❗ Chapter Two ❗
Little Dora had successfully passed through nursery and kindergarten schools.
She was about to enter preparatory school.
Her mother wanted her to attend
one of the best preparatory schools.
This required big money and Mrs. Uwana had
very little money.
She did all she could to put by some money, but what she was able to save was not enough to meet her daughter’s educational needs.
Each morning she would leave home very early, as usual, to meet the train.
She would buy foodstuffs from the traders and resell it at the central market.
Yet all the money she made was not enough to give Dora the best education Mrs. Uwana
so much desired.
So one morning, a few weeks before Dora was to enter preparatory school, Mrs. Uwana went
to one of her friends, Auntie Vic, to borrow money.
Auntie Vic was a popular trader at Itam Market in Uyo. She had several stores and had plenty of money.
Mrs. Uwana travelled from Ekpene to Uyo to see Auntie Vic.
“Please, give me a loan to send my daughter to a very good preparatory
school ” Mrs. Uwana pleaded.
“I shall repay the loan in ten monthly equal
instalments*.” Mrs Uwana added.
“I can’t give you a loan. If all these years you’ve not been able to save enough money to
educate your only child, there’s no way you can repay the amount you’re asking for.” Auntie Vic said.
“Oh, please help me, I want my daughter to have the very best education.
I don’t want her to end up the way I did, toiling day and nightband having nothing worthwhile for my toil. . . Help me please,” Mrs Uwana begged.
“I say I can’t give you any loan,” countered
Auntie Vic.
“What I can do for you is this, I’ll show you
how you can make more money on your
own.” Auntie add in.
“Really?” Mrs. Uwana asked, going on her knees in front of Auntie Vic.
“Really? Please, Vic, please! Show me how I
can get more money,” Mrs. Uwana said.
“Come here early tomorrow morning and
I’ll take you to see a man who’ll help you to
get more money,” said Auntie Vic.
“Oh, thank you, Vic. Thank you very much.” Mrs Uwana appreciated.
She felt relieved. She to make more money on
her own! Ah! What great joy that would
be.
“There’s no need for you to thank me, after all, what are friends for? Come early tomorrow morning and I’ll take you along.” Auntie Vic said.
