“I’m telling you, Carnage beheaded someone with a piece of glass and after he’d done it he had them cooked and served to the prisoners who were dying of hunger,” Katniss bit into an apple as she drove Meira to the store she spoke of earlier. “This one time I heard he–”

“Stop. Stop talking,” Meira could listen no more. The stories were indeed as stomach sickening as she had warned her about. “I need some time to process this.”

“Okay, but I just wanted to say Carnage had three guys skinned alive and used their skins to make a jacket. Their bones were made into jewelry afterward, like for example, a skull ring carved by himself in fine detail.”

Meira’s ears perked up at that. “A skull ring? Wait, for how long did you say Carnage was in prison?”

“Five years. Why?”

Could it be–no. Impossible. Carnage cannot be Ryat. Her brother isn’t a heartless monster like these stories entail. She wouldn’t believe anything.

“Nothing, just continue.”

“Look girl there are tons of stories of what these boys have done, I don’t remember most of them but I’m telling you what I know. This one happened in jail. When Carnage was there a guard fed him spoiled food, in retaliation he gouged his eyes out with a spoon then shoved them down his throat. He then used a knife he got from Satan knows where to slice his body open, rip his heart out, squeezed all of the bl**d from it into a glass and washed his face with it. The prisoners who witnessed this I’ve heard didn’t sleep for days afterward,” Katniss drove into a parking lot and removed the key to shut the engine off. “He had all the guards in his hands, he sold dr*gs from prison and the money he made he gave each one a cut. He was top dog there and could do anything he wanted. I only know so much because I got links all over you, if know what I’m saying. Don’t tell anyone I told you this stuff, you didn’t hear anything from me.

“The Bloodlust B*st*rds are a tight-knit group of seven boys. Two of them d**d six years ago, they were twins. Heck, they were young but serial k*ll*rs in the making. They’d already pass the test for the MacDonald Triad. As for the remaining five–Carnage, Neon, Korpse, Venom and Bandit–they’re still alive and they run this town. You Füçk with them and end up lifeless the next day. Everyone in Arkville has heard of them. They’re pretty infamous for doing horrible things.”

The two alighted at the same time and met at the front of the car. Meira was shaken up from everything Katniss told her. Carnage is a fitting name for someone who hacked a man’s limbs off while he was forced to watch his wife and daughter being v**lated over and over again. She let Katniss lead her into the store and zoned out as she gave her sister a welcoming hug. The stories made fear grip her like a Boa constrictor. Each group member had a list of unbelievably, inexplicably, and disturbingly sickening things they’d done–and they weren’t short ones either.

“Mei bae, what do you think about this anklet? It’s a little on the expensive side but my sister owns the place she’ll give me a discount so wh@tëver,” she peered at the anklet in her hands, it was gold a one with violet jewels embedded in it. There was also five small butterflies attached to it. “So, what you think? You have good taste I see the way you dress.”

Meira was too traumatized to speak. “I think I’m gonna be sick,” she ran out to vomit by some bushes at the fence.

Katniss chased after her and stood in the sun confused. ‘Dang it, I should’ve kept my mouth shut,’ she told herself and flashed her hair. She ran over to Meira while holding her B@@bs in place.

“Mei bae, are you okay? What happened?” she rubbed circles on her back.

“I don’t wanna hear anything more about them. Don’t tell me anything more. It’s too m–” she puked again.

Katniss chewed her gum slowly and gave Meira a bottle of water when she finished to wash her mouth out. “I won’t tell you anything more I promise, but like…if you can’t handle these things tell me beforehand. You should also know Arkville has a past riddled with bloodshed and v**lence. It has the highest d**th toll in the entire country, it’s a hotspot for gangsters. Gotta be careful.”

“Katniss.”

“Yas?”

“The anklet’s beautiful. Go buy it, let’s go to the supermarket, and then get outta here. I want my mom,” she gurgled water in her mouth then spat it out on the contents she regurgitated from her stomach. “This is not what I was expecting, at all.”

“Seeee, I knew you had good taste. Like, slay girl! Let’s go inside and get you a seat, ya don’t look too good honey,” Katniss helped her inside.

····

She knew it was Ryat, but she refused to believe it was him. She didn’t want to believe her stepbrother–whom she’s here buying a cake for–chained a man to a table and inflicted unspeakable t*rtur*s on him. For example, Carnage was said to have poured boiling oil that just came off the stove all over the man’s face then drowned it in salt, lime juice, and pepper all blended together to form a painful mixture. He also removed the man’s insides to stuff it with hot stones.

It wasn’t true. As bad as Ryat may be, he would never do that.

“I love Cheetos so much,” Katniss dropped over twenty bags of Cheetos into Meira’s shopping cart. “Oh my God are those sour cream Pringles? In you go,” she shoved ten large tins inside, “Poptarts? Lays? Barbeque Doritos? Yasss!” she kept shoving things in until it was full to the brim.

Meira had only come to buy a red velvet cake. After the little argument between her and her brother she felt bad for entering his room without his permission and thus bought a cake out of guilt. She wanted to make amends with him and hopes their relationship would improve from then on. Ryat had a wall built around him, but she hoped he’d let her in. She did after all meant well. He was her brother, she just wanted to be a good sister.

Together the duo went to the cashier and unloaded their things onto the conveyor belt. Once the cashier was finished with the customer in front she pressed a button to get the conveyor belt moving, bring all the stuff to herself so she could cash them. Meira paid for everything and packed them into the grocery bags she had brought while Katniss texted endlessly on her phone.

“Kat, it’s time to go,” she turned to look up a little at Katniss who was the taller friend.

“Why did you pay for me? You thought I couldn’t pay? Girl,” Katniss placed her hands on her hips. “Why did you do that? How much was for everything I’ll pay you back right now.”

“It’s nothing, really. Can we just go?”

Katniss eyed her and took the receipt, after spotting the price which was a mere couple hundred dollars she paid back every dollar and coin to Meira. “Not because I drive a Tayota and you come to school in a limo means I’m poor. I bought that car myself. I’m a hardworking girl.”

“Katniss I never said that please don’t be mad. I just didn’t wanna bother you. I’m sorry,” she looked down.

“Sorry for what? Girl you’re funny, let’s go,” she held her hand bag on her shoulder, grabbed the four bags and walked out leaving Meira behind.

“The m*rder*r and the wh*re. That’s a combo you don’t come across everyday,” the cashier said under her breath but Meira heard and scowled. “Is there something wrong miss? You’re looking at me as if you smelled something bad,” she rolled her eyes and threw more shade, “St*pid teenager.”

“I smelled your nappy @ weave. Instead of talking about my friend and I go find the right shade of concealer for your face you tie-dyed looking miserable hag. Watch your mouth,” Meira hissed and walked out, swaying her hips like Kat does. “St*pid adult.”

The people waiting in like cackled after she left, the cashier was too stunned to speak.

She met Kat at the car loading the things in and eating one of the Pringles she’d bought. The two planned to get into the car but a myriad of motorcycles zoomed pass before they could so. It distracted them, so they walked out the parking lot to look down the road. There was a bar down the road and 90s rap music blasted from it. Kat flashed her hair as she looked over at a curious Meira.

“Kat, who are those?”

“That’s them,” Kat adjusted her handbag and popped a bubble with the gun she constantly chewed on. “The Bloodlust Bastards, also known as the Heartless Boys of Arkville.”

Meira’s eyes widened at that.

At the bar there was a table out covered in money and bottles of alcohol. Burly men covered in tattoos gathered at surrounding tables playing poker, dominos, or other games in which they seemed to be gambling. Numerous cars and bikes lined the bar front. It was a sight that piqued anyone’s interest, but it didn’t take a child to see that they’re gangsters. Kat’s words were pointed to be right when from the four motorcycles guys came off and removed their helmets. Of course she recognized them as the guys that were in her room.

Neon wore his trademark smile as he went to dab up a muscular bald guy with goat horn tattoos on his head. Not too far from him, Venom made his way to the liquor table and took an unopened bottle in his grasp. His muscles were on display in the sleeveless black shirt he donned. Korpse came over to steal the bottle away but Venom didn’t let go, this caused a playful fight that ended with them laughing and sharing the beverage anyway.

Looking at them, Venom and the others, you’d never suspect the things they’d done–if they’d done them anyway. The setting and theme sparked Meira’s interest, she felt the urge to go over there but stopped herself.

At that moment, another bike passed in a black blur. It slowed to a halt before the main liquor table and off the rider came. He unstrapped his protective gear, then took off his helmet. It was…

Ryat.

Meira’s heart warmed and started beating faster, butterflies flew into her stomach to flutter. She hadn’t realized she was widely smiling, but if she did she wouldn’t care. It seems as if she’d forgotten everything Katniss had not too long ago told her. Her excitement to see his handsome, grumpy face again overshadowed everything.

“Please don’t tell me you’ve fallen for that trash too,” Katniss glared at Meira. “Quit staring at him with googly heart eyes. Ugh. That’s so tragic.”

Meira frowned. “What are you even talking about? Fall for who?”

“I saw the way you became lovestruck the moment he took his helmet off. Girl, do you know who that is? That’s Carnage. The same guy I was just telling you about. You can love anyone you want but don’t fall for anyone in that gang, they’re heartless motherFüçkers,” Katniss rolled her eyes and checked her makeup. “I’ve warned so many girls from those boys, none listen, and then they come running back after getting their hearts shattered and spat on. Nah-ah. You’re pure and innocent, I won’t stand back and let you be corrupted by them. I forbid you from interacting with those five, especially Carnage, Venom and Neon–those three are the definitions of DERANGED.”

If only she knew Ryat was her stepbrother, and she’d already interacted with the others. But fall for them? Absolutely not. One heartbreak is already beating the Sh|t out of her, she can’t take another. And why would she fall her stepbrother of all people? No, just no.

However, the sight of him carousing with his friends appeased her. Something down there–she isn’t sure what–was compelling her to go take a look. Just to see what was going on from a closer range, to experience it.

“Can we go take a look? For a little while, please?” Meira faced Katniss. “It’ll be fun.”

Katniss’s mouth dropped to hell. “Have you lost your goddamn mind? Go down where? There? Do even know what that seemingly harmless gathering is? That is a release party Meira!”

She didn’t expect Kat’s response. “Wait, like an album release party? That’s amazing! Friends supporting friends is a good thing. We should totally go say Hi and support the new artist.”

“No. A ‘Prison Release Party’. You’re so clueless it makes my braincells fry. Mei bae, you don’t want to be within a ten mile radius of any of those fellas–as a matter of fact let’s get you outta here. This was a bad idea,” she now aggressively smoothed her hair down with her hands and sprayed cologne on. “Very, very bad idea.”

But, it was too late.

“I’m going down there,” despite her friend’s pleas and warnings Meira reached into the backseat for the cake she bought and started making her way to the bar under the heat of the evening sun.

Katniss was at a loss for words.

This was not going to end well.
