Chapter three
Baek-Hyun came over to where his friends were chatting and having their drinks.
“Guess who finally came out, what were you doing in your room?”. Chan-yeol asked and then sniffed him.” did you have a shower?”.
“What were you doing in your room?” Byung-ho asked.
“I was busy”. Baek-Hyun replied as he took a sip from his drink.
” Busy with what actually?”. Chan-yeol asked staring at him skeptically.
“None of your business”. he said unlikely and took another sip from his drink and chan-yeol sniffed at him again.
” Why do you smell suspicious the smell on your shirt is different from your fragrance”. chan-yeol said and stared straight into his eyes.” were you with a woman in your room?”.
“Will you stop sniffing on me like a dog, wh@tëver I was doing in my room is none of your d@mn business”. he snapped at him, then his parents came over.
” Son, where have you been? We were worried”. Mrs. I-jun said as she embraced him to herself and then pulled away from each other.
“Am sorry Mom, I got caught up with an old-time friend”. he said.
” Now that you are here is time to address the guest”. Mr.Dae-jung said.
“Okay, Dad”.
Su-ho and her husband were chatting when Ji-ho came over looking all glamorous.
” Hey,” she said smiling and they turned to her quickly.
“ji-ho”. su-ho called and hugged her firmly and then they pulled away from each other.” what happened? We were worried”.
“Am sorry I took so long”.
” Are you okay?”Dae-Seong asked.
“yes I am fine,” she said, and su-ho stared knowingly at her.
“What happened to you? You look all excited and glamorous, did you have an encounter with an angel”.
“Don’t be silly, su-ho, I am just having fun”.
“Really? Some hours back, you were eager to go back home because the party seemed boring to you and now you are all looking excited and full of life”. she said and ji-ho smiled.
” she is right, I think this face suits you more”.Dae-Seong said.
“Exactly! Whoever made my friend look like this, should be thanked”. Su-ho said and they chuckled, then a voice came over the microphone, and everyone turned in that direction.
” Good Day ladies and gentlemen, I thank you all for honoring our invitation and we are pleased to have you all here”. Mr.Dae-Jung said smiling and continued. “as you all know, today happens to be my son’s birthday and also a housewarming party”. The crowd clapped and he continued.”Thank you, well, the moment we all have been waiting for is here, let me welcome my son on stage, please join me as I welcome to my son, Baek-hyun Dae-Jung!” he said to everyone cheers him up as he walked to the stage with his mother, they turn to the crowd smiling delightfully as the crowd continues clapping and cheering them up, the single ladies were blushing and melting in admiration toward Baek-hyun. Su-ho stared surprised at him and then turned her face to ji-ho and saw her smiling towards Baek-hyun.
“Is he t-the “. she asked confusedly and her husband turned to her.
” Are you okay?”. he asked.
“yeah, is just that….anyway never mind”. she said.
” Okay”. they turn back to the stage.
“Thank you, thank you”. Mr.Dae-jung said smiling at the crowd and it became calm.” thank you, but anyway that is not all, there is also a reason for this surprise party we throw for our son, we have another big announcement to make to everyone here”. he said and Baek-Hyun turns slightly at him confusedly and wonder what the announcement is all about.” please everyone let your glasses be filled with drinks”. he instructed the servers to fill everyone’s glasses and they did as they were instructed.”Good, thank you, now I am here to announce the engagement between my son Baek-Hyun and
Ha-Jun 하준(This name means Great Summer), President Dong-Geun (동근), daughter
(Dong-Geun can be formed by hanja, meaning east, and foundation, root)”. He said everyone cheered and raised their glasses, Baek-Hyun was stunned, including Chan-yeol, Byung-ho, Su-ho, and ji-ho.
“Oh my!” Su-ho exclaimed as she turned to see the sad and surprised look on ji-ho face.
“This is so not good”. Chan-yeol said surprisedly.
” Exactly!” Byung-ho said the crowd continued cheering and applauding, and then Ha-Jun walked majestically onto the stage with her parents, she looked elegant with her slim body, golden brown hair, pointed nose, and deep brown eyes, she was an epidemic of beauty. The cameras were busy taking pictures, Baek-Hyun looked out for the crowd and saw the sad look on Ji-ho’s face, at that moment all he wanted to do was to rush to her and hug her to himself. Ji-ho on the other hand, couldn’t believe how everything was just turning upside down, she felt heartbroken and started feeling guilty, and the atmosphere was suffocating her, she rushed out quickly and ignored Su-ho’s calling.
“Is she ok?”.Dae-Seong asked and Su-ho sighed sadly.
Ji-ho came out of the building walking along the busy road as different thoughts were running through her head and she burst into tears and started regretting her mistake, she was so lost and didn’t even notice what was going around her, suddenly she felt a familiar hand pull her away from the road to avoid been hit by a car, the hands encircled around her waist while her hands were resting on his chest, she suddenly felt safe in those arms.
” What do you think you are doing? You were almost knocked down by that car”. He said as fear could be noticed in his voice.” don’t ever scare me like that again”.He added and their eyes interlocked, he saw the sadness and pain in her eyes and he caressed her face gently ” Ji-ho, am sorry”.
“B-Baek-Hyun”. she called weakly and caressed his face.
” Am sorry, I have no idea of what happened in there”.he embraced her tight to himself.”Am sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you, am sorry” ” She sobbed and then suddenly remembered what happened at the party, she wiggled out of his embrace.
“I can’t do this, you have to go back, everyone will be worried about you” She sniffed
“I can’t Ji-ho, is you I want, I want to be with you” ” He tries to take her hand but she pushes back
“Please let’s end this here, I can’t do this anymore, am sorry”. she ran off.
“ji-ho! ji-ho!”. he tried calling her back, but she ignored him as she stopped a taxi, she entered and it drove off, Baek-Hyun felt loose and sad.
Back at the party, chan-yeol and Byung-ho wondered where Baek-hyun could have wandered off to, then they saw him enter the party angrily and walk up to his parents who were busy chatting with Ha-Jun’s parents.
” Dad, Mom, can I have a word with you privately”. he said and walked away, they followed him behind and stopped in the corridor.
“Is everything ok son?”.Mr.Dae-Jung asked and he turned to them angrily.
” How dare you two make such a decision without my consent”.
“How do you mean son, we did what was best for you,” Mr.Dae-jung said.
” You don’t know what is best for me, Dad, why will you two do a thing like that, listen I won’t be a part of this, and let me make this clear, I won’t marry her, not now or ever after”. He warned and walked away angrily, they tried calling him back, but he ignored them. his friends who stood far away from them and they followed him behind to his room. Baek-Hyun moved to his bar, picked a bottle of whiskey and poured it into a glass cup, and took a gulp of it.
“Try to take it easy”. Byung-ho said and Baek-Hyun sat down on his bed looking frustrated.
” Yeah, am sure everything will be fine “. Chan-yeol said.
” I can’t believe this has been their plan all these while, why would they do such a thing? Do things like this still exist in this 21st century”. he grunts angrily and takes another gulp of his drink.
“Don’t drink too much, it won’t solve anything”. Byung-ho said as he took the drink from him forcefully.
” Gosh!” he grunted and lay on the bed facing the ceiling.” at some point, I thought my life was going smoothly, and now…”. he sighed sadly, and then someone knocked on the door.
“Who is there?”. Byung-ho asked.
” Um, is Ha-Jun, I would like to speak to Baek-hyun”. she said politely with her angelic voice, they were surprised and Beak-Hyun rolled his head in disagreement.” is he there?”
“Er, sorry Ha-Jun, Baek-Hyun is kinda..don’t want to talk to you right now”. Chan-yeol said.
“Please I won’t take too much of your time, I just want to talk”.
“Sorry, Ha-Jun, can we do this some other time, I am really not in the mood for anything now, am sorry”. Baek-Hyun said.
” Okay then, some other time, goodnight”. She left and they let out a sigh.
