Chapter 41
“Kidnapped? What makes you think that?”Emily asked
“I…Just got this phone call and I heard Kiara. She was screaming in pain. She was being tortured by whoever her captor is”
Emily’s lips parted as a look of horror took over her face after hearing Erik’s sentence. Not knowing Kiara’s whereabout was bothersome but now knowing that she was kidnapped and being tortured, heightened it.
She looked at Erik.
“Kiara’s captor made the phone call?”She asked to be sure and Erik gave a nod, snapping out of his thoughts. “You… Don’t recognize the voice?”She asked.
“No”
Emily went mute, thinking for a while before speaking again.
“Can you come with me to Daphne’s apartment?” She asked “There’s something I need to show you. I think it might help us in finding out who Kiara’s captor is”She said.
Erik looked at her.
°°MINUTES LATER°°
Erik stepped out of his car after halting it in front of Daphne’s apartment. Emily came out also and they both walked to the door.
Emily held the door knob and tried opening the door but it appeared to be locked.
“No,no,no”She muttered as she tried forcing it open.
“It’s locked?”Erik asked and she nodded.
He sighed frustratedly before looking down at the flowers pots on each side of the door. He bent to check if the key could be in any of the flowers pots.
Emily joined him in the search and after a minute, they found it beneath the doormat. She exhaled before proceeding to open the door.
They went in after she opened the door. She quickly went to get Daphne’s laptop and brought it to the living room.
She sat and placed the laptop on the table. She turned it on afterwards.
Erik joined her on the couch.
Emily sighed when the laptop requested for a password. First,the door and now the laptop.
“I need Daphne’s password”She muttered. “What I planned on showing you is on her laptop and if we can’t get access to it…”She sighed and shook her head.
Erik leaned forward and brought the laptop to his side, focusing on it with a serious look on his face as his fingers began to dance round the keys on the laptop, trying to hack it so they could get access to it. In less than a minute,he successfully hacked the laptop and placed it back in front of Emily.
Emily wasted no time in searching for the footage Daphne used in exposing Natasha and Thomas’s affair to Kiara a few nights ago. She turned to face Erik after she found it.
“I’m going to play this video and I need you to focus on the woman’s voice so you can tell if there’s any similarity between her voice and Kiara’s captor’s voice”She said to him before proceeding to click on play.
She paused the video few minutes later and faced Erik.
“So,any similarities?”She asked.
“Yeah”Erik slowly nodded “How…” He muttered, looking confused.
“Of course,she had to be the one”Emily said quietly to herself before raising her head to look at a confused Erik
The conversation Erik listened to in the video made his mind go back to the things Kiara told him the previous night and he also wanted to know why the woman’s voice in the video sounded the same as Kiara’s captor.
“Um,I can tell you’re confused but I’ll explain everything to you”She had to tell him everything she knew about Kiara’s stepmom, starting from how she manipulated Kiara and the rest of it. It was clear now that Natasha was the one responsible for Kiara’s kidnap and Erik had to know the reason behind it. He was going to ask anyways and it was best if he knew the truth. That was the only way they could work together to get Kiara out of Natasha’s hands.
“Well, for starters, that’s Kiara’s stepmom”She said
Erik had sort of expected that the woman in the video would be the Kiara’s stepmom after hearing her talk about using Kiara but he was still shocked though because that also meant her stepmom was responsible for kidnapping her. The question remained ‘why?’ And he was grateful Emily offered to explain everything to him.
“And in the video,you could hear her talk about using Kiara to get your wealth”She said “Well, that’s been her plan this whole time and also her reason for asking Kiara to come work for you but just to be clear, Kiara had no idea that was the reason her stepmom asked her to come work for you. Her stepmom made up this story about her dad partnering with yours and…”
“I know about the made up story”Erik said
“Kiara told you already?”Emily asked, surprised.
“Yeah but all she did was paint herself as a guilty and terrible person which I know she’s not”
“She’s been really hard on herself after finding out the truth about her stepmom and what she tried making her do to you”Emily said “Kiara would have never accepted to work for you if she knew the real reason behind it and the reason she even accepted her stepmom’s made up story which made her to start working for you was because of the love she had for her stepmom. Kiara’s stepmom was aware of the love Kiara had for her and also knew she could get Kiara to do the things she wanted as a result of that so…”Emily paused and sighed “I know it might sound really silly to you,Kiara loving her stepmom to such extent but if you understood Kiara’s reason…”
“Then make me understand. I’m not finding it silly but I’d really like to understand Kiara’s reason”He said and Emily nodded.

Kiara still felt weak from being tasered by Thomas. It was like all the energy from her had been sucked.
Natasha sat, staring at her with no ounce of pity or remorse in her eyes.
Thomas was seated on a chair,feet away from them.
“You know”Natasha began “About that will,”She let out a sly smile “Don’t be so happy about it. I know I’m not getting it but neither are you. Regardless of what decision Erik makes, you’re not leaving this place alive”She said with a murderous glare.

Erik felt broken after hearing the reason why Kiara would go through lengths to keep Natasha happy and pleased with her. He had no idea she’s been through such things. She never showed it.
Emily went on tell him how they came about the footage,the reason Daphne planted a camera in Natasha’s office, Kiara going to confront Natasha after she saw the footage and figuring out that Natasha and Thomas were con artists.
“I think her stepmom is annoyed that Kiara is no longer helping her and that’s why she’s doing this”Emily said “That’s my guess but can you tell me what she said to you during the phone call?”
“She um…”Erik swallowed, remembering Kiara’s screams “She made me know Kiara was with her and said she’d only let her go if I send her all the money I have. She’s giving me a maximum of six hours to make my decision”He ran his hands through his hair feeling frustrated.
Emily gasped “That’s…A really huge price. She’s really greedy and selfish”She retorted “We should report to the police”
“She threatened to hurt Kiara if I inform the
cops “Erik said. “Plus it’ll be hard for the cops to figure out where they’re keeping her before the time she’s giving me runs out”
Emily sighed and looked at Erik with concern in her eyes. He was in a really tight spot.She knew he had feelings for Kiara and that was why this was such a huge deal,a huge decision for him.
How could Natasha be so heartless?
“So, there’s nothing we can do?”She muttered.
“The only thing to do is to give her what she asked for, I can’t let her hurt Kiara”Erik said, standing up.
“You’ve…Made your decision?”Emily’s eyes widened.
He nodded and brought out his phone.

“He’s calling”Thomas said to Natasha and handed her her phone.
She picked the call and she let out a smug smile as she disconnected the call seconds later.
Kiara could hear her say ‘Good decision’ as she ended the call.
‘No,it shouldn’t be what she was thinking’She muttered in her head.
“He chose to give up all his money for you. How sweet”Natasha said with a smile
There was no way Erik possibly chose to do that. She thought he h@tëd her after telling him her reason for working for him. He shouldn’t do that for her,she didn’t deserve it. Moreso, Natasha was tricking him.
“You’re really heartless”Kiara said with hurt and disdain in her voice “All these years,I saw you as a sweet and thoughtful person,a mother figure,”She said with tears in her eyes “I blinded myself from seeing your fault. I really h@të myself for doing that”

Erik sighed as he brought down his phone.
He’ll be sending the money to her in a few minutes.
“This isn’t right,there has to be something we can do”Emily muttered.
She tried to think of other options.
“Hold on”She said when a thought struck her.
Erik looked at her.
“Daphne also planted a tracking device on Natasha’s car”She said and brought Daphne’s laptop closer to herself.
She smiled as she stared at the screen. The location of Natasha’s car was showing on it and that must be where Natasha and Thomas were and where they were keeping Kiara.
“I know where they’re keeping Kiara”She said
