Chapter Twelve
Fannie got out of Alfred arms to see Dora standing at the entrance starring at the two of them.
“What are you two doing?”Dora asked as Fannie pulled away from Alfred.
“It’s not what you think. I can explain Dora” Fannie said.
“Explain cause I will like to know what two people who just met today are doing hugging each other” Dora said
“It’s a common thing for people to hug each other. Haven’t you been hug by someone?” Alfred asked her and Fannie gave him a look which told him not to make matter worse.
“Have been hug by numerous men but not in the way you were doing with Fannie.” Dora replied.
“Then you better let me be the first to hug you the same way I was doing with Fannie”Alfred said moving towards her but Fannie pulled him back.
“John will kill you if he saw you doing that to her”Fannie said to Alfred.
“Let’s go talk somewhere” She said this to Dora who she pulled away before something else happen.
They got to her room and Fannie bolt the door before going back to Dora.
“Start spilling it Fannie. I know you are hiding something” Dora said and Fannie nodded even as she told Dora the whole thing. Well apart from her reason for leaving him.
“So you are saying Alfred and you were an item before?”Dora asked still shocked by the whole thing.
“Yes we were but it’s a long time ago” Fannie said.
“I doubt that. To you it might be but to him it clearly isn’t. That guy still wants you.
It’s like the billionaire romance I always read “Dora said excitedly.
“This is not something to joke about Dora” Fannie said.
“I know and that’s why I think you are in a deep situation. What will you do?” Dora asked.
“Make him leave. He only came here for the wedding and he already moved on. His daughter is a prove” Fannie said.
“I don’t think that guy has move on from you and his daughter likes you. You won’t be able to get him to stay away like you want” Dora said.
“I have to do something. I just can’t have him back into my life. “Fannie said looking agitated.
“Why? You never told me why you decided to leave him”Dora questioned.
“I can’t tell you that Dora. It’s a secret that I will have to take with me to my grave but what I can tell you is that I don’t deserve a man like Alfred. I will only be a burden to him”Fannie said.
“Why do you say so Fannie. Please enlighten me about it” Dora said wanting to understand Fannie a bit more.
“I dare not burden you with my problem. Your wedding will take place soon and you will be heading off on your honey moon with John. You don’t know how happy I am for you”Fannie said
“I am happy and excited about my upcoming marriage but am worried about you too. How will you deal with this situation?”Dora asked again.
“I will just have to stay away from Alfred” Fannie replied knowing it wouldn’t be an easy task.
There was a soft knock on the door and one of John relative told them to come downstairs that Chris had an announcement to make.
“Do you know what Chris wants to say?” Dora asked
“I have no idea”. Fannie lied. She knew what he was going to say but she hoped it wouldn’t be it. He wouldn’t really say it in front of everyone and at his brother party. She thought as she and Dora descended the stairs.
While Dora went to meet John. Fannie stood amongst the crowd while they all gathered around Chris who was going to make an announcement.
“Now that everyone is present. I can say what I want to say” Chris said as his eyes searched the crowd until they landed on her.
“I know that to some of you here might think that I have wasted a lot of time and to some you might think that it’s too soon but you can’t decide for the heart and like my little bro says. I should dive into it and so……” He paused as he moved towards Fannie and pulled her out of their midst.
“Have decided to dive into it” he said as he stared at Fannie while everyone cheered for them.
Her guess was right. She had first notice it a month ago when Chris behaviour changed.
She watched him kneel In front of her, holding both of her hand in his.
“I love you Fannie and I don’t think I will be complete without you in my life. I know that it might be something of a surprise to you but it’s been a while since the bond of friendship we have turned to love. I love you and If you give me a chance. I will make you the most happiest woman on earth”He said
?”Say yes Fannie”?
?”Give him a chance”?
“?You two will make a lovely couple “?
“?Don’t keep him waiting for long” ?
Fannie stared at everyone urging her to say yes except someone who stood away from the crowd watching her intently.
She knew what he want her reply to be but she couldn’t. Just like she had decided. She had to make Alfred leave. If she accepts Chris proposal then she will succeed in achieving that.
She knew it was wrong but she had no choice. She thought as she stared at Chris once again.
“I accept” Fannie said and while everyone cheered for their happiness.
Chris got up and pulled her close, kissing her for the first time.
She closed her eyes. Wishing with all heart that she would feel something but she didn’t.
While everyone gathered around them to congratulate them. She saw Alfred heading to the balcony. A sad expression on his face.
She knew she hurt him but there was no other way. “Am sorry Alfred. Am really sorry” she said to herself silently as her attention was once again claimed by the well wishers.
Alfred stood alone at the balcony sipping his wine while the party kept going. He had been hoping that she would say no but her saying yes made it clear to him that she didn’t want him in her life.
He should have known that she wouldn’t want him around. It’s been six years and she never made any attempt to come back to him and if he hadn’t come here for the wedding. He would never have found her back.
“It’s freezing out here” Dora said as she came to him.
“I didn’t notice”Alfred replied
“Feeling Down?”Dora asked and he stared at her strangely before replying.
“You should be celebrating with them in there not out here consoling me”Alfred said
“Consoling you? I doubt that is what am doing” she said
“Then why are you here?”
“I met Fannie some years ago and I can tell that she is a good person. She is someone who would put others ahead of herself. She is also someone who must have a reason for doing something” Dora said
“And what is your point?”Alfred asked
“If she accepts Chris proposal then she must have a reason for doing it. Just like she left you six years ago. There must be a reason for it. So instead of drowning yourself in alcohol. You should try to know what this reason of her is”Dora said as she turned to leave.
“Why are you doing this?”Alfred asked her.
“It’s because I want her to be happy. I simply want what is best for Fannie”Dora replied as she left him.

“Are you feeling okay?”Chris asked as he pulled Fannie close as they both take a walk along the garden wanting to be alone for a while.
“Yes”Fannie replied as she stopped to stare at him.
“Are you sure about this Chris?” She asked.
“Sure about what ?”Chris asked
“About wanting me. You know what happened to me. Are you sure you still want knowing my weakness?” Fannie asked and he pulled her into his arms.
“I don’t care about your weakness. All I want is you Fannie. Only you” Chris replied before kissing her.
