{ LIFE IS A MYSTERY }

< ᴋɪɴɢ ɢʀᴀʜᴀᴍ'ꜱ ᴘᴀʟᴀᴄᴇ >

“Dahlia, we need to talk.” Ixora, first wife to the king said, following the demon queen from behind.

“I don’t want to have any conversation with you. At least not right now.” Dahlia yelled without stopping.

Ixora activated her vampire speed and flashed in front of Dahlia, blocking her path.

“We need to talk,” She said firmly.

“Talk about what exactly? I don’t understand. When did we start having something to talk about?”

“I know you have always been avoiding me and Thea. But listen, I don’t care right now. We really need to talk.”

“Excuse me? First of all, I have not been avoiding any one of you. Instead, you both h@të me, and guess what? I don’t give a Füçk. Secondly, I am not in the mood to talk to you or anybody else. Get out of my way!”

Ixora stubbornly remained in her way, giving her a challenging look.

“You are right. I h@të you. And I have never for once pretended to like you or your… daughter. But as I’ve said before, we need to talk urgently. You might have nothing to say to me however, I have a lot to say to you.”

Dahlia stayed mute for a moment before letting out a sigh and nodding her head.

“Fine. What do you want to talk about?”

Ixora looked around as if trying to see if they were alone but turns out they weren’t.

There were some guards and maids around, doing one thing or the other but neither of them paid attention to the two queens.

“We can’t have the conversation here. Follow me.” She said and started walking away.

“I just hope this conversation is worth my time. If not,” Dahlia muttered as she followed the woman.

••••••••••••

Dahlia and Ixora got to an open space in the backyard of the palace.

There were a few guards there but Ixora chased them all away, leaving her alone with the succubus.

It was silent for a period until Dahlia got tired of waiting for Ixora to start talking and spoke up.

“Did you bring me here to stare at my face or what?” She snapped.

“So short-tempered. Just like your daughter.”

“Oh, thanks for the compliment.” Dahlia sarcastically said, rolling her eyes and looking away.

“Was that a sarcastic response?”

“Obviously. Are you stupid?”

Ixora laughed, crossing her arms over her chest and tilting her head to the side.

“You will never change, Dahlia. Never.”

Dahlia glared at the woman, already getting pissed off.

“I do not have the time to exchange words with you, Ixora. You are the least of my problems because I have other better things to worry about. So if you have absolutely nothing to talk about then get out of my_”

“I overheard your conversation with the king.” She cut her off immediately.

Dahlia pinched her brows together as a deep frown plastered her face.

“What?” She gasped out.

“I said I overheard your conversation with_”

“I heard what you said the first time. Wait a minute, were you eavesdropping on the king and I discussion?”

“Eavesdropping?” Ixora repeated, shaking her head. “Nah, I won’t call that eavesdropping.”

Dahlia scoffed, stepping close to her co-wife and closing the gap between them.

“Do you know how serious this offense is? You have no right to eavesdrop on other people’s conversation, you Bîtch!”

“Maybe I don’t. But I still did. Listen, my intention was not to eavesdrop. I initially came there to spend some time alone with the king when I heard your voice… I was going to walk away until you said something very interesting, ‘I don’t want to lose my only daughter, Graham. I am scared of fate taking its course. I don’t think I can live without Lilith by my side.’” She recited Dahlia’s exact words, smiling. “Interesting, isn’t it?”

“Are you… mocking me?” She narrowed her eyes a little bit. “Did you like what you heard?” Ixora said nothing, smiling silently. “ANSWER ME!”

“YES.” She answered at the top of her voice, vigorously nodding her head as a yes. “I liked- no, I loved what I heard, dear demon. Do you know what went through my head at that point? ‘Ah, finally, she will know what it feels like to lose a child.’ You think the whole world revolves around you, don’t you? Get down from your high horse and face reality.”

Dahlia’s eyes changed into red and in a flash, she wrapped her fingers around the vampire’s neck, seizing air from her lungs.

Ixora started laughing, not bothered that she was getting strangled.

Dahlia screamed angrily and hit the vampire’s back against a brick wall, choking her even more.

“I swear I will kill you.” She grunted.

“What are you waiting for then? Kill me!” Ixora roared. “Lilith is going to find out the truth very soon. Didn’t I warn you? I told you that this secret you conceal will be your nightmare. I can see the fear in your eyes. It tortures you to know that your daughter is this close to finding out the truth.” She smirked. “The dog that you feed will end up biting your hand, Dahlia.”

“Stop talking and shut up.”

“What? Does the truth hurt, huh? Decades ago I lost my daughter because of you. You Füçking killed her.”

“Point of correction, the king killed her. Not me.”

“He killed her because you made him to. Because of you, I lost my beautiful princess. You are going to go through the same pain that I went through after losing my child because of your selfishness. Mark my words.”

“Lilith will not find out the truth, I promise you that.”

“Are you promising me or yourself?” Ixora chuckled. “We both know how curious Lilith can be at times She is ready to go any length for the truth. So tell me, how long are you going to keep concealing the truth from her?”

“As long as possible, you hear me? I’ve hidden the truth from her for a hundred years and I will do it over and over and over and over and OVER AGAIN.”

“Good luck trying then.”

Dahlia let go of Ixora’s neck and took a step back, clenching and unclenching her fist.

“I will protect my daughter at all costs. Nothing is going to happen to her.”

“You don’t sound convincing.”

Dahlia turned around and walked away.

Ixora slightly coughed and pushed herself off the wall, straightening her dress before staring at Dahlia’s retreating form.

“Your misery has just begun, demon.” She muttered through clenched teeth.

“Are you okay, Car? You’ve been unusually quiet. Tell us, what’s wrong?” Harriet queried.

“Nothing.”

“No, you can’t tell us that and expect us to believe your lies, baby girl. Something is definitely eating you up and until you tell us about it, we are not going to let you rest.” Maeve proclaimed.

Carmen scoffed, shoving her hands inside the pocket of the pink Celine brand sweatshirt she was wearing.

An awful silence lingered in the air for a few minutes until Carmen finally decided to talk to her best friends about her situation.

“Am I a bad person?” She blurted out, staring between the two girls.

Maeve and Harriet exchanged puzzled looks, neither of them expecting that kind of a question.

“Uh… Why would you ask that? Did anyone accuse you of being bad?” Harriet frowned.

“Who would dare to Füçking say that?” Maeve added, balling her fist as if ready to fight.

Carmen scoffed once again, rolling her eyes at her friend’s defense.

“Calm down, will ya? Just answer the d@mn question. Am I a bad person? Yes or no?”

“No, you are not.” Harriet and Maeve answered at the same time.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes, we are sure, Carmen. Why would you even let those words get into your head? How can someone say you are a bad person? You? Bad?” Harriet chuckled. “You are far from being that.”

“Listen to me, baby girl,” Maeve began. “You are one of the good people I know. And trust me, I am not saying this because you are my best friend. Don’t let negative thoughts get into your head, you hear me?”

Carmen sighed, leaning against the wall beside her locker.

“What if I am a bad person but pretending to be good in front of both of you?” She asked.

“Okay? So are you a bad person? Are you pretending to be good? Who are you, Carmen Brown?” Harriet raised a questioning brow, giving her a pointed look.

“I… Uh… I…” She stuttered.

“Oh, for Füçk sake!” Maeve groaned. “We have known you for years! ‘What if you are a bad person but pretending to be good’, my @$$! Do you think a person can pretend for too long? You don’t think so, do you?”

Carmen didn’t answer.

“Or is there something you aren’t telling us, Carmen?” Harriet queried. “What are you hiding?”

“What?” Carmen’s eyes widened at Harriet’s sudden question. “What am I hiding?” She repeated. “What kind of a question is that? What do you think I am hiding, huh?”

“You are nervous,” Maeve pointed out the obvious, eyeing her suspiciously. “Your reaction is giving you away, just in case you don’t know.”

Carmen let out a strained groan, pushing herself off the wall and opening up her locker.

“I am not hiding anything from you girls. And my reaction is nothing out of the ordinary. I was caught off guard by Harriet’s question. Why would she ask if I am hiding something from you both?”

“Well, she simply wants to know why you would think you are a bad person simply because someone said you were.” Maeve reasoned.

“I never said anyone called me a bad person. I was only asking the question because it feels like I am a bad person.” She shrugged.

Ever since her altercation with Camden last night and the way she spoke to her baby sister this morning, she has been feeling bad about herself.

Was she rude to them? Was she wrong?

Camden’s question had been replaying itself in her head and it hurt her so much to even think about it.

★“Sometimes I wonder what kind of a human being you are. Do you even care about your family at all? What matters to you in this world, Carmen? Huh? I am really curious to know.”★

Of course, she cares about her family. Especially Esmeralda but we h@të seeing her act so weak and bullied.

Which person in their right sense will have wealthy and capable parents but still get bullied by certain people in school? It doesn’t make sense, right?

However, Carmen’s train of thought was cut short by her friends’ next question.

“And what made you have such a feeling?” Maeve and Harriet asked.

Carmen blinked thrice, thinking of something to tell them but nothing came to her mind so she shrugged it off and walked away, leaving the girls behind.

Maeve and Harriet exchanged glances.

“She didn’t… Wait, she didn’t just walk away from us.” Harriet retorted.

“I think she did. Maybe we are boring her with the questions or she’s trying to avoid them.” Maeve reasoned.

“I think it is the latter. Let’s follow her.”

“Wait for us, Carmen!” Maeve called out as they ran after their friend.

“We aren’t done talking!” Harriet added.

“Yes?” The witch repeated, looking surprised. “You want to give up your soul for answers?”

Lilith nodded her head, giving the woman a look of determination.

“Yes.”

The woman cackled deeply, her whole body vibrating from it.

“Is it worth it?” She asked.

“Yes, it is.”

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

She smirked, rising up to her feet, and walked towards a cauldron positioned at the center of the compartment over an open flame.

A boiling sound and whizzing were coming out of the cauldron along with a streak of smoke, filling the room with an unfriendly smell.

She picked up a long stick beside the fire and dipped it inside the boiling concoction and started stirring it up slowly.

Lilith remained seated in her spot, watching the old witch do her thing.

She was kind of confused by the witch’s behavior. How can they be having a serious conversation here and she suddenly gets up and goes to stir a stupid concoction? Lilith felt disrespected and the urge to flare up at the woman was overwhelming her.

However, as much as Lilith wants to put the woman in her place for disrespecting her, she doesn’t want to screw her only chances of finding answers to her questions.

“Do you know why the future is hard for the eyes to see?” The witch asked from where she was, still mixing the concoction.

“I don’t. Enlighten me.” Lilith remarked.

“Because that is how life is supposed to be.” She stated, pulling out a small bottle of potion filled with black powder from a top shelf using her powers. The bottle lingered in the air until it got to her and she caught it in her hand and poured a little bit of the black powder into the concoction she was mixing.

Black smoke started coming out of the cauldron and the unfriendly and sickening smell got worse.

Lilith scrunched up her face in disgust, feeling irritated and nauseous.

What kind of concoction was this witch mixing? She wondered.

“What do you mean?” She asked through gritted teeth, trying her possible best to breathe.

“Life is a journey. A very, very long journey. You keep moving until you get to your destination. But guess what? You won’t know what lies ahead until you get there.”

“What are you trying to say?” Lilith questioned with a deep frown on her face.

“Don’t be faster than your shadow.” She advised.

“Excuse me?” The young demon huffed.

The witch grabbed a goblet and took a little quantity from the cauldron.

“Here, drink this.” She offered.

“I should drink that?” Lilith vigorously shook her head. “Never will I do that.”

The woman chuckled and approached her.

“You are here for answers, right? And you are willing to sacrifice your soul for it, isn’t that right?”

“Yeah… but…”

“Drink this, demon.” She urged.

“What’s in there? At least I should know that much. I can’t just drink something without knowing what it contains.”

“It’s a concoction I mixed. What? Do you think it’s poisoned?”

“Well, witches are known for poison. Sorry but not sorry. The truth hurts, anyway.”

The woman smiled.

“Yeah, right. Witches are known for poison just as demons are known for hell and darkness. Worshippers of the devil.”

Lilith smirked.

“I’ve never for once denied my originality. I am proud of what I am, who I am, and who I worship.” She said.

“I love that, demon.” She sat back down at the same spot she stood up from. “Here, drink this. It is no poison this time around, trust me.”

“I trust no one.”

“If you trust no one, why then are you here for answers?” The witch asked, tilting her head to the side. “I could lie to you if I want to.”

“You wouldn’t. I know you won’t.”

“You know what?” The old witch turned the goblet into ashes and dusted off imaginary dirt from her palms. “I’m sorry, but I can’t give you the answers that you seek.”

“What? Why? Is it because I refused to drink that…that concoction? Fine. I will drink it if that’s what it takes.”

“I can’t take the soul of the princess of this world. That’s a taboo.”

“Why are you saying this now? Is it because I said I trust no one? Minutes ago you were ready to give me the answers that I seek.”

“Was that what I said? Because what I remember saying is that you shouldn’t be faster than your shadow and that life is meant to be a mystery.”

“I don’t understand. So you are not going to tell me anything now? Did you deceive me? Did you lie to me?”

“Lilith,” The witch called out softly. “The answers you find will be your doom. You do not want that, truth me.”

“I want it. This is my life we are talking about. I need answers.” She groaned.

“Don’t worry, you shall find the answer that you seek. Very soon.”

“What?” Lilith glared. “You know, I regret coming here. Füçk you!” She stormed out of the hut, transforming into her demon self, and flew away.

The old witch smiled wryly and muttered her breath,

“Your fate is about to begin…”
