Ashely hugged herself tightly, sitted on the red couch looking around Lucille’s neat apartment. On the table in front of her laid a remote control and a drug in a white nylon — something Lucille had stopped by the pharmacy for.

“Here.” She looked up to see Lucille holding out a glass of water to to her.

“Thank you.” She drank from the glass slowly. Lucille had changed into large brown sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. She proceeds to the kitchen and opens the birth control pills, popping two into her mouth and swallowing it with water.

After rinsing both cups, Lucille returns to the parlor in hopes of getting Ashely to open up. For her to walk down the road without direction or concentration, then something really bad had happened.

“Are you okay?” Ashely nods slowly. Her eyes already teary remembering her fight with Daniel. She had never seen him so — void of emotions. She couldn’t help the sob that escaped her throat, then another and soon she was lying on Lucille’s shoulders been consoled.

“It’s okay… It’s going to be okay…” Lucille whispers as she rubs Ashley’s shoulders.

“A-Am s-sorry.” Ashely hicupped, “I-I” she didn’t even know what to say. “I had a bad breakup.”

“Oh… Am so sorry,” Honestly, Lucille felt akward. Of course, she knew what it is like to have your heartbroken and by the looks of things, whoever Ashely was with—she loved with all her heart.

Suddenly, she laughed nervously. “Oh, God. I feel so stupid.” She groans.

“Falling in and out of love isn’t stupid,” Lucille chuckles “it’s just a way of learning who and how you chose the right person to spend the rest of your life with.”

“If this person has hurt you so badly, then he’s not the right person for you. All you need to do is move on.” Lucille smiles warmly.

Ashely wiped her tears away, “what if, even though the person hurt you—you can’t stop loving them.” She questioned.

“It depends…”

“On?” Ashely urged.

“It depends on what destiny has planned. You know,” she turned to her “I’ve been hurt badly before. Although, the person that hurt me didn’t know that his actions and words cut deep. And I swore never to feel so strongly again but still destiny had other plans.” She sighs.

“Sometimes, our love ones hurt us but everyone deserves a second chance but, it depends on how they earn it and how much they’ve changed and grown as a person.” She placed a hand on Ashely’s shoulder, “if the man you love ever realizes his terrible mistake. Make sure you know deeply: that—you still love him and he has changed and worked towards becoming a better person.”

Ashely smiled widely and hugged Lucille tightly. Her words were what she needed. She couldn’t give up on Daniel but this break is probably for the best. Maybe, when he realizes that his thirst for vengeance will get him nowhere, he’ll come around.

“Thank you Lucille.”

“Your welcome,” she glances at the window. “It’s late, you can stay here for the night. The guest room is right next to mine.” Lucille gestures to the room down the passage.

•••••••••••••••••••••

Ashely plopped down on the neatly laid bed in the guest room. It wasn’t too small nor was it too big, it was just the right size. After her talk with Lucille, she had a quick shower and luckily, the extra nightwear fit her fine.

And now, she is bored. She tried not to think about Daniel but her mind wandered off each time.

What was he doing?

Is he missing me?

Is he thinking about me?

Did he go through with his plan?

Well at least she knew the answer to the last question. Of course, he had gone through with his plan. Only heavens knows what he is planning to do to his father.

She jumped to her feet and looks around the room for a little while before deciding to explore the house, not before taking her phone with her. Quickly wearing the fluffy white slippers and closed the door quietly as she left the room.

She could hear the tap water running, signifying that Lucille is doing the dishes. Ashely placed her hand on Lucille’s door, hesitating for a moment. “I’ll just look around and leave.” She convinced herself and walks into the room.

Lucille’s style is impeccable and her favourite colour is Green. Almost everything in room, from the bedsheets and matching pillowcases to the round carpet on the floor and the floral curtains. Ashely traced the edge of the bed as she moped around the room.

She didn’t know why she was drawn to the room in the first place, there is nothing out of order. Satisfied with her conclusion, she turned and is about to walk away when the moon light shone on her drawer. Something caught her eye— a wooden plank laid down?

She lingers towards it, on getting closer; she saw it is actually a picture frame laid down. Slowly, she picks it up and seeing the picture—almost drops it. A young Lucille smiles brightly at the older woman who hugged her tightly.

“Oh, God…” Ashely cried out, her voice cracked. Lucille is Daniel’s sister! The same picture that Daniel has kept all these while, is the same picture, she is looking at. But, the reports stated she is dead. How is this possible?

Quickly, she takes a picture using her phone and drops the frame and bolts downstairs almost slamming into Lucille. She was breathing heavily as she stared at Lucille. Lucille Dumont! Of course, they had the same surname but Dumont is a very popular last name in France and you can come across more than one person bearing the name.

Lucille stared right back, “what happened?” She questions, seeing Ashely looked frightened and pale as if she had seen a ghost.

Ashely is tongue tied. What was she going to say? ‘that she was dating her long lost brother—who is now out for vegence?’ “n-nothing.” She stuttered.

A silence followed, with Lucille wondering why Ashely rushed down like that and was still standing in her way. Ashely thinking of how she is going to tell Lucille…everything.

“D-Do you have a brother?” She blurted out before she could stop herself from chickening out.

Lucille’s brows creased in confusion. “A brother? No. Why do you ask?”

“Lucille, you can tell me the truth. Please…tell me the truth.” Ashely pleads.

“No. I don’t have a brother.” She answered through gritted teeth, clenching her fists to keep herself from taking out her anger on Ashely. Something about the question asked made Lucille remember her father’s words that day. Of course, Dominique had given her some reasons to believe she might have a brother but now she knows she doesn’t.

All her life, she has been alone. She didn’t need someone now. “No, excuse me.” She brushed her shoulder as she walked to her room briskly, slamming the door shut.

Ashely didn’t need a seer to know that Lucille had obviously lost her memory. Did that mean she didn’t remember the accident that claimed her mother’s life? Ashely did not have an answer but she was going to find out by getting closer to Lucille.

But first she needed to inform someone. Immediately she dials Damien’s number.

He picked up at the first ring.

“Hello, Damien?”

“Ashely,” he said tiredly. “Why are you calling me by this time?!” He whisper yelled.

“Am sorry but I need to tell you something important.”

“Look, you know that we can’t talk. Daniel would kill me if he found out that we kept in touch.” His tone panicked.

“I know, I know.” She sighed, she could understand his reason. It was not because she and Daniel had broken up but he is a very jealous person by nature and wouldn’t hesitate to punish Damien if he found out they were speaking to each other. “But it’s important.” She added.

“What’s going on?” He sounds worried now. She took a deep breath and told him everything she found, he doubted her at first until she sent him the picture to see for himself.

“Oh fûck!!” He cursed loudly. Damien had been decieved somehow. Daniel going mad with vegenance leading to him breaking up with Ashely without a thought was his fault.

“Don’t blame your self Damien.” It was as if she read his mind, “none of this is your fault. There is an enemy we don’t know about and we need to act fast to take the person down and reunite the siblings.”

“But…how? We know she’s alive and with the evidence, we can easily prove it to Daniel too but she doesn’t remember anything and if she doesn’t remember or want too… Then it’ll lead to another raging Daniel.”

“I know… Am going to get close to her and find out what exactly she remembers. While you figure out who conned you before Daniel does!”

Click. She hangs up. Tapping the phone on her hand impatiently, pondering on how she is going to get back on Lucille’s good side again. She had to find out what was going on… For Daniel and Lucille.

?????????????

Lucille laid wide awake, tossing in her bed thinking of Ashelys’ words. ‘please Lucille, tell me the truth.’ But she is telling the truth, she doesn’t have a brother and even if she did — he would be long gone by now just like her mother.

With that thought, she forcefully closed her eyes and it wasn’t long before sleep came over. Once again, the memories she had struggled to hide resurfaced their ugly heads.

A young Lucille whimpers, scampering towards the wall to hide away from the woman approaching towards her. “Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. You don’t listen Lucille and now I’ll have no choice but to teach you a lesson.” She said menacingly.

“N-no, please…” She begged. A hard slap lands on her cheeks making her cry out loudly.

“SHUT UP!! YOU STUPID CHILD. I’ll teach you a lesson today.” She smiled showing her brown teeth.

“Ma’am please…” Her pleading words only seemed to anger her the more.

Slap.

“How dare you call me that,” she said through gritted teeth. “You dare disobey me?!”

“No! No!” She pleads realizing her horrible mistake. “Mistress no, PLEASE!” Unfortunately, it is already late. Her anger already taking control as she hits Lucille until her cheeks turn red.

The other kids stood watching helplessly as the woman hit her over and over again. They couldn’t interfere or their fate would be much worse, all they could do was offer her pitying and sympathetic looks.

That night, she didn’t eat dinner. She had almost starved if it weren’t for a nice blonde girl who saved her a mossole of bread.

♡♡♡

Lucille woke up gasping, covered in sweat. She couldn’t believe that after all these years, the memory had managed to surface. The orphanage. A place where children who have lost their parents go to—to be taken care off. For Lucille, it was a nightmare.

After the accident, she had been taken to the STAR ORPHANAGE. At first, she was comfortable— she was given everything and anything she needed but at that the time, but after a little while. She was forced to work to earn her meals and by the time night came, she was exhausted.

The mistress was the most brutal person, she’d ever met. She was a saint when visitors arrived with money and charity donations to the orphanage and after they left she was a demon. Lucille had vowed that once she got out of the orphanage, she’d help take the mistress down. Unfortunately, her reputation was stainless and without concrete evidence (even though she was an orphan there) the police hadn’t taken her case seriously and the other children were far too sacred to speak up. All they wanted to do was move on with their lives.

She hoped that after all these years, the mistress was dead. But the nagging voice at the back of her mind told her otherwise…

Dominique flipped the pages of the docvment rampantly. A deep scowl shone on his face as he signed the docvment. His assistant stood in the far corner, careful not to say or do anything that’ll anger him.

Today, he is in a very bad mood. He made that clear by firing a worker for brushing lightly against him, accidentally and barked at the receptionist for not sitting well. Everyone was walking on eggshells today and it was worse for Stacey.

Slowly, she scrolled her tablet and turned to him. “Sir, you have a meeting with–”

“Cancel all my meetings today,” he interjected “am not in the mood.”

Stacey nodded, sending a silent prayer of thanks knowing her boss will be leaving soon. She doesn’t want to lose her job. “Of course, Sir.”

Dominique sighs, rubbing his temples tiredly. It’s been two days since he last saw Lucille and the fact that he was missing her was an understatement.

He craved her warmth. Her touch and to hear her angelic voice. d@mn it! He tried to contact her but she hadn’t picked his calls. Sighing, he signs the last docvment before placing it neatly on his desk. Staying in his home office to relieve the stress.

The door clicks open quietly. This gets his attention as he looks up quickly to see Lucille enter in – smiling widely. Dominique stood up immediately and rushed to her, “I missed you!” He carried her up and spun her around.

She giggled, “I missed you too.” They shared a passionate short kiss. Dominique pressed his lips against her forehead as he dropped her down to the ground.

“Where have you been!?” He said dramatically.

“I had to take some days off to rest.”

“But, still you could’ve called.”

“Am sorry…”

He pouts, “I’ve missed you so much and I want time for just the two of us. How about lunch? Just the two of us.”

“Are you asking me out Mr Monet?” She joked.

And without thinking, he answered “yes I am.”
