Chapter 5
It was Lex,her ex boyfriend.
Her mind went back to the day they broke up and her annoyance slowly disappeared and was replaced by disappoinment in herself instead.
“Do you know him?”Ken’s voice jolted Kiara back to reality.
She took a step back and turned to face Ken but her bad knocked down a mug from a lady’s desk.
“No!”The lady exclaimed as the mug fell and shattered. “That was my favorite mug”She muttered, obviously frustrated.
“I’m so sorry”Kiara apologized and bent to pick the broken pieces of the mug.
“It’s okay”The lady sighed “I’ll clean it up”She said.
Kiara looked up at her.
“No,I made the mess,I should be the one to clean it up”She said.
“It’s fine, I’ll take care of it”She said,adjusting her glasses as she put on a pair of gloves before bending to pick the pieces. “Besides, you’ll get yourself injured if you pick it with your bare hands”She said.
Kiara sighed and stood.
“I’m really sorry”She apologized again.
The lady gave a short smile.
“Are you okay?”Ken asked Kiara when he noticed her mood changed.
“I’m fine”Kiara faked a smile.
Seeing Lex again ruined her mood.
Ken glanced back at the guy he saw Kiara staring at earlier before leaving the lab with her.
The tour ended minutes later and they returned to the office.
“So,I hope you’re now familiar with most of the offices in the company?” Ken asked as they sat at their desks.
Kiara nodded and looked through the glass walls of Erik’s office.
“Mr Erik is not in his office”She said to Ken when she saw that Erik’s desk was empty.
Ken checked the time on his wristwatch.
“A few minutes past ten. He’s having meeting with the finance department and you should be with him as his personal assistant but because you’re new,you get to use the whole of today to learn and understand what you ought to and ought not to do as Mr Erik’s assistant and after today, you’re expected to perform your full duties as his assistant without making any mistakes or you’ll piss him off”
“Yeah,I wouldn’t want that” She muttered.
“You’ll do great”Ken smiled at her.
A smile appeared on Kiara’s face when she saw Daphne already seated at their usual table.
“Hey”Kiara said,taking off her backpack.
Daphne smiled.
“You didn’t show up at the supermarket today either” She frowned at Kiara.
“I got a new job”
Daphne’s eyes went wide with surprise.
“Really?”She asked.
Kiara nodded.
“Natasha isn’t mad you stopped working at her supermarket?”
“No,she was the one who got me the job actually”
“You’re kidding”
“Nope”
“Oh”Daphne muttered with a disappointed look on her face. “So, where do you work now?”
“Tech builders. I work as the CEO’S assistant”
“Wow, that’s great. I’m so happy for you “Daphne said “We should celebrate this. Let’s go to a restaurant” She grinned and stood.
She pulled Kiara up and locked arms with her.
“To avoid future arguments, you’re the one paying the bills”
“Seriously?”
“You’re the one with a new job”Daphne shrugged.
Kiara shook her head and chuckled.
“My backpack”Kiara picked it up before she would forget it.
“Don’t tell me you wore that backpack to work”
“What?”She shrugged.
“Girl”Daphne gave her a disapproving look “You now work in a big company and even work as the CEO’S assistant”She said “Hold on,did your boss say anything about your dress or backpack when he saw you? Your boss is a male right?”
“Yes” Kiara nodded
“So, did he say anything about your dressing?”
“He thinks I dress like an highschool student “Kiara said awkwardly.
Daphne snickered.
Kiara looked at her
“It’s not funny”
“He really thinks that?”Daphne asked
“Yeah”Kiara nodded “You don’t think I dress like an highschool student,do you?”
“I’m your friend and I love you,I love everything about you, your sense of dressing included but – ” Daphne placed her hands on Kiara’s shoulders”You now work in an office and hold a really good position. You should get new and formal outfits”She said “Tomorrow,after you get back from work, let’s go shopping”She said again.
“At night?”
“On your day off then?”
Kiara nodded
“Before we head to the restaurant,can we go to a gift shop first?”
“Aw,I know I’m a darling but you don’t really need to get me gifts”
“Actually, it’s for someone else”
“Oh”
Erik came down from his car after his driver was done parking the car properly in his garage which held several other cars, expensive ones.
His driver followed behind him, carrying his bag as he walked to the door which led into the house.
The door was opened for him when he got there and a maid took his bag from the driver who turned and walked away afterwards.
Erik stepped into his luxurious sitting room which was expensively and lavishly designed.
Three white couches sat at the center of the sitting room and a chandelier hung above them,providing the large room with light.
Several exquisite paintings were hung on the wall round the room but the painting that stood out the most was an old painting of a man sitting alone at a lakeside.
A fire place was underneath it and not too far from it was a marbled stand which had a silver cage on it. A white rabbit was housed in it.
Erik stared at the painting for a while,a short and sad smile displaying on his lips before heading to his room.
He took of his jacket and threw it on his king sized bed before proceeding to unbutton his shirt.
A knock came on his door.
“Come in” He breathed.
A man who was obviously in his late fifties walked in.
“The maids told me you had arrived”The man said.
“What do you want,Nathan?”Erik asked, turning to face him.
Nathan was the head of all the workers in Erik’s mansion and was also the closest to Erik.
“Doctor Lawrence called,he says you’ve not been picking his calls”Nathan said.
“I’ll call him when I need him”
“He just wants to check up on you”
“Well,you can tell him I’m doing fine”
Nathan sighed.
“Let me know when you’re ready for dinner”Nathan said before leaving.
Natasha looked up from her phone when she saw Kiara walk in.
She smiled at her
“How was your first day, sweetheart?”She said
“Great”Kiara forced a smile on her face
“Should I conclude you came home late because you had a lot to do at the office or because…”
“I went out with Daphne”
“Does she know about your new job?”
Kiara nodded.
“You didn’t tell her why you’re working as Erik’s assistant,did you?”
“No”
“Good. No one asides the two of us must know about it”
“Yeah. Um… I’ll go to the kitchen to prepare dinner”
“I already did”Natasha smiled.
Kiara met Ken already seated at his desk.
“Good morning”She smiled at him as she sat on her chair after taking off her backpack.
Ken responded with a smile.
A few minutes later,Erik walked and they both stood up to greet him.
Ken sat afterwards while Kiara grabbed a tablet on her table and turned it on as she followed him into his office.
Erik loosened the button on his suit jacket before sitting on his chair.
Kiara stood in front of his desk.
He released a scoff as he stared at her clothes.
She was putting on a denim jumpsuit and a pink top underneath it.
Kiara’s smile disappeared and she swallowed.
“What’s my schedule for today?”He asked.
Kiara brought her eyes to the tablet’s screen.
“Um… you’ll be having a meeting with the marketing department from eight thirty am to ten and at twelve pm, you’ll be having a date with Miss Ivy”Kiara said “Hold on,I think I made a mistake, it’s supposed to be a meeting”
“It’s a date”Erik said
“No, it’s a…”Kiara paused when his last sentence became clear in her head “It’s a date?”
