CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR
LUCIA’S POV
Nightmares upon nightmares since I met Carmen. I stayed curled up in my bed all day unable to move, I tried to sleep but sleep evaded me. I can’t even close them. I’m getting sick before I can even know it. Carmen, that little witch scared me to my bones.
Her words kept echoing in my head. Messing with my soul, my bones, I can’t even feel myself anymore. Her slap, grabbing my hair isn’t my problem, the fact that I had to give in to her so easily because of a little torture is what scares me the most.
Little witch. What did she have planned? What if I decide not to do as she wanted? Will she really post the video? I shuddered, feeling a sense of dread creep over me. I tried to reason with myself, to reassure myself that she was just making empty bluffs inorder to make me talk when she wouldn’t actually do anything like that. But I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that was growing inside me.
I know Carmen, from the few times I’ve known her, she’s never someone to make empty threats, she can torture anyone who can cause harm to her, I know her that well and I wish I never crossed her again. If only I’ve surrendered earlier, if only I gave in to the fact that she’s bigger and stronger than me, all these won’t have been playing out infront of me.
I buried my head in my hands, trying to block out the thoughts that were running through my mind. I had to calm down.
I took a deep breath, focusing on my breathing, trying to relax my body. In and out, in and out. I kept repeating the mantra to myself, trying to clear my mind. But it was difficult. The more I tried to relax, the more my mind raced. What if she really was planning something terrible? What if she was going to hurt me, or worse? Maybe have someone kidnap me and torture me until I’m at the verge of death!
Carmen can do it! If she can barge into my house even with all securities, then there’s nothing Carmen cannot do, I just wish Bernadette can stop underestimating her! I was a fool to be used by that man who really knew that Carmen was too big for him.
Carmen is bigger than anyone, she’s small but she doesn’t rely on that, with the backing of Ricardo, she can move around the world and come back and still be Carmen.
Lucia! You’ve made the biggest mistake of your life and it’s really telling on you. I felt myself spiraling, the fear and anxiety building up inside me.
And then, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jumped, startled by the sudden contact. I turned to see George looking at me with concern.
“You’re having a panic attack,” he said, his voice soft and gentle. “Just breathe, okay? Breathe with me.” He demonstrated, breathing in and out slowly. I tried to follow his lead, to match my breathing to his. It was difficult, but slowly I started to feel myself calming down. The tightness in my chest began to ease, and my heart rate began to slow.
After a few minutes, I felt myself beginning to relax. The anxiety that had been gripping me began to loosen its hold. “Thank you,” I said, my voice shaky but calm.
George sat down next to me, his hand still on my shoulder. “It’s okay,” he said, giving me a small smile. “You’re going through a lot, it’s only natural that you would feel overwhelmed sometimes. But you’re strong, and you can get through this.”
I let out a small sigh, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over me but on a second thought, there’s nothing I can get over, not now. “George, I should’ve listened to you and left Ricardo.” I felt hot tears streaming down my face.
“Don’t blame yourself, Lucia,” George said, his voice gentle. “You were trying to do what you thought was right, and you were trying to be strong. You can’t beat yourself up for that.” He reached out and wiped the tears from my face, his touch soft and comforting. “I’m not saying it was the right decision, but you made it with the best of intentions. And we can still figure this out.”
“I don’t know how,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “I feel so helpless, like I’ve just made everything worse.”
“You don’t even know what I did, do you?” I continued still not wanting to succvmb entirely into his words. “I poisoned Carmen, I wanted to kill her in order to win Ricardo for myself.”
“Lucia__” George’s eyes widened in shock. “What?” he said, his voice filled with disbelief. “You poisoned the little Carmen? Why? What happened?” He looked at me, his expression a mixture of confusion and concern. “I know you must have had a reason, but it’s hard to imagine you doing something like that. Please, tell me what’s going on.”
“I don’t know where to start,” I said, my voice shaking. “It’s a long story, and it’s not easy to explain. I feel so ashamed talking about this but__ my career as an actress is done for. She completely wants to ruin me for messing with her.”
“Oh Lucia.”
“It’s more than that,” I said, my eyes filling with tears and dropping. “It’s not just about my career, it’s about everything. She wants to make sure that I’m completely, ruined. And I know it’s my own fault, I shouldn’t have let my jealousy get the best of me. I should’ve let Ricardo go.” I buried my face in my hands, overwhelmed by the weight of my emotions. “What am I going to do?”
“Hey, don’t cry,” George said, his voice soothing. “We’ll figure this out.”
“There’s nothing to figure out, don’t you get it? She needs to face the press before three days expires else__she’s gonna post the video she made of me.”
“A video??”
I nodded feeling so ashamed and embarrassed at the same time. “Yeah, she was here and she threatened me, she did a video footage of the whole truth, there’s no way to escape.”
“Sh|t!” He sighed out, giving me an unbelievable gaze, “how did this happen?”
“I was fooled.” I said shamefully and felt so choked up.
“Why did you never tell me about this?”
“I was scared, then I was so enraged, I was confused, I was__” the words stuck in my throat, “But that family made me do it. They took advantage of my greed and jealousy, they made me poison Carmen.”
Silence fell between us, and my thoughts ran far and wide, trying to figure out what to do, bringing myself to face the world is equivalent to saying a capital NO to my career for life. Who will love a murderer.
“I can’t believe I almost became murderer George.”
He heaved. “You don’t have to go down alone,” he said, “you know that you didn’t do this all by yourself, you can bring everyone down with you.”
“They will kill me! Bernadette will kill me the moment I open my mouth and say anything about what happened”
“Did you just say Bernadette??”
“Yeah, she’s in on this too__”
“Fuçk! Lucia, you’re not a type to make costly mistakes like this. Ricardo is surely gonna tear you apart when he gets a wind of this.”
“It’s not Ricardo, it’s Carmen. She don’t want to show mercy and I can’t even ask for it.”
“Lucia, I don’t know what you were thinking and how things got this far but__” he took in a deep breathe, “You need to do as Carmen wants, it’s gonna help you too. You need to lift a heavy weight off your life and you need to learn to embrace yourself more now.”
“So what are you saying?”
“Face the world.”
“George__”
He snapped putting his arm on mine. “I will help you, okay? You can’t run away from this, anything you do other than facing your problem will ruin things the more.” He stared at me with a lot of concern, trying to make me see reasons with what he’s saying, “the only thing you can do right now for yourself is to bring Bernadette to book, everyone in this with you, they should not know peace.”
I knew he was right. I couldn’t keep running away from this, I had to face it head on. I just hoped that I would be strong enough to do it. “I’m scared,” I admitted, my voice breaking. “I don’t know if I can do this.”
He took my hand in his, his eyes full of concern. “It’s okay to be scared,” he said, his voice soft and reassuring. “But you’re not alone. I’ll be with you every step of the way. And you’re stronger than you think.
“You’ve faced so much in your life, and you’ve always come out stronger on the other side,” he continued. “You’ve overcome so much, you’re a fighter. And I know you can get through this too.” I felt a wave of emotion wash over me at his words, a mixture of gratitude and hope. “Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“You don’t need to thank me,” he said, a soft smile on his lips. “You would do the same for me, I know you would.
RICARDO’S POV
We got out of the car and I held her hand as we maneuver our way through the gridlocks, I held her hand tighter for her safety not minding the few bodyguards who are following us closely behind.
After twenty minutes of walking, we came out to a clear road and I sighed, turned to look at her and ready to ask her why she suggested we walk.
“Don’t you think something is cooking for us?” She replied my question with a question, confusing me, “I sense something, like someone’s doom is near.”
Someone’s doom?
I scoffed. When did she become a fortune teller or is it because she’s pregnant? Is she trying to make me feel better right now? This is not a time to joke around, I know we did the right thing by walking, at least, we won’t have gotten out of the situation if she didn’t make that decision but then, what’s the way forward? I’m late for my father’s funeral as the head of the house!!
“Cardo?”
“Hmmm.”
“Can you make a call right now and cancel the funeral?”
“Carmen.”
“You asked for a plan and this is it! Uncle Lucas set us up here, making sure that we won’t have to move away from this place, I don’t know what he had in mind when he suggested this but__ we need to make a faster move by canceling the funeral, just one call from you and it’s off.”
“Carmen do you know how many people who are coming over for this great occasion, it’s my late father we’re talking about!”
“Are we going to argue about this too? Come to think of it, why didn’t you perform an autopsy?”
“It’s clear that due to fire, he died, I was there and I watched him die infront of me.”
“Who started the fire?”
“I’m still working on that Carmen.”
She heaved, rolled her eyes at me and then snatched my phone from my pocket, “Make the call, the funeral is off, explanations can be done later but for now, something more crucial should be dealt with. We need to lay your father to rest after we’re done with bringing justice to what ever happened to him.”
I was a little taken aback by her sudden intensity, but I knew she was right. We couldn’t ignore the fact that there were bigger things at stake here, and we had to focus on the most important things first. “Okay,” I said, taking the phone from her. “I’ll make the call.” I took a deep breath, trying to quell my nerves. “You sure about this?”
“Yes,” she said, her voice resolute. “Trust me.”
I dialed the number for the funeral home, and after a few rings, a woman answered. “Hello, this is the funeral home, how may I help you?” she said, her voice efficient and professional.
“Hi, I’m calling to cancel a funeral,” I said, my voice a little shaky. “It’s for my father, Mr. Alejandrozz.”
“I’m so sorry to hear that,” the woman said, her tone sympathetic. “Can I ask why you’re canceling the funeral?”
“There are some”…complications,” I finished, hesitating slightly. “I just want to cancel it.” I said and then hung up. Eyeing Carmen who was nodding her head at me.
If only she knows that a lot is at stake here, I’m really gonna get chewed, my mom will feel more heartbroken because of this but I’m betting on Carmen’s speculations, I’m trusting her judgement on this and doing as she wanted.
I dialed Griffin’s number immediately. “Sir, I haven’t been able to reach you for a while now, what happened? Why are you not here yet, somebody just phoned me to say that you’re canceling the funeral? what’s going on? Is something up? Should I come over” Griffin won’t stop with his questions.
“Tell my family that the funeral is off and they should go home.” I said simply.
“What? Sir? Why? They’re here, waiting for you, getting all aggressive, angry and you want the funeral to be called off!”
“Just do as I say. Just do as I say!” I repeated hating myself for raising my voice at him when all he wanted was an answer for my actions.
But I don’t quite get it too, why I have to call off the funeral, what Carmen really have in mind, her plan but then, I have to do it. Let’s get this all cleaned up so I can go back to a normal life where I will have absolute peace and enjoy my marriage like I’ve always wanted from the beginning.
“Yes sir, I will do as you say.” He sighed, “That means I should call the morticians to let your father be for now.”
I bit my lower lips. “Yes, they should let him be.”
“And I need to explain to the press about the sudden change in everything.”
“Mr. Griffin, tell the press what you feel you can tell them and leave the rest okay?” I breathed out, “Ask Mando to get me a car, I’m stranded on the road right now.”
“Sure, I will do that.”
“Okay, I will text you the address, but then__” I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me at her kindness. “Thank you,”
“Is there anything else I can help you with?” He asked, still sounding genuinely concerned. “I know that this must be very difficult for you, and I just want to make sure that I can do anything to help you.”
I thought for a moment, trying to decide what to say. “Actually, there is one more thing,” I said, my voice hesitant. “My father’s will is in his office at his company, but I don’t want to appear publicly infront of people right now. But I need you to get that will for me.”
Who knows if they know about the will. I need to get it fast before they get their hands on it. Especially Bernadette, she might be looking for it by now or maybe on her way to get the will and when she does, she can get the will manipulated within seconds.
What was I thinking all these time that I totally forgot about the will?
“I need you to get that will for me.”I repeated with so much emphasis on the WILL.
“Yes! I get it now! I am seeing what’s happening! It’s all making sense in my head right now.” Carmen suddenly bursted out after saying silent all these time.
“What?”
“The will!!!”
“What happened to it?” I asked getting startled because of the way she shouted.
She came close, her eyes burning with desperateness, she grabbed my shirt, “Cardo, Lucas killed your father because of the will!! He set fire at the company because of the will!!”
“What?”
I don’t understand.
She snatched the phone from me. “Hello Griffin,”
“Yes??”
“Get a car!!” She called out the address for him. “Now!!”
“Carmen what’s going on?” I asked as she moved frantically, getting so worked up while I’m still trying to understand what exactly is going on.
“Cardo, you don’t understand!” Carmen said, her voice urgent. “Griffin has to get here as soon as possible, he has to get us out of here!”
I was beginning to get seriously concerned now. I tried to remain calm and collected, even though I was starting to feel a bit panicked myself. “Carmen, please try to explain what’s going on.”
“Lucas has the will!!! He blocked us out here because he’s got the will!!” She was yelling, “That bastard is going to declare himself the owner of that company soon!!!”
“What!!!” I was shocked to the marrow.
“Your father asked you to sign off the company because he might have been threatened by him,” Carmen continued, her eyes wide. “That’s why he asked you to do away with the company, to protect you. He knew that Lucas would do anything to get what he wanted, and he didn’t want you to get caught up in it.”
“But why?” I asked, still reeling from the revelation. “I mean, I know Lucas has always been ambitious, quiet, maybe dubious as you put it, but to go so far as to kill my father?” I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
She shook terribly. “Lucas is taking that company away!!! We have to get it back!! Get your head together Cardo!! We need to move!!”
“Carmen.”
“This is not the time to be emotional Cardo, he’s doing something out there and we got to stop him!!”
Uncle Lucas… I clenched my fist, my face br!m-mln with utmost anger…
