CHAPTER 28 — FORGIVENESS.

✯✯✯✯✯✯✯

“Here,” Daniel hands her a cup of hot coffee. She nods, taking it from his hands and sips it gently. Lucille couldn’t believe the events that took place tonight — the person that she had always encouraged, loved and even considered her–

She shudders, refusing to even think of that woman as anything else. How could she be so stupid? How did she not see what was right in front of her? Fiona had destroyed her home, her mother’s home, put her brother through so much emotional trauma and– heavens knows what else she has done.

Lucille was beginning to rethink her decision to be a therapist, she had wanted to help people, to make her mother proud and instead she had went ahead to try and soothe the pain of the same woman who caused her mother so much hurt.

Daniel sighs and sits down next to her, “I know it’s alot to take in, but you’ll be fine.” Daniel holds her shoulder and kisses her hair.

They are in Daniel’s mansion, seated on the luxurious cushion by the fireplace. A thick blanket wrapped around Lucille’s body as she holds her cup of tea. “I don’t even know what to think right now,” she whispers with a hoarse voice. “After mom died, I had blamed dad and even myself for it. All I wanted to do was move on, just like she did — I wanted to be strong like her but instead I had helped the person who started all this in the first place.”

“How could I be so stupid?” She questions herself.

“Your not stupid. Am so proud of you, what you’ve become and how far you’ve gone. During the years I searched for you, my mind had conjured up so many horrible instances — what if you were alone on the street with no where to go or worse dead.”

“But you are okay and that’s what matters. You deciding to help people isn’t stupid, think of the others you’ve helped and not one bad person. Like – Mr Duncan, Sophie, S-”

“Wait…how do you know the name of my clients?” She asks.

“Once my men had found out you were alive, I hired a detective to get all your information. I had to know how you were faring.” He shrugged.

“Fair enough.”

“You’ve helped so many people Lucille. Don’t let that she-devil change your perspective of life.” Tears brim her eyes, she pulls him in for hug.

“Am so glad we found our way back to each other.” Even though, she has no recollection of Daniel. Lucille wasn’t worried, there is already a connection between them – she can feel it and now all she needs to do is get her memories back.

“Me too.” He responds. They pull apart, giggling she wipes the tears from her eyes. Drinking her remaining coffee, she stands up and begins to walk around the house – with him following behind closely.

Strolling the down the hall, past the large staircase. The only pictures/paintings hanged on his wall are abstract. Only a large picture frame of him is hanged above the fireplace.

“You don’t have alot of pictures…” She commented.

“Didn’t make alot of memories.” He replied and she frowned, internally vowing to change that. She turns back and moves up the staircase, taking a right she enters his room.

Daniel’s phone rings, “hello.” He pick up immediately. Tuning his conversation out, she looks around his room. Everything is black except for the colourful pin cushions on his couch and bed. A small picture frame catches her eye, she takes it up and her eyes almost pop out seeing Ashely and Daniel smiling lovely at each other.

Oh my God, her brother and Ashely were in a relationship. Their break-up must have been the reason, she had almost hit her that day.

“That bastard!” Daniel curses as he disconnects the line. His outburst makes Lucille turn her attention to him. “You’ll never see him again.” He orders her.

Lucille raises her brow in confusion, “who?”

“Dominique Monet.” He grits out.

Dominique. She didn’t even want to see him again, the shame and embarrassment of having mustered him the courage to tell him how she felt all these years only to be rejected. Of course, she was angry at first but now she just feels ashamed — he didn’t want her and he has made that very clear.

“What do you mean?” She was confused, how did he know about them.

“My men just informed me – about everything. I’ll kill him,” he growled. “The bãstãrd made you cry and he’ll definitely pay.”

Though, they are not in good terms – that didn’t mean she wants him dead and with the way Daniel sounded – he is definitely not joking. “I know it seems bad but let’s not go overboard here…”

“Go overboard. He should be glad am going to make his death painless.”

“No! Daniel, I know he hurt me but we’ve agreed to go our separate ways. Please, don’t do anything stupid.”

“Fine, but maybe I can make an exception. How about I only cut off his hand.” Daniel utters. Lucille snapped her head to him to see if he is joking and there wasn’t a smile on his face.

She frowns, “no.”

“Okay, fine how about only his fingers or toes that’ll do.”

“No.”

“Maybe a little beating.”

“No. Daniel please just leave Dominique alone.”

He grumbles, “fine.”

“You do know that you also broke his sister’s heart right?” She holds up the picture to him. Daniel body goes rigid, he sighs.

“I know and it won’t be easy getting her back. But, I won’t be allowing Duvet anywhere near you.”

“You mean Dominique?”

“Domini, Duvet. Same name, I don’t care! He made you cry and he’s lucky as hell that he hasn’t been beaten up by now.”

Lucille just giggles and mutters, “men.”

“Daniel, what are you going to do with the them?”

Daniel already knew who she was referring to as ‘them.’ “my original plan was death.” He said harshly, her head snapped to him in shock. Seeing her reaction, he added smoothly, “but you can decide what to do with them.”

She breaths a sigh of relief, although they had hurt them badly – she surprisingly didn’t want them dead. “Let them go.”

“What!?” Daniel yells in shock.

“I know they destroyed our home but their kids are innocent. Jason and Monica shouldn’t have to suffer for their parents mistakes. You’ve already done enough — revealing their true colors in front of their children and father.” She closes the distance between them and holds his shoulders, “it’s time to let things go. You’re gone through so much in the last twenty years and I want you/us to start anew.”

“I can see you’ve already found love and thank to your advice, I won’t be giving up my career any soon. You’ve to let them and all of this go…” She says, Daniel nods in agreement. There is no need for revenge anymore, Lucille is alive and okay, and that is all that matters.

Now he only needs Ashely back and there is nothing that is going to stop him from getting her back.

*********************

The Dumont’s sit on wooden chairs in a graveyard silence, even a pin drop can be heard. They had lived and built their lives on the destruction of an innocent family.

“I wish I had never met you.” Peter whispers so quietly, his voice is almost unheard.

“Yeah, me too.” Monica scoffs. Jason just sits there, numb. Ever since, he became a teenager and rebelled against authority – he and his father never saw eye to eye anymore. He always h@tëd him and the way he had treated his mother, fuelled the fire to his hatred and now his father wasn’t his father and his mother is a snake.

“Typical,” Fiona scoffs “blaming me for something you also had a hand in.”

“Am not blaming you for anything. I’ve realized my mistakes and the greatest one was ever meeting you.” He snarls. “If only I had thrown you out, the minute you overstayed your welcome.”

“Why? Why did you do this?” Jason questions.

“I-I was jealous, Dianne had everything. She was the most popular, most loving, had a wonderful family and I wanted that too…” Her tone filled with anguish and regret.

“That’s no excuse to ruin a person’s life,” Lucille’s cold tone interrupts the family’s dialogue. Seeing Peter and Fiona made her cheeks flush in anger, although they are going to let them go. Still doesn’t mean that she and Daniel had to forgive them anytime soon.

Sighing, she glances at them. “Your free to go—”

“Just like that!” Monica yells, the family glare at her with a ‘shut up look.’

Lucille continues, “yes just like that. Your free to live… There is no point in harbouring bitterness anymore, my brother is glad that am safe and I am glad I found him again, and that is all that matters.”

She turns to Fiona, “the money for your therapy will be refunded as soon as possible. I pray we never cross paths again.” She says darkly, turning to leave when Fiona’s calls stops her.

“Lucille! Please forgive me. Everything I did was out of jealousy, I’m so sorry.” She cries out.

“I can forgive you for taking my father away from me, after all my family got over him.” She shrugs nonchalantly. “But I can never forgive you for allowing my mother to die, if your ‘sorry’ could bring back my mother, I would’ve forgiven you in a heartbeat but it can’t… Can it?”

Fiona just lowers her head in shame and without another word, Lucille walks out of the room.
