CHAPTER 63&64
It all came like a dream. A dream no one would ever wish for.
Trisha went on her knees, soaked with sweat and tears.
She looks traumatized… like all these were just her imagination. The sound in her heartbeat drummed in her, drowning the noise around her.
By then, police and emergency sirens filled the air.
Trisha’s eyes never left Bryan. It felt so unreal seeing him on the ground.
Motionless. Still.
“Bryan! Miller!”she screamed, her breath hitched as she shook him.
“No… no, Bryan”she whispered, pulling him up… even when she couldn’t.
A few people gathered. Someone tried pulling her up but she flinched, hugging Bryan with her life.
The blood on his chest stained her. She didn’t stop. Even when the paramedics got close.
“You made me promise not to leave you, Miller… Please don’t leave me, please”she cried.
A sharp cry tore from someone immediately there was a loud gunshot.
A running dude fell to the grass, throwing his sniper rifle away.
He was grabbed by the cops, manacled immediately.
“Yolanda sent me to do it. She gave me a million pounds to do it! He wasn’t my target, I wanted to kill the girl, not him!”he screamed in pain as he was taken away, limping.
Bryan was successfully carried onto the stretcher by the paramedics. Trisha tried following them but a medic blocked her.
“You have to give us space,”he said.
“But…but…”she stammered in tears.
“Trisha”July tapped her behind, Jeremy stood beside her.
“I called the ambulance. July called the police”he said.
Trisha looked at them and back at the medic who tapped her.
“We have to work on him,”he said and followed the others. Trisha’s eyes never left Bryan as he was rolled in the ambulance, the door was shut.
“C’mon, I’ll drive you to the hospital”Jeremy tapped her shoulder.
“How do you know? What do you know?”she quickly asked, crying so hard.
“I couldn’t bring myself to tell you… or BMW. I thought I could do it alone, I’m sorry”July looked down, sniffling.
“Do what?! July, what?”Trisha yelled, shaking her on the shoulders.
“Before Yolanda’s sudden disappearance, I overheard her talking to someone on the phone about you… I was too ashamed of talking to you and I didn’t want to let the cops know because… because, I didn’t want to lose my new family”July muffled.
“But I swear, I never liked Yolanda’s ill plans… I thought she’d change. And I never supported dad’s schemes too. I contacted who Yolanda sent to… to end you and I paid him off. Believe me, he promised not to do anything. Then today, he called me, telling me he missed the sound of a gun and he’d really wanna hear it. I knew it was you… and I told Jeremy immediately. He tracked the number and it led us here… we informed the police but… sorry, it was too late. I’d have told you while I could”she explained.
Trisha stared, confused for a while. Then took to her heels, leaving them there.
“I hope nothing happens to BMW… it’ll be on me. I’m so scared”July told Jeremy.
“Yeah. You better be”he held her shoulder.
She looked at him with trembling lips.
“I just wanted to keep my new family out of trouble… not until I found out my own dad killed his wife, your auntie. Now, he and Yolanda left me. I’m after a family that prefers their own lives”she muffled.
“One, you still think Ronald escaped that day? Crap. He has to pay for the crimes he’s committed and two, you have me”Jeremy winked.
“You’re not even worried about BMW”July pushed him away.
“He’s strong. He’ll recover fast. He just needs time to rest”he replied, touching his chest teasingly.
“Someone who was shot..”
“Miss July Dawson?”a police officer walked up to her with a book and pen.
“Yes”she muffled.
“We’ll like you to state everything you know about this incident, and clues you might know about Yolanda and Ronald Dawson’s hiding place,”he said.
“Umm, yeah”she stuck a part of her hair behind her ear, looking awkward. “But about where they are… I can’t really state”she added.
“No one can state”Jeremy whistled, looking away.
Later.
“I think my dad and half-sister aren’t coming back and even if they do, they won’t be alive. Your looks tell me BMW has a hand in their disappearance”July eyed Jeremy as they ran to his car.
“Whoo. I didn’t say nothing”he replied.
•Heathrow Hospital~12am•
Trisha paced the emergency room door, crying and wishing for good news in her heart.
July stood beside her, trying to talk with her but now, she’s dazed.
Jeremy stood by the wall with folded arms, sniffing the hospital smell— antiseptic.
“Trisha. You don’t know Bryan? Stop all these, it’s disheartening”he groaned.
The girls threw glares at him and he quickly looked away.
The door to the ward kept going ‘open and shut’ and Trisha forgot how to breathe. Running after the nurses or doctors rushing out didn’t work so she went to the floor, resting her back on the wall. Her legs went up and she wrapped her hands around them.
“I’m so sorry… it was my fault”July cried with her.
“No! It was mine! He took the bullet for me! ohhhhh”Trisha went into another round of tears, roughing her hair.
“Miss Africa!”Ann ran in with Freddy, Axel and Courtney.
Axel is even in his PJ.
“I was called by Freddy in my sleep, what happened?”he asked.
No one could answer, Freddy got to the door and widened his eyes meeting his friends in the operating room, laying lifeless on the bed— transfused, connected to tubes and wires, nose covered in breathing mask, surrounded by the surgical team, machines.
The beeping sounds from the monitor and the surgeons breathless words echoing from one ear to another.
“How.. how did this happen?”he looked at the three. Trisha, Jeremy and July.
His eyes went back to Trisha, lingering on her alone.
“Trisha, what happened?”he asked. Ann, who has been squatting before Trisha looked up at his eyes.
“Wizard”she called. She’d never seen his eyes so red. Nah.
“Trisha!”he yelled, yanking her up.
“He… he took the bullet for me. It was all my fault. I… I…”Trisha stammered, she hiccoughed.
“Of course it was your fault! It is your fault! Why didn’t he have his proof on? Huh, tell me? Because he was trying to be a normal dude for you! Last time he drank himself to ‘almost death’ for the fear of losing you and now he’s in that fúcking room because of you!”He yelled, shaking her vigorously.
Jeremy and Axel stepped into the scene, pulling him away.
“Dude, what’s the meaning of that? You shouldn’t be doing this”Axel cautioned.
“It’s Bryan, MY BOSS, we’re talking about here. What the füç? is wrong with you, man? I’m so disappointed that I’m the only one not too worried, I mean seriously?”Jeremy blinked, totally pissed.
“You’re right, Freddy…”Trisha tried talking but July pulled her to a hug.
“You have a girlfriend and you’d do the same if someone tries hurting her. Don’t tell me you’re not overprotective of Ann!”Courtney yelled at Freddy, already pulling her slippers but Axel pulled her back to him, rubbing her back.
“füç? Yolanda, füç? her. Where the hell did he keep her?! I wanna kill her!”Freddy yelled, marching out.
“You won’t blame Freddy. Bryan was his third best friend… after Yolanda, then he became his best buddy after Bryan developed the wicked hate for Yolanda for, you know why”Jeremy explained.
“I caused it all… but please, I want Bryan strong again. I don’t want him… dead”Trisha buried her face in her palms, whispering the last word to herself.
Courtney and July hugged her, Ann joined the hug wondering why Freddy would pull that stunt.
He loves Bryan too much but wasn’t that harsh? It’s not Trisha’s fault.
•Six Hours Later•
The day broke shyly, like something slowed it down.
It’s not a good day break, especially not for the squad.
Bryan had been transferred hours ago to the ICU, now they’re all waiting for a result… a good one.
The friends sat separate, space that suits them best.
Ann and July are sitting on the chair, asleep.
Courtney is barely awake, her head is on Axel’s lap and even when she’s telling herself she isn’t sleeping, she really is.
Axel had called his mom and Ella that he wasn’t returning that midnight.
Freddy paced, licking his lips in curiosity and fear. He’s just too worried, since twelve midnight, no doctor could give them a reasonable answer.
It’s a heart problem we’re talking about here.
Selena is also there, sniffling quietly on her seat. She got the call by one o’clock and she rushed down here.
She wasn’t worried about Dax the way she is now, Dax is no longer a thing to her since he wouldn’t accept that.
Jeremy had left that morning to get food for the squad since they refused to go after Selena’s plea.
Trisha sat on the floor, that’s where she had been. Staring at the ceiling.
She’d stopped crying but deep down, she’s dying.
Dying to hear Bryan’s voice again, feel his warmth, stare at his cold eyes.
The cardio thoracic surgeon finally walked up to the silent-as-a-graveyard waiting room and Selena, Trisha and Freddy were with him the next second.
He pulled his mask down, and removed his cap, his eyes showing tiredness.
“Are you his family?” he asked.
“We are,” Freddy said immediately.
The doctor gave Trisha a thorough look.
Of course, she’s different.
“I… I’m his…. I’m with him” her voice cracked.
“She’s my son’s girlfriend, is he fine? Is Bryan alive?” Selena asked.
The man nodded, Trisha’s heart banged. Relief washed through her, but she’s still scared. Somehow.
•Axel’s Home•
“Ella, it’s morning. Wake up” Britney whispered to her. She turned to the other side of the bed, enjoying her sleep.
“Urrg, Ella” Britney tapped her.
“I don’t wanna go to school today” Ella sat up, sighing.
Britney sighed and sat on the bed, Kiki pounced on her at the same time and instead of yelping, she simply caressed the kitten.
Kiki enjoyed her for sometime before going to his real owner and mom— Ella.
“Ella, Axel wouldn’t be coming soon, but when you get back home from school, you’ll meet him. He’ll explain what kept him this long. He’s fine, I heard from him this morning” Britney said.
“I know big bro Axy is fine, and I’m not worried. I’m just sad I’ll be taking the school bus” Ella looked at her mom, making cat eyes.
“Ohh, I can call Axy to come back ASAP and take you to school then” Britney quickly said.
“No mom. I know I said I’ll never let you follow me to school but that was before, when I was stupid. Please, take me to school mom” Ella said.
Britney’s cheeks turned pink and she smiled at her daughter, hugging her.
“Oh, I love you, my Pooh bear,” she said.
“Finally you gave me a pet name. Big bro calls me Cat, but I love yours the more” Ella gushed.
“I love you mom. And my friends are gonna hear from me. I’ll brag about my mom. SHE’S THE BEST IN THE WHOLE WORLD!” Ella screamed, spreading her arms wide.
“You’re the best daughter in the whole world” Britney hugged her again.
“C’mon Kiki, group hug”Ella called, Kiki joined.
“Hmmm”they moaned.
•Back To Hospital Scene•
“He made it through surgery.” The surgeon started gently.
“We managed to stabilize him,”he added.
“Thank God—“Freddy breathed.
“But”The doctor glanced at him.
Trisha almost lost balance hearing that. By now, Axel and Jeremy are with them, staring dumbfounded.
Even Jeremy’s faith is starting to wither.
“He’s not out of danger yet, he’s in the ICU as we speak… because his condition is still critical. The next twenty-four hours are very important, he fought hard and he’s strong… Still, we can’t guarantee if he’ll make it after twenty-four hours. We need to watch him closely and he needs you all to be strong'”The doctor said and held Trisha on the shoulder.
“Especially you,”he smiled at her.
“Can I see him?” She asked.
“You can. But just for a moment. Prepare yourself, he won’t be awake”he replied.
Trisha looked at Selena who smiled, she could see the sadness behind that smile and she felt like crying again.
She looked at Freddy, his eyes are softer now, staring at her like he killed someone.
Then Jeremy and Axel, they only gave her a simple go-ahead nod.
The three girls are still asleep so no news from them.
Trisha swallowed and stepped right behind the doctor, disappearing into the ICU
•The Intensive Care Unit(ICU)•
The room hummed softly, machines all around Bryan, connected to his heart and other systems.
The machines breathed for him, watched over him and lived for him— for now.
Trisha stepped in alone, slowly.
Her dried, red eyes turned teary again immediately she set her eyes on Bryan.
He lay still, chest rising and falling in controlled, steady motions. His face looked pale and peaceful, like he was sleeping, Trisha chuckled in tears as she reminisced how tough and hard-rock he can be.
Now here, he looks calm. She missed his hard side. so much.
Well, the tubes and bandages told a different story.
She walked forward and stood beside him, careful not to touch anything.
Tears welled up again, and in no time, her cloth was soaked.
“You made me promise never to leave you. And I did… Now, you wouldn’t dare leave me, Miller” she sniffled, barely whispering.
“I need you to stay okay? I won’t go anywhere, ever. I promise again to never go anywhere. Just wake up for me, please” she said.
Then, she remembered the doctor’s words.
‘Still, we can’t guarantee if he’ll make it after twenty-four hours. We need to watch him closely and he needs you all to be strong’
She looked back at Bryan, shaking her head. Her nasal mucus was dropping so bad.
“I believe in you… you’re strong. You won’t leave me, you won’t die Bryan” she cried and fell on the floor.
“Gawd, save him. Save him for me, please” she muffled.
‘… After twenty-four hours…’
‘… After twenty-four hours…’
‘… After twenty-four hours…’
Those words haunted her and she cried harder, praying in her heart.
TBC…
