CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

CARMEN’S POV

“Did I do something wrong to Cardo?” I asked Diego almost at the verge of tears. I grabbed the glass of wine for the fifth time since I sat down and off the content went down my throat. Even before he could stop me.

I felt like Sh|t. Never felt like this before. A moment where my fighting can’t help, defending myself or shouting back can’t help. Because the people I want to fight aren’t even there, I can’t find them. They suddenly went missing in all places.

That Bîtch! I wish I got her. I wish I could crush her! I threw down the glass to the floor and it was in pieces.

“Carmen! You will hurt yourself!” Diego screamed as he grabbed my arms. I was bleeding, funny enough, I can’t even feel the pain. He grabbed my bleeding arm and began to tend to it. He brought out his handkerchief and tied it loosely around my arm.

“You need to be treated now.”

“I don’t wanna go anywhere.”

“You have to Carmen. I regret bringing you here in the first place. Let’s go, Ricardo may be looking for you.”

I scoffed when I heard that word, CARDO. “Cardo? Looking for me? Such an irony. And please I don’t wanna hear dead names, it makes my skin wanna cringe.” I said with a stern expression on my face and he sighed.

I ordered for another empty glass since I broke the one I was drinking with and it was brought before us. “What do you wanna do now? You still wanna drink?”He asked while I ignored his question. If I’m drinking, how’s that his business?

“Fill my glass.” I ordered and he did. But not enough. “Full it.”

“No. Carmen you’re getting drunk.”

“That’s why I’m here. I wanna get drunk.”

“Carmen.”

“Just do as I say. If you don’t want to attend your cousin’s funeral in the near future.”

And he filled up my glass. I took it all in one gulp. “Carmen, be careful, Christ! What’s Ricardo going say when he sees you drinking like this.”

“I just said that I don’t wanna hear that name!” I yelled. My head was beginning to spin. I held my head, my eyes rolling around it’s socket.

I was breathing slowly. Then I smiled. “Diego, just tell me, what did I do wrong to Cardo? Why can’t he listen to me? Am I not pretty enough? Look at me.” I held his shoulders and made sure he was looking at me before I delivered my last sentence. “Am I not a beautiful woman? Must every girl be like Lucia? Huh?”

“You’re not bad at all. You’re beautiful.”

“Then why was he avoiding me?
Cardo. That jerk! I’m gonna skin him alive for real this time. I wanna marry a widow. That’s my life goal right now.”

“Don’t you think you’re being so hard on yourself Carmen. He’s the one at fault and you’re beating yourself up about it.” He replied taking away my glass of wine while I struggled to reach for it.

“Give it back.”

“No. You’re drunk now. Your face is all red and you still wanna drink. Come on, give this a break.”

“I want to drink. That’s the only way I can take away this pain. It’s hurting me so much and I can’t breathe right now.” I replied trying to focus but my eyesight wasn’t that steady any more.

I’m seeing things in twos and threes and it felt like the ground is spinning around. My legs are wobbly and I felt like I’m gonna fall off my chair if care is not taken. But Diego was there to guide me, hold me back to my seat with his hand and then put his leg on my couch, his weight will hold me up from falling.

“You know Cardo so well?” I asked him.

“He’s too kind to a fault. I don’t like him.”

I frowned. Then banged our table. “Why don’t you like him? Cardo is a very likeable person and too handsome to a fault. If I look at him all day, I don’t think I will have the urge to eat.”

“Then you must really like him.”

“So much that it hurts. And now I can’t find him. I don’t even know what he’s doing with his ex at this moment. I can’t even protect him from himself!!!” I held my head. It was spinning and aching at same time.

“I need to take you home now.”

“No. I’m not going anywhere. I must see Cardo before I move an inch away from this place. I want to kill him.”

“You want to kill him? But you just said that you like him so much that it hurts.”

“So? Can’t I kill someone I love? So many people do it these days, so what’s wrong with me doing same thing.”

“I think we should go now.”

But I was insisting, though I was very much unconscious of some of my attitudes, I still wanted to hold back for some time. I didn’t wanna go home.

I thought drinking takes someone’s frustration and anger away for them but that’s not entirely true. It drowns you into the pain the more you try to take it away. Just like it’s doing to me right now.
Or maybe I didn’t drink enough.

I reached for the bottle but he took it away from me. “No. Not anymore.” He said and tried to lift me up and I pushed him away.

“No! I’m not going anywhere with you! I want Cardo. I want to see Cardo this minute.”

“Yes, we will see Cardo, but we need to go home first.” He tried to touch me again.

“Don’t you dare.” I raised the glass of wine to his face. “I’m gonna smash this on your head if you touch me.”

“Oh. My. God. Now you’re making me wanna call Cardo now. Just hold on, let me get Cardo for you.”

RICARDO’S POV

When I rushed into that restaurant and saw Carmen lying on the couch sleeping, my breathe cut. Anger surged through me at first, I rushed to Diego and grabbed the collar of his shirt.

“What did you do to her?”

He pushed me away. “You must be insane cousin. I just pity this little girl latching on to you, foolish thing.” He mumbled and brushed past me.

I gulped hard. I breathed hard. I went to Carmen. She was wounded and I nearly hit myself when I saw that blood stained handkerchief tying around her right arm. I touched her shoulder and her eyes opened. She was so wasted and I felt so terrible because it was all my fault.

“Carmen. Let me take you home.”

“Cardo.” She called as she heard me speak and then sat up. Then she was frowning. “What are you doing here? Why are you here? Just go away. I don’t want to see you. Where’s Diego?” She stood up staggering, I tried to help her but she pushed me away.

I carried her bag and ran after her, guiding her steps from behind.

“I mean, you have the guts Cardo, you were with Lucia!” She suddenly flinched when we got out of the restaurant.

“Carmen, I can explain.”

“Where were you all day?”

“Carmen, listen.”

“You were with her right? And she was kissing you! She was touching you! I saw it! I saw it Cardo and I swear, I’m gonna kill her when I set my eyes on her. I will make sure she won’t be walking among the land of living the next time I see her with my two eyes.” She said and turned, began staggering in her steps again.

The car door was open but she refused to get in. “Carmen, let me take you home.” But she ignored me. She walked past the car.

“The Alejandrozz suck so much right now!! You need to get out of my sight!!” She yelled still staggering away. I left my car in the hands of my guard to take care of and went after her.

“Carmen careful.” I said as I pulled her away from a fast coming bike. It nearly knocked her down. She pushed me away afterwards.

“Don’t touch me. Never in your life will you touch me. Go to Lucia and touch her as you want.” She said and continued walking.

I was quiet, walking slowly behind her. Guiding her steps until she slowed down and turned to meet my eyes with hers once more.

“Why? Why were you with her?”

“I am sorry Carmen. I’m so sorry.”

She grabbed my hair and began to yank my head all over the place. I thought my head would be pulled out of my neck at the rate she was yanking it.

“Carmen stop.” I held her two hands. “Stop. I know you’re angry but let’s go home first okay? Look at your clothes, you’re so exposed to cold. You might get sick.”

“Now you’re worried if I get sick. Huh! Just say that you don’t wanna be with me, you wanna put me to bed already and run back to Lucia, isn’t it?”

“That’s not true. I wanna be with you. I always wanna be with you Carmen.”

She was mute. I hugged her. Not so tight but enough to lure her into me. “It’s okay Carmen. Everything is fine.” Then I carried her on my back, trudging home slowly.

“Carmen, are you sleeping?”

No answer. Meaning that she have slept off. Yet, she’s so light on my back. “I’m sorry Carmen, I’m sorry that I’m stressing you out at all times.”

I texted my guard about our location and in a matter of minutes, cars stopped infront of me, car doors opened, I walked right into my own car after placing Carmen gently into the car seat.

We headed home, she was mumbling inaudible words. I patted her back and made her lean on me, I cuddled her until we were in my house. The car door was opened for us and I carried her out gently.

I carried her into my room and lay her on the bed, I reached for my first aid kit and set to treat her wound, she stirred each time I applied penicillin on the little cut on her arm. I blew on it severally and then I covered it up with a plaster.

I wanted to change her clothes but she might wake up, I didn’t want her to. I stayed beside her all through the whole night. Holding her arm in mine and rubbing it. Blowing air on it and then placing her palm on my cheek.

Carmen. A girl that came into my life like a wind and have stuck to me, in as much as she wears me out, I love having her around and everything about her matters so much to me. I want to protect her. I want to, but I mess it all up and make her worry so much, everytime!

I dressed the duvet which covered her, while she stirred. “Cardo.” She mumbled half sleeping and half awake.

“I’m here.”

“Cardo.” She called again.

I got into the bed and snuggled her closer to myself. “I’m here. You need to stop worrying now and get a good sleep.” I whispered into her hair. I pecked her forehead and she held onto me. She didn’t wanna let go.

“Cardo, please don’t let me go. Stop making my heart ache all the time.”

“I will stop doing that. I promise.” I said and she opened her eyes, she didn’t blink, she just stared at my eyes. Then she brushed my brows with her fingers.

“I h@të you so much Cardo. You made me look like a complete fool today.”

“I’m sorry. Do you want me to kiss you? Maybe it will make it all go away.”

“Don’t kiss me. Don’t you dare.”

“Here, I can go naked for you.” I said sitting up on the bed and began to pull of my shirt.

“Don’t do it. I’m not in the mood for you.” She sat up on the bed. “Take me home. I want to leave this place.”

“Carmen.” She was already off the bed and managing her steps to the door. “Carmen, I can take you home tomorrow, it’s already late.”

“I just want to go home. I don’t want to be with you tonight.”

“Carmen.” I held her arm. “At least, let me show you the wedding dress.” I said trying to lure her to stay back.

“I don’t need the wedding dress. Throw it out.”

Carmen.

She’s mean!

Throw it out? I suffered so hard to make the dress.

I opened my mouth to speak when Victoria suddenly bursted into the room. I don’t know if she didn’t see Carmen, but she totally ghosted her as she walked up to me ranting.

“What was that about?”She asked fuming angrily.

“What?” I was confused.

“This!!” She showed me her phone.

THE CEO SPOTTED ON THE MAIN STREET CARRYING A LITTLE GIRL ON HIS BACK.

MR. RICARDO MADE A PUBLIC APPEARANCE TONIGHT WITH THE SAME GIRL HE WAS SEEN WITH AT THE POLICIÁ FEW DAYS AGO

WHY IS THE FOOLISH CEO SHOWING OFF HIMSELF TO THE PUBLIC THESE DAYS?

WHO IS THE LITTLE GIRL? IS SHE AN ALEJANDRO?

“And what’s wrong with it? I went to fetch Carmen.” I said eyeing Carmen who still stood by the door, watching us and maybe getting angry because Victoria ignored her presence in the room.

“You went to fetch Carmen. And this is why all these is showing up online? Oh my gosh Ricardo!
I thought you were coming back to your senses this evening, but I was wrong. You’re getting worse.”

“What’s wrong with me going out to fetch my wife?”

“She’s not your wife!!!”

“Then what am I? A stick? A stone?” Carmen chipped in. She was fully awake now. I guess she’s no longer feeling drowsy.

Victoria still tried to ignore her but she was already standing by my side, crossing her arms beneath her chest, she was glaring daggers at Victoria.

“You even go to a restaurant to drink Carmen. At your age, aren’t you supposed to be a responsible woman? You’re getting married soon!!
Let me put it this way, your wedding is in less than 72 hours already and you still act like a child? If you’re going to be my brother’s wife, must you bring bad luck for him at all times.”

“Victoria, I won’t have you talk to my wife like that! And it’s high time you start staying out of my affairs.” I stepped in.

“You’re talking back at me Ricardo?”

“Yes! Yes!!! Why is it that everything I do in this house is wrong! Why? Why can’t y’all leave me alone to live my life the way I want it. Leave Carmen alone. Ella es mi esposa. (She’s my wife!)”

And Victoria slapped me. Right infront of Carmen.

“What? Did you just slap him?” Carmen asked as she stepped forward.

“And what are you gonna do? He’s my brother and I have the rights to put his tongue in its place if he yaps too much.”

Carmen slapped her too. Over and over again. Even before I could hold her, she already have Victoria sprawling on the floor. She was kicking her and then she was on top of her.

“Are you insane? So you’re the one who sent the photos to me? Huh!” She was hitting her again.

Victoria was whimpering but she never stopped.
Victoria was screaming but she wasn’t done yet. “I got you! I have been dying to beat you and you’re so unlucky tonight because this is the beating I would’ve given to someone else and it accidentally landed on you.” She hit her severally.

“Carmen.” I began to pull her away. But she was struggling to stay back. To still beat her. “Carmen stop!”

“I won’t stop! She’s crazy! How can she slap you in my presence. Is she okay?” She was on top of her.
Soon, my door flung open, my parents rushed in followed by my two sisters and Amélie and her dog.

“What’s happening?” Louisa asked no one in particular.

“Ricardo! Aren’t you gonna take your mad dog away from my little sister!!” Bernadette screamed while I tried my best to take Carmen off Victoria’s skin. In the process, Carmen bit my arm.

Arrrgghh!!! And I pulled back inspecting my flesh and her teeth marks was on my skin. And it hurts like hell.

“Mom, help me!!” Victoria was crying. “She’s gonna kill me.” She was hitting her everywhere.

“Where are the guards!!!” Louisa yelled out loudly and three guards ran in.

“Don’t touch her. I can handle her myself.” I warned the guards as they stepped closer to us.

“Then do something fast, imbécil
(moron!!)” Bernadette yelled at me.

“Carmen.” My father called and her hand which was in the air, ready to land a heavy slap on Victoria’s body, became still.

“Come. It’s okay. Come to me now.” My father said softly and she went calm. She was growing calmer and calmer. “It’s alright, come to me, okay?”

Carmen left Victoria, eyed me as she brushed past me and went to my father’s side.

“It’s okay.” He patted Carmen’s shoulders as he led her away.

“Dad!” Bernadette called but he ignored everyone. “Dad! You’re choosing that witch over your own daughter?”

“Fuçk you Bernadette!!” Carmen screamed giving her a finger. “Fuçk your @$$ Bîtch!!!”

“Did you hear that?”

“Shut up Bîtch!!!”
