Chapter 38
The car sped off immediately,leaving an unconscious Daphne lying on the road while a police vehicle followed behind, chasing after it.
Lex wasted no time in rushing to her. A horrified look was plastered on his face.
He knelt beside her when he got to her and raised her head with shaky hands.
“Hey, Daphne”He called fearfully. Her eyes remained shut. He tapped her hoping she would open her eyes but she didn’t. His fears increased.
He hurriedly brought out his phone to call an ambulance.
He put down his phone afterwards, muttering a series of ‘please’ as he looked down at her.

“Hey”Erik said softly to Kiara who kept avoiding his eyes. “You’re really going to leave me feeling all confused? You, working for me because of a reason your stepmom made you believe and you finding out it’s a lie… Kiara”He sighed seeing she was still keeping her face away from him. “Kiara” He called again.
Kiara swallowed and released a sigh afterwards.
She looked up to face him.
Erik exhaled, feeling relieved that she was now facing him.
“Listen,I know you’re feeling confused because you’re finding it hard to believe everything I just said but it’s the truth and even if you actually find it confusing,you don’t really need to understand everything I said. You just need to understand that I’m a terrible person. My intention towards you was never good from the start. I was a tool to help ruin you,your career… I’m not the good person I pretended to be”She said, staring at him.
Erik stared back at her also, summing-up everything she’s told him.
Kiara felt him release her hand from his hold. She swallowed,glancing at their separated hands before bringing her eyes to his, trying to decipher what he could be thinking from the look on his face.
He seemed to finally understand what she was trying to tell him and no doubt he looked shocked.
Erik looked down at Kiara not knowing how to react to everything she just told him. He couldn’t hide his disbelief and shock though. She was working for him due to some story her step mum made up? He need not be told that the story was made up because his father never partnered with anybody outside of Tech Builders. Tech Builders was the only business his father focused on and had been the sole owner of it.
In her words,she only just found out that the story was made up but the question remains why she would agree to do such thing when she knew it was wrong? She knew it was wrong but still accepted to do it,why? Also,what was the real reason her stepmom asked her to work for him since the reason she gave to Kiara was made up?
He wanted answers to those questions. He wasn’t ready to see her as the guilty person she’s been painting herself as. He didn’t want to. He wasn’t going to judge her so quickly or judge her at all once he heard her reasons. He loved her way too much to do that.
Just when he opened his mouth to talk,her phone rang.
Kiara ignored her call. Hearing what Erik had to say was more important. She was ready for the things he had to say. They may be hurtful but she deserved it.
The call persisted, interrupting Erik once more.
“Pick it”He said quietly with a blank expression.
The blank expression on his face made her question herself if she was really ready for his reaction and what he had to say. He was angry at her,no doubt. He probably h@tës her now and wanted to tell her in his words…
“Pick it”Erik said again.
Kiara swallowed before looking down at the ringing phone in her hand. ‘Lex’ was written on the screen.
Why was he calling her? It’s been months since she’s had a phone call from him.
She glanced at Erik before picking up.
“Kiara”She heard Lex’s voice. He sounded restless.
“Wh… what’s wrong?”She asked. She could sense that something was wrong from the way he sounded.
Her eyes widened and her body shook when she heard his next sentence. She felt tears rush to her eyes and her heartbeat became tensed. Her phone fell from her hand immediately after Lex hung up the call.
“What’s wrong?” Erik asked seeing how she dropped her phone and how her eyes suddenly became teary.
“Daphne…I have to go”She didn’t bother picking up her phone before running off.
Tears rolled down her face as she ran.
Erik picked her phone before running after her.
Despite everything he’s heard her say,the truth behind her working for him,he couldn’t leave her that way,all by herself.
Kiara kept running, bumping into people in the process.
She finally got to the sidewalk and tried flagging down a cab while wiping her tears with her other hand. Lex had told her the name of the hospital Daphne was taken to.
A car halted beside her and the door opened immediately.
She took a step back on seeing who came out of it – Thomas.
“Kiara”He smiled at her.
“Get away from me”She said sternly, taking another step back but he held her hand.
If he had the intention of talking to her,he must be out of his mind if he thought she would give him a chance to speak to her.
She h@tëd the fact that she was seeing his face right in front of hers. And presently,she was more bothered about getting to Daphne.
“I don’t have time for this”She said and tried to jerk his hands off but he tightened his grip around her hand and moved closer to her.
She suddenly became dizzy and found it difficult to keep her stance. She looked down at her arm and saw Thomas pull out a syringe from it.
Thomas smiled at her as he secretly pulled out the syringe he had pierced in her arm so he wouldn’t arouse suspicion from passers-by.
“Wh…”Kiara’s eyes closed before she could complete her sentence.
Thomas placed an hand behind her head, allowing her head to fall on his chest. He later wrapped an arm around her shoulder, faking smiles at passers-by as he placed her in the backseat, pretending she was drunk.
Erik lost Kiara in the crowd but he knew she was headed for the main road so that was where he went.
He got to the sidewalk and almost immediately,a car drove past him. He caught a glimpse of the person seated at the backseat – Kiara.
He sighed. He wanted to go with her to wherever she was headed. He had to. She looked tensed and distressed and remembering that she left that way,alone, increased his restlessness.
He did some quick thinking before turning on her phone, dialing the number that called her last.
The person picked after a few seconds and the voice sounded familiar.
“Are you on your way yet?”The person asked, thinking Kiara was the one who called. He remembered the voice being that of the guy who once spilled coffee on Kiara’s shoes.
“I’m the one who called you not Kiara”He said.
“Mr Erik?”
“Yeah, please can you tell me where Kiara is headed? You were the one who called her right?”
“Yeah,I told her to come meet me at the hospital. Daphne got involved in an accident” He sounded restless just like Erik.
“What? Which hospital?”His eyes widened.

Thomas smirked as he turned to glance at Kiara at the backseat. She was still unconscious and she would be that way for twelve hours.
His phone rang and he picked up immediately knowing who the caller was.
“Did you get Kiara yet?”Natasha’s voice sounded at the other end.
“Yeah”He answered “How did it go with Daphne?”
“You should have been there. It was such a beautiful scene”
He smiled”You didn’t get in trouble with the cops did you?”
“They were no match for me. I outran them in a matter of seconds”She said, feeling proud of herself.
“Now,we execute our plan”She said.
He nodded with a wide grin.
