Charlotte couldn’t concentrate on her regular daily routine after Grace’s birthday. She has been thinking about Paul’s proposal. She didn’t give it much thoughts before, but after Grace’s confession, she couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Paul started courting her openly, bringing her flowers and going on dates together. She has always regarded him as a friend, but as they grew closer intimately, her feelings for him started confusing her. She couldn’t understand if she only see him as a friend or wanted more than friendship but she eventually accepted his proposal totally forgetting about Grace confession.
She asked Paul to keep their relationship a secret from Grace till she is able to gather courage to tell Grace, even though Paul he pleased with it, he gave in eventually.
Their school held a banquet to celebrate Valentine’s Day, everyone started talking about the banquet and making preparations. Grace invited Charlotte to go shopping with her, and Charlotte made up her mind to take advantage of that to tell Grace about her relationship with Paul.
They finished shopping and went to have lunch together.
“Their food here is really nice Charlotte, you should fry it.” Grace said, and Charlotte nodded. She and Paul already had lunch at the l restaurant before.
“Paul brought me here three days ago.” Grace said, and Charlotte chuckled because she and Paul went there there weeks ago, before they started dating.
“Grace, I’ve something to tell you.” Charlotte said, and Grace looked at her.
“I know.” Grace said, and Charlotte looked at her wondering how she found out.
“Ho..-“. She was saying, but Grace cut in.
“…- I know that Paul is dating someone. He now has a girlfriend, he goes out regularly and always busy my calls because he is on call with her, but I’m not giving up. I don’t care who she is, I’ll propose to Paul tonight.”
“Tonight?” Charlotte shouted, and Grace nodded.
“Yes! I’ll ask them to pack the food for us, I suddenly lost my appetite. But you could wait back if you want.” Grace said, and Charlotte shook her head.
“I’m good, we should pack it.” She muttered.
Her phone rang, and she ended it immediately when she saw it was from Paul, that was the fourth time he called.
“It seems urgent.” Grace said.
“Not really, it’s just my boyfriend.” She muttered.
“Wow. Congratulations, you met a new guy. Good for you, Charlotte, you know how to move on. But I’ll never let Paul go if I get my hands on him.”
“Grace, Paul and I are…”. She was saying, but Grace stood up.
“I’ll go get the waiter.” With that Grace left.
“Why does it feel like she is trying to avoid my conversation.” She thought, and let out a sigh.

During the banquet, Paul arrived earlier with a flower bouquet eye-searching for Charlotte when he felt someone touch, and he turned to see who he was expecting.
“Charlotte, you look so beautiful.” He said, and she nodded.
“Come with me, Paul.” She said, and dragged him away to a more quiet place.
“Do you wanna tell me something?” He asked, and she nodded.
“It’s about. Grace.”
“What about her?”
“I feel we should tell her about our relationship now.”
“Ok, she will arrive soon, I’ll tell her then.”
“Paul, there is also something you’ve to know about Grace.”
“What’s it?”
“Grace likes you.”
“Don’t worry about that. She is just confused. I’ll handle Grace, let’s enjoy the night.” He said, and kissed her.
“What’s going on here?” Grace asked from behind, and Charlotte pushed Paul away. “The… the… both of you?” She shuddered in disappointment.
“Grace, we were going to tell you.” Paul said.
“When? After you walk down the aisle? I expected more from you Charlotte.” With that she left.
“Grace.” Charlotte shouted, and looked at Paul. “What do we do now, Paul?”
“I’ll handle Grace. Don’t worry about her.” He said, and held her hands in assurance while she nodded.

<<<BACK TO PRESENT >>>

Paulina and Micheal walked side-by-side in silence. Micheal cleared his throat to lessen the tension, and Paulina looked at him.
“Why-…”. They both said at a time and stopped walking.
“You, go first.” Micheal was quick to add.
“Why are you still here? I thought everyone left.” Paulina asked.
“Yeah, everyone left.” Micheal muttered, and remembered how he left the others earlier.

FLASHBACK to few hours ago***
*
Everyone started entering the bus, and the MASS entered their private car expect Micheal.
“Mike, get in, we’ve a flight to catch.” Austin said, and Micheal looked at the students entering the bus.
“You guys should go ahead, I’ll follow.” He said, and turned to leave.
“What? When? You even left your bag!” Austin shouted after him, and he waved at them.
The private car left and he started searching for Paulina among the other students but didn’t find her.
He saw her when she left earlier with Alicia, and saw Alicia returned alone to join Ava and Lia – and together they all went to the bus.
Micheal looked around for her the whole time but couldn’t find her so instantly knew that Ava must’ve plotted something against her which made him worried, so he ran back to look for her.

FLASHBACK ENDS***
*
Micheal looked at Paulina thinking of an excuse, because he can’t possibly tell her that he returned to find her.
“Why did you call me Mikey again?” He asked, hoping that helps him avoid her question.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that. You reminded me of my childhood friend again.”
“Why are you always reminded of your childhood friend whenever we are together? Is it because we are both namesake?”
“I remembered when I was locked up at school years ago, he was the one who rescued me back then, although he wasn’t a saint himself.” She said, and Michael chuckled.
“You always find excuses.” He muttered, and she let out a sigh.
“Is the bus still around?” She asked later, and he looked at her in realization, remembering he told Austin that he would follow.
“The bus?” He repeated.
“Oh, I almost forgot that you aren’t following the bus, but can you let me ride back with you? The bus probably left already.”
“Yeah, they left. And that was about an hour ago or more.” He grumbled.
“Obviously. So, can I ride back with you?”
“I wish you could.” He muttered, and her face fell.
“But…”
“I don’t think they wait for me either.” He said, and her eyes widened.
“What? So how are we supposed to get home? You will call them, right?”
He bit his lower lip nervously, and touched his pocket. “I wish I could.” He muttered, and she glared at him.
“Don’t tell me you aren’t with your phone either.” She lashed, and he nodded. “It’s fine, I’ve my phone, you can just call. But there doesn’t seem to be any server around here.”
“Let’s give it a try.” He said, and she gave him her phone.
He dialed a number, and called it, but it didn’t connect.
“How is this possible? How do people at this village survive?” He muttered.
“They should be able to survive somehow, maybe the problem is coming from here. We can just go around to look for a place with a better network.” She suggested, and he nodded.
They walked around together, searching around for network but it was to no avail; already exhausted, they sat under a tree to relax.
“Why were you left behind? There is no way they would’ve leave without you.” Paulina said, and Micheal looked at her.
“And you? It’s the staff’s responsibility to ensure that all students get in the bus, there should be no exemptions.” He replied, and she looked away.
“We know it doesn’t work that way at that school of yours.” She muttered.
“School of mine? You go there too.”
“No one cares about my existence at that school, expect my friends tho…” She muttered, and Michael rolled his eyes before scoffing.
“More people care about your existence than you think.” He said, and she looked at him.
“You don’t have to try to make me feel better, I know my place.”
“No, I care about your existence.” He found himself saying, and she looked at him.
“You?” She asked, and he nodded as he realized what he said.
“Yeah, I do. We got locked uo in a room together, and ended up together here somehow. That’s enough for me to know you exist.”
“Is that what you meant?”
“Of course! I’m not trying to make you feel better. What’s running in that head of yours?” He said, and poked her head before getting up.
“Ouch! Was that necessary?” She shouted.
“If it will help you think properly.”
“Actually, Micheal, do you know you are weird?”
“I’m getting that for the first time. But, wait! Micheal? You call me Mikey whenever you please, and now you are calling me Micheal. Can’t you just call me Mike like most people do?” He blurted.
“Is that your problem now?” She lashed.
“Hey, why are you talking back at me?”
“Is there a rule which states that I can’t? Or don’t they talk back at the mighty owner of the school?”
“Again?”
“I wish I could do more than lashing at you, but I enjoy attending school without worries. You literally backstabbed Sage and I, when we trusted you.” She said, and his face fell.
“Why mention him?” He muttered, and she looked at him in disbelief.
“Are you offended because I mentioned, Sage? Is that the point here?”
“It was above me, I really wish I could put those girls in their place, but I don’t have the final say.” He muttered, and she could feel the sincerity in his voice but she refused to be swayed, she has been deceived enough.
“Why did you say I was special to you? We were coincidentally locked up together, and nothing special happened between us, emphasizing that I was special to you made you weird. How am I special to you?”
“That was my way of getting back at them.” He muttered, and she looked at him in confusion.
“I don’t quite follow.”
“You must know by now that Ava and I don’t have the best relationship, she was my ex. It’s not a secret to anyone at school.”
“So?”
“Oh… I see that you knew.” He exclaimed, nodding his head.
“You said it wasn’t a secret.”
“Yes, it isn’t, but only those who were curious about me knew it, and you didn’t seem like the type. Seems like I got the wrong impression on you.”
“Gosh, what are you blabbering on?” She muttered, rolling her eyes.
“Well… what do I expect? I stand out a lot.”
“Of course you do, you go around with your puppies like you own the school., what am I saying? Apparently, you do.”
“What puppies?”
“What should I call those disciples of yours?”
“What? Did you seriously called my friends that to my face?” He shouted.
“I’m sorry if it annoys you, but they always follow you around like puppies.”
“They don’t follow me around, we walk together.”
“Following your lead.”
“That’s because I walk faster.”
“I’m sorry, I must’ve offended you.”
“I don’t care about whatever anyone says behind my back, but to my face, you should mind your choice of words.” He said, scaring her a little.
“You haven’t answered my question.” She said, hoping that changes the topic.
“To your question, I don’t know why Ava loathe you, but I wish to protect you from her.” He said, and she looked at him.
“Protect me?” She repeated.
“Oh, no, no, don’t take it wrongly, that’s my way of getting back at her, because I despise her.”
“You wanted to use me? No, you used me?”
“I’m sorry if that was the case, I was a c0ward as that puppy of yours claimed, even though I refused to admit it.”
“What puppy?”
“Just as you called my friend’s puppies, you also have one yourself. He is always hovering around you, but too bad, he couldn’t follow you to the supreme class. He got a limit.”
“I also wish I could get back at her.” She muttered, and Michael looked at her.
“You waht to get back at Ava?”
“She locked me up in a strange room the other day, and now, she locked me up in a strange town. What worse could she do in the future?” She said, and Micheal cleared his throat.
“What made you certain that she was behind this?”
“It could only be her. She put Alicia up to everything, and I was gullible to fall in their trap again.”
“Don’t say that, Lina. You aren’t gullible for trusting people. They are the bad people who broke your trust.”
“I don’t know how you plan to use me to get back at Ava, but I’m giving you the permission to use me. Use me as much as you can, because that’s the only way I can get back at her as well.” She said, and he shook his head.
“You don’t have to say what you don’t mean out of anger, you don’t even know me.”
“I know that you are a j£rk.” She blurted, and he glared at her.
“What?”
“I know that you can’t be trusted, I know that you are also like them, like Ava and the rest, but since we have mutual enemies, we’re in same boat. Let’s walk together, Mike, just until we get back at Ava together. I don’t care about your reasons for hating her, and you don’t have to know mine either. I won’t ask you questions, and you won’t pry in my private life as well. We will tolerate each other to get back at Ava. As long as I’ll be safe.” She said, and stretched her hand to him.
“Wait! Is this like some contract? Why is there so many conditions?”
“I see no conditions here.” She muttered.
“If that’s so, cool. But I’ll add my condition as well.”
“You aren’t going to ask me to stay away from Sage, are you?” She blurted, and his eyes widened slightly.
“How could you tell? Can you read my mind?”
“Because I don’t understand why you disgust Sage so much.”
“He is a sneaky guy, he seems to have interior motive. You shouldn’t trust guys like him.”
“I rather not trust you.”
“But too bad… you do.”
“I never said I do. I’m just getting my all, since I’ve nothing to loose.”
“Fine, I won’t ask you to stay away from him, but let this agreement be a secret between us till it’s over, and till forever.” He said, and stretched his hand towards her.
“You aren’t gonna tell your friends either?”
“They already know.”
“But I can’t tell mine?”
“My friends knew before now, and it should end there, that’s how I work, I don’t trust anyone.”
“Sage isn’t like that.”
“I don’t trust him, just as you don’t trust me.”
“If that’s what you want, I’ll keep it a secret from him, but that doesn’t mean I trust you.”
“You don’t have to trust me, but I trust you.” He said, and she chuckled.
“Are you trying to pull a string on me?”
“Just accept my hand, it’s hanging.”
“Then it should falloff, we already have an agreement even if we don’t shake hands.”
“What? So how are we supposed to seal it?”
“Why? Did you betrayed us last time because we didn’t shake hands?” She blurted, and he dropped his hand.
“We already have an agreement.” She blurted.
“We should find a way out of here. If we can’t call for help, we should at least find a way back ourselves.”
“How do you plan to do that?”
“Do you want to do nothing and remain stranded here?” She shouted, and he shook his head.
“I don’t have any money on me, do you have any?”
“Yes, I still have Sage’s card with me.”
“What? He gave you his card?”
“Yes, a black card at that.” She flaunted.
“Wait! Are you two in a relationship? No, are you getting married? Why would he give you his card?”
“Are you questioning my friendship? Is that a part of our agreement as well?”
“I’m just curious.”
“Curiously killed the cat.”
“Are you literally comparing me to a cat?”
“Then don’t act like one.” She said, and ran off.
“Where are you running off to?” He shouted, running after her.
*
She was lucky to find the house of the granny who saved her earlier, there they discovered that there was never a good server at the place they lay their tent, but the server at the granny’s place disappeared as well although she ensured them that it’s gonna be back before midnight. They tried to buy transportation tickets, but the last bus already left, and the train won’t leave till midnight.
They both sat in front of the granny’s house lost on what to do, when they heard a loud noise from the air, they looked up to see a helicopter.
“I knew it, my friends must’ve been worried, they sent the helicopter to get me.” Micheal boasted, and Paulina looked up at the sky.
The helicopter looked for a safe place to land, and Michael held Paulina who was disturbed by the breeze.
Immediately the helicopter landed, to their surprise, Sage came down from it.
Paulina’s eyes widened in bewilderment, she freed herself from Michael and ran into Sage’s embrace.
