CHAPTER 39❣40

~★••••••★~
{ CHANGE OF PLANS }

FACT: SUCCUBUS ARE MIND READERS.
******

Fear.

It is a feeling or emotion you can’t get away from. It overwhelms you, controls you, and makes you vulnerable.

It is a feeling that makes you feel paralyzed. You want to run but your legs are numb and refuse to operate with your body. You want to scream but your lungs are constricted and your voice is gone.

Fear is a spirit that lurks around you, waiting for the perfect moment to strike and devour you. It is a spirit that works with darkness and your mindset.

Lilith came along with that feeling… fear. And she knew for sure that it was hovering over every human gathered in the hall and subduing them.

She could taste, smell, see, and hear their fears. It tasted salty, sweet, and sour. It smells of metal and blood. The anxiety and nervousness were like handwriting boldly written on their foreheads. And their frantic heartbeats, thumping hard against their ribcage were loud enough in the demon’s ears.

Who said demons had no power over humans? Because whoever said that…lied!

The silence grew longer and the tension grew thicker. Surprise and confusion were an understatement. If there was another word for fear, it would be the better adjective to describe the situation at hand.

Lilith’s smirk grew wider and her eyes became darker. The humans were saying nothing but she was hearing a lot from them and amidst their inner turmoil, she was able to identify Esmeralda’s bullies/murderers. They stood in the corners, looking just as bewildered as everyone else in the room.

Everyone had one thing to say in their heads like; ‘Esmeralda is alive’ ‘What’s going on?’ ‘I thought Esmeralda was dead!’ ‘Who is this girl?’ etc. However, the seven sets of students had different things going on in their heads; ‘How is she alive?’ ‘She is supposed to be dead.’ ‘This can’t be real.’ ‘She definitely fell from the rooftop.’ ‘How did she survive?’ ‘Oh, no. We are in trouble.’

Mrs.Brown appeared by the door, ignoring the state of the room, and said, “Mrs.Chester, a word.”

Mrs.Chester jerked back to reality, blinking her eyes several times in both dismay and astonishment.

She immediately dropped down from the podium and rushed out of the room.

“Ma…Ma’am…” She stammered, bowing her head a little bit.

“Your office. Right now.” Mrs.Brown ordered, walking away while the principal hurriedly followed her from behind without hesitation.

Mrs. Brown’s interruption pulled the students out of their trance and they all started running out of the hall at the same time as if there was a zombie apocalypse. Panic and terror circulated in the once-silent environment as their footsteps and screams grew louder.

A dead girl coming back to life? That only happens in movies or novels. But never in the real world. But then again, nothing is impossible.

Within seconds, the auditorium was empty and it became silent again. Nevertheless, the seven sets of students remained standing at the very spot they’d been since they saw Lilith.

Lilith smiled when she saw them trying to get away from the spot but couldn’t. Her powers are getting stronger each passing day that even the weak human body she was harboring can’t resist.

“Well, well, well,” She gushed, approaching them slowly and steadily, taking her precious time and purposefully delaying them. “You must be Beverly.” She eventually reached them and stood still in front of them.

“You are supposed… to be dead.” Beverly murmured after gathering enough courage and pushing a little bit of her fear aside. “You fell from the rooftop. You were rumored to be dead. You are dead, Esmeralda!”

“Am I?” Lilith retorted, amusement lingering in her voice and excitement gleaming in her eyes. “Because if I’m truly dead… How then am I here?”

Nobody could answer. Not a single person had an answer to that simple and uncomplicated question. It’s not like they didn’t have an answer, they just didn’t want to believe it.

Beverly’s face was as hard as a rock and her body trembled from both anger and fear. “What are you? Who are you? How are you alive? How did you survive the fall? It makes no sense. I…I pushed you myself. You are supposed to be dead!”

“But I’m not. The heavens must be on my side, I guess.” Lilith answered, not even believing her own words. The heavens on her side? She wish! She was a demon and had no business with the heavens.

“That’s a lie. The heavens are on my side and not yours. You are dead. You are_”

“She is obviously not dead, Beverly!” Brent yelled, cutting his girlfriend off. “Is it possible for us to communicate with a ghost, huh?”

The truth and reality slapped Beverly hard on the face and she lost her senses almost immediately.

“You Bîtch! Did you start the rumor? Was it your intention to fool me and make it seem like you are dead? How dare you make a mockery of me?” Beverly bellowed.

“First off, I started no rumor. But I must commend whoever started it. They made me have the upper hand.” She gave them a sinister smile. “Are you scared?”

“You don’t scare me, Esmeralda. Listen, you might be from a wealthy family but you are still way, way beneath me. I will crush you and_”

Lilith squashed the girl’s face hard, cutting her mid-sentence. “You will crush me? You seem to be missing something here, dear Beverly. Look at me closely,” She requested, leaning her own face closer to Beverly’s. “do I look like the Esmeralda you knew before?”

Beverly struggled to pull her face out of Lilith’s strong grip but it was impossible. She could barely breathe or think straight.

“Let her go!” Brent yelled, grabbing Lilith’s attention. “Are you crazy? What gives you the courage to talk to Beverly in that manner, Esme? Is it because you are Mr.Brown’s daughter, you think you can act anyhow?” He growled.

“And you, Brent, right?” She tilted her head to the side, eyeing him from head to toe but not releasing Beverly…yet. “The boyfriend of this Bîtch here,” She motioned to the girl under her mercy. “Though you aren’t a saint but you weren’t the one who pushed me so tell me, why do you want to get yourself involved? Is it love? Or foolishness?”

He was frightened and uncertain of his choices. Should he walk away and save himself? Should he be the amazingly good-looking and loving boyfriend and stand by his helpless girlfriend? Lilith heard the voices in his head, contemplating what to do or whatnot. But humans are stupid and always end up doing the wrong thing that they think is ‘right.’ How foolish.

“Stay away from Beverly!” He sputtered, trying to move but his feet were surprisingly glued to the ground and no matter how hard he tried to take a step, he couldn’t. What force was holding him back? He wondered.

“Don’t tell me what to do.” Lilith deadpanned, giving him a death glare. “I choose to do what I want with or without your consent. Be careful of the words you choose, Brent. It could be your last.” She warned him, venomously.

Her voice held no fear whatsoever. Indeed, she wasn’t the Esmeralda they once knew. There was something different about this girl. It was as if she was controlled by something or someone which by the way, makes absolutely no sense.

“Now listen to me carefully,” Lilith began. “I am Esmeralda Brown…alive and not dead. I am here for only one purpose and that is to make each and every one of you pay for what you did to Esmera…me. Step by step, that is how I’m going to hurt you all. What you did to me, I will return the favor a hundredfold. I will show you the difference between your status and mine. Power, money, fame, authority, and control are all mine. Your mother’s school,” Her gaze rested upon only Beverly now “shall be your destruction. Your nightmare shall be your reality. Your heavens shall become hell. The whole world will know your secrets that even your mother and father shall deny you. By the time I am done with you and your cohorts, death shall be your only option and the devil will reject and deny you when you go to hell. Boo!” She breathed air into Beverly’s face and the girl started coughing uncontrollably. “I am your nemesis, Beverly. Your fate has just begun.” She let go of the student’s face and stormed out of the auditorium.

Beverly dropped to the ground, breathing heavily while still coughing. Finally, Brent and the others were able to leave the spot their feet were glued to and rushed towards their friend.

“Are…you…okay?” Ivy stuttered frightfully.

“No!” Beverly croaked out, tears rolling down her face. “I’m…not okay.” With that said, she lost consciousness.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Mrs.Chester knelt down before Mrs.Brown, crying her eyes out whilst pleading for mercy. But all of her pleas fell on deaf ears.

“Do you know what you did, principal? You told the press that my daughter committed suicide. You tried to convince everyone that she jumped off the rooftop herself. How dare you!?” She roared.

“I thought that was exactly what happened!” The woman lied. “It was the rumor going around the school. I thought it was true.”

“You thought? Is this how you run your school, Mrs.Chester? You hear false news going around and instead of you to find out the truth, you settle for the false news. Really? Did you even show up at the hospital to check up on my daughter? Did you even care?”

“Of course, I did. I was worried about her and…and…”

“And what? And went to the press to spread lies and then gathered your students to do one minute of silence for a girl who was obviously alive and well.” Mrs.Brown sneered, boiling in anger. “Do you know what I had planned to do to you and your school? I was going to ruin you, Mrs.Chester. I made you who you are today so I can as well, break you.”

The principal bowed her head almost kissing the ground. “Please have mercy on me, Mrs.Brown. Forgive me for my stupidity. I beg of you.”

Mrs.Brown stayed quiet for a moment, staring at the woman who treated her precious daughter like she was nothing.

“Camden, Carmen, and Esmeralda are my children.” She paused. “They mean the whole world to me. Especially Esmeralda. Not because she is special than her siblings but because she is my last child. The baby of the house. I can do anything, absolutely anything for them. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t correct them or put them on the right path if need be.” She rose to her feet and went to the window. “I heard something about your daughter…”

Mrs. Chester’s eyes widened and her face turned pale but she didn’t look up or say anything.

“Beverly, isn’t that the name of your daughter?”

The principal thought of saying no and denying her child but it would be stupid for her to do so because Mrs.Brown obviously already knows the truth.

“Are you deaf? I asked you a question, didn’t I?”

“Ye…Yes. My daughter’s name is Beverly, ma’am.” She replied in a shaky voice.

“Your daughter bullied my child and I’m sure you know about that so don’t you dare act oblivious about it. She pushed my daughter to her death!” Mrs.Brown wasn’t sure of this but she doesn’t want to give Mrs.Chester the impression that her daughter doesn’t remember what happened the day of her fall.

‘They know the truth…does this mean, Beverly would be arrested for attempted murder? Oh, God. This could wreck the reputation and image of my school that I’ve built for years.’ Mrs.Chester thought to herself, biting her lower lip.

“Your daughter tried to murder my daughter. It would cost me nothing to make her pay for it dearly, according to the law of this country. However, my precious daughter who miraculously survived the fall has something else in mind. She wants revenge against your daughter.”

“Re…revenge?” Mrs.Chester repeated, slowly looking up at the woman’s face. “Esmeralda wants revenge?”

“You heard me correctly. And I’m going to grant her her wish.” She smiled, walked away from the window, and went to stand before the principal who remained kneeling. “You’ve overlooked your daughter’s crime. You kept quiet when she went about bullying students. Bullying my daughter. So listen carefully, you are going to continue keeping quiet while my daughter takes her revenge against yours. You won’t do anything, correct anything, or say anything. Additionally, you are going to go back to the press and take back your words. Tell them you heard false news and that Esmeralda was pushed by someone but you do not know who the culprit is. Do I make myself clear?”

“Ye…Yes, ma’am.” The principal answered hesitantly.

“Madam.” Mrs.Brown corrected. “You will refer to me as madam henceforth, principal. You are not in my caliber, you are way, way, way beneath me. I made you who you are. The life you live right now is all thanks to my family and I. Don’t be an ingrate. I can take everything from you including this school you’ve used your time, sweat, and blood to build and run. My nonchalant attitude towards you gave you the audacity to condescend me and I won’t make the same mistake twice again. While my daughter handles yours. I’ll keep a close eye on you. Any slight mistake from you and I swear…you will regret it.” Mrs.Brown grabbed her Louis Vuitton handbag from the couch and walked towards the door, it was opened externally by Mrs.Brown’s personal guard who had followed her to drop Esmeralda at school. “Have a wonderful day, Mrs.Chester.” She gave out a fake smile and walked away.

As soon as Mrs.Brown was gone, Mrs.Cheser released a deep breath and stood up to her feet on wobbly legs.

“Beverly has ruined me. Füçk.” She cried out, plopping down to the very couch her guest had earlier sat down on. “It is over for me. Kindhearted Mrs.Brown is gone, she won’t help me or the school again. God, I’ve made the wrong person an enemy. What do I do now?”

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Esmeralda was walking down the hallway when she bumped into Ixora.

“Queen Ixora,” She greeted calmly in a curtsy manner.

Ixora was taken aback by this, she wrinkled her brows in confusion, not knowing how to respond to Lilith’s polite greeting.

“How are you, my queen?” Esmeralda asked with a charming smile on her face. She has heard so much about Ixora. The woman might be an enemy to the owner of the demon’s body she was inhabiting and to her mother, Queen Dahlia, as well. But Esmeralda on the other hand doesn’t want to keep a lot of enemies around. Soon, everyone will find out about a human girl occupying the body of their demon princess, and before that happens, she wants to create allies who will defend and fight for her when that time comes.

“What is the meaning of this?” Ixora glared, pinching her brows together in a deeper confusion. “Why are you suddenly being nice to me, Lilith? What are your intentions?”

“My intentions?” Esmeralda chuckled nervously, hoping that this display of hers doesn’t get her into deep Sh|t. “I have no motive, my queen.”

“Stop it, Lilith!” The queen snapped. “Enough. This act of yours is becoming irritating now. You are not this nice, Lilith. I know you like the back of my palms. What do you want? Answers to your questions? You want me to uncover the secrets your parents are concealing from you? Tell me, what do you want?”

‘Secrets? Answers? What is she talking about?’ Esmeralda thought to herself.

“Lilith,” Ixora called out, taking a step closer. “I don’t like you and I know the feeling is mutual. You want answers, don’t you? You can get those answers without acting like a nice demon because it doesn’t suit you, trust me.”

‘She keeps talking about answers. What does she mean? I can’t ask her because if I do, she will know I’m not Lilith. Wait, does this mean that the original owner of this body has been looking for answers? Answers to what, by the way?’ She asked internally, confusion written clearly on her face.

“How can I get the answers?” Esmeralda asked, trying to play along.

Ixora smirked. “Go to the old witch and ask the question which troubles you. I’m sure she will have a lot to tell you.”

“The old witch…” Esmeralda repeated. “Where does she stay?”

“What kind of a question is that? Everyone knows where to find the old witch.” Ixora responded. “Anyway, I’m sure her words will help you find the truth that you seek.” She said, attempting to walk away when Esmeralda asked,

“Why are you helping me out?”

“Excuse me?” The queen scowled.

“You said you h@të me. So why are you helping me now to find the answers that trouble me?”

“I already gave you an answer, Lilith. But if you want me to repeat myself… I will.” She leaned towards the girl and whispered to her ears for only her to hear. “I want you to bring doom to this world, Lilith. Your downfall will ruin your mother and father and that’s what I’ve always hoped and wished for.”

“What?” Esmeralda’s face dropped and her mouth partly opened. “What do you mean by that? How will I bring doom to this world? Why do you want to ruin my mother and the king?”

“You sound naive and that’s so unlike you.” Ixora eyed her from head to toe as if trying to figure her out. “Anyway, as I’ve said before, the old witch will give you the answers that you seek.” She walked away afterward.

Esmeralda watched the woman go, not knowing what to do or say. Things just got from bad to worse. How was she going to go about all this she had just found out?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

“My princess,” Hermes bowed his head. “You requested my presence, what can I do for you?”

Esmeralda shot up from the queen-sized bed made of thorns and advanced closer to the guard. “I need your assistance,”

A look of puzzlement crossed his face. “My…my assistance? What is it, my princess?”

There was no other person she could approach to discuss this topic. She doesn’t trust Lilith’s three best friends, not because they are bad people but because they owe their loyalty to their demon friend and not her. How would they treat her if they found out the truth that a human was living in their friend’s body? They might not even believe that she’s a human. They might think she’s a witch who possessed Lilith and took over her body. That theory makes sense but it’s a lie.

Esmeralda cleared her throat and looked into Hermes’s eyes, gripping the fabric of her yellow dress. “Help me find the old witch.”

“Wha…what?”

“I said help me find the old which. You can do that, right?” He ÇOçked a brow at him.

“Why do you want to look for her, my princess? What answers are you looking for?” He gave her a quizzical look.

‘Can I trust him? Well, maybe. There’s nobody else I can trust in this world anyway. What’s the worst that can even happen if I tell him everything?’ Esmeralda said in her head, sizing the guard up with her eyes.

“My princess?” He called out when he saw that she wasn’t saying anything.

“I’m not your princess,” She dropped the bomb. “I’m not a demon nor from this world, Hermes.” She hesitated. “I’m a human.”

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Beverly groaned, peeling her eyes open while cupping her forehead as she could feel her head hurting like there was somebody in her head banging it with a hammer.

“Beverly,” A stern voice grabbed her attention. It was her mother who was sitting beside the school clinic bed that she was lying down on. “You’re finally awake.”

“I feel…dead.” The girl hissed, sitting upright. “I had a very terrible nightmare. Esmeralda came to school. She was alive and healthy. Gosh. I h@të that dream.”

“It wasn’t a dream, dear child.” Mrs.Chester noted. “Esmeralda isn’t dead. And as we speak, she’s in class, attending lecture with fellow students.”

Beverly’s face dropped and her body began to quiver. “Esme…Esme is alive? How…how is this possible? Mother, you have to do something about this. If the world finds out about what I’ve done, I will be arrested. I don’t want to go to jail, mother.” She uttered.

“I’m sorry, kid, but change of plans. There’s nothing I can do to help you.” Mrs.Chester sighed. “Esmeralda wants to have her revenge against you and your friends.”

“What? You can’t let her do that, right? You won’t let her do that. Right?”

“Are you afraid of her?” The principal furrowed her brows.

“I…” She remembered how Esmeralda squashed her face and threatened to ruin all of them. She shook her head when she felt goosebumps creeping up her arms. “She’s different. I don’t know. But she is not the naive, stupid, introverted, shy, and wallflower girl we knew before, mother. I saw the boldness and fury in her eyes. I heard the cruelty and ruthlessness in her voice. It’s as if she’s possessed by something, mother.” Beverly nervously shook her head. “She has come for me and to be honest, I’m scared. You have to help me out here, Mother.”

“My hands are tied,” Mrs.Chester remarked, shrugging her shoulders. “I have my own share of the problem you’ve caused, Beverly. You sort out your issue and I sort mine. I can’t help you right now.”

“What do you mean? Are you going to abandon your own daughter?” Beverly sniffled, tears trailing down her face.

“If I try to help you, I will lose this school. Is that what you want, huh? I’m sure not. So you take wh@tëver Esmeralda does to you like a good girl. We can’t fight the Browns family, dear. We are nothing compared to them.” The woman rose to her feet. “Go to class now and keep out of trouble. Well, unless Esme comes to find you. However, I suggest you plead for her forgiveness. Who knows? She might_”

“Never! I will not ask that Bîtch for forgiveness. I will fight back. I will kill her over again and I swear I will do it right this time.” She snarled, balling her fist.
