CHAPTER 37❣38
★••••••★
{ DEAD OR LIVING }
Esmeralda snapped her eyes open, jolting up in a sitting position on the bed and breathing heavily like someone who had just run a marathon.
She was sweating profusely and her pillows were soaked up in it. The room dwelled in darkness and silence. The last time she dreamt, it was somewhat similar to this one. Horrific and complicated.
Blood… It is one substance she is beginning to dislike.
Esmeralda got out of bed, ruffling her hair while puffing out a deep and shaky breath. Her legs felt heavy and numb. She couldn’t wrap her head around the nightmare. It made absolutely no sense!
Okay, since she came into this world, nothing seems to be making sense anymore. Even her being alive doesn’t make any sense.
She walked to the wall-length mirror and blankly stared at her reflection. A face that wasn’t hers stared back at her, and memories of the nightmare flooded her head and occupied her sense of reasoning.
How could she have sunk her teeth into the neck of that innocent rabbit? What kind of a stupid dream is that? She thought to herself, momentarily closing her eyes and heaving out a few deep breaths.
She felt sick and uncomfortable. She desperately wants to leave this world and go back to her family in the human world where she originally came from. The human world was the only world she could understand and believe in. But appears to be that she would be stuck in this world, and this body for a very long time.
She doesn’t even know how to go about it to get out of this place. Or even out of this d@mn demonic body.
Esmeralda sneakily stepped out of the bedroom, carefully not to make a sound or grab the attention of the guards lurking around.
She slipped out of the house and into the garden – The same place she had dreamt about moments ago.
The girl bites her lower lip, surveying the environment while crossing her arms over her chest.
‘Am I gradually turning into one of these people?’ She thought to herself, narrowing her eyes a little bit. ‘How long do I have to be trapped in here for?’
“Princess Lilith?” A voice called out, cutting through Esme’s train of thought and grabbing her attention.
She slowly spun around to face the intruder who had just disturbed her thought of uncertainty.
A young man who looked like he was in his twenties but definitely a thousand or hundred years old stood before her, watching her closely. He was dressed in royal guard attire and that only explains his position in the palace.
She lifted a brow, subtly tilting her head to the other side, trying to act like the original Lilith. But then again, how would Lilith act if she was in this situation? Esmeralda has no idea.
“What are you doing here, Princess Lilith?” The guy asked in a soft tone.
“Who are you?” Esmeralda fired back, ignoring his question. She felt bad for talking to him in that improper and unruly manner but she has no choice. To survive in this world and in this body, she needs to do everything not to let anyone know that she was someone else occupying the body of their demon princess.
What would be her punishment for this atrocity she knows nothing about? Death? Hanging? Beaten? Regardless of the punishment, it wouldn’t be good.
“My name is Hermes, my princess.” He answered, bowing his head to show her some respect. “I am the guard in charge of tonight’s security.”
“Oh, I see.” She cleared her throat, hoping not to drop her facade and let her guard down. A slight mistake can ruin everything for her. She doesn’t belong in this world but no one has to know that. Revealing the truth to anyone could cost her her life. “You can go on with your duty, Hermes. I will be out here for a while.”
“But, my princess, you should_”
“Enough!” She cut him off harshly.
Hermes quickly sunk down to his knees, bowing his head deeply to the point of kissing the ground. “I’m sorry, my princess. I must have crossed the line. Please forgive me.”
Esmeralda was taken aback by his behavior. She least expected this reaction from him.
What would Lilith do if a guard begs for forgiveness on his knees? She wondered, thinking of a way to deal with this situation but nothing seemed to be coming to mind.
Well, Füçk it. She was going to do things her way henceforth. No one will know anything. Yes, they might see the changes in her but there’s no proof that she isn’t Lilith.
“No, it’s okay.” She said calmly. “I’m sorry for speaking to you in that manner. Please stand up.”
Hermes’ eyes widened. He was both surprised and caught off guard. He had expected anything from this princess but definitely not this. Lilith was rude, mean, heartless, selfish… she was anything but nice.
If she had asked him to crawl with his knees to the end of the garden, he would have done it without an ounce of surprise. But telling him to stand up and she apologizing for being rude to him was the height of it all. Should he be worried? What does she have in mind? For once, since he began working for the palace, Princess Lilith has confused him with her actions. She has done something to keep him wondering.
“Can’t you hear?” Her tiny voice disrupted him. “Please stand up.”
He blinked severally, giving her a look of perplexity. “Do you want to kill me?” She raised a questioning brow at him in return to his sentiment. “Look, my princess, if your intention is to kill me, please do so without being so nice about it.”
Esmeralda rolled her eyes. Why wasn’t she surprised? Oh, because the ‘Lilith’ she has heard so much about was anything but kindhearted.
“I’m not going to kill you, Hermes. No one is going to do that to you. You have nothing to worry about. I mean it when I said you should stand up. And it’s not because I have an interior motive about it but it’s because I want you to stand up and go on with your duty.” She elaborated.
Hermes and Esmeralda looked into each other’s eyes for what felt like forever. The guard remained kneeling while Esme was looking down at him, waiting patiently for him to heed her commands.
“I’m sorry,” He began, averting his gaze to the ground and bowing his head deeper into the ground. “but I can’t stand up.”
Esmeralda was pissed off. Not because he wouldn’t listen to her but because he was making her feel even more guilty about this whole thing.
With the anger radiating through her body, she lost her senses and went down to her knees.
Hermes hadn’t realized this yet as he was still bowing his head.
“Is this what you want then?” She asked in a gentle voice.
The guard raised his head and his eyes went wider than before and his mouth partly opened.
“Are you going to stand up or should we remain this way until everyone comes out and sees us?” She raised a challenging brow at him.
Hermes didn’t think twice to stand up. He quickly held out his hand for her which she accepted and he pulled her up to her feet.
“You shouldn’t have done that, my princess.” He said, dusting off dirt from the knees of her dress. “Do you know what would happen if anyone saw you in that position with me? I could lose my life for it.”
“If only you had listened to me when I asked you to stand up, I wouldn’t have knelt down.” She responded. “Anyway, I should go back to bed.” She yawned with a small smile on her face. Esmeralda felt the need to thank Hermes for interrupting her earlier. If not for him, the nightmare that brought her out here to think, the nightmare that felt like a huge load of burden wouldn’t have been lifted up her shoulders. “Goodnight, Hermes.”
Hermes bowed his head narrowly. “Goodnight, Princess Lilith.”
She smiled and walked back inside, leaving him behind to continue with his duty.
Hermes smiled. “She’s so different right now.” He shook his head. “No, I shouldn’t get used to it. It never lasts.”

“The girl is dead?” Mr.Chester gasped out, tailing after his wife to the dining area. It is one thing for the girl to be left in the hospital, unconscious; But it’s an entirely different story for her to be dead. What does that make his daughter? Clearly a murderer. And he knows for a fact that his wife knows that already. Their precious daughter is a murderer at a young age. Does this make them bad parents? Of course.
“Do you need me to repeat it over and over again? I said the student is dead. D-E-A-D.” She spelled out, rolling her eyes. “We have nothing to worry about anymore.” She smiled.
“Are you for real?” Mr.Chester scoffed. “A child is dead and your daughter happens to be the murderer and what? You see nothing wrong with that? Dear wife, we are harboring a killer in our house!”
“Wow!” Beverly exclaimed from the entrance of the dining, giving her father a judging look. “That’s… heartbreaking hearing those degrading words about me from you, Dad.”
“Did you hear what happened?” He asked her, furrowing his brows at her.
“Didn’t my mother tell you that I was the one who gave her the good news?” She arched a brow, a mischievous smile playing at the side of her lips.
“Good news?” The man reiterated, glancing over at his wife, she had an unreadable expression but he was able to see the anger in her eyes. She wasn’t angry at Beverly, their daughter – she was mad at him for being judgmental towards their daughter’s attitude. Mr.Chester moved his gaze back to Beverly. “You call the death of a fellow human good news?”
“What else am I supposed to call it, Dad?” She asked nonchalantly. Her voice held no remorse or guilt. “Esmeralda would have been a problem for me, and our family. The heavens are on my side on this and that’s the reason she was kicked out of the surface of this world.” She released an exasperated breath, ruffling her hair. “Anyone can oppose me but not Mum or you.”
“You are my daughter, Beverly, and_”
“Exactly why you should always support me.” She cut him off. “Regardless of what I do, you as my father should support and defend me just like my mother always does.”
Mr.Chester shook his head calmly, giving her a sad and guilty look. Why does he feel bad about the turnout of his beautiful daughter? She was never like this as a kid, what changed?
“Anyway,” Beverly cleared her throat, picking up a duffle bag from the floor. “I am spending the night at Brent’s house. I will go to school tomorrow from there.” She announced.
Mrs.Chester nodded her head in approval. “Okay, dear. Drive carefully and take care, okay?”
“Okay.” Beverly smiled and walked out of the dining room, her car keys dangling from her fingers. She didn’t say a word to her father or even spare him a glance.
As soon as she was out of sight, Mr.Chester faced his wife, giving her a look of disappointment. “You are going to regret your actions. I just hope you don’t lose Beverly on the way.” With that said, he left the room as well.
“Rubbish!” Mrs.Chester huffed, rolling her eyes.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Delphine, Lou, and Calliope sat in a circle on the floor. A thick silence loomed in the air, hanging over them like a firmament.
The girls were deep in their heads, thinking over what had happened with their friend, Lilith.
She has changed. No matter how much she tried to pretend, the change was apparent.
And as much as it was confusing and complicated, it worried the three girls so much. It is one thing for Lilith, a succubus, to lose consciousness and it is another thing for her to be possessed by an unknown being.
But what if it wasn’t possession? What if it was something else? If the latter was the case, what is the something else then?
The silence in the air thickened that if a needle fell to the ground it would be heard.
However, Lou cleared her throat loudly, breaking the ice cube and getting rid of the stillness.
“What are we going to do?” She asked, staring between Delphine and Calliope. “Something needs to be done. If Lilith is really possessed, we need to inform the king and queen so that they can do something about it.”
“We are not sure about anything, Lou.” Calliope spoke out. “It’s only speculations and nothing more.”
“Our speculation could be right.”
“The same way it can be wrong. If we spread false news about the royal household, regardless of our friendship with Lilith, we could lose our lives.” Calliope stated.
Lou simply nodded her head in understanding, lowering her gaze to the floor.
“What are you thinking, Delph? You are the smartest amongst us here.” Calliope let out.
Delphine let out a soft sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose whilst placing her elbow on her knee. “I’m thinking… everything is twisted and I can’t just figure anything out.” She paused. “Succubus don’t dream, Lilith did. Succubus doesn’t fall off a building and then lose consciousness, that was the case for her. And now… now,” She shook her head. “What am I supposed to think, guys? Lilith isn’t telling us anything.”
“Not anymore.” Calliope objected.
Lou and Delphine gave her a dazed expression.
“What do you mean?” Lou posed.
“Regarding what Delph said, she said Lilith doesn’t tell us anything which is a lie. Lilith tells us almost everything. From the burnt on her back to the things Queen Ixora told her. She never hid secrets from us.” Calliope rose to her feet. “But recently, she has.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Delphine admitted.
“She doesn’t even hang out with us on the rooftop. She is usually reading books in the library or paying all her attention to class. Lilith is never like that!” Lou retorted.
“She even claimed to like Lilies. Am I losing my mind here?” Calliope sighed.
“Then that makes the three of us because we are all losing our minds.” Delphine muttered under her breath.
“I think the only thing left for us to do is to keep a close eye on Lilith. I don’t know. Maybe we’ll be able to figure something out.” Lou suggested.
“Any better idea?” Calliope gazed at Delphine who just shook her head as a no. “Alright then. We should go with Lou’s idea if that’s the case because I have no better idea either.”
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The pounding didn’t stop but Lilith didn’t care. Her peace of mind in this new world is paramount to her and if locking up that little beast called Chucky will guarantee her that, she doesn’t see why she shouldn’t take her chances.
The dog continued pounding and whining at the same time, seeking help and a way out of the constricted environment. But too bad, the only human around was the very person that locked him up there in the first place.
“Füçking stop the noise!” She demanded through gritted teeth, gripping the lipstick in her hand. The pounding eventually ceased and she released a breath of relief. “Good.” She proceeded with applying the black lipstick on her pink full lips when the pounding resumed again, making her growl at the back of her throat in fury.
Maybe she should have rather killed the animal instead of locking it up to die of suffocation and starvation. Maybe the death of that Füçking dog would grant her the peace of mind she so hoped for and deserved.
Lilith sucked in a deep breath, relieving herself of every anger that was building inside of her. Today will be her first day of school. Her first day in a human school to be precise. As Esmeralda Brown. She shouldn’t let anything ruin her mood.
She went on with applying her lipstick and makeup in general, pushing the dog’s persistent pounding and whining to the back of her head. He was the least of her problems – at the moment. By the time she was done, she stood in front of the mirror, a smirk tugging at the corner of her lip as she took in her reflection.
Though it wasn’t her original face staring back at her. Nonetheless, she was proud of the transformation she had done for this face. Actually, Esmeralda is an attractive girl. With her oval-shaped face, round eyes, pointed nose, and full pink lips. Lilith would have definitely Füçk a girl like Esmeralda if she had met her earlier during those times she came over to the human world to feed off their energy. Esmeralda was her type of girl. Shy personality but bad.
There’s something about Esme that Lilith hasn’t pinpointed and maybe the Esmeralda of a girl hasn’t even noticed it yet about herself.
Lilith pierced more holes in her both ears, having a sinister smile on her face. How would the real Esme feel when she returns to her body only to find it this way? Tremendous. Okay, maybe she shouldn’t be misusing someone else’s body like this but come on, this is the only way she can feel comfortable in this body and world.
There was a gentle knock on the walk-in closet, grabbing her attention.
“Esme, aren’t you done yet?” It was her brother; Camden.
“Give me a sec. I’ll be right…” She grabbed a black backpack from the bag rack and bolted out of the closet. “Out.”
“Whoa!” Camden whistled, eyeing her closely with his mouth agape. “Who are you and what have you done to my sister?”
‘Trust me, you don’t want to know who I am. And as for your sister? I’m sure she’s out there, somewhere.’ Lilith said in her head as she slung the bag over her shoulder.
She was wearing black leather trousers, a black jean jacket, black boots that reached her knees, black hand gloves, and dark shades. She was looking like a total badass. Completely different from bubbly and colorful Esmeralda.
“Did… did you pierce more holes in your ears?” Camden asked, glancing her over.
“Yes, I did.” She answered.
“This… is unbelievable. I thought you h@tëd black colors. How did you even have these clothes in your closet?” He quizzed.
Now, that’s a question that only the real Esmeralda can answer. Lilith had found these clothes and even more badass clothes in her closet. Why would she have them when she h@tës them? Or maybe Esme never h@tëd things like this as she has proclaimed.
Lilith shrugged her shoulders, heading to the door. “I’ve always loved black but you didn’t just realize it.” She winked, opening the door. “Let’s go. I don’t want to be late for school.”
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Lilith took off her dark shades, peering at the bright building that stood a few miles away from her. It was the exact opposite of Lifeless School in the underworld. Students strolled into the school premises, chattering and giggling. The environment was lively and Lilith h@tëd it.
She sat beside her mother in the black Rolls-Royce, studying the vicinity with a bored expression on her face. This wasn’t what she had anticipated. Everything here was a mood-wrecker.
“Dear, are you having a change of heart? Do you want us to return home? Does it hurt to be back here?” Mrs.Brown questioned.
Lilith thought of returning home and not going to any human school ever again but she needed answers. She was curious to know what happened to Esmeralda – How did she fall off the building? Who pushed her? Why did it affect her in the underworld? What’s her connection to this world? And so many more. This school will provide her with the answers she needs. Moreover, she can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they see her.
“Let’s go inside.” Lilith grinned menacing.
••••••••
“Good morning, students.” Mrs.Chester greeted, watching every student gathered in the auditorium carefully and closely. She wore a sad look on her face, playing the role of a depressed and unhappy principal who just lost a student at her school. She did lose a student but no, she wasn’t sad about it. If anything, she felt relieved and happy. Why? The answer is obvious.
“Good morning!” The students replied altogether, allowing decorum to take its place in the auditorium as they didn’t want to do anything to provoke their principal.
Mrs.Chester appreciated the fact that they respected her this much. She cleared her throat and began saying the main reason why they had gathered here. They were all here to pay their last respect to their fellow student. Esmeralda Brown.
“As we already know,” She sniffled. “We lost one of us. She died tragically in this school and_” She paused, feigning hurt and sorrow. “It hurts me to know that a student of mine is dead.”
Murmurs filled the hall as students started mumbling words to themselves regarding the information. No one knew who started the rumor to begin with so how true is this?
“Silence!” Mrs.Chester yelled, banging her fist on the podium whilst giving them the ‘don’t make me angry’ look. The murmurs stopped just as they started. “I know this is hard and so painful to take in. But death is inevitable. We are all fated to die someday and I am not saying this to scare anyone but to make you know that death is not a crime but…fate.” She sighed. “Esmeralda Brown is dead and we should pay her our last respec_”
“Who’s dead?” A voice cut through, interrupting Mrs.Chester and cutting the woman mid-sentence.
All eyes darted to the entrance of the hall and screams filled the environment. Some students even fainted from the shock while some were doing everything to stand still and understand what was going on…and others were hyperventilating.
“Ghost!” A student yelled and ran past Lilith, dashing out of the auditorium.
Lilith gave a lopsided smile and crossed her arms over her chest, scrutinizing everyone and enjoying the chaos that she was causing.
Who said demons have no power over humans? Because whoever said that…lied!
