Chapter Twenty five
Andrew woke up to find the space beside him empty.
Claire had held him close last night, and when he had stirred in the wee hours of the morning. She still had her arms around him. He had fought the urge to make love to her and had slept again. Expecting to find her in his arms. But she was no where to be found.
He picked up his phone. Calling her number, but she had left it in the room. Where could she have gone to this early. He thought as he put on his clothes. Intent on searching for her.
He found her in the garden. Starring at the roses his mother had always took pride in.
She had her back turned to him, and she didn’t even realise that he was approaching.
It wasn’t until he wrapped his arms around her that she did.
“Good morning “He said wistfully. Feeling happy to know that she was still here with him.
“Morning”She replied in return.
“Why are you up so early? Its suppose to be our honey moon”Andrew stated softly.
“I had a lot of things on my mind. I needed to think”Claire replied as he held her close to himself.
“I know a best cure of thinking”He suggested softly.
“And what would that be?”she asked as she grinned gently.
“Making love. Should we head back upstairs to give it a try?” He asked softly only to feel her withdrawal.
She pulled away from him. Walking towards a rose to pick it up but he could sense the change in her.
“I don’t think that will be a good idea”She replied.
“Why? Its something meant to happen between us. You weren’t against it last night ”
“Let’s just say I was worked up yesterday. I wasn’t thinking straight and I had been too weak to resist you. But we both know that this is just a pretence”Claire said as she turned to stare at him.
“So we are back to it being a pretence right?”he asked stonily.
“It was always a pretence “Claire replied infuriating him more.
“That’s a lie. Just the other night. You told me to give us a chance. It wasn’t just a pretence for you when I held you in my arms last night. You feel the same way I do, Claire. You don’t just want to admit it”Andrew said this as he held her by her arms.
“What do you feel for me?”Claire asked softly. Hoping with all her heart that it isn’t what she is thinking.
“I love you Claire. Have loved you ever since the day I saw you. Its has never been a pretence to me. It has always been the real thing and I know you feel the same way”He declared. Confirming her suspicion.
Claire pulled away from him, wanting to keep her distance as she forced herself to say what she had to say.
“Well. You are wrong, Andrew. I don’t love you. I never did and if I didn’t resist your kisses last night. Its because I wanted to know how it is between a man and a woman. If it had happened last night. It will only be something of a novelty to me. Like a teacher teaching a new student”She clenched her hand tightly. Wanting to hurt herself for hurting him, but she had to do it. She had to put a stop to things before it get worse.
“I don’t believe you Claire. Just what happened between the few hours we were at the hotel? What made you like this?”He asked as he moved towards her. Not granting her the distance she wanted.
“Nothing happened. I don’t love you and stop building up hope of us being happily wedded,cause to me it’s all a pretence”She said and he would have replied if Sofia hadn’t choosen the moment to interrupt them.
“What do you want? Can’t you see we are having a discussion?”Andrew tossed angrily at Sofia who didn’t bother hiding the satisfaction that she had interrupted a very crucial discussion.
“I just came to inform Claire that a friend of hers is here to see her. Well he is not exactly here to see you because he is my guest but he wishes to congratulate you. So when you have finished your discussion. You can come to see him”Sofia stated and after a swift glance at Andrew. She left.
“I will go and…. ”
“We still have to talk, Claire.”Andrew stated fiercely, interrupting her.
“I have nothing to say to you ,Andrew. I don’t wish to talk about this again”She replied quickly. Leaving him standing at the garden looking bereft.
Am sorry Andrew. But I have to do this. She thought as she went to the sitting room to see who the guest is.
“Ben! What are you doing here?”She found herself asking when she saw the guest Sofia was talking about.
“I came for a little vacation. Sofia invited me to stay here. I never knew I would be meeting you here again after you left without saying a word”Ben said softly.
She knew she had left New York without saying anything to anyone except her family, but circvmstances had prevented that.
“So it’s true”he muttered softly starring at the ring in her hand.
“You got married to Andrew”He said and she nodded as a reply.
“It’s too late for me now” he muttered to himself. But Claire had heard and had wanted to ask him what he meant when Andrew walked in. Coming towards her and putting a possessive arm around her.
“Mr Grand. So good to see you again. You must be the guest Sofia invited”Andrew stated putting on a false smile. Claire knew he wasn’t pleased with Ben arrival.
“Yes I am. If I had known you two would be here. I would never have accepted Sofia request”Ben replied.
“Well it’s not too late to leave”Andrew suggested lightly.
“He isn’t going to leave. I invited him, and he will stay here as long as he wants and besides. Ben and your wife have been childhood friends. They must have a lot of things in common and would want to talk to each other”Sofia suggested.
“Well, that will be a bit of a problem cause I intend to claim Claire attention for the whole day. Why don’t you keep your guest company and ……”
“I would like to talk to Ben. There are things that I left pending with him. Shall we?”Claire said interrupting Andrew. She took Ben hand and pulled him out of the room, leaving Andrew and Sofia starring at them both.
“You invited him here on purpose ?”Andrew asked Sofia who nodded gladly.
“Of course! I did. I had to bring him if I want to have you back”Sofia replied.
“Still on that ? I thought you gave up when I married Claire?”Andrew asked.
“I didn’t give up, Andrew. And do you want to know why? That’s because I know your marriage to her won’t last. Your discussion in the garden is an example.”
“Were you eavesdropping on our conversation?”He asked.
“No. I don’t have to listen to your conversation. The look on your faces is enough. Don’t be too surprise when she choose to leave with Ben”Sofia tossed at him before she left the room.
He knew Sofia had invited Ben to stir up trouble but he wouldn’t allow that to happen. It took him a lot to get Claire here and he would try to get to the bottom of things with her.
Claire has been making that difficult for him. Andrew thought some hours later.
They were all at the terrace after having dinner, and Claire was talking to Ben. Giving him all her attention while she ignored him.
He had tried talking to her but she had excused herself. Saying she had to know if Ben was comfortable.
He was getting angry with every minute. He didn’t know why she suddenly started being indifferent towards him.
It hurt seeing her distance herself from him. He had to get her to talk to him before the night end. He thought as he drowned the rest of his whiskey.
“Excuse me. But I would like to have a word with my wife”Andrew stated as he broke the discussion they were both having.
“Can’t it wait?” Claire asked not wanting to talk to him.
“It can’t. If you would rather stay. I would have to make a scene and you won’t like that my lovely wife”He threatened softly and reluctantly she excused herself leaving with Andrew.
Immediately the couple left. Sofia went towards to Ben.
“What do you think? Will it work?”She asked.
“Judging from the way Claire have been avoiding Andrew. I think it will”Ben replied as he gulped down his vodka.
“Really?”
“I accepted your invitation to get back the woman I love and I won’t leave until I attain that. So put your mind at rest. It will work”Ben stated firmly.
