PRESENT DAY
Amyβs POV
I was over the moon and filled with excitement
as I turned eighteen today. I had spent the past
few months counting down the days until I
could finally call myself an adult. Being
eighteen meant that I was no longer a child and
I had absolute freedom to do everything I
wanted. Itβs going to be a long day, that I could
tell already. I eagerly got up and headed for the
bathroom. I quickly took my bath, straightened
my hair and dressed up. I was certain my family
would be as excited as I am because their first
and only child and by luck, only heir to the
Medina family turned eighteen today.
My family is a typical suburban family. My dad
has lots of companies and it is fair to say that
he is a ravishing billionaire despite being in his
late forties.
My parents love story is one I never get tired of
hearing. Apparently, my mum worked for my
dad and along the line, they both fell in love.
Dad proposed to mum on the very day my best
friend, James was born and they got married
about two months later. Its an incredible love
story, I tell you.
I walked down the stairs and called out to my
parents but I got no response. I could hear the
sound of voices and laughter and music but I
was not seeing anybody. I decided to follow the
voices. It led me to the garden and I gasped.
The garden at the back of my parents mansion
was a sight to behold. An opulent oasis, it was
decorated to the hilt. The lush green lawn was
dotted with glass orbs that glowed and each
one shaded a different vibrant color.
A large fountain of marble and gold stood in
the center, the water cascading down the tiers
into a pool of pristine azure.
The air was filled with the sweet scent of
jasmine and rose, and the garden was alive with
the sound of laughter and music. The walkways
were lined with tall palm trees, their fronds
rustling in the gentle breeze, and bright blooms
of roses, lilies, and hydrangeas. There was also
ornate sculptures of animals and mythical
creatures, adding an aura of enchantment to the
garden.
At the far end, a gazebo overlooked the
garden, a perfect spot for picture taking. The
gazebo was lit up with hundreds of fairy lights,
and there was a large centerpiece featuring a
bouquet of bright flowers and a happy 18th
birthday banner.
I could not contain my excitement. I let out a
scream and smiled. My parents had thrown me
a surprise party. I couldn’t believe it. There were
balloons, streamers, and people everywhere! I
was so excited and immediately everyone
turned and I was greeted by a chorus of people
singing “Happy Birthday” to me.
I saw my parents walking towards me with
smiles all over their faces. Behind them were the
Maxwellβs; James parents. They were wearing
big smiles too. My parents hugged me tightly. It
was so tight and I couldnβt breathe for a second.
βI have the best parents in the whole wide world.
β I said to them after they released me from the
choking hug.
βAnd I have the best daughter in the whole wide
world. Happy birthday my princess.β My dad
said to me.
βHappy Birthday my Amy.β My ever dramatic
mother told me, her eyes already teary.
βHappy Birthday Amy. β The Maxwellβs sang to
me while they both gave me a side hug. Ella and
my mother were very good friends back in the
days and although they are not as close as I
remembered, they still look out for each other.
My dad gave me a small box which was
wrapped with my favourite colour; blue. I
opened it up, and it was a key. A car key! My
parents gifted me a car! I was speechless.
“Happy Birthday again, Amy!” said my mom, her
eyes twinkling with joy. “Thanks, Mom!” I said,
giving her a big hug.
“We thought you deserved a special present for
such a special day,” my dad said, grinning. I
was so overwhelmed with emotion that I didn’t
know how to respond. I just smiled, thanked
them both, and hugged them again.
The garden was filled with laughter and joy as
everyone celebrated my special day. The sun
was shining and a gentle breeze cooled us off
as we enjoyed the celebration. I was dressed in
their finest clothes and the garden was adorned
with colourful decorations and I was happy. I
had the perfect life. The perfect family.
βHolla! Thereβs the birthday girl!β I turned and
saw my best friend James. He looked
handsome as always. I smiled and waved at
him and he ran towards me. James was just a
year older than me and since both our families
were close, we became close also. Ever since we
were little, James and I had been inseparable,
this is mainly because James parents and mine
are long time friends. We had grown up together
and shared so many amazing memories
throughout the years. We chit chatted till noon
and I was very excited and still basking in the
euphoria of my birthday party.
The party went on for hours and I had the best
time. I couldn’t believe that my parents had
done something so thoughtful and generous for
me. I felt so loved and appreciated. It was my
best birthday so far.
At some point during the party, James and I
found ourselves alone, sitting on a bench
beneath a blooming cherry tree. He had brought
me a beautiful bouquet of roses and had
wished me a happy birthday earlier.
βThanks, James,β I said, smiling brightly.
βThis is the best birthday Iβve ever had.β
βIβm glad youβre enjoying it,β he said.
βBut I think the best part is yet to come.β
βThatβs true. You have not given me my gift yet.
β I told him.
βBut I gave you a bouquet.β He told me
chuckling.
βThe bouquet does not count.
Anyone can give me a bouquet. Youβre not
anyone.β I replied.
βI owe you a gift then. I thought ladies love
flowers.β He said looking at me.
βWell, Iβm no lady then.β I replied while hitting
him on his chest.
βOw!β He screamed playfully.
βTell you what?β
I gave him a blank stare.
βTomorrow, I have a surprise for you. And Iβm
not telling you what the surprise is, so please
Amy, do not bother pestering my life. Just be
patient and wait till tomorrow. Is that okay?β
βYou trying to call me a pest? Huh, Maxwell?β I
turned the tables.
βOh my God! Amy! That is not what I meant and
you know it. You just want to be dramatic. This
is you being dramatic.β James said.
God! He knows me so well but no way Iβm
backing down without a fight.
βYouβre wrong. This is me being dramatic.β I
looked around and found a bottle of water and I
emptied the content on his head.
βNow, howβs that for dramatic.β I laughed evilly
and ran.
βOh itβs on, Medina. Itβs on.β He said and stood
up preparing to chase me.
Like I said earlier. Best birthday ever!
