❣️❣️The arrogant doctor❣️❣️

Ava opened her eyes, and looked around scanning her environment. She was at a hospital, and a nurse was in her ward.

“You’re awake, ma’am,” the nurse said, and she looked away trying to remember everything that happened.

The nurse left the ward later, and a doctor went to check up on her giving her his cutest smile.

“I’m so glad you are awake, Ava. Your father has been so worried,” Louis(the doctor) said.

Ava let out a sigh in disgust at how informally the doctor speaks to her.

“Can you lift your fingers?” He asked, and she exhaled heavily.

“I’m fine, Doctor. My vision and motion are all fine. I can’t just seem to remember how I was brought here, and how long I have been here,” she muttered.

“You’ve been here since two days, you were involved in a fire accident,” he said, and her eyes widened in shock.

“Fire accident?” She muttered, and instantly remembered everything.

“My mother, what happened to my mother? How is she doing?” She asked, and Louis bowed his head.

“I’ll inform your father that you are awake, he has been really worried about you. You should get some rest,”

“What about my mother? How is she doing?”

“I’m not in the position to answer that. Call the nurse if you need anything, I’ll be on my way now,” he said.

“Why are you being so rude?” She blurted, and he looked at her.

“Pardon?”

“First, you speak informally to me, and now your won’t even answer my question. Are you trying to insult me?” She blurted.

“You must have fully recovered. You are just like her, your mother. Call the nurse if you need anything,” with that, he left, and she scoffed.
*
Paul hurried to the hospital after getting news about Ava, he rushed to her ward and met the ward scattered, with a nurse with her trying to calm her down.

“Ava, what happened?”

“How can I live this way? Why do I have this scar on my face? Why?!” She screamed.

“Relax, Ava. There was fire, and something fell on your face, leaving that scar behind,”

“Do you expect me to live this way? You should have left me in that fire!” She screamed, and broke down in tears.

Paul gestured the nurse to leave, and went to embrace her.

“I can’t live this way… my beautiful face….”she cried.

“We will fix it, Ava. I’ll get the best plastic surgeon to fix it for you. You have to wait for the scar to heal completely,”

“How am I going to live till then? How am I going to live…” she cried.
*
She managed to relax later, and they summoned a janitor to clean the ward.

“Dad, how is mum?” she asked, and Paul embraced her.

“Your mu-..”

“Dad, there is a rude doctor here I want you to sanction, he was speaking informally to me like I’mno his child, and he refuse to tell me about mum even when I asked nicely,”

“Rude Doctor…. I will look into it,”

“And mum, is she still admitted? I heard that I’ve been here for two days,”

“Ava… your mother…”

“Dad, just say it. Is she in a critical condition? I am not a child,”

“Yeah, you aren’t a child anymore. Our little angel is all grown, and she is not even an angry anyone,” he teased, and she chuckled.

“What? Am I a dem0n now?”

“I didn’t say that,” he grumbled, and she laughed.

“Dad, I was so scared,” she muttered later.

“Scared about what?”

“When mum took me to that house I was so scared, scared that you’d abandon me. There was no water, I couldn’t even wash up, so I can’t imagine staying there for another day,”

“I’ll never abandon you, Ava. Whose father abandon his child,”

“Daddy…” she shuddered, in tears.

“I don’t care what the paper says, or what your blood type is. You will always be my daughter,”

“Dad, I’m not a good child, I talk back at you and was disrespectful to you. I have done a little of bad things that I thought dying in that fire was my punishment… thank you for saving me, father,”

“I am happy that you are fine, even though I was late, and couldn’t save your mother,” he muttered, and she looked at him.

“My mother? Mum? What happened to her?”

“Ava… your mother… Grace…” he shuddered, and she shook her head.

“No, dad! No, no! Nothing happened to my mother, tell me she is fine, tell me she is in a critaical condition and we have to pray for her to wake up, tell me I am going to see my mother. Tell me that dad,” she cried, and he embraced her.

“I’m sorry, Ava but I can’t tell you that,”

“Noooooo…. Mummyyyyy… bring back my mum. Noooooo….” She wailed.
*
Ava cried herself to sleep later, and Paul left after she was fast asleep. Not long after Paul left, Paulina arrived at the hospital with Don. After her father told her about the incident, she couldn’t concentrate on anything. The thought that Ms. Grace dled, and Ava was admitted, was all difficult to believe. Everything happened so fast that she didn’t know what came over her as she asked Don to take her to the hospital.

She went to her ward, and met her asleep, the scar on her face made Paulina wonder how she would react after seeing it. She intend to leave later when a doctor went in to check on her.

“Good afternoon, doctor,” she greeted, and the doctor smiled.

“You must be worried about her,” Louis said.

“I was startled to hear the news, and… that scar, is it going to fade later? I doubt if Ava can live with it,”

“It will heal, but it will leave a huge scar behind. She can get a surgery once it heals completely,”

“It’s going to take a while… how she is going to live before then…”

“You must be really close to her,” he said, and she shook her head.

“Not really. I should get going, I’m sure she won’t be happy to see me so it’s just good that she was asleep. Take good care of her, doctor. Her father will be disheartened if anything happens to her,”

“I’ll do my best,”

“Thank you,” with that, she left, and Louis didn’t stop staring at her retreating Jack till she was out of sight.

“Professor, do you know her?” The doctor with him asked.

“She is just alike, she is just like her mother. How come they both take after their mothers?” He muttered.

“Sir…”
*
Paulina was heading for the parking lot with Don trailing behind her when she saw a familiar figure that looks like her mother.

“Mum?” she muttered, and started following the person.

“Miss Paulina, are you looking for something?” Don asked.

“No, I just…”

“What is it?” He asked, looking around.

“Nothing. How can mum be here? What am I even thinking?” she grumbled, looking at her bracelet. “That woman that passed, looked so much like my mother from behind,”

“Hun?”

“Never mind. I guess it’s true that ghosts do walk around in hospital environment,” she muttered, and continued on her way.

THE POLICE STATION^^^
^
The police confirmed the owner of the abandoned building, and it lead them to Grace campaign manager, Kira. She was summoned to the police station, and Paul was informed as well.

Paul arrived at the police station, and Kira bowed her head in shame upon seeing him.

“It was you? How could you take her to such place? The building look like it could collapse, and the electricity was faulty. How could you take her to a place petroleum was stored?” He shouted, grabbing her shirt.

“Forgive me, sir. I didn’t know that the electricity was faulty, neither do I know that petroleum was stored there,”

“What made you take her there?”

“Mayor asked me to take her to a place out of reach from the press, the request came in a rush, and that was the only place that crossed my mind. She told me it was just for a night, I didn’t know that all those could happen,”

“Who stored the petroleum there?”

“It must be my uncle. We already disconnected the electricity, but he connected it back himself during his visit. He is the only one who goes there, and he works at a petroleum station, he is a manager. It could only be him,”

“Give the police all the information you have about him. I’m going to press charges, someone has to be held responsible,” with that, he left.

CHAIRMAN GREENWOOD’S MANSION^^^
^
Sage tossed and turned on his bed unable to sleep. It was his birthday, and his family threw a surprise party for him at midnight which was thier usual culture, so it wasn’t even a surprise anymore. It was a weekend, and his friends didn’t stop bugging him to throw a petty It was his 18th birthday, and he actually planned to throw a petty at the resort Paulina rejected him but the thought of going there shin and remembering that day made him change his mind.

He heard a knock on the door, and he removed his blanket already angry.

“Clara, just go away!” He shouted, and the door slugs open as expected, but instead of his sister to show up, it was Sophia.

“Happy birthday, Sage!” She shouted, and dropped the present she brought before embracing him.

“What’s this? What are you doing?” He muttered, unable to hide in laughters.

“What? It’s a surprise. Birthday should be filled with surprises,” she said, and he started looking around.

“Are you alone?” He asked, and she nodded.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but yes. Lina and I are supposed to come together, but she couldn’t make it. She had cramps,”

“Oh…” he muttered, and took his phone, but she collected the phone from him. “What?”

“You aren’t going to text her, are you?”

“You said she had cramps,”

“Yes, she does. But it’s your birthday, Sage. You are in no position to worry about anyone,”

“Come on, because it’s my birthday doesn’t mean I shouldn’t worry about my friend that is sick,”

“It’s just cramp. I also have that every month. Mine always last three days! She is going to be fine. She is your friend, and another friend is here too!” She lashed, and he inhaled deeply. “Can you ever get over her?” She grumbled.

“Kids, birthday celebrant and his friend, come down for breakfast,” they heard his mother said knocking the door.

“It’s my mum. I hope you haven’t had breakfast yet,” He asked, and she shook her head.
*
They went to join the others in the garden for a special breakfast, and he gasped upon seeing what they set.

“Mum! Are you inviting anyone?”

“Come on, son. It’s your birthday, we shouod enjoy a feast,” his father said.

“But we did that already,”

“You talk too much, bro. Sophie, come sit here,” Clara said, and Sophie smiled before going to sit next to her.

“I thought that’s my seat,” Sage grumbled.

“Sit wherever after you are done sulking,” she teased, and they all laughed.
*
They all had breakfast talking about random stuffs, and Mr. Greenwood asked Sophia a lot about her family, while his wife tries to change the topic till they wrap up breakfast.

They all sat together to enjoy a picnic, and Clara played the violin to entertain them.

“Wow! My girl, you are so good,” her mother applauded, giving her a thump up.

Mrs. Greenwood and Sophia cheered her when she was done, and the men scoffed.

“Are you into violin now?” Mr. Greenwood asked.

“Yes, she asked me to enroll her in a class for it. Look at her honey, she learnt so fast,”

“Clara you are really greedy, can’t you stick to one dream. You are being selfish and mean to the things you always call your dreams,” Sage said.

“It’s better than having no dreams, I’m not like somebody “

“Hey! Who are you directing that at?” He lashed.

“Who says your brother doesn’t have a dream? If you learn that fast, you should out in that effort to your studies too. So you can become the prosecutor, and your brother can focus on a direction,”

“Who says she isn’t doing well? Clara is improving. Our daughter is doing well, but Sage will be the prosecutor. Just leave Clara alone, someone with diverse dreams will make a good impact in your company,”

“That’s not the way to dream!” Clara lashed, and went to seat.

“I also once had a dream,” Sage muttered, and excused himself.

“Oh, he is already angry. Why did you bring up the company?” Mrs. Greenwood muttered.

“You also mentioned being a prosecutor. It’s his birthday, and we managed to ruin his mood again,” Mr. Greenwood said.
*
Sage returned to his room, and Sophia followed.

“Looks like you will have to live a double life,” she muttered, and he looked at her.

“I had enough of them. It’s like an anthem now. They have been like that since I was a child,”

“What do you really want?”

“I don’t know,”

“You said you had a dream, I heard that,”

“If dream is something you want to achieve, then it’s not a must is a professions from my end, it isn’t a profession. Look at Clara, being a violinist is like her 20th dream, while I have to listen to my parents debate on what I will do in the future. It’s so tiring,”

“Then what’s that dream?” She asked.

“For the first time, Sophie. I wanted something. But it’s not mine, so I can’t even call it a dream. I got rejected,”

“Paulina?”

“What do I do? I got caught. But I should really dream about something now. I will finish high school, and will need to choose a major. If I want to be a prosecutor, then I’ll go for law, if I want to work at the company, then I have to study agriculture. At the end, I might study both. It’s so exhausting. But that should be-…” he was saying, and she embraced him. “What are you doing?” He grumbled.

“I’m sure you will be fine. When the future comes, you will choose the right major. Don’t stress over that. And I’m sure you will gradually get over her too. It’s your birthday, don’t ruin the mood,”

“Sophie… do you care for some barbecue?” She heard Clara shouted from outside.

“It’s my birthday, and you are the one offered barbecue?” Sage grumbled.

“Yesss!” Sophie shouted. “Bye. I want barbecue,” she winked, and ran out.
*
She joined them to have barbecue, and Sabe joined lager as well.

“Son, do you have plans?” Mrs. Greenwood asked.

“Why ding you want to throw a party. You should throw a party with your friends,” Mr. Greenwood said.

“My friends are also insisting. But… I didn’t make any plans,”

“Well. It’s good that your birthday is in the weekend, we have today and tomorrow, so—…”

“No, mum. I am not going fishing. I refuse. NEVER! It’s my birthday, let me at least do what I will enjoy,”

“What’s wrong with fishing? It’s fun,” Clara grumbled.

“Come on, son. You can’t be indoor on your birthday, I refuse that!”

“No fishing. The kids have exam coming up,”

“I’m sure they will do well. They will always do well. Even if we don’t go, they won’t use that time to study,”

“Who goes fishing on his birthday?” Sophia grumbled.

“Exactly! Who goes fishing on thier birthdays?” Mr. Greenwood said, and that was when she realized she said that aloud.

“You also don’t like fishing?” Clara asked.

“Is it fun?” She asked back.

“It’s not fun. Just be like that, and don’t be like them!” Sage shouted, and covered her ears.

“You two are a perfect match, you have that in common,” Mrs. Greenwood said,‘a Sophia smiled.
*
Sage and his father prepared fire together to make more barbecue, while his mother excused herself to receive a call, and Sophia and Clara sat together chattering.

“Do you like Sage?” Clara asked, and Sophia looked at her.

“What?”

“You can’t even deny it,”

“How could you tell? Sage don’t even have the slightest idea,”

“He is such a f0ol,” Clara grumbled, and they both laughed. “Don’t like my brother,” she muttered, and Sophia looked at her.

“Why? Because I don’t like fishing?”

“Of course not,”

“You think I’m not good enough for him,”

“Not that. He didn’t know that you like him because he never looked at her, and that means he doesn’t feel the same. You are only going to get hurt if you keep liking him. Few girls get hurt because of their one-sided feelings. I read books a lot, so I know. I once wanted to be a writer, so I I read a lot,” she said, and Sophia managed to chuckle.
*
Sage offered her a ride later, and they both went to the parking lot.

“Come on, my driver will be here soon,”

“I already offered you a ride,” he said, and they both entered the car.

“If you don’t have plans later, we should go out. It’s your birthday, you shouldn’t be indoor,”

“I know. My friends are throwing a party for me. They will never let me be on a day as this. You should come too,”

“Of course, I will! Why will you think of throwing a party behind my back?”

“You will meet a lot of guys there,”he muttered, and her jaw dropped.

“Is that why you want me to be there?”

“You should get over that jerk that won’t even look at you. Meet a lot of good people,”

“I will decide that myself,”

“Sophie, you should get over him,”

“What’s it to you?”

“I know how it feels to harbor an unreciprocated feeling,”

“I’ll take care of my own feeling,”

“Don’t like me, Sophie,” he muttered, and she looked at him.

“Hooowww…” she shuddered.

“I overheard your conversation with Clara. I was such a fo0l, even my sister who just met you knew what I failed to realize. For your own good, don’t like me,” he muttered, and she sniffed in.

“As I said, I’ll take care of my own feelings.I’ll call my driver,” with that she alighted from his car in tears.

GRACE’S FUNERAL HALL^^^
^
Mr. Packard was escorted by police officers from the Detention Centre to attain the funeral.

He entered the hall, and all eyes fell on him. He made a fist trying to control his tears, and Ava ran to embrace him.

“Grandpa…” she cried. “What do I do now grandpa? Mum is gone, and you are this way, what will happen to me now?” She break down in tears, and he bend down to pat her back.

“Ava, listen to me. Grandpa agreed to be locked up, because I failed to protect your mother. When I think I’m punished enough and all the guilt fade away, I’ll return to you. Till then, be a good girl. Your father will never abandon you,” he assured.

“But what if you are ruled guilty, what will happen to me then?”

“I’m already guilty because I couldn’t protect your mother. I abandoned her because I thought she will do well on her own, but I was wrong. Be a good girl while you wait, I won’t make you wait too long,” he reassured, and she embraced him.
