CHAPTER FORTY & FORTY-ONE: ARTHUR’S
CONFESSION
Arthur remain seated outside the
operation room, my gaze look at my hands once
more, lacey blood, the blood slowly drying up,
all these is my fault, I did this to her, if only, if
only I haven’t been this horrible to people, am
sure nobody would have kidnapped her.
What do I do now? What if something happens
to her? I won’t ever be able to forgive myself, I
can’t live without her, I can’t even breath
properly.
” Arthur?” Looking left, I watch George and
Monica rush over to my direction” are you
alright?” I couldn’t respond before Monica break
down in tears.
” What happened to her? Why was she shot ”
Monica eyes meet mine, I know for a fact she is
blaming me ” this is all your fault, I knew you
weren’t good for her….you keep causing
problems in her life ” her high-pitched voice
attracted attention ” what do I do now? What if
something bad happens to her?” Her eyes meet
mine again ” what happened, who shot her?”
” It’s my fault ” lowering my gaze a tear drop
from my eyes ” everything is due to my
foolishness, I caused everything ” as if I haven’t
heard enough from nagging people, sir Williams
rush into the hospital, his gaze quickly meet
mine, he look terrible.
” Where is she?” He rush his words ” where is my
daughter ” George tried to calm him down but
that didn’t help ” you, what did you do to her….I
told you didn’t I? Bring her back home, bring her
back to me!!!!” He looks so pitiful ” if you did,
none of this would have happened.”
” Am sorry ” I mumble ” it’s all my fault ”
The moment the operation room open, I stand
to my feet and rush over to the doctor ” how is
she? Will she be alright?”
He nod ” she is stable right now but
unfortunately she has gone into coma ” I step
back at the news ” she also lost her child due to
the excessive bleeding ”
” Her child?” I look at him ” do you mean…”
Sniffing, I force the words out ” she was
pregnant?”
” Yes, few weeks pregnant” the doctor mumble ”
sorry for your lost ” he speak on ” right now we
should just pray and hope she wakes up ”
” She has to right?” Monica chipped in ”
everybody wakes up from coma right?”
” Is a fifty percent chance, most people die in
that deep sleep while others take years or
months before waking up ” he mutter,
scratching the back of his neck ” let’s hope for
the best, excuse me ” the moment he left, I fall
back down to the chair.
She was pregnant?
It’s also my fault that my child died, so far I
have killed two of my blood and now lacey is in
coma, I have to see her, I have to talk to her.
Before I could stand up, I watch William and
Monica rush into the Ward.
” Arthur ” George gain my attention ” what
happened, why didn’t you inform me of all
these, how did this happened?”
Clearly my throat, I force a smile ” you probably
have a lot going in your life right now, I didn’t
want to add more troubles in them”
” Did I ever complain to you?”
” It was pond ” I look at George” he shot her….
But don’t worry, he is dead ”
George run his hands through his hair” why
didn’t you inform me of all these? Do you not
trust me?”
” Do you think this is the time to say all these?” I
stand to my feet ” the woman I love is laying
down right there? I have no idea if she will wake
up or not!!!!” Tears freely flow from my eyes ” do
you have any idea the pain am passing through
right now? The thought that she might die keep
replaying in my head ”
” Arthur I…..”
I nod ” yes, it’s my fault, if only I paid more
attention to her, she wouldn’t have been
kidnapped, if only I wasn’t such a horrible
person, no one will seek out revenge on me”
looking at George, I hit my chest ” I know I have
sin George, I know I have done a lot of horrible
things but lacey is innocent…she is so kind but
my sin taint her, that’s why I know it’s my fault ”
not waiting for him to say any other thing, I walk
away, head towards the chapel in the hospital
building, approaching the alter, I knelt down.
Looking at the statue of Jesus, I prayed….it’s
been so long but I did ” I beg of you, do not take
the one thing I cherished most away from me,
please do not take her away ” clenching my
hands to my chest, I cry ” I know I have sin, this
should be my karma but not with lacey, she has
done nothing wrong ….please punish me
instead, take my life not hers ” hitting my chest I
cry ” please I beg of you lord, please help me
just one more time, please save her.
” Arthur?” George rush to my direction when I
step out of the chapel ” you should go home,
take a bath ….I will be with her ”
” Later ” ignoring him I went ahead to see her,
shutting the door, my gaze stare at a sleeping
lacey, she look so pale ” lacey?” Holding her
hand, I bend down ” please come back to me ”
rest my head on the bed ” am begging.”
Edwin rush in, open the door, our eyes meet, he
didn’t even let me say anything before grabbing
me by my collar and punching my face. In any
other circvmstance, I know for a fact that I
would have retaliate, but right now, I have not
even one strength left in me.
” What were you thinking” he growl ” you knew
fully well how dangerous it is to be close to
you!!!!”
” Let go ” I frown, pushing him back ” it’s not
right for you to cause a scene in here, she is
resting”
He chuckle ” resting?” Edwin move closer ” do
you really think she would wake up? Do you
think she would survive this?”
” This is just a coma, she would wake up ” I
clench my hands ” she has to ”
•••••••••••••TWO MONTH LATER•••••••••••
” How is everything?” I collect the file ” is Monica
recovering from her operation?” I asked George
while he nod his head.
” She is alright ” he smile ” she is even pregnant”
I watch how happy he is ” and the child is
healthy ”
” That’s good to hear ” grabbing my cigarettes, I
light it up and stood up ” am sure I have no
other meetings today ”
” Everything has been cleared ” he reply and I
smile
” I should probably go home then, quite tired
right now ”
” Arthur?” I stopped and look at him, he looks so
worried ” are you okay? Everything is fine?” I
fake a smile and nod
” Am good ” grabbing my car keys I mumble ”
your wedding is tomorrow right? I will be there”
” Will be expecting you ”
I grab my jacket and walk out of the company,
in my car, put on seat belt and turn on the
engine, I move directly to the hospital, step out
and rush into the VIP room to meet lacey.
Opening the door, I close it shut and move
towards the bed she is laying on ” today was
quite hectic ” I smile, sitting down and peeling
the apple I found on the table” even the board
directors are having issues with my new design
” fighting the tears from rolling from my eyes, I
clear my throat ” I forgot to inform you ….Angelo
have been caught and Monica, she is pregnant ”
Biting from the apple, I lift my gaze and stare at
lacey, she still haven’t woken up ” you are
missing out in a lot of things lacey, don’t you
think it’s time for you to wake up?” Silence
engulf me and what break it was the computer
connected to lacey, the noise was rather usual
and too fast.
Lacey body shook on the bed ” doctor!!!” I yell,
open the room door ” doctor!!!” The doctor rush
in, shut the door, leaving me outside, I run my
hands through my hair, fear clench my heart, I
could hardly breathe, this is what usually
happens in movies before the person dies.
Does this mean lacey will never wake up? No.
That’s not possible. She won’t die, not yet….
please God, not yet.
I stood right there for thirty minutes before the
doctor walk out ” Mr Arthur?”
” Yes ”
The doctor smile ” she is awake ” I didn’t
hesitate before rushing into the room, tears flow
from my eyes, she look so weak but her eyes,
they are open.
” lacey?”
” Arthur?” She smile ” you have lost a lot of
weight ”
I bend down next to her and hold her hand ”
lacey ” I couldn’t stop crying ” I thought I lost
you, i thought you were gone for good ”
” You must have been lonely ” she slowly turn
her head to meet my gaze ” must have been
scary” I nod and she clean my tears ” sorry, am
sorry, am late ” tears drop from her eyes ” sorry ”
” I love you ” kissing her forehead, I mumble ” so
much ”
