❗ Chapter Four❗

She was elated on the big huge of money

” Twelve million cedis,” Mrs. Uwana said with a broad smile after she had finished counting.

She put all the money into her wardrobe, had
a bath and prepared a meal.

When Dora woke up, she went to her mother and asked..

“Mum, what was the matter with me in the
church?” Mrs. Uwana gave her no
direct answer.

She only told her not to worry, that she had probably taken a heavier breakfast and had fallen asleep while the sermon was being
preached.

Dora was not convinced. She was no longer a tiny child.

She was almost twelve years of age, and was
beginning to get worried about what had been happening to her.

Yet her mother would tell her nothing beyond the fact that, whenever she felt she was very tired, she should remain in doors.

How the incident in the church reached Dora’s
school, nobody could tell, but when she went to school the following morning, the pupils
started shouting: “SNAKE GIRL! SNAKE
GIRL!” And they kept running after her
wherever she went.

Perplexed, she returned home with tears all
over her face and told her mother all that had
happened at school.

“Don’t worry, my dear, I’ll send you to another
school” her mother replied.

And to another school Dora went the following term. And to another church they
went a month later. Yet people in the neighbourhood knew who they were. They knew Dora was the Snake girl and her
mother was Mrs.
Uwana.

People started gossiping about them
wherever they went, and this did not go down well with both mother and daughter.

They deliberated and looked for another real estate agent, and he took them to a four
bedroom apartment at Manton Hill and rented it out to them. To avoid further trouble Dora
stopped attending school altogether.

She stayed at home with her mother, watching movies and playing several indoor games.
Sometimes when they were bored, they got
into the car and drove through the streets of
Uyo to while away the time.

By the time she attained eighteen years
of age, Dora was a lovely young lady.

She knew no poverty, and there was nothing she desired that her mother
would not buy for her.

However, all was not going to be bliss forever and one night. Mrs. Uwana was taken ill.

” Call the neighbours,” she said to her daughter.
“Call the neighbours immediately, I’ve to see
a doctor. I feel so
unwell.” She added.

And so Dora called for help. The neighbours
came in her aid, and they took Mrs. Uwana
to the hospital.

She was there for several days. Each morning and evening. Dora prepared meals and hot water and took it to her mother at the hospital.

However, her mother’s condition did not
improve. With the passage of each day,
Mrs. Uwana’s condition worsened.

In fact, her state of health became so bad that it was clear she was going to die.

This saddened Dora very much and, one
morning, she broke down in tears in front of her mother’s hospital bed and wept for
several minutes.

And it was in that position that the strange trance seized her.

She hopped onto her feet, her legs wide apart, and with her palm firmly on her hips and her eyes popping out out of her head, the snake came out of her mouth and started vomiting money on to the floor.
