CHAPTER SIXTY ONE

CARMEN’S POV

I cuddled beside Cardo all night, waiting for him to sleep off before I can make any move of leaving the house.

My father’s men whom I had working for me, have been feeding me with latest news about Lucia all day, where she is, what she did, what she have to do, until this night when they informed me about her presence in her house. Not heavily guarded as they used to do for her.

“Should we get everything ready?” They asked me while I sighed, knowing that there’s no way I’d leave the house without alerting attention from Cardo. Not like he can stop me, but I didn’t want him to slow me down.

I know he has a lot on his plate and I didn’t want to add to it neither did I want him to use his soft nature on any of my plans again.

“Yeah, get everything ready. I will be out before you know it.” I said while one of my father’s most trusted men touched my arm with his face showing off his concern for me.

“Your father is very worried about you.”he said while I sighed again, taking his hand off mine.

“I know,” I said, my voice soft. “But I’m doing what I need to do. I’m doing what’s right.”

He looked at me, his eyes full of doubt. “Are you sure about this?” he asked. “Are you sure this is what we should do? You’re pregnant.”

I frowned at him when I heard that word. “You don’t tell me what to do simply because I’m pregnant.”

“I’m sorry, it’s just that it might be dangerous out there.”

“And I love dangerous situation.” I said and took three steps away from him. “Be ready, I might get out before you know it.” I said and I watched him nod his head severally before I went inside.

And I met Cardo, struggling to sleep, or maybe struggling to stay awake, “Can’t sleep?” I asked and he turned to look at me.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Not really,” he said, his voice heavy with fatigue. “I just can’t get my mind to shut off.”

I sat down on the bed next to him, and I looked at him, my eyes full of worry. “Are you okay?” I asked, my voice full of concern for him. “You look exhausted.”

He smiled weakly, “I’m fine,” He said, trying to sound more convincing than I felt. “I just need to get some rest.”

“Then do it.” I said and lay down on the bed, soon, he joined me. He seemed to have considered my words a little. “I wish I could get some rest,” he said, closing his eyes. “But I just can’t seem to relax. I keep thinking about everything that’s happening, and I can’t stop worrying.”

I hesitated for a moment, then I reached out and took his hand in mine. He opened his eyes and looked at me, a question in his gaze. “Cardo,” I said, my voice soft. “You don’t have to worry about anything.

“But I do,” he said, his voice firm. “I worry about you, about the baby, about the company. I worry about everything, and I can’t seem to stop.”

I sighed, knowing that he was right. He was under a lot of stress, and it was understandable that he would be worried, though he annoyed me earlier. “I know,” I said, squeezing his hand gently. “But you need to take care of yourself, you need to get some rest.”

He looked at me, a small smile on his face. “You’re probably right,” he said, his eyes beginning to droop.

As I watched him start to fall asleep, I felt my own eyelids grow heavy. I knew I should get up, that I have work to do, I need to be outside, to be in Lucia’s house, doing what should be done, but I couldn’t bring myself to move.

Instead, I lay down next to him, keeping my hand in his. Soon, I was drifting off to sleep, comforted by his presence and his warmth.

I woke up some time later, by the beeping of my phone, my men must have waited for me for a long time. I blinked my eyes, disoriented by the brightness of my phone screen. I turned to look at Cardo, to realize that I was still holding his hand while he was very much asleep.

I gently removed my hand from his and checked the time, some minutes past eleven in the midnight. I must’ve slept for a long time.
I notified my men and then carefully got down from the bed. I covered him carefully with the duvet while he stirred and tossed from side to side before he finally relaxed and stopped moving.

I went to my closet, I took out the clothes meant for missions like this and began to wear them. I tied my hair with my hair band and gave one last look at Cardo before disappearing out of the house.

I grabbed her hair while she trembled, her eyes as shaky as ever. From every of her tremors and fears, I got more fueled by anger. I wanted to snap her into two if that will force out every truth I wanted to learn from her.

“I will talk!” She suddenly bursted out, “just release my hair.”

“So you care more about your hair than anything in the whole wide world?”

“All you need is for me to speak, right?”

I sat back down on my chair. I didn’t know she will give into talking so quickly. I thought I will have to torture her all night, which I was so ready for but she made me my work a little bit easier by giving in so quickly, maybe the little coercion I did earlier is making become so easy.

“Okay, start talking.” I turned to my men. “Set up the camera, we’re broadcasting this moment live for everyone to see the kind of person that she is. ” And they proceeded to do as I asked before she suddenly:

“Hell no!” She bursted out, her eyes growing up in anger immediately.

I smirked, did she think I’m here to joke around about this moment?

“You can’t do that!” she said, her voice trembling with fear. “You can’t broadcast this live, you can’t expose me like that. It’s not fair, it’s not right.”

“Is it fair for you to poison me? You almost took my life away or maybe you did, because I think the old Carmen isn’t here anymore. This Carmen right here is as brutal as she have never been and I don’t give a Fuçk about your life and I can tear it to pieces if I want to. ” I said, my voice hard. “Is it right for you to be fueled by jealousy, mess with me, mess with my man!!”

Even my baby!! But I didn’t want to mention that. I just felt my stomach briefly and fired another question at her. “Is it right for you to plot all this, is it fair?”

She looked away from me, her jaw clenching. I could see the conflict in her eyes, the battle between what she wanted and what was right.

“I’ll tell you what you want to know,” she said finally, her voice trembling. “Just please, don’t expose me. I don’t want the world to see me like this, I don’t want to be a spectacle.”

“That will be decided after you tell me everything infront of the camera, I will decide if I want to broadcast it live or not,” I said, my voice firm. “I’m not promising you anything yet.”

She nodded, her eyes downcast. I could see the shame and the regret written all over her face, and I knew that I was finally getting through to her. “Okay,” she said, her voice small.

“Where do you want me to start?” she asked, her eyes meeting mine. I could see the fear in her eyes, the fear of what I would do with the information she was about to give me. I don’t know why she should be worried about that, it’s left for me to decide what to do with that, she should be contented already for I won’t broadcast this moment live as I wanted to do initially.

At least I’m giving her a chance to convince me on why I should not do it. “Start from the beginning,” I said, my voice calm and steady. “Tell me how it all started.”

She took a deep breath, and I could see her gathering her thoughts, trying to figure out where to start. Finally, she began to speak, her words slow and measured.

Few weeks ago, after she met us at the club and I humiliated her, she came outside with utmost fury, ready to do anything to get to me. She was approached by two men, a very gracious offer which she couldn’t turn down.

“The men had a leader,” she said, “I think that’s the uncle or the brother of Cardo.”

“A leader? You know him?” I asked while she shook her head in the negative.

“No, never got to see his face,” she said, “But I know his voice.” She added with a hopeful sign in her voice.

“How’s the voice like?” I asked bringing out recorded voices from the wiretappings I stole from Cardo’s men. I played out all the voices to her. “Any of the voices which sound similar to the ones you heard, notify me.” I said while she nodded her head.

After thirty minutes of fruitless hearings, “This one!” She shouted out to my surprise. I replayed the voice.

“You mean this voice?” I asked while she nodded.
I gasped, this is Uncle Lucas voice, the man who do nothing but talk less in every gathering and in every situation.

“Yes, this is the voice I heard in the car that day and he offered me a request. If only I could mess with Cardo, he will bring you to me.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. So Uncle Lucas was the one behind all of this, the one who had been manipulating everyone all along. I felt sick to my stomach, and I could feel my rage building. But I had to stay calm, I had to get all the information I could before I take my next action.

But that plan failed. He asked for something else. Playing on her weakness, she asked her to poison me in exchange for Cardo. They offered her a good deal, a deal that she knew was wrong but one that she couldn’t turn down.

They promised her Cardo which is all she ever wanted, to win back his love and stay with him just like the old times, Cardo is everything she ever wanted. All she had to do was agree to their terms. She knew that, what they were asking of her was wrong, but she was blinded by her anger, her need for revenge, jealousy and to take me out and she failed to reason.

She agreed to their terms, and they gave her instructions. She followed them hastily, not realizing the damage she was doing, the harm she was causing. Until she had to realize later that she was played by him.

Aggravated by anger, I don’t know about anything else, but the anger was almost choking me, “Post the video.” I ordered while she gasped and snapped out her hands immediately, began to plead.

“Please don’t post this video. Please, I beg of you, you’re gonna end my acting life if you do that.”

I stood up, my next stop is at Uncle Lucas, the brain behind all these mess. How easy it was to get this piece of information!

I clenched my fist. Not wanting to hear anything about Lucia’s pleas. “I will do anything for you. I can tell you anything you wanna know. Bernadette is involved, she approached me two days after you were poisoned and made me end the waiter’s life so she won’t spill the truth.”

“Bernadette??”

“Yes, she is in this too. She knows that you’re poisoned. I think she’s acting alongside the man who came to me. I think there’s more to this than meets the eye and I can help you get any information you want if you spare me.”

She looked so pitiful, perspirating greatly while struggling to beg at my feet. So her acting life was ever this important to her and yet, fueled by greed and jealousy, she got herself smeared up in this mess.

“Please__”

“And what made you think that I don’t have enough men to do my bidding? I have every source to get information.”

“You will still need me. I can get you Bernadette, I can make her start talking as quickly as you can think.”

“The only thing I can promise you Lucia is this, you won’t go down alone, I will not post this video now and that’s because I’m giving you a chance to confess your sins to the world by yourself.”

She was shaky, as if she wanted to collapse as she heard me say those words to her. She had begun to cry. “I’m giving you three days to right your wrong by yourself.” I switched off the camera and took out the memory card. “Else, you won’t love this episode of yours trending on social media very soon.” I threatened, grinding my teeth as I stormed out of the house.

I stopped as I came out of the house feeling the sudden urge to throw up, first time since I found out about my pregnancy. I held it back as I turned to my men.

“Dig into Uncle Lucas, do everything you can to get information on him.”

“How about Bernadette?”

“I will use Cardo’s security guards do that one for me. So gather information on Lucia and leave Bernadette to me.” I said and sluggishly got into the car.

My mind solely on Lucas, how much he’s neck deep into every mess happening in the house.

What’s his achievement in the long run? What is he trying to prove? Uncle Lucas is Mr. Alejandro’s half brother, more or less an unwanted child of the family but was gladly accepted by the family since he had nowhere to go, Mr. Alejandro couldn’t take him away, not when he’s the father’s son, and he proved himself to be a good son and a good brother for all these years.

Or was that all a facade?

I guess it’s actually a facade if what Lucia is telling me is the truth.
And if it is so, then I’m going to bring to him what he have always wanted in his life.

First thing first, let’s meet him. Bernadette can be saved for later, but for now, I need to know how deep he is into all of this mess, what he knows and what level he operates so that if I’m gonna make him fall, he will have to fall flat and never able to come back to his feet again.

RICARDO’S POV

I stirred on the bed, I felt my other side of the bed to feel the warmth of Carmen lying next to me but I didn’t feel anything, it was like an hollow empty space lying beside me, so I had to open my eyes.

I blinked, and the darkness of the room slowly gave way to the glow of the digital clock. It was 3:00 am. I rolled over, expecting to find Carmen’s warm body next to me, but the bed was empty. I sat up, my heart beginning to race. Where is she?

I got out of bed and walked to the bathroom, opening it and peering into the large bathroom. I saw no sign of her, and my panic began to grow. I walked out into the hallway, calling her name, but there was no answer.

My heart was pounding as I continued to search the house, my mind racing with worry. Where could she be? Why wasn’t she here? Did something happen to her? I h@tëd to think about that but each passing minute made that thought to grow wilder. I need to find her, I need to make sure she was safe.

I checked the kitchen, the living room, the den, and the library, but there was no sign of her. My panic grew as I walked back to the bedroom, the room where I had last seen her. I looked around, trying to think, trying to figure out where she could be.

She was lying next to me, so how come I have to look for her now? Did anything happen while I was asleep?

I wanted to alert the guards, I didn’t want to risk anything, not even her, when I heard a sound coming from my study.
The panic inside me was replaced by dread as I walked to the door of my study. I stood there, my hand on the knob, feeling a sense of foreboding as I turned it and opened the door.

My heart was in my throat as I walked into the room, and I felt a rush of relief when I saw her sitting at my desk, her head on the desk.

I moved towards her, my heart still racing. “Carmen?” I said softly, not wanting to startle her. “Are you okay?”

She lifted her head, and I saw the drowsiness in her eyes. When did she come here? Did she have troubles with sleeping. “I’m sorry,” she said, her voice breaking. “I didn’t mean to come here and sleep.”

I sat down next to her, taking her hand in mine. “It’s okay,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

I held her by her waist and led her to the bed, pulling back the covers. I sat down next to her and she lay down, curling up into a ball. I pulled the covers up to her shoulders, then sat there, watching her as she fell asleep.

I leaned over and kissed her gently on the forehead, then stood up and turned off the light. “Sleep okay?” I said when she suddenly opened her eyes and grabbed my hand.

“Cardo??”

“Hmmm.”

“I need you to make love to me.”

What? At this moment?

“Carmen?”
