Ethan stood up and walked to the door,
suddenly the next thing that happened, Ethan
was pushed to the ground.
Luke and some other thugs walked into the
living room.
Luke smiles and looks around the house.
“So this is the trashy house you lived in?”
Luke said and kicked the light wooden furniture
table, destroying it with the pancakes scattered
everywhere.
“Ethan…
Who are this?
Harry seems very angry.
“Just keep quiet, Harry… Let me handle this”
Ethan shut his mouth immediately to avoid
trouble.
“Remember, you and I have some unfinished
business”
Luke said and knelt on his toes facing Ethan
who was still on the ground.
“All those videos that you have against me,
where are they? ”
He asked.
Ethan saw the dangerous look on Luke’s face.
He looked at all his thugs each holding a gun.
“Wow… I see you are scared of me after all”
Ethan smile.
“Am scared of him”
Luke said and laughed sarcastically. His other
thugs also burst into laughter.
“You should be scared of us and not the other
way round”
“Am not scared of you all… Why didn’t you
come alone and fight me?
Why did you bring your minions with you?
Why?
Ethan stared at his face.
“That’s because you are scared of me, you know
what am capable of”
Ethan said with all courage in me. A fear erupts
in Luke’s eyes. He began to shake inside.
“You knew I was going to expose all your
secrets pretty soon”
Luke became angry. He pulled out his gun and
held Ethan’s neck to the tip of the gun about to
pull the trigger.
“Am going to kill you right now”
Luke said with his scary red-looking eyes.
“Then do it…
Ethan put the gun closer to himself.
“Do it and you won’t get your hands on those
videos… I will make sure the videos reach the
cops before I die”
Luke pulls his head away. He stood up on his
feet and rushed to grab Harry, wrapping his
hands across Harry’s neck and pointing the gun
at the corner of his head.
“Hey, I have no business in this…
Just let me go”
I don’t know what transpires between you two
but please leave me out of it”
Harry pleaded.
“Am sorry… But you are in this too,
You are his friend”
Luke replied.
“What? Friend
I don’t even know him from Adam”
Ethan was surprised Harry denied him.
“Wow…
Keep it up, Harry”
Ethan clapped feeling disappointed.
“Am sorry, Ethan…
I just want to live”
“Give me those videos or your friend dies”
Luke warned.
“Like you heard him, he is longer my friend. He
already denied my friendship…

Ethan said and folded his arms.
Luke saw it’s not going to work…
He became frustrated and shot Ethan’s leg.

He said to his thugs.
Ethan screamed and held his leg painfully.

I will make sure you don’t smell that CEO
position, am going to make sure Lauren
remains in that seat.

Ethan said as he cried out in pain.
Luke just scoffs.
“Your life is in my hands right now. It’s clinging
on death”
He replied and walked out of Luke’s small
apartment.
Harry rushed to Ethan after they left.
“C’mon let’s get you to the hospital”
Harry said carrying him up.
Someone rushed inside their apartment.
Harry looked up to see a beautiful lady.
“Omg, Ethan…
What happened? I heard a gunshot”
Beth asked seeing everywhere scattered.
(Beth was one of the ladies also working at
Linde Plc with the recovery department)
“I was attacked”
Ethan replied.
“But don’t worry am fine”
“No, he is not…
Harry spoke out.
“He has been shot in the leg and we have to get
him to the hospital”
“Omg…
Beth gasped.
“Am sorry to ask this in this type of situation”
Who are you?”
Harry asked.
“Oh, am Beth…
Ethan’s neighbor, I live next to his apartment”
Ethan and I also both worked at Linde Plc.
Ethan shrugged.
“I was surprised the new tenant who packed in a
few days ago with her”
So can you both get me to the hospital now?”

Lauren walked into her office as Ellie followed
behind her.
“Boss…
One of the employees won’t be able to make it
today”
Ellie said.

You are the one to handle that…
The employees know the rules and policies of
this company…
He or she can’t be absent for three or more days
in a month”
“Yeah, but this is the employee’s first time
Ethan called he wouldn’t make it to work for a
few days cos he got into an accident and is
currently hospitalized”
Ellie broke the sad news.
“Well, that’s good for him. Just tell me he has
three days to get back to the office or he will be
fired”
“Miss Lauren… He got into an accident”

I have no business with that, just handle it…
I have a lot of things to do and think about”
Lauren replied.
Ellie sighed and walked out of the office.

After Ellie broke the news to Jessica and
Stephan. Stephan burst into laughter.
“Finally, Nemesis has caught up with him”
Stephan said laughing hard.

“Can we visit him after work?
“Just know am not coming with you guys”
Stephan quickly said.

Lauren was lost in the world of thought.
Different thoughts cross her mind.
She tries to connect wh@tëver had happened to
her in the past few weeks together and it all
seems someone is behind her predicament and
can’t figure out who.
Who could wish her bad things? Who would
want to tarnish her image, and bring down the
respect she has been building for herself before
her parents died?
Who would want to see her career going down
the drain?

She thought again.
Her mind went to Alex’s words.

Det Lewis walked into Ethan’s ward. Harry was
still having a chat with Ethan.
As Ethan saw him. He sighed and tried to think
of a lie he could make up in a few seconds.
Harry excused them giving them some space to
have a chat.
“Evening,
You must be Ethan Baker”
Det Lewis asked.
“Yeah…
“Okay, am det…
He said but was interrupted by Ethan.
“I know who you are, det Lewis.
The detective who will soon be fired from the
police department unless he solves any difficult
unsolved cases”
Ethan smile.
Det Lewis was confused.
“How do you know about me?
Have we met?”
“No, we haven’t.. but I do watch the news.
That’s where I got to know you”
“So I was infamous?”
Ethan shrugged.
“What do you want?
He asked.
“There is no case to solve in my situation, am
telling you this right now not to waste your time”
“So how do you have a gunshot on your leg?
You were fine before now, right?”
“About that, my friend unintentionally shot me
in the leg. He was testing out the small pistol
cos he hasn’t held a gun before”

Det Lewis asked.
He seems not to believe what Ethan just said.

So please you can leave now”
Am only accepting visitors who came to check
up on me and see if am okay and not visitors
who are here to interrogate me”

Det Lewis sighs.

He said and walked out.
As Det Lewis walked out. He began to think over
what just happened.
“Ethan Baker is definitely hiding something”
Why is he protecting Luke?”
He thought as he walked out of the hospital.
Ethan took a deep breath as Det Lewis left.
“That was a close one”
Harry said as he came in.
“Yeah…
And I think he didn’t buy our lie”
“Who cares?
As long as that can keep him away from you”
Harry replied.
Another knock came on the door.
Ellie and Jessica walked in.
Ethan smiled on seeing both of them. Jessica
held some piles of flowers.
“Is that for me?”
Ethan asked.
“Obviously…
Jessica walked to him and hugged him. He
collected the flowers.
Ellie also walked to him and gave him a slight
hug.
“Thanks for visiting”
Ethan appreciates.
“There is no need to thank us…
We just have to”
We are sorry about the accident”
Ellie said.
“It’s okay… It’s just a little wound”
“No, it’s not…
Harry made a fake cough.
Jessica and Ellie both turned to Harry.
“Oh am sorry for not introducing you guys”
Ethan apologized.

Harry whispered to Ethan but the ladies could
hear her.
They just smiled.

I thought I was invisible since you two entered
and I was not being noticed”
Harry joked.
“We are sorry… We are just so concerned about
him cos right now Linde Plc can’t afford to lose
him”
Ellie replied.
“That explains the big fat salary and the
flowers”
“Where is Lauren?”
Didn’t she come with you guys?”
“She isn’t coming and also you might lose your
job”
Ellie said.
“Why is that?
Have I done anything wrong?”
“According to the company’s policies…
You can’t be absent from work for more than
three days in a month no matter the
circvmstances”
And am pretty sure, you are going to spend
more than three days here”
Ethan just smiled.

Ellie and Jessica looked at each other before
looking back at Ethan.

Jenny and Beth (Members of the recovery
department) walked across the lobby as they
engaged in a chitchat.
“How is it going?
Jenny asked.
“Well, I think it will be hard to get Ethan into the
recovery department
Miss Ellie will make it difficult for us and I think
the plan of becoming Ethan’s neighbor to get
him on the team might not work”
“We have to get him on the team no matter
what… He is the only one that can save our job
or Lauren Quinn is definitely going to erase the
department”
Jenny replied.
“Well, you said those same words when Stephan
once helped out”
Beth said.
“But this time, it’s different…
I think Ethan is the one, he can save us. We just
have to convince Miss Ellie”

Miss Ellie walked into her office. Miss Lauren
was busy on her computer shifting all her focus
to the computer system.
She noticed Miss Ellie walked in.
“Ethan Baker hasn’t resumed yet?
She asked.
“He is still at the hospital, he will be discharged
in a few days”
Ellie replied.
“Hope you inform him he has already lost his
job?”
“Yeah…
But he is not going to lose it. You are not going
to fire him right?”
Lauren looked at Ellie.
“He is getting fired… You and I both know the
company policy”
“Linde Plc needs him…
We need someone like Ethan Baker in this
company”
Lauren sighs.
“Ellie…
Just talk to me, are you in love with this guy? Do
you like him so much that you are defending
him every time”
Ellie was surprised and caught off guard by
Lauren’s words.
She scoffs and fakes a smile.
“Ethan is only a good friend of mine just like
how am a good friend of yours”
She said but her face says a different thing. She
is really in love with Ethan.
“Are you sure cos the way you act nice around
him these days is very convincing you are
falling for him”
Lauren said.

But all am saying is that I just want what’s best
for Linde Plc.
Ethan Baker is a good man and we need him”.

What has he done for the company?”
Lauren relaxed and asked.
“Well, he saves your CEO position… If not for
him, you won’t be sitting right here and also he
helps the recovery department to bring back the
debt from other companies who owe us”
Ellie replied.
Lauren sighed realizing Ellie was right.
“And it would be very bad and wrong if you
didn’t pay a visit to one of your best employees
who got into a gunfight accident”
She added.
“Alright…
Fine, am going to visit him but that doesn’t
mean he is not getting fired.
He is still going to lose his job once he violates
the rules”
Lauren replied.
Ellie put up a little smile.
“You can leave now”
Lauren said noticing Ellie was still in her office.

Ethan was fast asleep but noticed someone’s
touch on his finger. He opened his two eyes
slowly and saw Lauren.
He thought he was dreaming for a second. He
moved his body away from the bed a bit and
touched Lauren’s face and chick.
“You are real”
Ethan muttered.
Lauren got his hands from her face.
“Yeah, I am real…
I see you are surprised to see me”
“How are you feeling?”
“Why do you come and see me?
I thought you didn’t care about me”
Ethan asked.
“Ellie forced me…
And for what you’ve done for the company. It
won’t be good if I didn’t pay you a visit”
She replied.
Ethan smiled and moved closer to her. He
stared at her face.
“Thanks for coming…
Your presence brightens up my day”
“Alright… Since you are fine and okay
I think am going to take my leave now”
She said and stood up. Ethan quickly grabs her
hand.
“Stay with me for a little bit”
He said.
“I have some office work to do at home”
“Office work can wait…
Do you still want to fire me?”
“I will make sure you get fired if you violate the
rule”
She said trying to release her hand from Ethan’s
grip but couldn’t.
Her brain flashed into some old memories.
Memories of when she found out she was
pregnant in this same hospital.
Ethan noticed the sad face Lauren put on. He
saw she was thinking of something that made
her sad.
He quickly drew her to himself and hugged her.
Lauren wanted to pull off from the hug but
Ethan held her tight.
Ethan tapped her back gently.
“Everything is going to be okay”
Lauren breathes out in relief as she embraces
Ethan.
