A strange knock on the door opened an entire new world for her. She was introduced to a family she never imagined, a father she never knew existed, a conglomerate family she never thought of being a part in, an entire new world.
It was difficult for her to adjust in her new home with a father who only listens to his wife, a stepmother who could do anything to save her political career, and the worse was her half-sister sister, Ava, who is determined to make her life miserable at home and at school.
To spice up her already miserable life, she was enrolled in a new school – a school where students are classified based on hierarchy. There she entangled with Micheal Russ, the leader of the infamous group known as MASS – an alliance made up of Michael, Austin, Stanley, and Steven: sons of multibillionaires. “This isn’t right, Mike.” She muttered, and he walked closer to her.
“What isn’t right? The kiss, or you running off after a passionate kiss?”
“Everything! You are engaged to Ava!”
“So?” He muttered, and she looked at him.
“Mike…”. She shuddered.
“I make the rules, Lina. I go after what I want, and I get it either the easy or hard way. From now henceforth, you are mine. We’re a couple now, so never run off like that again.” He said, and dragged her close to him smashing his lips on hers, and they kissed passionately like their lives depend on it.

The weather was dark and cloudy; Paulina checked the wall clock to confirm the time for the fifth time and realized that it’s still 6 in the evening, and the cloud was already covered in darkness. Anyone could think it’s past midnight, and she panicked gazing outside the window with hopes that her mother doesn’t get drained in the rain.
Thunder strikes, followed by heavy rain fall, and she ran to the living room to place a pail under the licking zinc. She let out a shallow sigh wondering when her mother would be back from the market where she sells fishes. She couldn’t accompany her because she had a long day at school, and an assignment to finish working on so her mother insisted that she return home straight after school to take care of her own business. But now she started regretting her decision to agree with her.
“I should have gone to her, I would’ve been able to persuade her to leave before the rain pours.” She thought, and started blaming herself.
She dialed her mother’s number but it was out of reach, as expected the village never have accurate service. She wandered around the living room for hours already scared, and started thinking of raising an alarm when she heard a knock on the door. Obviously, it wasn’t her mother so she hurried to open the door wondering if whoever was there have a message to deliver to her from her mother.
She opened the door and was stunned to see two dazzling strangers that are obviously not from their village or the neighboring village.
*
She offered a glass of water each to them, and the woman looked at the dropping water followed by a smirk.
Paulina instantly knew that her presence wasn’t a pleasant one. But what could such a sophisticated woman, in company of a man who might be likely her bodyguard want in their humble home if she didn’t knock at the wrong door.
“Good evening, madam. I don’t know you, and I doubt if you knew me either. I welcomed you in because I felt it’s impolite to question you in the rain.” She started, and the woman chuckled – which likely means she wasn’t there by mistake, but she had an unfriendly business to discuss.
“You are so kind… just like your mother.” The woman said, and Paulina looked at her immediately, wondering how she knew her mother.
“How did you know my mother?” She asked, and the woman chuckled softly.
“Paulina Andrew’s, right?” The woman asked, and the man gave her a file that contains her biography.
“You… you… you run a background check on me?” She shuddered already scared. “Who are you?” She shouted, and stood up ready to alert the neighbors.
“Relax, darling. You should be more concerned about your mother. It’s past her regular time to return home, and the rain is pouring heavily. Any accident could occur.” She said, scaring Paulina more.
“What are you talking about? My mother is probably still at the market waiting for the rain to subside before leaving.”
The woman chuckled, and shakes her head. “I see… you don’t even have a tv, how can you be updated?” She teased, and the man gave Paulina a tablet.
Before she could look at the screen, she heard a hard knock on the door, and the door opened even before she could respond to it – to deliver her nightmare.
“Pauli, is your mother home?” Ms. Rena their neighbor asked.
.
Ms. Rena and Paulina’s mother sells fishes in the market together, and they always leave home and return back together everyday.
.
“Ms. Rena, I’m supposed to ask you. You and mum are supposed to be together.”
“Oh, God. I left her at the market when my son came down with fever, I had to take him to the hospital and your mother promised to help me pack.”
“Oh… she isn’t home yet. She is probably stranded at the market because of the rain.”
“Nooooo… people saw her leave the market, and the next bus had an accident, your mo…-“
“What?” Paulina cut in. “My mother was involved in an accident ? Don’t joke around Ms. Rena, you left my mother at the market and she couldn’t leave because of the rain. Nothing happened to my mother.”
“She got on the bus, Paulina. And there was an accident.” Ms. Rena cried.
“Noooooooooooo….” Paulina wailed, and Ms. Rena failed to console her.
*
They went to the accident scene, and they couldn’t confirm her mother’s body. The accident was very fatal that most of the victims body were burnt down.
They couldn’t find her mother’s body but they were able to recognize her because a bracelet she always had on. Paulina didn’t know the history behind the bracelet, all her mother told her was that it was the last gift she received from her mother, and promised to give it to her after highschool.
“Mummmm…”. She cried, and took the bracelet.
“This is your mother’s bracelet.” Those around said.
“Nooooooo…. Mummy….” She cried.
*
She was escorted back home by the strangers, and met the living room flooded – the pail under the licking zinc fell but she couldn’t even do anything. Her head was blank, wishing that everything was a nightmare that she would wake up from.
“Darling, your mother is gone, but you aren’t alone. You have a family that have been searching for you all these years.” The woman said, and Paulina stared at her blankly.
“Take a look at this.” She said, and the man dropped pictures on the table.
Different pictures of her mother while she was younger, with a man. They both look happy in the pictures, and her mother looked different – she was all dressed up.
“Your father is waiting for you.” The woman said, and Paulina looked at her.
“My father…”. She whispered, talking for the first time since they left the accident scene.
“Yes, darling. Your father.” The woman said, and the man with her gave Paulina a DNA test result which showed 99.9999999999% matched of the two sample tested.
“Your mother left when she was pregnant with you, and your father has searched endless for you. Who knows that you existed somewhere in this small village.” The woman said, and Paulina looked at her.
“You. Who are you?” She asked.
“Your new mother.” The woman replied all smiles.

STANFORDS’ MANSION***
*
Paulina alighted from the fancy car, and looked around the mansion that the car pulled over. Her mother was gone, she had no other family so accepting the new family that came to find her was a blessing to her, but to top it all, her supposed new family are Billoniares. She glanced around blankly wondering the kind of life waiting for her in the new world she found herself within a blink of an eye.
“Come inside, darling.” The woman said, and gestured a maid to collect her luggage- a small bag that contains most of her things, and the valuables her mother left behind.
*
She trailed behind the woman, as they emerged into the paradise in disguise of a house.
The woman asked her to wait behind, and she took her time to look around before the woman returned with a man – the man in the picture with her mother.
“Who… who’s she?” The man asked, and her face fell – her supposed father didn’t even know of her existence.
“Happy birthday, honey. This was the birthday present I was preparing for you, so it came late. Meet Paulina, your daughter with Charlotte.” The woman said, and his eyes widen.
“My… daughter?” The man shuddered
Obviously he never knew she existed, so something was wrong somewhere. It only means that her stepmother was the one who knew about her existence and brought her here, but for what reason? Was she just being kind?
A lot of questions run on her mind, but she decide to ignore it all, because she could never find an answer by thinking about it.
“That bracelet… you’re truly Charlotte’s daughter.” The man said, and she touched her bracelet before looking at him.
“Don’t be dramatic, there are a lot of time for that. Paulina, you should freshen up first.” The woman said, and gestured a maid to escort her away.
*
Paulina was escorted to the most beautiful and elegant room she could never dream of. She took her time to look around and opened the wardrobe that was already filled with clothes and other necessities.
“You can call me if you need anything, ma’am.” The maid said.
“Wait! Someone collected my luggage when I arrived, do you know where she kept it?” She asked, and the maid shook her head.
“No ma’am, but I’ll help you ask around.”
“Ok, thank you.”
*
She took her time to look around, and started wishing her mother was there. After wailing for few minutes, she went to freshen up when a maid came to fetch her, and she was escorted to a different living room; there her supposed father and stepmother were.
“You now look like a Stanford now, come take a seat darling.” The woman said, and she nodded before she obliged.
“Well… I didn’t introduce myself properly earlier, I’m Grace Packard Stanford, and as I said earlier, I’m your new mother, and he is chairman Paul Stanford, your father. But that’s only going to be between us.” Ms. Grace said, and Paulina looked at her. “You are an illegitimate daughter of my husband past affair that we just knew of, and you recently lost your mother which means we are your only family now. So, in order to save the face of this honorable family, and also shield yourself from scandals, you are going to remain Paulina Andrew, a pitiful teenager we adopted after the tragic passing of her mother.” She added, and passed a document to Paulina. “Sign that, my husband signature is already there as a sign of his approval.”
Paulina looked at Ms. Grace, and her supposed father who avoided eye contact with her since she got there.
“Ma’am, may I ask why you came looking for me? I doubt if my father knew of my existence as you claimed.” She said, and her father looked at her – his expression was blank and unreadable.
“Because you could be a barrier in my election. I’m running for mayor, my husband having an illegitimate child would banter my election, so it’s best I’ve my weakness under control. Is that enough to answer your question?” Ms. Grace replied, and Paulina stared at her speechlessly. “I’m impatient, darling. Let’s make this quick.”
“What if I don’t sign this? What if I want to return back home?”
“This is your new home now, home is where your family are. We’re your new family now. Even if you leave now, you can’t cause me much problems, but you could also save yourself and grab this new home. Many people would love to be in your shoes. I won’t bother you, neither would I protect you. You aren’t existing to me, but I want you under my watch. It’s a win-win for the both of us, darling. Even your father isn’t against it. Don’t act all righteous, it’s not like you have any other choice.” Ms. Grace said.
Paulina sniffed in, and looked at them before picking the pen. Ms. Grace was right, it’s not like she had any other choice.
“Good girl. Now we can live as one big happy family. Welcome to the family, darling.” Ms. Grace said, and stretched her hand for a shake.
Paulina hesitated for a while before accepting it. Ms. Grace was right, they are families now.
*
Paulina tossed and turned on her bed thinking of how her life would be in the house where she doesn’t seem to belong – a nonchalant father who allow his wife have her way, and a stepmother that is willing to do anything for her political career. While thinking about it all, she was thankful that there was no stepbrother or stepsister, otherwise her new world would be fit for a fairytale. She was still deep in thoughts when she heard a knock on the door – a maid was outside to escort her to the dinning hall.
She arrived at the large dinning hall, and met her new family there, words couldn’t describe her shock when she saw a girl about her age seated in the dinning as well – now she is living in a fairy tale.
“Mum, who is she?” The girl blurted. .
“Ava, be nice. She is the one I told you about, your sister.”
“What sister? This must be a joke, mum.” Ava shouted, and Paulina bite her lips nervously.
“Paulina, darling. Take the seat, next to Ava.” Ms. Grace said, and Ava glared at her.
“Mum, you can’t be serious. First, you made me return from England, and now you are introducing me to a sister?”
“Ava, maintain the dinning rule.” Chairman Stanford muttered.
“Dad, what were you doing when she brought in this?”
“Ava, she is same age as you, so help her adjust properly.” Ms. Grace said.
“Is this why you ask me to return? To help dad’s illegitimate daughter fit in?”
“I ask you to return so I can keep a close watch on you, I don’t want you to act careless in England and ruin things for me. My competitors are not joking at all. That’s why you will also help Paulina adjust, just until the election is over. Then… you can return freely to England if you want to.”
“You take care of your election, I’m not obligated to anything.” Ava shouted and hit Paulina, sending her to the ground before leaving in anger.
“Help yourself up, darling.” Ms. Grace said, all smiles.
Paulina managed to get up, and started wondering how she would survive in that house.
“I already work your transfer to a new school. Holland High. Only few people are privileged to attend the school because it’s meant for conglomerates only. Welcome to your new world, darling.” Ms. Grace said, and Paulina looked at her.
**
**
Paulina arrived at school, and all eyes fell on her. Thanks to Ava who pushed her out of the car to stain her uniform, she stand out.
She blinked her lashes nervously and bite her lips wondering how to attend classes on her first day in her stained uniforms. She was lost in thoughts looking at all the disgusting glare sent at her.
👤”Who’s she?”
👤”When do peasants get to attend our school?”
👤”I thought only one scholarship student is accepted per session.”
👤”Gosh, I gotta transfer or she leaves.”
The students murmured, and some started taking pictures and videos of her.
“Gosh, you stink. Change to that.” Ava said, and threw some clothes at her.
👤”Oh, my. It’s Ava.”
👤”Ava Stanford is back.”
👤”Ava is back.”
The students shouted, and started forming a circle around them.
*
Paulina looked around before bending down to pick the clothes, and Ava stepped on her.
“There… that’s where you belong, you belong under my feet. So know your place.” Ava blurted, and the students gasped and started taking videos.
The hallway suddenly became silent, and everyone started to pave way. The only person that could make that possible was Michael Russ, the leader of MASS and also the owner of the school.
Fours boys emerged the hallway walking majestically until they got to the scene, and Ava glared at them.
“Ouwww… Ava is back.” Austin, one of the MASS said, and Michael stared at her emotionless.
“Pave way.” He muttered, his voice soft but commanding.
👤”What’s going to happen now?“
👤”Do you think Ava would pave way for Mike?”
👤”Of course he is Michael, the only son of chairman Russ, and the owner of the school. Why won’t she?”
👤”They used to be close in first year.”
👤 “She was his ex.”
“Why is it getting noisy here?” Michael lashed, and everyone kept mute.
“Ava, why don’t you wrap this up and grab some snacks with us before attending class. We could skip the first class.” Austin said, and Ava glared at him taking him aback. “Oops, I take that back.” He muttered, and winked at her.
Micheal walked closer to her with just few inches gap between them, while Paulina sobbed silently on the floor wishing she could teleport away from there.
“What’s going on here?” A teacher asked approaching them, and all the students dismissed, excluding the MASS, Ava, and Paulina who is still weeping with Ava foot on her.
“Oh…. Mr. Russ, Miss Stanford, the both of you can continue your conversation later, class already started. And Miss Stanford you still have to complete your transfer paperwork.” The teacher said.
They both ignored rye teacher glaring at each other while Paulina weeped silently, wondering if she was invisible to them.
