CHAPTER FORTY SIX
RICARDO’S POV
Work. Work. I can’t believe I had to leave Carmen all alone at home simply because of all this Sh|t which my secretaries can’t sort out by themselves!!
Fuçk! “What’s the problem now? Why do I have to work on a Sunday?”
“Sir.” Griffin started and I turned to face him. “Your sister Bernadette, wants a meeting with you.”
“A meeting with me? On a Sunday?? And you phoned me because of that.”
I thought I saw her on housewarming party? Didn’t she have something to say then? Why do they always have something to say after it’s already decided.
I can’t do anything for them. Not when I’m thriving so hard to keep pushing this company forward.
“It’s urgent.” The other secretary whose name I don’t always seem to remember spoke. I ignored him.
“How urgent is it?” I asked Griffin.
“Very.”
“Why do I have to meet her?”
“You have to meet her. We’re taking you there now.”
“Tell me what’s going on,” I demanded, my voice betraying my urgency and agitation.
They both sighed, even as Mando tugged at Griffin’s side, he had to hand over some papers to me and I scrolled through it.
“What am I supposed to do with all this?” I groaned, my tone reflecting my bewilderment and exasperation as I perused the pile of paperwork.
“Bernadette needs you to sign that.”
“Sign what?!!!”
This?? Why would I want to do that? She wants to own a 2% of the company share when she already has 10%, how she got that number still marvels me.
I can’t let out another 2% to her!!!
“That’s why you need to meet her.”
“Why would I?”
“Everyone have signed it, including your father.”
My father? I brought out my phone to call him, why would he do such a thing without telling me? When did they plan all this without telling me? They were at my housewarming party and__this?!!
I gritted my teeth, clenched my fist staring at my phone. “Please leave – I need to speak to my father alone,” I said firmly, my tone brooking no argument.
“You’ve got things to attend to. You know we’re travelling to France on Tuesday.”
“And I also said leave, this is a private conversation,” I said resolutely, my eyes fixed on the door as I waited for them to leave.
They reluctantly left the room. The moment they were gone, I picked up the phone and dialed my father’s number. The dial tone sounded in my ear as I waited for him to answer.
“Father.”
“Son, how are you doing? Happy Sunday. How’s your wife, Carmen? Hope you taking good care of her?”
“Father, this is not why I phoned you.” I stood up from my seat and began to pace around the office.
“Okay, what’s the problem?”
It’s so absurd to hear him asking me this question. They know what they did. I mean, he knows what he did so why asking me this question, how am I supposed to answer this?
“Father, all of you signed for Bernadette’s two percent share when she already has 10!!”
“Yes we did.”
The ‘yes’ sounded so unbelievable in my ears.
“Yes?? Are you all in on this because I don’t get it at all! I don’t understand any of this, Dad. Why would you do this?” I spoke into the phone, my voice shaking with emotion. I paced around my office, running a hand through my hair as I struggled to process everything. The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. I waited, hoping for an explanation that would make it all make sense. But no response came.
“Dad???”
“Ricardo, you can’t face Bernadette.”His response finally came, and like a thunderstorm, it sounded heavily in my ears. And I was deeply shaken by those words. In as much as I was trying to get what this meant, I was still infuriated by it.
“What do you mean by that?” I had stopped pacing around, stopping digging my hands into my hair, I was standing in the middle of my office, wondering why the office is twice larger in my eyes now.
“Because you have Carmen. You can’t fight Bernadette when you have Carmen.”
“Can you just__” I stopped as I tried to fight back every emoticons blinding my thoughts and words right now. “Can you just tell me__tell me what you mean by those nonsense!!!”
“Ricardo language!!!”
“But I don’t get it! I can’t face Bernadette, what’s that supposed to mean?”
“You have to sign it.”
“I won’t.”
“Then she’s gonna make your marriage to Carmen a public thing.”
“I’m fine with it. I wasn’t gonna hide away from it forever. I’m not even hiding or shying away from it.”
“Are you even thinking right now Ricardo. Get your arse together and come meet me at home!!” And he hung up.
And my head wanted to explode. “Uuuugghh!!” I slammed the table. I tried to breathe but the anger in my throat was so big. It could swallow me up.
I’m getting everything under control, at least I’m trying my best, and everyone is hell bent on putting me apart. Can’t I be happy? What’s the problem? What’s everyone’s problem?
I heard a knock on the door. “Don’t come in!!” I yelled but the door opened against my order, I turned to lash at the person only to see Bernadette standing in her blue strapless flowing gown which had a slit at one side and high heeled shoes, she had herself all dolled up smiling mischievously as she came towards me.
The witch. She won’t let me be for real. What she tends to achieve in all this, is what I don’t get.
“Since you won’t go on a date with me, I decided to come here myself.”
“I don’t want to see you,” I said curtly, pushing past her as I made my way to the door. The words were sharp and cold, reflecting the anger and disappointment I felt. I didn’t want to face her right now – I just wanted to escape.
“Have you signed the papers?” Her voice stopped me in my tracks, causing me to turn back towards her. “Don’t take too long – my patience is wearing thin.” The words were firm and direct, leaving no room for negotiation. The tension in the air was almost suffocating.
What does she feel like when she acts so bossy and wicked sometimes??
“Why would I sign it?” I was coming towards her.
“Because you have no choice. You have to do it fast and announce to your board members, which you have already bought over with your foolishness before you take a trip to your France!!”
“And you even spy on me too?”
She snorted. “Why won’t I spy on you? You pretend to be hard when you’re not hard to read at all. You’re as predictable like I always knew you.”
“You were at my house party, though uninvited and yet, you had this intention locked up inside you without saying anything!!”
“Say anything? When you started misbehaving, putting all of us out of jobs, out of work and making a caricature of us on social media, did you think it through with anyone? What’s so hard about signing the papers? It’s just 2% compared to what you own in the company Ri_car_do.” She spelt out.
“I don’t have to answer to you,” I said, my voice rising in anger. “You can’t tell me what to do with my life!”
“Maybe not, but your actions have consequences, and those consequences affect more than just you,” she said, her voice calm and collected. “You should’ve thought about it before planning on doing anything rash.”
“You’re just trying to control me!” I spat out, my hands balling into fists at my sides.
“Control you?” She scoffed. “Can you even be controlled? I wish I can control you Ricardo and if this is the only way I’m going to achieve that, I’d be so happy to put you on a leash.”
“I won’t sign it.” I finalized. “Do what you want. I don’t care.” I said.
“If you don’t cooperate, I can’t promise that your wife, Carmen, will be safe,” she said, her words a thinly-veiled threat. “You know what I’m capable of.”
I swallowed hard, the fear rising in my throat. I knew she wasn’t bluffing, and my wife’s safety was at stake. I felt like I was backed into a corner, with no way out.
But still, I didn’t let that bother me so much. “Carmen is going to be fine. I won’t sign it.” I maintained my ground.
“Then I will make your marriage public. Do you know what it means when this marriage goes public?” She began to pull towards me until she grabbed the collar of my shirt, “The whole world are gonna troll her, no where will be safe for her, she can’t run around and play and fight like she wants, that means she’s officially assuming the role of the lady of Alejandrozz and that’s not all.” She caressed my chest giggling, making my breathe hitch at my throat.
“Carmen will be suffocated. Our stock prices might be at high risk likewise Sebastian’s, learning that you got married to a child might be too hard for anyone to bear. Especially on Carmen, she won’t be able breathe, eat, sleep or act as she wants!! She’s needed for every official meeting, and as much as I know, she’s not so learned. Don’t you get that? Or you still want me to say more?”
Defeaning silence, I wanted to stop her from breathing that instant. “Why do you need a share? Why are you getting greedier, each passing minute and each passing day?”
“That’s none of your business? Are you gonna sign the contract now or you’re not going to sign it? Keep things simple little bro, let’s not make a fool of ourselves, okay?” She patted my shoulder and strolled out of the office.
God d@mn it!
What have I done? What the hell have I just done?
I phoned Griffin immediately. “Get my car ready, I need to go see my dad.”
“Yes sir.”
“And that trip to France, postpone it till Friday.”
“I’ve prolonged it long enough__”
“Do as I say, okay?” I hung up and stormed out of the office, I wanted to catch up with Bernadette who just left. I have things to say. I have a lot of things in my mind which I haven’t bared to her. She can’t ride me. They can’t ride me!
“Bernadette!!” I finally caught up with her. She halted in her tracks, she was about getting into her car. I breathed hard.
She was smiling mischievously, “Yes, little bro.”
“I’m still not going to sign it. Do what you want to do. I will protect Carmen in every way I can.”
Her mood changed immediately, from a smiling face to that of deep anger. “You’re so hellbent in putting your little wife in danger, aren’t you?”
My heart was beating rapidly. The fact that I have to make this choice knowing how badly it will affect Carmen, killed me so badly. But I have no choice!! I can’t let her have that share! Soon, she will come back asking for more. And more!!! I need to stop it here now. That thing she’s using as a weakness, I gaht to liquidate it now. So that she can not use it against me in the future, not ever!
She got into her car spewing nonsense and drove off.
I turned to Mando who was behind me. “I need maximum security guards employed to protect Carmen.”
“Yes sir.”
“First of all, find out where she is.”
“Yes sir.”
I beckoned to Griffin and he followed me, my car was already ready and open, waiting for me to get in.
I entered the car and the car closed, soon, I was driving to meet my father.
CARMEN’S POV
“Eddie??” I called repeatedly as he kept hugging me without letting go.
Is he okay? I gave him a slight shove but he held on.
It wasn’t funny anymore. “Eddie, let go of me,” I said, my voice steady and firm. He still held onto me tightly, but I was determined to break free. I pushed against him with all my strength, and he finally relented, releasing his grip. “What’s the matter with you?” I demanded, my eyes flashing with anger.
“Are you okay? Why would you hold me like that?”
“Uh…” He was still lost, what he’s thinking, I don’t know but it’s eating him up so badly, it was shown on his face.
I palmed his cheeks and he nearly froze staring at me.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I just__”
“Hey!!! Carmen and Edgar!!” Alvaro appeared and our attention shifted towards him.
I turned to wave at him. “Hey Alvaro, I heard you were throwing a party.” I ran into his arms.
“There you go! As bubbly and lively as ever.” He pecked my cheeks while I laughed.
“Let’s get in! I don’t know what’s wrong with Edgar, he’s acting up. ” I said and went in. Mario, John and Dre were sitting down so comfortably and playing video games when I got in.
“Hey guys!!” I hollered and they turned to look at me. Mario smiled briefly but soon faced the game, his joystick making the loudest sound as he tried to win over Dre.
John only paid little attention. And the rest of his attention, on his phone. “Hey what’s up? Didn’t know you gonna show up. Did you come with Eddie or you came alone?”
“I came with Eddie.”
“You shouldn’t have asked that John, there’s no way she would be here without Eddie.” Mario said.
I settled down beside John trying to catch a glimpse of what they’re playing.
“Yeah that’s true. They’re always together right? Are they dating?” Dre asked, busy with his joystick while I scoffed.
“Why would you think that?” I asked nudging his shoulder and messing with his joystick.
“Hey stop troublemaker! I don’t want your problems right now.” He warned but I didn’t stop. “Carmen stop!”
“I wanna play.”
“When we’re done, you will play.” He said but I’m not gonna wait.
“No, I wanna play right now.”
“Come on Carmen, where’s Eddie? Please come take your girl outta here. She’s causing trouble again!” He yelled and that’s when Alvaro and Eddie came in.
“What’s going on? John, what’s happening?” Alvaro was asking as he came towards us.
“She wants to play and she won’t wait.”John reported me, not like I care. I snatched the joystick away from him and pushed him away. I sat close to Mario watching the video game.
“Okay, I’m gonna smash all your men Mario. A punishment for being a grumpy.” I said and started playing.
“A grumpy?” He eyed me while I matched his feet.
“Ouch!!” And Walla! I was already leading in the game. “Ouch!! That hurts!!” I matched him again and he winced in pain, before he could recover, I was already leading in the game. All his players were almost done for.
“And she’s cheating again!!” He tried to hit me but stopped when he looked at Edgar.
“You wanna hit me?” I dropped the joystick, I had won! I always win. In all my games, I always win and that’s because I’m full of strategies. Carmen girlie.
“Eddie, get her outta here.”
“Eddie is not taking me anywhere, I came here for a party and I’m not leaving until the party is over.”
“What party?” Alvaro asked and I turned to look at Eddie.
“Eddie told me there’s a party happening at your place and that’s why I came.”
“But there’s no party.” Dre replied, all eyes on Edgar.
“Uh…”
My phone began to ring. “Wait, hold on.” I checked my phone. Sh|t! Cardo is calling me!!! Is he back home already? So soon? That can’t be!!
I sprang up from my seat and rushed out immediately.
“Cardo,” I said, my voice trembling with fear. “Where are you?” I had the guts to ask.
“Where I am doesn’t matter,” he replied, his voice like ice. “What matters is where you are!!” The rage in his voice made my legs waver. I almost fell.
I could feel my heart racing, my palms sweating. I was terrified of how he might react next, and I knew I had to be careful with my words. “I… I just… I went out with Edgar,” I stammered, my voice shaking.
“You what??!!”
I composed my self. “I couldn’t stay alone at home and I had to go hang out with Eddie.” I replied trying not to sound affected by how he’s feeling right now.
“But we promised no Edgar, didn’t we?”
“Well__” I shrugged. “He’s my friend and I can’t take that away from myself!”
“Carmen, where are you? I will come take you myself!”
“You don’t have to. I’m coming back myself.”
I hung up feeling so terrible. What just happened? What did I just do? Ah Fuçk!
Taking another step forward, I heard Eddie’s voice behind me.
“You leaving already?”
I turned and nodded towards him. “Yeah, I gotta go. Cardo is so angry with me right now.”
He stepped closer and then stopped halfway. “Can’t you stay for a while.”
“What?”
“Don’t go.”
“What?”
What’s he saying??
