“What do you mean?” Fannie asked as she stared at Alfred.
“You heard me right?”He stated.
“Are you really going to act like this?” Tiffany asked this time.
“You two chose to do what you want. I will also do what I want and what I want right now is to go back home” he stated.
“Are you crazy Alfred! You’ve got a chance to see again and you want to let it all to waste due to your foolish stubbornness?”Tiffany yelled at him already fed up by his attitude.
“Don’t lecture me Tiffany. Just get me out of here” He replied and Tiffany wanted to say more but Fannie pulled her back gently whispering to her to let her speak to him alone.
Tiffany left the room leaving Fannie and Alfred alone.
“Did she leave?”Alfred asked.
“Yes she did and that’s all due to your foolish stubbornness” Fannie said to him.
“Did you just refer to me as foolish?”he asked.
“Yes. You really are foolish, infuriating and tiresome. Just what would you get by acting this way?”Fannie asked.
“Now you are going too far. You are just my employee”He said
“That’s true. I am your employee but that doesn’t mean I have to accept every foolish mistake of yours”She added this yelling at him.
“You are pushing my limit”He stated.
“That’s the same way you’ve been pushing Tiffany limit and also mine. You’ve gotten a chance to see again. So why refuse to get surgery?” She asked.
“You don’t have to know. Just get me out of here”
“I won’t do that”
“You really want to be fired right?” He asked.
“Fire me. I don’t care but I will make one thing clear to you. I won’t leave until I make sure that you’ve gotten your surgery”Fannie said determinedly.
“Get out! Get out!” He yelled at her.
“This is because of Fannie right? You don’t want this surgery because of her?” She asked.
“What do you know? Just shut and get out of here. You are fired.”
“Should I just call Fannie here. Should I go and look for her just so she could talk some sense into you”She asked.
“Don’t you dare. Don’t you dare bring Fannie here”He said
“Why? Are you scared that she will make fun of you?”Fannie asked taunting him.
“Fannie would never do such a thing”
“Then why do you refuse to see her? Why do you insist on pushing her away and exactly do you want to live as a blind man for the rest of your life?”
“You don’t have to know”
“I want to know. make me understand”She begged as she moved towards him to take his hand in hers.
“Fannie deserves someone better. I realised that not before I found that was blind”He began gently.
“When did you realise it then?”She asked.
“On the day of the accident. When the man that caused the accident called me it made me realise that my being with Fannie would only jeopardise her safety. She was in a comatose state because of my insistence on being with her. She ran away from me once. I should have given up and let her go then but my greediness made me force my way back into her life” Alfred began.
“Pushing her away is the best thing for us. If I have her in my life again I will keep on wondering if she will be put in danger once again and I don’t want that. I don’t want her living in fear and if I fail in protecting her I will live the rest of my life in regret. Not having the surgery and living the rest of my life as a blind man will keep her away from me”
“I know that she’s willing to stay with me in this condition but with my persistence to get her to stay away. She will stay away. So not getting a surgery is the best thing for me” he stated.
Fannie held back her tears as she stared at Alfred. He is really suffering because of her. She thought as she moved away from him.
“So do you think that living the rest of your life blind will make Fannie happy?” She asked.
“At least that will keep her away “He said.
“I suggest you go for the surgery”She said softly.
“I won’t. I won’t go for the surgery”He replied.
“Just do it and I promise to stay away like you want”She said suddenly.
“What the hell are you saying?” Alfred asked.
“That am Fannie! I am Fannie, Alfred. The one you so desperate to have out of your life”She said.
