CHAPTER 53

Earlier today, Mirabella received a message from Marco, urging her to meet him one last time. He mentioned it was something significant. She mustered the courage to inform Vincenzo, who surprisingly didn’t object to her seeing Marco.

“I trust you, baby girl,” he said while brushing his teeth.

“Are you sure about that?” She inquired, and he nodded.

“Yeah, I trust you,” he responded, and she softly chuckled.

“You’ve really changed so much, and…I’m glad about that,” she murmured, and he smiled.

He drew her closer, gently lifted her chin, and planted a soft kiss on her lips. “I think it’s called character development, happens to people,” he muttered and nibbled her earlobe.

“People who are willing to change. Not everyone experiences that,” she replied, sharing a warm hug.

Little Hailey joined them in the bathroom, and Vincenzo lifted her up.

She giggled as Mirabella kissed her leg. “Mummy,” she called as they left the bathroom.

“What, honey?” Mirabella asked, drying her hair with a towel. She turned to Hailey, who seemed to have something important to say.

“I was just wondering when you’re gonna get me a brother,” she mumbled, and Vincenzo nodded, facing Mirabella.

“That’s a good question, sweetie. Mommy, when are we expecting a baby boy?” Vincenzo asked, and Mirabella glared at him.

“Sweetie, Momma has stuff to do right now. We can’t have a new baby yet,” she replied, sitting on the bed. “Are you feeling lonely?” She asked, and Hailey nodded.

“Awww. I’m so sorry, honey,” Mirabella said, kissing her hands.

“It’s gonna be okay, once I have someone to bully around,” Hailey said, and Vincenzo laughed.

“Wait, what? Bully around?” He asked, and she nodded.

“Yeah.”

“No!” Mirabella cleared her throat and held her cheek. “Listen, you’re supposed to protect your younger ones and not bully them.”

“Why not? Cherry puts Daniel’s head in a toilet and even sometimes gives him leftovers,” Hailey said and looked around. She leaned closer and whispered, “Actually, it’s dog leftovers,” chuckling.

“That’s very bad,” Mirabella tried explaining, but Hailey wasn’t paying slight attention.

“I never knew you’d have friends,” Vincenzo said, getting off the bed. He moved to the fridge and grabbed some milk.

“Every normal kid is supposed to have friends,” Mirabella remarked, standing up.

“Hmm.”

“Hmmm? Vee, what is it!” Mirabella further asked, noticing the frown on his face.

“She’s not just too little to be hanging out with people!” He said, and Mirabella gave him a slight look.

“With people? She’s hanging out with friends, and I think that’s what a five-year-old girl should be doing, not shooting a gun!!” She half-yelled, and Vincenzo laughed and almost immediately frowned.

“Are you trying to say I’m a bad father?” He asked with raised brows.

“Seriously?”

“Mum! Dad!” Hailey yelled, and they both turned. “What is wrong with you all?”

“Honey, it’s nothing,” Vincenzo quickly replied, and she scoffed.

“Then keep it down,” she muttered, walking out of the room.

“What was that all about, huh?” Mirabella asked, hands on her waist.

“I don’t know, what was that all about!?” He raised his voice, and Mirabella chuckled.

“I’m done with this conversation.” That was the last word she said as she went to her changing room.

She wore a simple gown that ended at her knees, put on her heels, and when she turned, she gasped, seeing how Vincenzo was staring at her.

“So you’re wearing that?” He asked, pointing at the dress.

“Yes…” She replied, checking out the dress. “You don’t like it?” She raised her brows.

“You’re going to meet your ex, and you’re putting on that? I can even see your thighs, and…”

“Stop! Please stop!” She rolled her eyes.

“Stop what? Please, Bella, go change. I’m not feeling insecure, but that dress is pretty short,” he said and shut the dressing room door.

She exhaled softly, going to change her dress. She wore a black long gown and tied a Gucci scarf.

She forcefully opened the door and stood at the door with a frown. “Better now? I look like a complete nun!” She hissed, grabbing her bag.

“Don’t stay long,” Vincenzo said, and she gave him a middle finger.

“Go to hell, Salvatore Vincenzo!”

At the most expensive hotel, Marco sat on the rooftop, candles and roses on the ground.

He sipped the red wine and smiled, just as the workers escorted Mirabella in.

He was indeed delighted she accepted his invitation, and for some reason, she looked so much more beautiful and fairer.

“Thanks for coming,” Marco said, pulling the chair as Mirabella sat on it.

“Don’t be so happy, I won’t stay long,” she replied, and he smirked, sitting on his.

“You look so pretty,” he complimented, and she rolled her eyes.

“Cut the crap.”

“Have some,” he muttered, pouring a glass of wine for her.

She gracefully took the glass of wine and gulped it down. Her eyes fixed on Marco.

“I’m sorry,” he began, and Mirabella dropped her glass of wine.

“Yeah, you should be.”

“I don’t have access to your father’s properties, I hope you know that. In fact, Isabella does not have access to the D’Angelos properties!” He spoke, and Mirabella narrowed her eyebrows.

“What do you mean? Who has it, then?” She asked, and he shrugged.

“No, no! It’s not possible,” she laughed, and he nodded.

“He has every detail, every company, estate. Vincenzo has it under his palm, but… the story didn’t end there,” he smiled.

“You see, what I find interesting in Vincenzo is that he went a long way just to get the D’Angelos properties, and he…” He paused and chuckled.

“The properties are still under your name! Interesting, isn’t it?” He shook his head.

“He’s a good man, I like him,” he sipped his drink.

“He’s not a good man to others, he’s only good to me,” she replied, and he nodded.

“Yeah, that’s true. He’s a really bad person. He better not mess with my things, or else… I’m going to send him back to you in pieces!” He sneered.

“I can’t wait,” she smirked devilishly.

“Isabella is dead,” Mirabella said, looking at him.

“I know, I was there. Hailey is a brave child. I wish I had a daughter,” he said, and Mirabella clenched her fists.

“Snow is your daughter; you left her for years!” she yelled, and he shrugged.

“I left my wife when she was about to have a child, which she eventually lost just to get a job at your father’s house. What do you call that?”

“Stupidity!” Mirabella answered.

“No, you’re wrong. It’s called choosing business over family.”

“Over your own blood? Are you human?” She asked, and he broke a glass cup in his hand.

He cut himself, and blood dropped on the ground. “I guess I’m human,” he replied.

“The real reason I called you was to tell you about your step-sister’s kids. Daniel was adopted by a rich family, but Snow… she’s in England, and she blames you for her mother’s problems,” he explained.

“I don’t care what she believes. She’s your daughter, and you should be responsible for her. I’m just her step-aunt, and if she keeps believing lies, she might end up like her mother,” Mirabella said without remorse.

“I’m trying to get my life together. I can’t take care of her anymore,” he said, and Mirabella glared at him.

“Why? Do you want her to have a terrible life? To end up like her mom, addicted to drugs?” She yelled and slapped Marco’s face.

“You can’t save everyone, Mirabella. Only she can save herself,” he muttered, and Mirabella grabbed his shirt.

“Do you really want to hurt the D’angelos so badly? Why do you h@të us so much?”

“I believe Snow is more of Marco Lambert than a D’angelo. I didn’t destroy your family, Mirabella,” he said, and Mirabella slowly let go.

“It’s just so sad! She’s still a little girl,” she said, tears filling her eyes.

“You can’t save everyone. I’m leaving Italy, hoping to start a new family with my wife, Angela.”

“I wish you luck. I hope you get what you deserve,” she muttered and turned to leave, but Marco pulled her back.

He held her waist, gazing into her eyes. “No goodbye kiss?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper as he kissed her forcefully.

Mirabella tried to push him away, but he was too strong. He let go of the kiss, and a slap followed.

“Goodbye,” he said as she walked away.

At the entrance, she met Angela, who clung to her bag. Mirabella examined her, and when their eyes met, they locked their gaze.

They stared at each other closely, and Mirabella remembered old memories.

Angela coming to their house, Marco mistreating her and pushing her away. At times, he would use her to gain favor with their father’s visitors.

“He doesn’t deserve you,” Mirabella said, and Angela wiped tears from her eyes.

“I don’t have a choice, do I?” Angela questioned, and Mirabella approached her

“If you want to stay healthy, leave this toxic relationship. Start a new life. No one deserves your tears,” she muttered, and when Mirabella saw that Marco was coming down, she quickly left Angela.

She angrily entered the car, exhaled, and started pounding the wheels.

She yelled loudly and broke into tears.

“Fuçk!” she cursed, cleaning her face.

“But why did marry die?” Hailey asked after Vincenzo read a story to her.

“That’s how this world is, honey. Sometimes, it’s best not to trust anyone at all,” he said, and she nodded slowly.

“But you trust Mama, right?” She asked, and Vincenzo nodded, lying beside her.

“She earned my trust.”

“A classmate of mine always says my mummy comes from a bad family. Is that true?” Mirabella asked, facing Vincenzo.

“Yes, honey, I came from a bad family,” Mirabella replied, getting into her room. “And I’m sorry if someone is bullying you for that,” she said, and Vincenzo noticed she wasn’t feeling good.

“Honey, goodnight. Momma’s stressed out,” Vincenzo said and held Mirabella’s hand.

“Let’s go in.” He kissed her hair and dragged Mirabella back to their room.

“What is it?” Vincenzo said, holding her cheek.

“I’m that bad? Is it my fault Isabella never got a good life? Her daughter is struggling. Is it my fault?” She asked, breaking into tears.

“No, no. You are not responsible for anyone’s misfortune. They choose their life, and they lived it,” he said, and she nodded.

You can’t help everyone; life is a self-teacher,” he said and pulled her into a hug.

She began crying while Vincenzo hugged her tightly. She screamed, letting everything out, and fell into his arms as Vincenzo laid her beside him.

He covered her with a duvet, his eyes fixed on her. “You shouldn’t get yourself stressed again or blame yourself for Isabella or what happened in your family,” he said, kissing her forehead.

“You did your best; you failed at some point, you passed through pain, just like everyone else. And if you choose to be good, it’s your decision, just like everyone else… The difference between you and Isabella is choice,” he muttered, and she exhaled.

“What would I have done without you?” She murmured, hugging him.

“I’m glad we have each other.”

“Thank you for making me feel good; you are the best.”

“Same as you. You look like you had pretty much alcohol. Don’t do that again; set a good example for baby Hailey.”

“And when did you become this strict, good father?” She chuckled softly.

“From the beginning, honey,” he replied, placing a kiss on her neck.

“I feel so uncomfortable, like I’m running a temperature or something.”

“It’s okay; we will see the doctor tomorrow morning,” Vincenzo assured her, and she shut her eyes.

“Goodnight. I love you so much.”

“I love you more than mere words can tell. You are my sweet angel. Goodnight,” he mumbled and pulled her closer.

He smiled, staring at her face.

When he noticed she was fully asleep, he climbed down the bed, removed her heels, and undressed her.

He used face wipes to clean her face, applied her night face cream, and massaged her feet.

He made sure she was comfortable before going to lay down and sleep.
