t do without, she showed me how the world can be cruel and foolish, she played me yunno, I have no feeling left for her. It’s just pity and worry, that’s all.”

She glared at me.

“You’re the center of my world Carmen, you thought me how to fight for myself, more especially, you’re the only person who always took my side in this whole world. It always feels good to have you.”

She giggled, her hands circling around my neck.

“What do you think we should do when everything dies down?” She asked me, taking me off guard, I haven’t thought about that.

“Maybe we will take time off and take care of each other for a while.”

“And maybe we will take a trip to Paris and see Victoria, don’t you think so?” She said looking up to my face and I felt a little guilty because I haven’t explained everything about the existence of Victoria and many other children in my life.

“It’s fine, I’m not mad at you anymore, you’re my Cardo anyway.” She said as if she read my facial expression and knew what I was thinking already.

“Carmen__”

She touched my face and stopped me from talking. “I like Victoria and even though I just met her, I miss her. I promised her that I’m gonna see her when everything is sound and clear.”

I smiled, “Carmen is fond of someone.” That’s hard.

“Come on, Victoria is sweet, she loves reading, isn’t that why you got a library for her?”

My face flushed, my attachment to Victoria isn’t something I can explain.

“I see, at this point, you can even buy a house for Victoria. I’m jealous.”

“But I bought you this house Carmen.”

“Yeah! I know, you got me a house__” she heaved, “But who knows if you’re gonna get a house for Victoria too, that library is too big for__”

“Carmen, stop,” I said, laughing. “You’re being silly now. Victoria is just a girl.”

“I’m a girl too,” she insisted. “She talks, she feels and she even reads. She’s even intelligent, maybe smarter than I am. How can you not fall in love with her?”

“Because I have you,” I said, my voice filled with love and sincerity. “And no one can ever replace you. I bought this house for you, not for Victoria. I care for Victoria and I know that, I enjoy playing with her, but I love you because you’re everything to me.”

And it hit me!

“Are you being jealous right now, Carmen?” I asked finding it funny.

“Jealous? Why would I be jealous of Victoria? She is just a little girl.”

“She’s fifteen.” I said. “You’re just three years older than her.” I pressed her back softly into the wall, enjoying the jealous look on her face.

“Which makes her a little girl, I’m older than her means she’s still a baby.” She defended looking so cute.

“Why are you getting so worked up?”

“Cuz I like her, she read me so many stories and promised to read more for me. And actually, they were all interesting stories, my stay wasn’t lonely at all because of her. You might love her that same way, she’s lovable.”

“Yeah, she’s lovable.”

“You see, someday, you might cheat on me with her, right?”

Is she being serious right now?

Carmen!!

“Come on, she’s my daughter.” I nudged her.

“Alright fine, put me down. I’m feeling on edge this night and I get it, you’re trying to spell it out to me by all means.”

But I didn’t put her down. I continued to hold her close, not wanting to let go.

“I’m sorry if I made you feel like you weren’t the only one in my life,” I said, my voice full of remorse. “But I love only you and that’s forever.”

She softened, “I know, I just don’t know why I’m feeling so bad right now.”

Her mood reminded me of how hard I tried to meet up with her in Paris, I even got her a flower to please her, the ugly day which took my father’s life.

“Even though you stress me out Carmen, I will always love you.”

“So I stress you out huh?” She rolled her eyes.

I think she’s hellbent on picking a fight in everything I say this night.

Suddenly, a knock came at the door. I looked at her, and she looked just as surprised as I was. Who could be knocking at this hour?

The knock came again, louder this time. “Are you expecting company?” I asked her.

“No, I’m not,” she said, her brow furrowed in confusion. “Maybe it’s the food delivery? The maids might’ve ordered something.”she said shrugging. “Or maybe it’s Stephen, he haven’t been around.”

“Do you think so?” I wondered aloud. “It’s already getting pretty late for them to order anything. Maybe it’s the guards.”

The knock came again, more insistent this time. “I guess we’ll have to find out,” I said, reluctantly releasing my hold on her.

She held me back. “Have the guards open it.”

“Don’t worry, they’ve been so worn for the past few days, I can get the door myself.”

I walked to the door, glancing back at her one last time before opening it. To my surprise, it was not the food deliveries who stood on the other side of the door.

It was Bernadette, on disguise but I knew and could tell that it was her.

“Bernadette.” I called and she pulled out a gun and pressed it gently to my stomach immediately.

“Long time brother.”
