Micheal has been thinking of the best way to confess to Paulina, because she always mistook his affection as part of their agreement. After Ava tried to blackmail him the other day, he take advantage of her stage to put her in her place and confess his true feelings to Paulina, but he couldn’t man up to his words afterwards. His friends believed it was all an act, so as Paulina so he couldn’t think of a way to clarify himself.
He tried to send her messages, but he couldn’t compose a message, so he contemplated before call on her but his phone went off in the process so he took it as a warning sign, bd went to charge his phone.
*
He was about to go to bed when Mr. Jones called to inform him that his presence was needed at his father’s living room. After their last confrontation, he has been trying to avoid either of his parents. Resigning from work was out of the blues, but he was willing to do anything to escape the engagement at that point. Upon returning to his room, he regretted splitting that out, so he has been avoiding his parents since then.
He was aware than refusing to meet his father would be a bad idea, so he went to his father’s living room but he wasn’t there, so he went to his study instead.
After he placed a soft knock on the door, a vague response from echoed from inside, and he went in.
“I’ll give you just a week to turn in your resignation letter!” Mr. Russ blurted, and Micheal flinched in fear. He was dauntless about quitting, but now he felt intimidated by the potential consequences.
“Ok, dad,” were the only words that escaped his mouth.
“Are you resolute about your decision?”
“Dad… u was with Ava, and we broke up. We had our reasons for breaking up,”
“I heard that you suffered a heartache after she left, if you love her that much then getting back together shouldn’t be a problem,”
“I loved her, but I moved on. I don’t want to return to the trash I dumped,” he said, and Mr. Russ chuckled.
“What happens when you realized you dumped a treasure along with the trash,”
“I was careful when I trashed it, and I didn’t lose anything,”
“Mike… you’ve been a businessman since you were a child. ‘Catch them young’, that was the goal, and you’ve been impressive until now. There is something you’ve to understand about businessmen. You’ve to turn around, and take another look after dumping something, why? There could be something I might need from what I dumped, did I made the right decision? That’s it, Mike. The Packard’s and Stanford’s only has a daughter who is the heiress to a big fortune. Is that who you called trash? Weren’t you thinking before dating her?”
“I’m sorry, dad, but it’s not just Ava,”
“Then who?!” Mr. Russ snapped.
“I…” he shuddered.
“It’s ok. It doesn’t have to be her,” Mr. Russ said, and Alvin looked at him waiting to hear his alternatives. “Theo Stanford’s already agreed to the engagement, and we’ve to turn them down, although we proposed it first. You seem determined, so I won’t push further. That’s a list of potential candidates that can replace the Stanford’s daughter. It’s a perilous idea, but your mother came up with it, so I’m sure she would be able to counterattack the consequences,” he said, and gave Micheal a drafted list. “You can either be with any of those listed there, or go for the Stanford’s daughter. There is too many things on the line, but choosing any of those candidates is our only weapon. The Stanford would likely give up if any of those family are involved. But the Stanford’s daughter is still our best choice. You’ve until this weekend to turn in your resignation letter, or choose any of those,” Mr. Russ said, and Micheal exhaled heavily.
*
He returned to his room and checked on all names. He look at really know any of them expect the Lockwood’s daughter, Jessica.
“Does the Holt have a teenage daughter?” He thought
He sent all the names to Stanley to help him confirm if they have a daughter, and Stanley replied after about half an hour with the names of their daughters, and pictures.
💬* The Alexander has a daughter in grade 8, and she resides in France, the Holt has a daughter who is in her second year in college, the Blakes has a disabled daughter who is a teenager, and the current chairwoman of Downs’s group who is in her late 20s,*
“What? Am I a joke to dad?” Micheal shouted after reading Stanley’s message.
💬*Why are you interested in them?* Stanley texted, but he couldn’t reply.
He knows from the start that his parents can never approve his relationship with Paulina, and that has been his fear from the start. He was hoping on going public with her after he gain more power, but the sudden engagement was a barrier to his plans.
He put the list away, and went to freshen up not intending to think about anything.
After he freshened up, he went to stand by the window to stare at the moon, and his lips curved in a smile.
“Staring at the moon is indeed the best therapy,” he muttered, slipping from his glass of wine.
He heard a knock on the door, and he thought it was Mr. Jones because he is the only person who has the audacity to knock at his door, but the knocking continued, and she went to the door angrily —Mr. Jones would have given him a call, he only knocks if he was unable to reach him. Getting to the door, he opened it widely and saw the new chef there to serve him dinner.
“Good evening, sir. I brought your dinner,”
“Did I request for it?” He blurted.
“It’s past your dinner time, sir,” she muttered.
His other staffs around, bowed their head and he exhaled heavily before slamming the door to her face.
*
During classes the following day, he couldn’t even glance at Paulina, the thought that the universe would never approve thier relationship was really overwhelming. When it was time for recess, she hurried out of the class and his heart sank at the thought that she was hurrying to Sage, so he dragged her back. As the day fly by, she left without declining his offer to give her a ride and he watched her from afar leaving the school with Sage.
“Why don’t you tell her?” Stanley asked him from behind, starling him.
“When did you got here? Where are the others?”
“Austin refused to leave until he ace the game, and Steven isn’t giving up either,”
“So, why are you here?”
“To talk to you. I also know it can’t work, and it would never work. Even if you won’t be with Ava, it can never be her but you can still give it a shot. We only live once, man. Make yourself happy while it last, and worry about the consequences later,” Stanley said, and Micheal looked at him.
“Should I really do it?”
“You’ve to stay true to yourself, man. You advise Austin and I to find a girl, you shouod dos same to and be with someone who will make you happy even if it’s for a short period. You should at least make yourself happy before you marry any of those candidates I search on,” Stanley advised, and Micheal looked at him.
“Can you back into people’s mind?” He inquired, his curiosity piqued.
“I wish I could,” Stanley muttered, and winked before leaving.
Everyone left school but Micheal couldn’t bring himself to leave. He was lost in his thoughts, his parents can never approve Paulina no matter how hard he try, it would only work if she can be reborn from an influential conglomerate family which can is impossible.
“You should really do it, Mike. You should enjoy it while it last and worry about the consequences later,” he thought, and sent a message to Paulina.
*
Paulina stared at him intensively, and he curious wait for her respond but her ringing phone made her look away, and she immediately picked the call without checking the caller.
📞*Hello,*
📞*Oh, Sage,” she muttered, and Micheal looked at her.
“Lina, it’s getting late, we shouod get going,” he shouted, and she looked at him.
📞*Yeah, I stepped out. I’ll give you a call when I get home,* with that she dropped the call.
She released a deep breath, and as she met Michael’s gaze, his smile brought a slight smile to her face.
“Let’s go,” she muttered, and he nodded.
*
He pulled over at the Stanford’s mansion, and held her hand before she could alight from the car.
“I’m willing to wait, Lina, if you won’t make me wait forever. But henceforth, I want you to consider my genuine feelings, because they are real,”
“Since when, Mike?” she asked, leaving him speechless.
“I don’t know,” he whispered, his voice barely above a whisper, but she managed to hear.
“Ok,” she muttered, and get down from the car.
*
She went to her room and laid flat on the bed in despair, she took her phone and contemplated on sending a message to Steven but thought against it.
She think for a while but decide to take her mind off it by going to talk to her father. He promised to take her to visit her grandfather, but they haven’t had another conversation since then.
She went to his study and placed a knock on the door but his angry response from inside scared her, and she almost thought of retreating.
“Dad… it’s me, Paulina,” she shuddered, the door almost immediately, and she met a smiley face contrary to what she expected.
“Lina, let’s talk in the living room,” he said in excitement, and a bright smile spread across her face as she nodded.
*
They went to the living room, and he gave her a cup of coffee.
“Thank you,” she muttered, and sipped from the cup coffee.
“How has school been? I’ve been really busy lately, that I didn’t have time to check up on you,”
“I would’ve imagined,” she muttered, and he smiled.
“Is there something you want to talk about?”
“Dad… you promised to take me to visit my grandfather…”
“Oh, yes. I did promise that, but there is a good news and a bad one,”
“What’s the news dad?” She asked, already curious.
“Your grandfather has always been out of prison,”
“Really? That’s good news,” she said in excitement. “And the bad?” She muttered, already anxious.
“I don’t know his whereabouts. I sent people out to search for him, but they haven’t report back to me,”he said, and Paulina’s face fell. “Don’t worry, Lina, we are going to find him, and once I do, I’ll make sure I send you to him,”
“You will do that?”
“I know that you aren’t comfortable staying here, but there is nothing I can do about it, but thinking about it now, I realized that it did be best for you to be with your grandfather,”
“Thanks a lot, dad. I’d appreciate that,”
“Don’t mention it, my child,” he said, and she smiled.
*
Ava who went to her father’s living room intending to talk him into sending her back to England. After giving it all a thought, she decide that being away was the best way to get over the embarrassment she received at school. She felt too ashamed to go to school, neither did her friends cared to check up on her. She decided that leaving could be best, and her father will be easier to convince. But upon getting there, and saw him and Paulina together vent her anger. She made a fist and stormed away.
“Turns out leaving won’t do me any good. That bltch will take my place in this house, and at school. I won’t let her take everything from me,” she muttered in determination, and burst out of the house to take the step she should have taken earlier —consulting her grandfather.
*
She ordered her driver to drive her to her grandfather’s house, no one else but him can help her smoothly get everything she desire.
*
She got to her grandfather’s mansion and was directed to one of his garden, there he was disciplining someone.
“You want to write articles, right?” Mr. Packard teased, stepping on the bruised man lying flat on the ground.
“Sir… I’m sorry…” the man cried.
“Don’t be sorry. I’m going to give you more things to write on. We could even make others write about you, what matters is someone is writing,” he teased, and stepped on the man’s head.
“Sir… have mercy, I’ve a family,” he cried.
“I know, do you want them to join you?” He sneered hitting the man’s stomach and the weak man groaned in pain.
One of his bodyguards whispered words to his ear, and he turned to Ava who was standing far away from them.
“It’s your lucky day, my granddaughter is here. Ava, wait for grandpa in the living room, Ive to wrap up my meeting here,” he shouted, and Ava nodded.
*
She went to his private living room, and waited for him. She is used to seeing events like that whenever she visits him uninvited with her mother, that’s why she feared him a lot. The first time she saw him break a table on a someone’s head was when she was 10 years old, she couldn’t contain her fear and the event replayed on her head for days, giving her nightmares.
She waited for half an hour, and he joined her in the living room after he freshened up.
“Ava, to what do I owe this surprise visit?”
“Grandpa, I adore you so much because you always have a solution to all my problems,” she said, and he chuckled.
“The solution lies within you, my child, you just have to find it,”
“I feel like I would lose everything expect you,”
“You should desire more things, not lose what you’ve,”
“That’s how it should be grandpa, but I’ll still lose everything soon,”
“To her?” Her grandfather asked, and she looked at her perplexed.
“Who?”
“Your father’s illegitimate daughter,” he blurted, and she gasped.
“How did you know about her?” She asked, her curiously piqued. Her mother warned her to keep Paulina’s existence away from her grandfather, so there is no way her mother could tell him, but she couldn’t be so surprised, her grandfather always have a way in fishing out informations on his own, and finding solutions.
“How won’t I know someone who is living under my nose? She has an identical disgusting face as her mother,” he said.
“Do you also know her mother? Why did you allow it happen, grandpa? Why did you allow dad have a mistress and even went as far as bringing his daughter home?”
“Because we could always get her out of the way,” he said, and Ava chuckled.
“Not just her, grandpa,”
“And the Russ’s son?”
“How do you know?”
“I know a lot of things than you can imagine,” he said, and she beamed.
“How do I do that, grandpa? All my efforts proves abortive,”
“We will just put them where they belong. The Russ’s son next to you, and the illegitimate daughter out of the way. History will have to repeat itself,”
“What history?”
“A beautiful history that happened before you were born. This conversation reminds me of a similar situation from years ago,” he said, and remembered what happened years ago.

FLASHBACK to years ago***
*
Grace broke down in tears in her father’s living room, and her father snapped at her.
“Are you literally crying over a guy?” He shouted.
“It can only be Paul, father… I love him, but that bltch seduced him… he would never be mine,” she cried.
“You will return to school, and continue your life, make new friends, move on from him, and I will sort out the rest,”
“How would that work?” She cried.
“Trust me, my child. Paul is yours, he has always been yours from the start. You will marry him, and first group will be ours,” he said, and her face brightened up immediately.

FLASHBACK ENDS***
*
Mr. Packard smiled wickedly, and looked at Ava who gave him a confused look.
“We will get the obstacles out of our way, my child, and Russ group will be ours. I’ll make you the queen, you will take over first group, and Russ group and I’ll make you the president over them all,” he said, and Ava smirked.
“Thank you, grandpa,” she muttered, and he smiled.
