Chapter 21
“You… Didn’t know?”Emily asked, seeing the shock on Daphne’s face.
“Hold on,can you explain what you mean by what you said? Kiara did what?”
“She was telling me about this device and I got to know she studied neuroscience for two years but changed her major to economics so she could help her stepmom with her supermarket…”
“Can you,stop… Please”Daphne muttered.
“What’s wrong?”
Daphne but her lip not knowing whether to be sad,angry, disappointed or frustrated.
Kiara had done a lot of things for Natasha which Daphne had never approved of and found absurd but this was the height of it.
“Her stepmom must be really good to her for her to have done such”Emily said
“Her stepmom is nothing close to good”Daphne said “She’s a liar, she’s…”
“I got the snacks”Kiara said when she got to them, raising the two plastic bags in her hands. “What’s wrong?”She asked seeing the look on their faces.
“Nothing”Daphne faked a smile.
“Yeah, nothing”Emily muttered and glanced at Daphne.
Kiara laid out the snacks on the table and they began eating.
Emily wondered why Daphne changed her mood, not wanting Kiara to know what they were talking about.
Daphne seemed upset when she told her about Kiara changing her major from neuroscience to economics and also had anger in her voice when she was talking about Kiara’s stepmom.
“Nice necklace”Emily said when she took notice of the necklace Kiara was wearing. “Aw, it’s a matching one”She smiled when she saw Daphne was also wearing the same necklace as Kiara’s.
“Yeah”Daphne and Kiara smiled.
“Wow,check it out” Kiara said, amazement written in her eyes as she pointed at the tower which was beginning to light up in different colors, starting from the bottom.
“Whoa”Emily smiled while Daphne picked her phone and took a video of it.
“Okay,this is definitely the best weekend ever” Daphne said
“Agreed”Kiara said and they all laughed.
Daphne sat,her back rested on the chair and her hand in her hair, fuming as she remembered what Emily told her about Kiara the previous day.
How could Kiara do that?!
She didn’t want to speak to Kiara about it because it was probably going to lead to another fight between them and she didn’t want that but she had to find a way to stop Kiara from doing things to earn Natasha’s love.
This was getting too far.
While still buried in her thoughts,she felt a lingering gaze on her.
She raised her eye lids and her eyes widened when she saw the person in front of her.
“What the…”She said, standing up
“You seemed to be lost in thought”Lex’s annoying voice said to her.
“What are you doing here?”She asked,anger and irritation evident in her eyes and voice.
“I mean no harm,I just want to speak with you”He said calmly.
“Oh,sorry, I’m not interested”She said in a mocking tone.
The other attendants watched them.
“Daphne, don’t you think you and your boyfriend should settle your dispute outside or somewhere private?”One of them said.
“My boyfriend?”Daphne retorted and scoffed.
“Yes, let’s settle our dispute outside”Lex said with a smile and the attendant who spoke smiled at him.
Daphne shot him a glare.
“Come on, don’t be stubborn”He said and went behind the counter, grabbing her hand and bringing her out.
“Are you insane,what do you think you’re doing?”
“You don’t want to create a scene here,do you?”He said in a whisper “Let’s just talk outside. I know you’re angry with me and you can do wh@tëver you want to me after we talk”He said
“Fine”She gritted her teeth and followed him out not wanting to create a scene. “What do you want?” She folded her arms, giving him an angry an unfriendly glare.
“Please,I need you to help me with something”He said.
She scoffed.
“Can you help me speak to Kiara? I really need to speak with her but she’s been ignoring me and…”
“I wonder why”Daphne said sarcastically.
Lex sighed.
“Listen,I know you’re mad at me. You have every right to be. I acted like a complete jerk to Kiara”
“Not only as a jerk”
“I know and I’m really sorry. I really mean it and I want Kiara to know that. You probably don’t believe me but…”
“I don’t and even if I did,I don’t care”She stated plainly.
“And I totally understand why but I really need you to help me speak to Kiara to give me a chance to tell her how I really feel. I’m really sorry I hurt her. I was a jerk and she didn’t deserve what I did to her. I just…I want her to know that”He said sincerely and pleadingly.
Daphne stared at him.
He sounded sincere and really desperate for her help but she wasn’t going to have any of it and neither was she going to help him.
He deserved the attitude he was getting from Kiara.
“I can’t help you speak to Kiara”She said.
His shoulders dropped.
“I mean,you sound really desperate but…No”She added “But, I’m sure you don’t need anyone to tell you you deserve what you’re getting”
“Of course”He muttered with a sad smile “I’m sorry I disturbed you. I just thought that… Never mind” He said.
Daphne watched as he got into his car and drove off.
“Was I too harsh to him?”She asked, remembering how hurt he looked. “Like I care”She rolled her eyes and was about to enter the supermarket when a thought struck her.
She brought out her phone and dialed Kiara’s number.
She picked in a few seconds.
“Hey”Kiara said.
“Hi”Daphne smiled. “I wanted to ask,do you have Emily’s phone number?”She asked.
“No,not yet. Why do you ask?”
“Um,she told me to send her the photos we took yesterday but I don’t have her phone number” Daphne lied
“Oh”Kiara muttered”Do you want me to help you get it?”
“Yeah, that’ll be great”
“Sure, I’ll get it and send it to you”
“Thanks”She smiled before disconnecting the call.
She exhaled.
Ken and Emily sat facing each other, eating lunch together.
“So,had a nice weekend?”Ken asked.
“Yeah,you?”She asked
“Same old, boring”He nodded and she chuckled.
They went back to eating in silence again until Emily broke the silence.
“This feels really weird,I mean…We used to have so much to talk about”She said
“Yeah” Ken said, remembering how they usually spent time together before he confessed his feelings. “We even went out almost everytime”He said
“Now we’re working and…”
“Doesn’t mean we can’t pick up from where we left”He smiled “How about starting from today,we go back to hanging out as best friends again like we used to”
Emily grinned in response and he smiled.
Kiara stood in the kitchen washing the dishes.
She just finished having dinner with Natasha.
She turned when she heard someone come in and smiled when she saw Natasha.
“Need help?”Natasha asked sweetly with a smile.
“No, I’m good”Kiara smiled.
“How are things with your boss?”She asked
“Um, good”She nodded.
“Are you any close in earning his trust?”She asked, raising a brow.
“I…”
“I just want to know how things are going. I expect you to let me know of the improvement in our plan so things will go smoothly”Natasha said as nicely as she could “So,make sure to always let me know how things are going. We’re in this together,okay?”
Kiara nodded and Natasha smiled satisfactorily.
Daphne sat up on her couch when a text came in on her phone from Kiara.
She smiled,seeing the content of the text – Emily’s phone number.
She proceeded to dial it.
It took almost a minute before Emily finally picked up.
“Hi?”Emily said
“It’s me,Daphne” She said
“Oh,hi Daphne. What’s up?”
“Will you be able to meet with me tomorrow, there’s something I have to speak to you about”
“Is everything okay?”Emily asked, noticing the urgency in her voice.
“Um…Yes,no, it’s…I can’t really explain it over the phone”
“Okay,but can you at least give me a hint”
“Remember what I was about to tell you about Kiara’s stepmom yesterday before Kiara showed up?”
“Yeah”
“That’s it and I’d also like to ask you a favor concerning it”Daphne said.
