Chapter Twenty Four
“Is that you Fannie!”Alfred called again and She silently cursed herself for having made him realise that she is Fannie.
“Is it really you?”He asked again and when she still kept quiet.
He touched her face wanting to know if she is the one. She crouched in front of him while he gently caress her face. He would have gotten to know if only he didn’t touch her hair.
The excited look that had been on his face changed into one of anger as he let her go.
“You aren’t her”He stated as he got up. She tried to help him but he pushed her hand away.
“I don’t need your help”He rasped out loudly.
“You need my help. So just let me help you”Fannie said as she wrap her arm around him while she led him to his bed.
“What were you doing that made you fall?”Tiffany asked as she made her presence known to the blind Alfred.
“Playing!”He replied hotly.
“Am not in the mood for your jokes”Tiffany told him.
“Then you shouldn’t have asked a stupid question! Do you think I wanted to fall on purpose?”He yelled at his sister.
“Don’t Yell at me Alfred”Tiffany warned.
“Or else what? You would hit me?”He asked.
“You know I would never do such a thing!”She said.
“I don’t care! Just leave take this nurse and leave! I want to be alone”He stated.
“Fine then! Do what you want. Am tired of this attitude of yours” Tiffany replied as she began to leave the room.
“Am the one tired of you! Just because am blind doesn’t mean you can rule my life. Instead of trying to turn me into something you want, Why don’t you deal with your life first!”He yelled and that made Tiffany stare at him.
“That was a mean thing to say Alfred and you know it” Tiffany said before leaving the room.
“What did I say?”He muttered to himself thinking he was alone.
“That was a mean thing to say to her”Fannie echoed Tiffany words.
“Why are you still here?”He asked.
“Just watching how much of a jerk you are”Fannie replied
“Did you just insult me?” He asked.
“What did I say?” Fannie asked nonchalantly.
“You know what you said”He replied.
“I do and I only said that to make you see how your words hurt the people around you. If I were you I would apologise to Tiffany. Believe me when I say that you have been her number one priority “Fannie said and when he didn’t say anything. She added softly.
“I will be back with your dinner and meds but if you need anything before then. Call for me” with that said, she left the room feeling sad for Alfred who has turn out to be a bitter man.

She went back to his room with his dinner and medicine just like she had promised.
She found him standing by the window starring into the dark night.
Why would he keep on looking outside when he couldn’t see. She wondered as she silently stared at him.
“Are you done looking?”He asked startling her.
“How do you know that am here?”She asked as she put his tray of food on the table.
“I might have lost my sight but my hearing is still functioning well”He replied
“Well I brought you your dinner”She said as she went to him to help him get to his chair when he refused.
Fannie watched him find the chair easily and when he was seated on it. She silently praised him.
“What am I having?”He asked.
“Just some salads. They are veggies which would help in strengthening you”She answered.
“Must I be subjected to such food because am blind?”He asked.
“Yes. It’s necessary for you”Fannie replied.
“Until when will you keep being my nurse?”
“Until you’ve gotten rid of this arrogant behaviour of yours”
“Is Tiffany still angry?”He asked.
“More like hurt. You were harsh to her a while ago. Judging by your question. You still haven’t apologised to her”Fannie guessed.
“I haven’t”
“Why? You should learn to apologise if you know you’ve wronged someone”
“I don’t need your lecture. I just haven’t found the right time to call for her. Just tell me where the food is and let me eat” He said and she showed him where the food was placed.
While he ate, she watched how he ate without any difficulty. People who didn’t know him would never believe that he is blind.
“You said something a while ago?”She began asking the question that have been troubling her
“What?”He asked as he stopped eating to give her his attention.
“You called me Fannie. Who is she?”She asked wanting to know what she is to him.
“Fannie. She is no one”He replied after keeping quiet for awhile and unknown to him his answer hurt her.
“No one? But I heard from Tiffany that Fannie is someone you love” she lied wanting to know if he meant what he said.
“Love. Love isn’t something meant for me. I made it clear to her and she thinks the same too”He replied.
“How are you sure that she thinks the same?”Fannie asked.
“It’s been a month since I told her that and she has never come back to see me. That shows that she has moved on with her life and that’s exactly what I want”He stated.
“I don’t think so?” Fannie accused.
“Why don’t you? Can you read my mind or did Tiffany feed you off with more stories about my life with Fannie?”He asked.
“She doesn’t have to do that because I can Clearly see the look you have on your face”
“And what would that look be?”
“Sadness. You looked sad while talking about her but a while ago your face lit up with excitement when you thought I was Fannie” she told him.
“You thought wrong. I was only distracted for a while and the look you are seeing on my face now is one of happiness because am finally free of her'”He said as he pushed his food away.
“Your just saying that to……”
“Stop with this talk about Fannie. She is someone who had been a part of my life for a while and am glad that she choose to leave instead of staying with a blind fool like me. Am glad that she is gone from my life”He said cutting her off.
Not wanting to leave the conversation like that, she asked again “What will you do if she comes back?”Fannie asked.
“She won’t be coming back and if she do comes back. I will make sure she leave again. I mean it! So don’t you bring Fannie to see me!”He stated firmly and Fannie gave him his meds and left his room.
If she had come as Fannie, He would have done his best to make her leave. It’s a good thing that she made up another identity. It’s the only way she can stay by his side and help him.
