Chapter 39
Lex stood beside the closed door of the ward Daphne was taken into. A doctor has been in there with her for close to twenty minutes and he was impatiently waiting for the doctor or a nurse to come out and tell him how she was doing. Was she going to be okay?
At the same time he was hoping the cops caught the bastard who did that to her. He knew it wasn’t an accident but an intentional act.
The door opened a minute later and the doctor came out.
“How is she doing?”He asked immediately “Is she going to be okay?”
“Can we see in my office?”The doctor asked.
Lex swallowed as he stared at the doctor. What was the doctor planning to tell him in his office? The doctor’s facial expression made it hard for him to come up with ideas on why he wanted to see him.
“Can we?”The doctor asked again and he nodded.
The doctor led him to his office where they both sat afterwards.
“Are you by any chance related to the patient?”The doctor asked
“No,why?”
“Well,the accident was very fatal and it caused an internal bleeding in the patient. We’ll need to carry out a surgical operation on her”
“Is…She going to be okay after the surgery?”Lex asked
“It’s a… Fifty – Fifty chance”The doctor said.
Lex’s mouth parted as his heart skipped a beat. He’s never been in such situation before and was clearly terrified.
“If you can contact any of her relatives so they can give their consent, sign the forms and also foot the bills…”
Lex thought for a moment. He didn’t know any of Daphne’s relatives.
“Can I be the one to do all of that? I don’t know any of her relatives”He said.
The doctor gave a nod.

Lex went to make the payment after signing the forms and turned to head back to Daphne’s ward after receiving the receipt but stopped when he sighted Erik.
Erik sighted him also and walked to him immediately.
Erik paused when he got to Lex, taking in the expression on his face.
“How is she?”He asked.
“The doctor said she’ll have to undergo a surgery” Lex sighed “it’s a Fifty – Fifty survival chance”
Erik went mute for a while on hearing Lex’s sentence.
“I…Had no idea you knew Daphne”Lex said.
“I do, she’s Kiara’s friend”Erik said “Is Kiara with her?”
“No, she’s yet to arrive” Lex said
“Yet? She left before me. She should be here already”Erik said.
“She’s not. I was even surprised you arrived before her”
“Do you think maybe she’s somewhere in the hospital? Trying to find her way to Daphne”Erik asked.
“I don’t think so. She wouldn’t go through that stress when she could easily call me”
“She’s not with her phone”Erik said showing Kiara’s phone to Lex. “I’ll look round the hospital for her” He said again and went in search of her immediately.
Lex went outside of the hospital and waited to see if Kiara would arrive.

Erik returned to meet Lex after almost an hour search round the hospital.
“I can’t find her”He told Lex.
“Me either”Lex shook his head.
“Why isn’t she here yet?”Erik muttered worriedly.
“Maybe she decided to get Daphne’s parents before coming”Lex suggested. He wasn’t sure but just felt that might be the reason she was taking long to arrive.
Erik sighed. Lex’s suggestion didn’t ease his worry a bit.
“Do you know where Daphne’s parents live?”He asked.
Lex sighed and shook his head
Erik brought Kiara’s phone out of his pocket and called Emily. She picked almost immediately.
“Emily”He said
“Mr Erik”Emily said, surprised to hear his voice. She had expected to hear Kiara’s voice.
“Do you have any idea where Daphne’s parents live?”He asked.
“No sir,why do you ask?”
“Daphne got involved in an accident and Kiara left after hearing the news,heading to the hospital she was admitted but when I got to the hospital,I couldn’t find Kiara. I was curious to know if she went to alert Daphne’s parents before deciding to come to the hospital or not”
“Accident?”Emily muttered “I have no idea where Daphne’s parents live but can you tell me which hospital she was admitted?”She asked “And,have you tried looking round the hospital for Kiara?”
“Yeah”Erik sighed.
“Okay,um…Tell me the name of the hospital so I can come to meet you”Emily said.
°°TWENTY MINUTES LATER°°°
Emily got down from a taxi in front of the hospital and met Erik standing alone at the entrance.
Lex had gone back into the hospital but gave Erik directions to Daphne’s ward before leaving.
Emily went to meet him.
“You… Still haven’t seen her?”She asked.
Erik shook his head
“You were with her when she heard the news about Daphne?”She asked.
“Yeah but she left immediately after she heard the news. She even left her phone”He said “it was obvious she was headed here. She couldn’t have gone somewhere else after hearing her friend had been admitted in a hospital”He said
“Maybe she got caught up in traffic?”
“I didn’t get caught up in traffic on my way here. There’s no way she did. Even if she did,she still would have gotten here before me”He said,his worry gradually giving way to fear.
“Um, speaking of Daphne,is she okay?”Emily asked.
“She’s undergoing a surgery”
Her eyes widened. “It’s that serious? Will she be okay afterwards?”She asked worriedly.
“It’s a Fifty – Fifty chance”
“Oh my…”Emily muttered as her hands slowly went up to her mouth.
‘What’s happening? Daphne is in such condition and Kiara’s whereabout is still yet to be known’ She thought.
Why were both terrible things happening on the same night…
“Mr Erik,Kiara still hasn’t arrived?” She heard and looked up to see Lex coming out of the hospital.
“No”Erik answered.
“Lex”She called, looking surprised to see him “You’re here”
“He was the one brought Daphne to the hospital”Erik said
“I was there when the accident happened”Lex said “I don’t even know if to call it an accident”He shook his head,anger brewing inside of him as he remembered the scene.
“What do you mean?”Emily asked.
“The car drove directly towards Daphne as she crossed the road, ignoring the red traffic light. It sped towards her like she was some sort of target and brutally hit her when it got to her”
“That’s…Not an accident”Erik said.
“I really hope the cops were able to catch the psycho who did that to her”Lex gritted.
“Who would deliberately do that to her?”Erik asked.
Emily went mute as her mind went to Kiara’s stepmom.
“No”She discarded the thought. There’s no way her stepmom would do such a thing.
“What are you thinking about?” Lex asked her.
“Nothing,I was just wondering why Kiara isn’t here yet. I’m getting really worried”She said.
“Yeah,me too”Lex said.
Erik sighed. “Where are you,Kiara?”He muttered before facing Emily and Lex.
“You two can go in. I’ll wait here for Kiara” He said.
Emily sighed before nodding.

Natasha sat, resting her back on the chair as she stared at an unconscious Kiara who was tied to the chair right across her.
Thomas stood beside her, staring down at Kiara also.
The room around them was dark and quiet. The only source of light in the room was the one coming from Natasha’s phone which she held up to Kiara’s face. It wasn’t enough to light up the whole room so most part of the room remained dark.
They preferred it that way.
She released a sigh a minute later, feeling bored already and then turned to look at Thomas who was standing beside her.
“How many more hours until she wakes up?”She asked.
“Nine”He answered.
“We can’t wait that long. We need her voice if we’re to make that phone call. That’s the only way he’ll know she’s with us”She said and stood up “Let’s wake her up”
Thomas nodded and got a syringe from the briefcase on the floor. He handed it to Natasha.
Natasha wasted no time in piercing it in Kiara’s arm. She pulled it out afterwards.
After a minute’s wait,Kiara finally opened her eyes
Thomas and Natasha shared a smirk.
Kiara woke up to find herself in a dark room. She felt lightheaded. She shook her head and tried moving but noticed she couldn’t. Her hands appeared to be…Tied.
She blinked, trying to get rid of her blurry vision and when she finally did,she noticed a figure standing in front of her. She slowly looked up and aided with the light coming from the phone the person was holding,she was able to see the person’s face.
“Natasha?”Her weak voice asked wanting to be sure.
“Hello, step daughter”Natasha said with a grin.
Kiara’s eyes widened in shock.
