❗ Chapter One❗
In a beautiful kingdom Mrs. Uwana was only
nineteen years old when she married her
husband. Mr. Uwana Philip.
By the time she was twenty years of age,
she had her first child, a beautiful daughter
called Dora.
Her husband, Mr. Uwana, died
a year later through a tragic accident. Mrs.
Uwana was left to cater*
for her daughter all by herself.
“I’m not going to get married again,
to herself my daughter will be my everything.
I’ll never ever get married again” She said to herself.
And as the years rolled
by, she devoted* her time to the care of her
daughter.
Her husband had been thebreadwinner*, but after
his death, Mrs. Uwana assumed that position.
She had very little money, but she decided to survive on it with her
daughter, through petty trading.
Each morning, she left home early to meet the
train at the railway station.
At Ekpene, where they lived, traders brought
foodstuffs on the train from the hinterland,
and it was from these traders that she bought her wares.
Mrs. Uwana usually bought foodstuffs such as plantain, yam, cocoyam, papaya, oranges and cabbages
from these traders and resold them for a small profit at the central
market.
It was with this little profit that she catered for her daughter and
for herself.
All was well at first, but when Dora
reached school-going age and her mother had
to pay school fees, buy her school uniforms,
shoes, school bags, inbaddition to paying other bills, times became very
tough for Mrs. Sasu.
“You can’t do all these alone,” her relatives and neighbours told her.
“You must find yourself another husband, so that he can take very good care of you and
your daughter,” they said to her.
Mrs. Uwana would hear none of this. She could take proper care of herself and of her daughter, she said, and there was no need for
her to re-marry.
So she carried on in her own way until Dora was about six years old.
