CHAPTER SIXTY NINE

CARMEN’S POV

Cardo is taking long to come back, I could see his tall figure as he stood by the door which was ajar, but he wasn’t speaking or maybe I can’t hear him since he’s a little bit far away from me.

“Cardo,” I called his name but no answer, “Cardo,” I repeated but he wasn’t answering so I had to go over to where he is. Almost reaching him, I heard his voice.

“Don’t come close.” He said urgently and my legs froze immediately, especially when my eyes met Bernadette’s, she was pointing a gun to Cardo’s head.

My insides melted immediately. “Cardo,” I said again, this time my voice was shaky with fear. “What’s going on?”

“It’s fine,” he said, his voice calm but his body was tense. “Everything is fine. Don’t panic, okay?”

I didn’t know what to do, I couldn’t move. Bernadette’s eyes were cold, devoid of any emotion. Her hand was steady as she held the gun to Cardo’s head. I felt sick to my stomach, my body was shaking with fear.

I’ve never been this scared in my life, especially with a gun on Cardo’s head. It’s not a feeling I can get used to or something I really wish to happen to Cardo all the time.

I imagined Cardo dropping lifeless infront of me, it’s same thing as taking my own life and dying with him.

And she was pushing herself in while Cardo kept stepping back for her to get in. Cardo gripped my hand as I was almost freaking out.

“Bernadette,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Please, don’t do this. I know you’re upset, but this isn’t the answer. Just put the gun down, and we can talk about this.”

“I’m not upset,” she said, her voice eerily calm. “I’m doing what needs to be done. Your husband took something that belongs to me, and I’m taking him in exchange. It’s a fair trade, don’t you think?”

I could barely hear myself, “We can talk this out.”

“I’m done talking this out Carmen, you’re the genesis of everything and I should be pointing a gun to your head but no, I want him. It’s enough to put you on a leash.”

“Bernadette,” Cardo tried to fight off the gun but she suddenly directed the gun at me leaving me panicking and freezing Cardo in his tracks.

Then she chuckled. “You both can’t fight me, I don’t see how you can fight me. Not when both of you are each other’s weakness.”

I was very scared. A gun have never been pointed to my face since I was born.

“I mean, I keep wondering why this little thing have been shaking this family up for the past eight months, I wonder why you had to shake us up when you’re barely nineteen! You’re eighteen to be exact. I wonder what your father is gonna do when we take you home dead.”

I gripped my clothes, “You’re scaring her, can’t you see? Point that gun at me instead of at her.” Cardo said but she scoffed.

“Hell no, I thought she’s such a brave kid. I thought she can act up even in front of a gun.”

Cardo made sure to grip my hand and squeeze tight, to let me not to freak out.

Cardo tensed, but he didn’t make a move. I could see the conflict in his eyes, the desire to act, to do something to stop this. But he didn’t want to risk my safety. He knew that she was right – we were each other’s weakness. And she was using that against us.

I tried to think of a way out of this, but my mind was blank. I felt completely powerless.

“Cardo,” I said, my voice trembling. “What should we do?”

“Just stay calm,” he said, his grip on my hand tightening. “Don’t say anything, okay? Just stay calm.”

“But she has a gun!” I said, my voice getting louder despite my best efforts to keep it low. “She could hurt me or even you!”

“I know,” he said, his eyes locked on mine. “But if you stay calm, it’ll be okay. I promise.”

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. Bernadette had now sat down on the couch, crossing her legs while pointing the gun at us.

She looked at me, and I shuddered. “So this is how frozen you get at the sight of a gun??” she asked, her voice sounding amused.

As if there’s no one who doesn’t get powerless at the sight of a gun, more is even at stake because I’m not the only one here, my baby and Cardo. A gun at Cardo and I’m ready to exchange my life for him.

Where the heck are all the guards in the house? How did she get here without them knowing about it?

“I have to say, I’m not impressed by the two of you” Bernadette continued.

“Shut up, Bernadette,” Cardo said, his voice hard. “You’re not going to get what you want. Let’s just talk about this.”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” she said, her eyes narrowed.

“Carmen,” she said, turning to me. “I’m sorry that you got caught up in this, but you see, it’s out of my control. This is something your husband started, and now he has to pay the price.”

I shook my head. “You can’t do this,” I said. “It’s not right.”

“You don’t understand,” she said, her voice turning cold. “You have no idea what he did to me. This is justice.”

“How is it justice?? You killed father!!” Cardo attacked, “Because of your reckless actions with Uncle Lucas, you killed your father?! Have you no shame at all?”

“If only father did things in the right way, we won’t have come to h@të each other like this!!” She yelled back spranging up from the seat.

“You call this h@të? That’s why you have been sleeping with Uncle Lucas?! Have you no shame? You’re my elder sister but I’m still ashamed to look at you.”

Her hand gripped the gun tighter, Cardo have touched her softest spots. “It’s all because of you!!! You never let me be__”

“Let you become what?” Cardo snapped at her again. “You’re a monster Bernadette, you’ve become someone you shouldn’t be. You were never sweet to me since I was young but that was preferable to the person you’ve become!!”

“I’m a monster and I’m gonna do what monsters do__” she conked the gun and I felt my legs clanking together. “I’m gonna be less human and put a stop to this endless pain in my heart.”

And she fired the gun!!!

“Ugh!!!” That was the sound I heard without looking, my eyes were closed, my hands on my ears and I felt my heart tightening against my chest, I closed my ears just like I always do when things get to this point.

But I prayed silently, since the gun didn’t shoot me, let it not be Cardo, I could still feel his presence around me, his hands gripping my waist but his steady breathes made my heart thump faster. I prayed silently to God.

Save me. Save my Cardo. Let it not be what I’m thinking. I will tear Bernadette piece by piece if any single hair on Cardo’s head is hurt. I will be a murderer from this day.

I felt Cardo hugging me and that’s when I opened my eyes, his teary eyes looking into mine.

I looked around the room, and saw that Stephen had tackled Bernadette to the ground. The gun had gone off, but it had only hit the glass wall and shattered it to the floor. I felt my body shaking with relief.

“Cardo, are you okay?” I asked, my voice trembling. He nodded, his arms still wrapped around me. “I’m okay,” he said. “Thank you, Stephen.”

Stephen got up off of Bernadette, who was sobbing on the floor. While the other guards made their way into the room.

“I’m sorry I arrived late Mr. Ricardo, we were taking of other things and forgot to station some guards for safety__”

“You’re so lucky nothing happened to us!!” I snapped angrily at Stephen while watching as they tied Bernadette’s hands up.

Stephen nodded, his face pale. “I know, Miss. I’m truly sorry. It won’t happen again.”

Cardo squeezed my hand, and I looked at him. “It’s okay,” he said. “I’m just glad we’re all safe.”

I nodded, feeling my heartbeat begin to slow down. We are safe, there’s no scratch on Cardo and that was a big relief but I knew we would all have to deal with the emotional aftermath of this incident. Especially Bernadette.

Tears filled my eyes. “It’s not all safe, we almost died.”

He lifted me up and stood me up on my two feet, Bernadette was standing with a guard supporting her from behind, her gun lay several inches away from her.

She was staring at me spitefully, making anger brim inside of me. I hurriedly went to her before Cardo could hold me, I landed several slaps on her face.

“You must’ve finally gone nuts for threatening us with our own lives!!”

“I will do that again until one of you lose your life.”

I lifted my arm to hit her again but Cardo held me. “You’re gonna rot in jail!! Murderer, you killed your own father because of your own greed!! I wonder what you’re going to tell your daughter when she grows up!! How the mother and father are both murderers!”

I yelled forcing tears out of her eyes. “No, that’s not true!” Bernadette cried, her voice filled with pain and desperation. “I didn’t mean to kill my father! I never wanted that to happen! I just wanted what was mine!”

“What was yours?” I asked, my voice scornful. “What about your siblings, your uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews, what was yours?!”

“I’m sorry!” she sobbed, wriggling to get free. “I know I’ve done terrible things, but I didn’t mean to kill my father.”

“Take her away.” Cardo ordered the guards and they began to push her away while she struggled to get away.

“Ricardo, do you feel so good now that you’ve scattered the family with your own bare hands? Do you think all of them will forgive you and your family for everything?”

I held Cardo, “Yes!! It’s time for a new beginning, a new era where there’s no one to stop us from soaring high like an eagle. It’s high time Cardo takes his rightful place in the Alejandrozz family.”

“What about mother? Don’t you think you’re putting her in so much pain!!” She was yelling since we can barely hear her now. She was almost gone.

“Don’t worry, I will take care of mom?!” Cardo replied before the door was shut, and the room came back to total silence except for the noise of the broken glasses as a maid was around packing it up.

I turned to Cardo, and he was looking down at the floor, his expression unreadable. I could tell he was struggling with the events of the night. I knew he was feeling a mix of emotions – anger, sadness, and confusion.

“Are you okay?” I asked, reaching out to touch his arm. He looked up at me, his eyes full of pain.

“I’m not sure,” he said, his voice sounding strained. “I feel like I’m __” he held back while I let him hug me. “I almost lost you, I thought I’m never gonna see you again.”

“Everything happened so fast, the gun shot made me pray like I’ve never done before.” He added not wanting to let me go.

“That’s true,” I said, gently rubbing his back. “But we’re fine, we didn’t lose each other. At least, we’ve caught Bernadette, everything will be normal now, don’t you think? We won’t have to think of anything else except ourselves, all we need is to put your father to rest tomorrow and we will be fine.”

“You know,” he said, after a few moments of silence. “I’m grateful to have you by my side. You make me feel like I can face anything. And I’m glad you were with me tonight. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

I smiled, feeling my heart swell with love for him. “I’ll always be by your side,” I said, looking into his eyes. “No matter what happens. You’re my rock, and I’ll be yours.”

He smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes. “Let’s do all the things we’ve never done since we got married.”

I smiled brighter. ” You have to marry me properly first.” He gave out a painful chuckle.

“I will do that, I will announce you around the world, I have to tell everyone who cared to know that I’m in love with you.” I felt my stomach and didn’t help the happiness surging into me.

“I love you Cardo.”

“I love you more Carmen, maybe forever and ever.”

He kissed me, lifted me up and led me to the room, his kiss getting tensed as he lowered me to the bed, my back touched the soft sheets and it sent shivers down my spine.

He was caging me down to the bed with a smile on his lips and joyful tears in his eyes. It moved me, it made my eyes wet with tears too.

Ten thousand worth of pain, I could see them flashing through his eyes, he must’ve went through a lot in the hands of his family. I experienced it too, they suffocated Cardo a lot to the extent that he had to become a fool, a stupid CEO who doesn’t know what he’s doing with business.

I once h@tëd him too, I once thought he’s foolish but meeting him told me that I’m wrong, I’m wrong to judge the yellow eyed mi principe azul, the only charming man after my soul.

He brushed my hands all over my face and hair.

“Gracias, Carmen, por entrar en mi vida y encantarme con tu amor. (Thank you Carmen, for coming into my life and for bewitching me with your love)”

I felt a warm feeling in my heart hearing him speak.

“You’re so sweet,” I said in Spanish, “Eres tan dulce!”

He laughed, a deep and hearty laugh that I loved so much, “Me encanta hacerte sonreír. (You know I love making you smile)”

I smiled feeling my heart clenching, it’s over, the whole pain is over but I can’t help the voice speaking to me, the weeping yellow eyes. I brought my hands to his face and wiped off the tears but it never stopped coming.

“You’re the reason I started breathing Carmen.”

I nodded, “I will make all your dreams come true Carmen. Everything you’ve always wished for, I will make all of them come true.” He nibbled at my neck.

“All of my dreams??”

“Yes, all of your dreams, I will make it come true.”
