Yeomra hesitated, which seemed to annoy Blueberry. He sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets, scanning the area until his gaze settled on a peculiar structure that resembled an altar, although not quite.
With a smirk, he quickly dashed toward it, ready to destroy it, even though he had no idea what it was. Yeomraβs eyes widened.
βWhat do you think youβre doing?β she exclaimed.
βSeems like wh@tΓ«ver this is, itβs pretty important. Letβs find out,β Blueberry retorted, his smirk unwavering as he prepared to smash it. Just as he was about to strike, Yeomra screamed, causing him to halt and face her.
βNow Iβm curious to see whatβs in there,β he muttered, staring intently at the object. Suddenly, his gaze landed on a box at its center. Before he could examine it further, Yeomra unleashed Mu Yul.
βYou can leave,β she shouted, while Blueberry stood up and walked over to Mu Yul.
βSorry if I messed with you,β He said, flashing Yeomra a smile, to which she responded with an eye roll.
Blueberry held Mu Yul and led him out of the place. How he managed to enter the underworld was a mystery to himself as well.
When they finally returned to the land of the living, Blueberry released his grip on Mu Yul, who stared at him. Blueberry avoided his gaze.
βDonβt give me that look. I didnβt save you, okay? I just wanted you to keep your promises,β he said, while Mu Yul chuckled.
βYour ego wonβt even admit it, but thank you, friend,β Mu Yul replied as they walked down the road. They decided not to go to school, and Mu Yul took Blueberry to his apartment.
βYou were serious when you said you had a place to stay? I thought grim reapers didnβt do all this. Your Yeomra really likes you,β Blueberry muttered, taking a seat on the bed and bouncing on it.
βHmmβ¦ sheβs always love me, but not until I stole the β sword of hellβ to help those kids,β Mu Yul replied, sitting down next to him.
βAt least now I have someone who showed up as a friend. I only came to the human world to take souls without revealing myself. But this time, Iβm glad I did, and Iβm also glad I made a friend like you.β
βCut the crap. Iβm not your friend,β Blueberry said, resting his head on the bed. Mu Yul did the same as they stared at nothing in particular.
β
βHey Kelvin, what are you singing?β Devyn, drawn by the melody Kelvin was singing, asked as she approached him. Kelvin was the type of kid who had no friends until Devyn decided to stay with him.
These two grew fond of each other and developed feelings for each other, but neither of them opened up about it.
βMy momβ¦ It was a song Dad sang to her on their weddingβ¦ Why?β
βI love it. Will you teach me too?β She asked, while Kelvin nodded. He held Devynβs hand and took her to their music hall.
βI donβt know how to play the piano that well, though. Mom was so busy, so I couldnβt take classes like I used to,β Kelvin said, and she nodded with a smile.
He started playing the melody while Devyn shook her head, following the flow of the song. When Kelvin finished playing, she gave him a thumbs up.
βIβm jealous. You have a mom who teaches you how to play, while my mom knows nothing about the instrument,β Devyn pouted as they walked out of the hall.
βIβll teach you the song tomorrow, okay? Mom composed it, and apart from her, just the two of us will know about it,β Kelvin said.
βPromise?β she asked, bringing her finger for a pinky promise, which Kelvin took.
βPromise,β he smiled, staring at Devyn, who laughed cutely. He smiled too.
Days passed, and their friendship grew even stronger. They were always there for one another, ate together, played together, and even sneaked out of the house just to see each other. They did so many good things together.
Their parents were aware that their kids were attracted to each other, but everything changed after a hide-and-seek game between the kids, which resulted in their school being shut down.
β
BACK TO THE PRESENT
βAre you perhapsβ¦ Devyn Han?β he asked, as if his brain had shattered and he was just trying to gather the pieces together.
βAm I Devyn Han? Really, Kelvin? Or should I say Valerie? Where the hell did you run off to 13 years ago, huh?β she retorted. Her voice held a mixture of anger and curiosity. There was no denying itβValerie was standing in front of her childhood crush.
Tears welled up in his eyes as he blinked back the emotions. βDevyn,β he called out calmly.
βI just need an answer, and I really donβt care anymore. Iβve lived my life in hiding, but Iβm glad Iβm doing well. I just want to know where you ran off to during the incident and why you didnβt even come to check on me when I was admitted,β she said, taking a few steps backwards.
Valerie sighed, as he stared at Devyn for a long moment. βI was kidnapped,β he finally confessed. βI heard you scream that day, and in fear, I followed your voice, which led me to that restricted area. I donβt know what happened after that, cos I suddenly woke up from sleep and found myself in an unfamiliar environment.β
βI donβt know if youβll believe me, but after I managed to escape a few days later, I heard about the school closure. I went to your house, hoping to find you at your window, but your neighbor told me that you and your mom had been kicked out of the house. I searched for you but couldnβt find you. Did you grow up thinking I ran off after that day?β he asked, a mix of pain and hope in his voice.
βNot only that, but that you caused the incident. If you hadnβt suggested that game, none of this would have happened. Did you know that after the incident, my dad h@tΓ«d me? My own dad even called me a monster, claiming that I was ruining his image,β Devyn shouted, her voice choked with tears.
βHow I wish I had never heard this song today because, even with your explanation, and with what I went through, I still h@tΓ« you, Kelvin,β Devyn said, tears streaming down her face. Her mind drifted back to that snowy night when her dad beat up her mom and then chased them out of their house. Since then, life hadnβt been easy for her and her mom.
Valerie stared at her, speechless. He couldnβt help but feel a sense of happiness seeing the girl who had stolen his heart as a kid, and he had never dated anyone since then, waiting in hope for Devyn to show up.
Now that she had, he couldnβt believe he hadnβt recognized her, not even by her name. What had he expected when he believed some names were just coincidences?
Kelvin was the name his grandma had given him, while Valerie was the name his mom called him. He had stopped answering to the name Kelvin the day his grandma died, and even his mom had stopped calling him that until he got used to Valerie.
βIβll pretend this day never happened,β Devyn sniffed and started to leave, but he caught up with her and hugged her from behind.
βDonβt leave yet, just a few more seconds,β he pleaded, tears streaming down his face. Devyn wasnβt even bothered by his tears as she tried to free herself.
βMom wants me to leave the group because of the incident with Nash. Iβm sure Maikel and the others received the same news, and thatβs why thereβs such a calm atmosphere today,β he said, and Devyn stopped struggling.
βHuh?β
βSo please, just a few minutes, and then you can choose to walk away or stay,β Valerie muttered, tears streaming down his face. Devyn stood there until Valerie released her. She turned slowly to stare at him.
βWhat do you mean?β
βThanks for the comfort,β he said and began to leave but stopped at the door.
βIβm sorry for everything that happened that day,β He said and finally left the hall. Devyn wiped away her tears, removing her makeup in the process.
βOh no, how do I go out?β she muttered and used her hair to cover her face properly.
βI wish I could get my face back, gosh,β she muttered and left the hall, holding her hair in place so it wouldnβt reveal the burnt spot on her face as she headed to class.
β
βYou lazy humanβ¦ How could you not even do a simple job?β Mr. Robinson heard a voice in his head as he stared at his severed hand.
β Well, you did a great job while I was in your body. But now, Iβm injured and need to hide for the time being. But Iβll surely be backβ¦ back to get my revenge on these humans!β The spirit laughed, finally leaving Mr. Robinsonβs body. Immediately after the spirit departed, Mr. Robinson coughed up blood.
He fell to his knees and reached for his phone, but he wasnβt able to make a call before taking his last breath.
β
Valerie sat down with Nash, who noticed that his lashes were wet.
βDid you cry?β Nash asked, looking at Valerie, who nodded.
βWhy? Did someone hurt my baby?β Nash held his face and he chuckled.
βI saw someone I never thought Iβd see,β He replied, glancing at Maikel, who smiled at him.
βWhy donβt we go home? I feel suffocated in here,β He said again.
βIs there something youβre trying to hide from us?β Sweetheart asked, but Valerie shook his head and stood up. Nash did the same, signaling to Maikel, who understood. The seven boys left the classroom, leaving the girls wondering what had happened to them.
The boys arrived home, and Valerie stared at each of them one by one.
βI can sense the silence, but starting tomorrow, weβre going to decide whether MARVINS stays or not. So thereβs no need to be downcasted. Iβll be in my room,β Valerie added, then left for his room. The boys exchanged glances.
βDid your mom or dad tell you to leave the group?β Nash faced Maikel, and he nodded slightly.
βMy mom said Iβll be going to the US tomorrow,β Alistair spoke up.
βMy dad said Iβll be changing schools,β Rema said.
βSame here, but that wonβt happen anyway,β Nash replied, and they all turned to Ian and Sweetheart.
βGrandma knows nothing about this, but itβs surely going to make her sad if MARVINS cease to exist,β Ian replied.
βMom and Dad said I should come over tonight, but I donβt think they even know their son,β Sweetheart chuckled.
βYou need to go see your parents, just like Valerie said. Tomorrow will determine if the name MARVINS still stands,β Maikel said, and went to his room.
βGosh, why did our parents decide to spoil our mood? Or are they possessed?β Rema wondered aloud, as he sat down. Sweetheart had a sad face on. As the only child of his parents, the people who showed him love and acted like brothers to him were the friends he was living with.
He couldnβt even imagine a life without them. Would they all go their separate ways? No, he needed to talk some sense into his parents, he thought, before heading to his room.
β
Blueberry got out of bed and faced Mu Yul, who sat upright too.
βIβll head home now, and as for the amusement park, letβs go there another time,β he said, and Mu Yul nodded.
βThanks, buddy,β Mu Yul smiled, but Blueberry frowned. Mu Yul quickly understood, and his face returned to normal.
βThatβs better,β Blueberry nodded and headed to the door. Mu Yul waved gently at him as he watched him leave.
He lay back on his bed, his eyes staring at nothing in particular as he tried to remember his past, but he couldnβt, no matter how hard he tried.
βMu Yul, why were you in a dark room crying? Who locked you up and why?β he wondered and closed his eyes.
βYou bastard,β the word suddenly echoed in his head, and he groaned in pain.
β Arghh!!β he winced, holding his head to suppress the pain.
β
Miss Rachel visited the beginner class and taught them a few basics of music. Devynβs mind was far off, still preoccupied with what Valerie had told her about the boys separating.
All the lecturers fell on deaf ears until Miss Rachel finished her class. Lesley, who noticed Devynβs distraction, had to tap her to bring her back to her senses.
βHuh?β
βYouβve been down ever since you went to see MARVINS. Didnβt you see them?β she asked.
βOh, no. I ended up seeing Kelβ¦ I mean Valerie,β Devyn replied with an awkward smile, and Lesley nodded in understanding.
A gasp escaped Miss Rachelβs mouth, and all the students turned to face her.
βMr. Robinson, the director, died in his mansion. His hand was chopped off, and he was stabbed, or should I say, slashed in the stomach?β Miss Rachel revealed, causing the studentsβ eyes to widen.
βHuh?β Devyn exclaimed.
βHis burial will be tomorrow,β Rachel continued, then addressed the students. βThe principal will release the address of the deceased. I hope we all can attend his final goodbye.β
βAt this rate, Iβll dismiss the class,β She said abruptly and hurriedly left the room. The news came as a shock, but who could have killed Mr. Robinson? The question remained unanswered.
βBerry didnβt come to school?β Devyn wondered aloud as she and Lesley left the classroom together.
********
Blueberry ate from a cup of yoghurt as he watched the news.
βSo, the director was the host of the evil man? Does that mean the βsword of hellβ didnβt work on that fool?β He asked, dropping the cup of yogurt.
βIf it didnβt kill him, it means he survived but is weak. Heβll go into hiding, and when he fully recovers, heβll find a new host?β His eyes widened.
βThen the rate at which the innocent will die will increase greatly? Nah, not when Iβm still amidst these humans,β He said, as he stared at the TV. However, his attention was drawn away when the door burst open.
βBerry, have you been home all this time?β
βNah, I went to see Mu Yul,β he replied, while Devyn went to him and sat next to him.
βWhat happened when you were with MARVINS? I heard they wanna go separate ways,β Devyn asked.
βHow would I know that? Only they know what they saw, and itβs none of my business what they do. I only went there to help them out,β He replied nonchalantly.
βTch,β Devyn scoffed, folding her arms below her chest. Blueberry didnβt look at her as his eyes were fixed on the TV.
β
In their respective houses, the boys all stood in front of their parents since they had left their residences to go see them.
They wanted to convince their parents about the idea of leaving the group, but their words seemed to fall on deaf ears.
βIβve told you, youβre quitting that group, and nothing can be changed about that.β
βI canβt watch my only son being attackedβ¦β The boys all raised their heads coincidentally to stare at their parents with widened eyes.
